We've been hearing about a new all-digital version of the Xbox Series X for a while now. While previous leaks pointed to a more comprehensive refresh, with an all-new design and 6nm chip at the centre, more recent photos point to a simpler design tweak, showing the Xbox Series X as we know it today … but without the disc drive.

Exputer has obtained photos of the purported digital Xbox Series X. It looks identical to the current model, but notably, the disc drive has been removed and the colour has changed to white, likely in an effort to differentiate it more from the current Xbox Series X.

It has also been claimed that the all-digital model will see up to a $100 discount over the standard Xbox Series X. Some internal components may also be upgraded for improved power efficiency and better cooling.

Assuming these photos are legitimate, then we should see the white, digital Xbox Series X console later this year.

KitGuru Says: If you are going all digital, then extra storage space is essential. With that in mind, I would like to see a bump to a 2TB SSD in this new version of the console.

Gameloft, known for the development of various popular mobile games and Disney Dreamlight Valley, has recently announced a partnership with Hasbro to create a new Dungeons & Dragons game set in the Forgotten Realms universe.

The game promises to be a combination of survival, life simulation, and action role-playing, focusing on an immersive, story-driven campaign packed with adventure, camaraderie, and danger. The game's first promotional image depicts a group of adventurers gazing at a distant castle from a hilltop, setting the tone for the journey that awaits.

According to the developer, the game will feature unique cooperative gameplay that blends real-time survival mechanics with the rich narrative elements of the Dungeons & Dragons series. Players can expect a campaign that challenges them to persevere through difficult encounters, relying on their companions for support and assistance at every turn.

Developed by Gameloft Montreal, the studio behind Disney Dreamlight Valley and LEGO Star Wars: Castaways, the new game is currently being developed for PC and consoles. A release date has not been announced yet.

Late last year, Sony announced that the PlayStation 5 had officially sold over 50 million units since its release in November 2020. While Microsoft stopped reporting on Xbox’s sales years ago, thanks to Take-Two Interactive’s latest fiscal earnings meeting, we now have a strong estimate.

As mentioned, late last year Sony announced that it had sold over 50 million units (as of the 9th of December), marking an impressive milestone for the console – especially as its first 2 years of sales were gimped by supply issues.

As part of Take-Two Interactive’s latest fiscal report, the publisher revealed that 77 million 9th-gen consoles have been sold as of the 31st of December 2023. Due to the slight misalignment in dates between Sony and Take-Two’s announcements, it is safe to say that an additional 2 million consoles were sold during December (to give a conservative estimate).

In doing some quick maths, assuming Take-Two’s figures are accurate, then Microsoft has seemingly sold around 23-25 million Series consoles since its launch. Of course, with Microsoft themselves not reporting on console sales, all we will ever get for the system sales-wise are estimates.

While 25 million in 3 years is significantly less than PlayStation, the Xbox Series is by no means a failure – and so it is interesting to see that the company is considering going 3rd-party.

For the past two generations of Xbox and PlayStation consoles, Sony and Microsoft have both gone with AMD for their custom hardware. Microsoft is already laying the groundwork for its next console, as we know from files revealed as part of the FTC v Microsoft trial over the acquisition of Activision Blizzard. Now, it is claimed that Intel is looming, looking to grab Microsoft's business for its next console.

According to Moore's Law is Dead, which has a hit and miss track record with console hardware leaks, Intel is looking to compete for Microsoft's business and wants to supply its own chips for next-gen Xbox consoles. Looking back at a little bit of hiring history reveals that there could be more to this thread to follow.

As noted by TweakTown, Intel hired John Sell back in 2019. Sell had previously spent many years working at Microsoft, acting as the chief architect behind the Xbox One, Xbox One X and the most recent Xbox Series X/S systems.

AMD has had a bit of a lead in integrated graphics over the past decade. However, Intel been working on its own Xe Graphics architecture for several years now and the latest Intel processors do have a bit more graphics horsepower, allowing for Intel Core Ultra chips to be used in gaming systems like the MSI Claw handheld.

Microsoft will no doubt have meetings with AMD, as well as Nvidia, before making any final decisions on hardware for its next console. It is also worth noting that Microsoft's Xbox hardware plans could also be in flux at the moment, as the company is looking to grow its game software sales by bringing more titles to platforms like PlayStation. This could signal a bigger shift towards third-party development and away from first-party hardware with exclusive software.

KitGuru Says: With the Xbox One/PS4 and Xbox Series X/PS5, Microsoft and Sony both opted to use very similar custom hardware for their systems. It would be interesting to see them both diverge next generation, at which point comparisons between the two systems would become more relevant than ever.

Valiant Hearts: The Great War released over a decade ago as one of Ubisoft's most praised games at the time, but a sequel titled Valiant Hearts: Coming Home only just released last year. Currently, this sequel is exclusive to Netflix's mobile gaming platform, but recent leaks suggest a console release is finally on the way.

According to VGC, the Brazil ratings board website has listed Valiant Hearts: Coming Home for multiple consoles, including Xbox One, Switch, and PlayStation 4. Usually, age ratings on such websites indicate a game's existence, pointing towards an upcoming release. It's been a little over a year since Coming Home was published on Netflix, and as such, it's probable that the timed exclusivity has expired, meaning the game can now be published on other platforms.

Valiant Hearts: Coming Home, a sequel set after the first game's events, tells the heart-wrenching stories of several individuals caught up in the war. The game has been developed by Ubisoft Montpellier, the same studio behind the original game and Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown, and has received generally favourable reviews, achieving a 73 Metacritic score.

Currently, the game is only available via the Android and iOS Netflix apps.

2023 was a record-breaking year for Epic Games and Fortnite, with the battle royale-turned ’metaverse’ title seeing waves of growth throughout the year. Despite this, the massive surge in players during 2023’s final months saw Fortnite surpass the likes of Call of Duty, Grand Theft Auto and Roblox combined.

As reported by Louise Wooldridge of Ampere Analysis, starting in October of 2023, Fortnite began to see a major spike in monthly players, increasing by an impressive 146% month-over-month by November – peaking in December thanks to an additional growth of 9%.

This not only helped push Epic Games to the top spot when it comes to publisher market share by Monthly Active Users, but with a total of 1.6 billion hours, Fortnite managed to surpass the MAUs for Call of Duty; EA sports FC 24; Grand Theft Auto V/Online and Roblox combined (it is worth noting that these stats only include PlayStation and Xbox).

Of course, a major part of its peak in popularity is thanks to the launch of Fortnite OG followed by 3 entirely new and different games built within Fortnite, giving the massive game an even greater potential reach.

Every time Fortnite appears to be losing relevance, Epic Games somehow manages to come back bigger and better than ever. It will be interesting to see how Fortnite evolves throughout 2024.

It seems that MSI is working on its own gaming handheld system. Recently, the company teased this upcoming product on Instagram, revealing that it will be formally introduced at CES 2024.

According to the teaser shared by REHWK (via VideoCardz), the portable gaming device features two joysticks surrounded by an RGB halo. Moreover, it is adorned with the “True Gaming” symbol, something quite common for MSI gaming products. The tease also shows MSI's dragon logo surrounded by vents on what seems to be the rear of the device. Soon after MSI's announcement, @wxnod showed marketing material for the upcoming console, giving us the front angle of MSI's console, which is apparently named “Claw”.

Although MSI has not disclosed any specific details regarding the new handheld, it didn't take long before people started speculating about them. Like most similar portable consoles, a device like this was expected to feature something like a Ryzen Z1 or Intel's latest Core Ultra 100 series. And it seems that's the case for the latter, as shown by the Geekbench entries spotted by @Olrak29_.

To be more specific, the listings show the console would pack an Intel Core Ultra7 155H, featuring 6x P-Cores, 8x E-cores, and 2x LP-Cores. This CPU's integrated graphics is based on the Arc Alchemist architecture, with 8 Xe-Cores capable of boosting to 2.25 GHz. The Core Ultra 7 155H is a 28W CPU with a Max Turbo Power of 115W. Moreover, it would also pack up to 32GB of memory, so there may be various configurations at different price points.

KitGuru says: Are you planning on acquiring a handheld gaming console? Do you already have one in mind, or will you wait for CES 2024 to see if MSI's portable console (or other unknown consoles) bring something new?

The PlayStation 5 had a relatively slow start back in late 2020 due to many factors including but not limited to the global pandemic and a massive shortage of supply. This year however, we saw Sony’s supply woes finally end, making for a highly lucrative year and helping to push the console to 50 million units sold.

Making the announcement via a press release, Sony Interactive Entertainment revealed this latest milestone, saying “the PlayStation 5 console (PS5) has surpassed 50 million units sold through to consumers, three years since its Nov. 2020 launch. Thanks to the support of PlayStation fans globally, the PS5 console has experienced strong momentum this year, driven by a slate of highly popular games and SIE’s continued focus on bringing innovation to the gaming experience, including PS5 game streaming for PlayStation Plus Premium members.”

Jim Ryan – the soon to be ex CEO of PlayStation – spoke on this recent success, saying “Achieving this PS5 sales milestone is a testament to the unwavering support of the global PlayStation community and their passion for the incredible experiences created by the talented developers from PlayStation Studios and our partners. We’re grateful for all of our players who have joined the PS5 journey so far, and we’re thrilled that this is the first holiday season since launch that we have a full supply of PS5 consoles – so anyone who wants to get one can get one.”

As mentioned by Ryan, 2023 has been the first proper year in which the supply of PS5 consoles has been able to meet demand. With the PS5 having sold 22.5 million units in 2023 alone, it will be interesting to see how 2024 ends up performing – and whether the PS5 manages to crack into the top 10 best selling consoles of all time.

While typically Microsoft has two waves of titles hitting Game Pass each month, December is being handled a bit differently. Due to the holidays, we're getting one big wave of games this month instead, all announced at once.

Following on from a leak this morning, Microsoft has now confirmed December's Game Pass library update, adding that there won't be another wave of games until early January. Today's update comes with two surprise shadow-drops in the form of Remnant: From the Ashes and its sequel, Remnant 2, which are available on Game Pass for all platforms as of today.

The remainder of the titles joining Game Pass this month, including platforms and dates, can be found below:

  • SteamWorld Build (Cloud, Console and PC) – December 1st
  • Clone Drone in the Danger Zone (Cloud, Console and PC) – December 5th
  • Rise of the Tomb Raider (Cloud, Console and PC) – December 5th
  • While the Iron's Hot (Cloud, Console and PC) – December 5th
  • World War Z: Aftermath (Cloud, Console and PC) – December 5th
  • Goat Simulator 3 (Cloud, Console and PC) – December 7th
  • Against the Storm (PC) – December 8th
  • Tin Hearts (Cloud, Console and PC) – December 12th
  • Far Cry 6 (Cloud, Console and PC) – December 14th

While the earlier report on the leak claimed that there would be as many as nine more games joining Game Pass in the second half of the month, that is not the case. We'll get our next wave of Game Pass titles in early January.

Those subscribed to Game Pass Core, an entry-level version of Game Pass only available on consoles to replace Xbox Live Gold, will get two more games on December 6th – Chivalry 2 and Totally Reliable Delivery Service.

On the 15th of December, four games will be leaving Game Pass, including Chained Echoes, Opus Magnum, Potion Craft: Alchemist Simulator and Rubber Bandits.

KitGuru Says: What do you think of this month's Game Pass update now that everything has been properly revealed? Had you been meaning to play any of the titles leaving the service? Personally, I've had Chained Echoes on my radar for a while so I'm a little sad to see it leaving but perhaps it will return someday.

With MMOs becoming more popular on consoles over the last generation, and games like Final Fantasy 14 showing that a gamepad can be a capable tool for playing one, the idea of World of Warcraft on console has come up numerous times in recent years. As it turns out, it is also something Blizzard discusses internally pretty regularly.

Speaking with GamesRadar at BlizzCon over the weekend, Holly Longdale, VP and executive producer for WoW, confirmed that there have been discussions internally about bringing the MMO to consoles.

However, Longdale does preface this by saying that right now, the WoW team has a lot going on, with Chris Metzen returning to the fold to spearhead a new trilogy of expansions for the game that collectively make the Worldsoul Saga. However, as Longdale points out, Blizzard is part of Microsoft now so plans could change.

For the most part, Microsoft has allowed its game studios to run pretty independently, offering support and resources rather than direct, hands-on management. Chances are, it will stay that way for Blizzard but there's no denying Microsoft would love to get WoW on Xbox. The company certainly has the resources to set up a team that could get it done, but so far, the Xbox team has had little interaction with the Activision Blizzard studios as the transition is still on-going.

Currently, we expect to hear more about Microsoft's plans for integrating Activision Blizzard into the Xbox world in early 2024, which should include new Game Pass announcements.

KitGuru Says: World of Warcraft is nearly two decades old and all of the content produced over that timespan is still in the game today. It would certainly take a lot of work to bring all of that to consoles and thoroughly test it but I'd be surprised if Microsoft isn't already thinking about taking on that challenge.

Back in August, we reported that the console release of indie hit Phasmophobia was being delayed to October due to an office fire suffered by the team at Kinetic Games. Unfortunately, the effects of the incident are still being felt, with the team now announcing a further delay of Phasmophobia for consoles.

In a development update to fans published on their Steam Store page, the team at Kinetic Games said “Dear Phasmophobia Community, We'd like to express our deepest gratitude for your support and excitement for our console release. As we still try to adapt to our new remote working life after the fire incident and to establish a new office, we've encountered unforeseen challenges in adapting the game for consoles. These combined factors have affected our development timeline more than we initially anticipated.”

They continued, “Additionally, in preparation for the PlayStation VR2 launch, we have been diligently reviewing the game's performance and optimizing it across all maps to ensure a seamless experience for all of our console players. In this regard, we had to rework Maple Lodge Campsite with a completely new layout (more information below). This decision, though time-consuming for our art team, is essential to provide the best possible gameplay experience.”

The team concluded by saying “While we had hoped to present you with a special launch alongside the Halloween event, the complexity of our current challenges means we need more time. We will keep you updated on our progress and provide a revised release date as soon as we have more information to share. We are working diligently to minimize the impact of this delay, and we want to express our sincere gratitude for your continued support. We promise, when Phasmophobia arrives on consoles, it will be worth the wait.”

While it would have been cool for the console release to align with Halloween, ensuring the game is polished and stable at launch takes priority, and so the delay is necessary – if somewhat unfortunate.

It is attached using normal ATX motherboard stand-offs, making mATX enclosures ideal for a water-cooled PS5.

If you want to take the cooling of your PS5 to a new level, EK has the solution for you: the EK-QuantumX CoolingStation Monoblock. Water-cooling your PS5 will allow you to maintain stable temperatures with little fan speed variation. Because of the large surface area of a water-cooling radiator, lower fan speeds are sufficient to disperse heat, resulting in lower noise levels. Another advantage is that all electrical components will run at lower temperatures, increasing their lifespan.

The monoblock, like the standard cooling solution, cools every critical PS5 component, including the SoC chip, GDDR6 VRAM, different controllers, VRM, and the SSD NAND memory chips. The SoC transmits heat to the monoblock via thermal paste, whereas the other chips use thermal pads to transfer heat to the monoblock. To mount it on your console, you'll need to disassemble it, remove the PCB, and place it into the monoblock.

By encasing it in this monoblock, the console's footprint is reduced, allowing it to fit within mATX PC cases. The monoblock base is made of nickel-plated electrolytic copper and has a see-through glass window like many other water-cooling blocks. Additional aesthetic and assembly elements are constructed of stainless steel and aluminium and are not in contact with the coolant, preventing metal mixing. Moreover, the addressable D-RGB LED strip has 24 individually addressable LEDs that run along the Plexi window.

The EK-QuantumX CoolingStation Monoblock for PS5 only needs two G1/4″ connection fittings to function properly inside a liquid-cooling loop. It also requires a pump to move the coolant and a radiator with fans to disperse heat, just like any other regular monoblock for PC components. Furthermore, the PCB in this monoblock transforms the PS5's normal 2-pin DC power connection into two 8-pin PCIe power connectors.

This monoblock is compatible with the PlayStation 5 revisions listed below (physical differences prevent older versions from being compatible):

  • CFI-1200A (Disc Edition, Japan)
  • CFI-1200B (Digital Edition, Japan)
  • CFI-1202A (Disc Edition, Australia)
  • CFI-1202B (Digital Edition, Australia)
  • CFI-1208A (Disc Edition) (Russia, Ukraine, India, and Central Asia)
  • CFI-1208B (Digital Edition, Russia, Ukraine, India, and Central Asia)
  • CFI-1215A (Disc Edition, North America)
  • CFI-1215B (Digital Edition, North America)
  • CFI-1216A (Disc Edition, Europe)
  • CFI-1216B (Digital Edition, Europe)
  • CFI-1218A (Disc Edition, Singapore)
  • CFI-1218B (Digital Edition, Singapore)

Pre-orders for the EK-QuantumX CoolingStation Monoblock for PS5 are now available for €449.90 and will release in late October 2023.

In what seems to have been a big oopsie by the FTC, a great deal of documents have leaked pertaining to the hearings regarding Microsoft’s acquisition of Activision Blizzard. From internal emails to unannounced games and more, a whole boatload of confidential details seem to have been accidentally published for all to see – including the fact that Microsoft is planning to launch a cylindrical Xbox Series X refresh.

As archived by Resetera user ‘LightKiosk’ a presentation by Microsoft which was leaked by the FTC shows the console manufacturer’s future plans for Xbox hardware.

Codename ‘Brooklyn’ is a refresh of the Xbox Series X, offering a number of enhancements – but also some drawbacks. Adopting a new cylindrical design, this refreshed Xbox Series X will omit the inclusion of a disc drive, but will bring with it Wi-Fi 6E; Bluetooth 5.2; 2TB of internal storage and efficiency improvements, all for the same price as the current Series X.

Perhaps more excitingly, Microsoft is finally looking to bring its Xbox controllers up to current standards, utilising new precision haptics, an accelerometer, improved build quality with quieter buttons and thumbsticks – and even a lift-to-wake mechanic for better battery life.

Both these devices are seemingly planned to be announced in Q4 of FY2024, with them launching in FY2025.

The ramifications of the Microsoft FTC hearings have been going on for ages now, with a bunch of interesting and new details being shared by all parties. One of the court documents shared suggests that Microsoft is planning its next generation of Xbox consoles to release sometime in 2028.

While it may feel as though we are just getting started with the current generation of consoles, Microsoft is already looking far ahead to what’s next. In a report by Stephen Totilo via Axios, internal chat logs released as part of the FTC Microsoft hearings have revealed that the console manufacturer expects to have its next-generation Xbox launch some time in 2028.

Interestingly, Kevin Gammill – the corporate vice president of gaming ecosystems – spoke briefly on their planned approach for this next generation with regards to the number and flexibility of platforms, saying:

“We have already started this journey with Xbox One and Xbox One X, furthering it in Series S | X. We need to be even more flexible going forward with gen 10, but also provide the ability for creators to take advantage of unique hardware capabilities.”

Unlike the PlayStation 5, Microsoft kicked-off the generation by releasing two separate Xbox consoles, the Series X and S. While they share some core similarities, the Series S is a much more budget experience when compared to the X. it seems as though Microsoft plans to offer something similar with their next generation of consoles – seemingly arriving in 2028.

KitGuru says: What do you think of the Series S? Has it been a success for Microsoft? Do you like the current strategy or would you like to see Microsoft go back to offering just one Xbox model at a time? Let us know down below.

Since then, the game has gone from strength to strength, arriving on Xbox systems and amassing millions of more players through their free-to-play relaunch. Shortly following its success, ‘Stumble Guys’ arrived on mobile platforms to take advantage of Fall Guys’ popularity. Now, the clone is set to also come to consoles.

Previously announced to be launching on Xbox One and Series X|S, the free-to-play battle royale Stumble Guys has been confirmed to also be coming to PlayStation consoles. Developed by ‘Scopely’ one needs to look at but a single screenshot to know exactly where the game takes its inspirations from – the similarly named Fall Guys.

For the uninitiated, Stumble Guys is actually a massive game on mobile platforms, with the Fall Guys clone having been downloaded over 250 million times across both iOS and Android. Additionally, its popularity has led to the game receiving a bunch of crossover content with popular media IPs including Rabbids, Barbie and even Mr Beast.

Many mobile games are known for capitalising on popular console games, but it is curious to see this title actually end up also coming to consoles. It will be interesting to see how this all pans out upon its arrival.

Gamescom officially took place last week and Nintendo was indeed in attendance to sell merch and show games to attendees. As it turns out, Nintendo may have had some very interesting meetings behind the scenes of the event, as word has begun to spread that the company is now showing its next-gen console to partners.

According to Jez Corden, who also attended Gamescom this year, Nintendo apparently began talking about its next console with select press/developers in private meetings. This matches up with recent rumours that claimed that some studios have started to receive the first development kits.

Recently, some people have been circulating the name ‘Nintendo Focus' online, but that name has not been corroborated or confirmed by any trusted source yet.

The Nintendo Switch first launched in March 2017 and has gone on to become one of the best-selling consoles of all time. Fans have been asking for a more powerful model for years but Nintendo instead opted to stick to its current technology and quietly work away on the next full console release instead. Nintendo's next console is expected to launch in 2024.

Phasmophobia hit it big back in 2020 when the game was released in Early Access, launching to near immediate success. In the years since, the team at Kinetic Games have continued to work diligently on the game, improving it across the board. Phasmophobia’s next step was to see the title come to current-gen PlayStation and Xbox consoles. Unfortunately, the release has now been pushed back from this month to October – though there is a small silver lining.

Making the announcement on Twitter, the team at Kinetic Games said “Dear Phasmophobia Community, First and foremost, we’d like to thank you all for your support and that you are just as excited as we are for the console release. Due to a recent fire incident in our office building and unpredicted development issues, our ability to test and develop has been significantly impacted.”

They continued, “After careful consideration we have made the tough decision to delay the console release, initially set for August, while we get everything sorted. We are now aiming for a special launch during the week leading up to Halloween this October. This gives us the needed time to perfect and fine-tune everything. Your patience and understanding mean everything to us, and we can’t wait to bring Phasmophobia to consoles.”

While certainly unfortunate for all those involved – especially the team at Kinetic Games – the slight silver lining does come in the fact that Phasmophobia will now be releasing right before Halloween. Being a co-op focused horror title, Phasmophobia matches the Halloween vibes perfectly and so hopefully the game hits big once again when it does come to consoles.

Lords of the Fallen was one of the first Souls-like games to be released by a studio other than FromSoftware, with the 2014 title unfortunately receiving mixed reviews across the board. That said, a sequel to the game – also named Lords of the Fallen – is set to release later this year. Ahead of its October launch, the studio has confirmed that console players will benefit from multiple performance modes.

Speaking to Wccftech, Lords of the Fallen developers Hexworks sat down to discuss the many technical aspects of the game, with executive producer Saul Galscon revealing that the Unreal Engine 5 powered title will offer multiple performance options on consoles, saying:

“On both consoles, we offer performance and quality modes. The performance mode goes at 60 frames per second and 1080p resolution upscaled, which is kind of the standard in the industry. The quality mode is 2K (1440P) upscaled, running at 30 FPS. But even if you play at 60, Lords of the Fallen looks really good.”

As mentioned, Lords of the Fallen is running on Unreal Engine 5 and so should be able to take advantage of Epic Game’s many upscaling and enhanced rendering technologies – meaning that even at 1080p the game should look far cleaner than 1080p games of the past.

Interestingly, Gascon did not offer any information on the Xbox Series S version of the game, and so we will have to wait and see whether Microsoft’s lower-powered console will similarly receive multiple performance options (and if so at what resolutions).

Regardless, Lords of the Fallen is looking to be a tech showcase for Unreal Engine 5, and so it will be exciting to see just how good the game looks and plays when it releases for PC, Xbox Series X|S and PS5 on the 13th of October. The full interview can be found HERE.

With the PlayStation 5 well into its 3rd year on the market, rumours and leaks have begun to spring up claiming that a PS5 Slim is in the works. Even Microsoft themselves spoke on its existence during the FTC hearings. While yet to be officially announced, a number of details surrounding just how ‘slim’ this new iteration of the console will be have sprung up.

As reported by PlayStation software developer and reverse engineer BwE, the leaker took to Twitter to offer some information on the unannounced console revision, saying “The 2000 series PS5 ‘Slim’ looks a little bit shit.”

Going into details regarding the construction and design of this new model, BwE continued, “I would say it's about 5cm or so shorter, not much thinner. Weird curve in the middle with smaller vents. The BD drive is less curved so it looks weird. Has two ugly black slits on each side of the case. Dual USB-C on the front. Stupid embossed [PlayStation Sacred Symbols] on the rear.”

All these details come from a video of the console which BwE claims to have gotten their hands on. That said, BwE themselves note that this console could be a prototype, and so should be taken with a pinch of salt.

The PlayStation 5’s design has always been rather divisive, and it looks as though the Slim will be no different. We will have to wait until Sony themselves announce this new variant before jumping to conclusions, but it is seemingly safe to say that the PS5 Slim will still be a rather big console.

Microsoft’s strategy with this generation of gaming has been to offer two separate consoles of varying power and features. The Xbox Series X brings 12 teraflops of power and a disc drive while the more budget-friendly Series S drops the total power to just 4 teraflops while also removing the system’s ability to play physical media. It seems as though Microsoft might soon be set to mimic Sony in their approach to the 9th-gen consoles, offering a full blown Series X minus the disc drive.

As reported by known industry insider ‘Shpeshal Nick' via the Xbox Era Podcast, the leaker stated that ‘what I’ve heard – I actually heard it from a couple of sources surprisingly. At first I'd already heard it from one and then another one reached out to me completely separately and said “I've heard this is happening” and so I went back to the original and I’m like “does that mean I can say something now?” and they’re like “okay.”’

With that in mind, Nick claimed to have heard that “Microsoft is currently looking into a Digital-only Series X – so no disc drive”. Interestingly, this is not the only piece of hardware said to be in the works, with Nick claiming that “there is (sic) also plans for other hardware in 2025” – suggesting that this new Series X would also arrive two years from now.

Offering a discless Series X would put Microsoft’s strategy more in line with Sony’s – meaning two variants of the same console separated only by their ability to play physical media. If this is indeed the case, it will be interesting to see how Microsoft positions the system and at what price point it would retail for. Currently the Series X is £479.99 while the Series S costs £249.99 – meaning it could land somewhere in between these two. We will have to wait and see.

Rumours of a Switch Pro circulated for years with nothing ever coming to fruition. At this point, Nintendo is focused on a true successor console instead and according to sources, development kits have begun landing at various studios.

According to VCG's sources, a number of studios have now received development kits for Nintendo's next-gen console. With development kits arriving now, developers will have a little over a year to get their first projects ready for the new console, which should officially launch in the second half of 2024.

Unfortunately, nobody has leaked any specifications or feature details, so at this time, we do not know if this will be a new dedicated home console, or a hybrid system like the Switch. Typically, Nintendo tries a new gimmick feature each generation, with the Switch generation being the idea that you could seamlessly change between a home console or a handheld. The idea proved to be more popular than Nintendo expected, so we may see this idea stick around for the long haul.

A next-gen Switch would likely continue to be powered by Nvidia hardware, which opens the door for exciting features, such as the first DLSS-supported console games. DLSS uses AI upscaling techniques to greatly enhance performance for PC games. Such a feature would help many developers bring their more graphically intensive games to Nintendo's platform. Another area Nintendo will have to improve in is storage. The Switch currently offers a maximum of 32GB internal storage, making SD Card storage an essential requirement for most Switch gamers. With its next-gen system, we would like to see Nintendo offer 128GB, 256GB or 512GB storage options.

While Square Enix may have skipped Xbox with recent games like Final Fantasy 7 Remake and Final Fantasy 16, the publisher is finally throwing Microsoft a bone by bringing Final Fantasy 14 over to the console for the first time.

Phil Spencer has publicly expressed a desire to get Final Fantasy 14 on Xbox multiple times over the years. At one point, it even looked like the MMO might finally arrive during the Xbox One generation but nothing came to fruition at that time. This will finally change in 2024, ahead of Final Fantasy 14's next major expansion.

At Final Fantasy 14 Fan Fest, Phil Spencer joined Final Fantasy 14 director, Naoki Yoshida, on stage to announce that Final Fantasy 14 is coming to Xbox Series X/S in Spring 2024. However, there will be an open beta beforehand, so we can expect more news on that soon.

Final Fantasy 14 is a subscription-based MMO, but there is a free trial for new accounts. The free trial is being improved too, with trial accounts now able to play through all of A Realm Reborn, Heavensward and Stormblood, getting characters up to level 70. To access more recent expansion content and reach the true level cap, you will need to subscribe but there are hundreds of hours worth of gameplay to get through before you reach that point.

Final Fantasy 14's next major expansion, Dawntrial, will launch day-one on Xbox alongside other platforms.

In recent years we have seen an increased adoption of digital gaming media, with a decreasing number of players opting to purchase their games physically. This figure will likely only decrease from here on out, as the UK’s biggest supermarket brand has now announced their intentions to stop selling physical games.

As reported by Gamesindustry.biz, Tesco is set to stop stocking physical video games across its nearly 3000 shops throughout the UK, claiming that its reasons are to push customers “towards digital entertainment.”

In order to facilitate this, Tesco will not be stocking any more games in its stores, meaning when all the games are gone, they’re gone. Interestingly, the chain did confirm that they will still be selling digital points cards – presumably as part of their ‘digital entertainment’ push.

While there is no denying that the online shopping experience for video games has become a whole lot more convenient over the years, being able to go into a shop and pick up a new game physically has always been a source of delight. Hopefully we do not see other retailers following suit.

The ID@Xbox program was created by Microsoft to help boost the visibility of smaller indie titles, promoting and supporting these creative endeavours. As part of this, Microsoft started its ID@Xbox Demo Fest – the next one of which will go live next week.

Making the announcement on the Xbox blog, Jessica Ronnell, ID@Xbox Events and Community Management Lead said “We’re back! What’s summer without new game demos to entertain you during those hot days and nights? Starting July 11 and running until July 17, you’ll be able to experience over 40 game demos on your Xbox console.”

We will have to wait until the day-of to know the full list of 40+ titles, however Microsoft did highlight some of the games which are participating in the event, namely:

  • Demonschool (Necrosoft Games / Ysbryd Games)
  • Lies of P (Neowiz) – Available Now
  • Sea of Stars (Sabotage Studio)
  • The Wandering Village (Stray Fawn Studio)
  • Worldless (Noname / Coatsink)

Demos are extremely important when it comes to spreading awareness for a game. This fact is 10x more-so the case when it comes to indie titles. It is therefore exciting to see the likes of Microsoft continuing to highlight such games.

Years ago Microsoft announced that they would stop reporting on Xbox console sales, instead focusing on highlighting total Xbox Live and Game Pass subscribers. As such, it comes as a big surprise that Microsoft have officially released the sales figures for both the Xbox One as well as the Series X|S.

As part of an ID@Xbox presentation during the BIG Festival in Brazil, Microsoft took to the stage and announced officially that since its launch in late 2020 the Xbox Series X|S have sold a combined total of 21 million consoles.

Even more interesting perhaps is the fact that we now know just how many consoles Microsoft pushed last generation, with the company revealing the Xbox One family to have sold 58 million units during its lifetime.

For comparison’s sake, as of the end of March, Sony had sold 38.4 million PS5 units, with the company projected to sell 25 million more during this Fiscal year alone. Of course, it was well known that the PS4 far outsold the Xbox One, but it is interesting to see just how much – having pushed more than double the units with 117.2 million.

Though the reveal of these figures was most likely a mistake, it is welcoming to see Microsoft being more transparent. It will be interesting to see whether Phil Spencer addresses this announcement.

During the 8th generation of consoles we saw both Sony and Microsoft release mid-generation refreshes of their consoles, with Sony developing the PS4 Pro and Microsoft making the Xbox One X. Interestingly, it seems as though we will not be getting any mid-gen refreshes from Xbox this time round – as the Series X is already viewed internally as the console manufacturer’s ‘Pro’ variant.

During the most recent episode of Digital Foundry’s weekly podcast, hosts Richard Leadbetter, John Linneman and Alex Battaglia discussed the potential of an Xbox Series X Pro, with the team claiming that “Microsoft told us this back when we saw the Series X for the first time that the Series X is their mid gen refresh. They just decided to do it, ahead of time, I guess you could say.”

They continued, “The Series S is what they consider the standard machine and then Series X is, you know, that's getting ahead of the cart there and this is what you might get from a mid gen console.”

It is interesting to see the approach that Microsoft has taken with its consoles this generation. Amid rumours that Sony is working on a PS5 Pro, the lack of any mid-gen console refreshes from Microsoft could end up affecting the success of the platform in the long run.

That said, with the Series S being Xbox’s main console for the generation, it is clear that Sony and Microsoft are heading in different directions strategy-wise. It will be interesting to see how this affects the 9th console generation.

Microsoft’s Xbox Games Showcase brought with it a bunch of announcements. Perhaps the most surprising however was the reveal of some new Xbox hardware. While not the most exciting, those wanting to get in on the Xbox ecosystem can now do so in a new way, with a brand new 1TB Carbon Black Xbox Series S variant officially announced.

Being the younger sibling of the Xbox Series X, the Series S offers the Xbox experience for a much cheaper price – $299. Unfortunately, one of its biggest drawbacks is the fact that the console only includes 512GB of storage; a rather paltry amount in 2023.

It is therefore welcome to see the Xbox Series S Carbon Black announced – a 1TB recoloured variant of the entry-level console. Arriving on the 1st of September, this sleeker alternative to Microsoft’s cheaper system brings with it double the storage for a relatively modest boost in price: $349.99.

Pre-orders for the Carbon Black Xbox Series S are available right now. Extra storage aside, it is welcome to see a black variant of the Xbox Series S announced. While the white Series S contrasts quite nicely with the high-end black Series X, offering a sleeker and more minimal version of the S while also boosting its storage size is highly appreciated.

It will be interesting to see whether the Black Series S becomes the new default for the console (as the Xbox One S was for the previous generation).

Ever since Microsoft debuted its Xbox Game Pass subscription service we have seen the console manufacturer’s legacy Xbox Live Gold fall somewhat out of relevancy. Despite this, Xbox Live Gold and its Games with Gold program remains – though with a noticeable decrease in the quality of its offerings. That said, June’s offerings have now been announced, and they include two interesting looking indie games.

Making the announcement via the Xbox Blog, Dan Hickey, the Marketing Program Manager at Xbox said “Explore the worlds of two unique, narrative-driven games this June with Games with Gold! On Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S, sticking to one critical moral decision is harder than you think in the poignant Adios, and then starting on June 16 listen closely as you try the outside-of-the box audio driven adventure The Vale: Shadow of the Crown.”

As mentioned, the two titles included are as follows:

Though perhaps not the most exciting line-up, both titles offer unique experience, with The Vale taking you on an audio-based adventure which leverages sound and haptic controller feedback in order to “break down the barriers between you as the player and your character as you feel your enemy’s breath, listen to the crunching of footsteps or the clang of weapons.”

Adios is a cinematic first-person game in which you play as “a pig farmer in Kansas who has finally had enough of your role helping the mob dispose of bodies on your farm.”

With Xbox Live Gold costing subscribers just as much as PS Plus Essential, hopefully Microsoft opts to revamp the service sooner rather than later.

During Sony’s recent PlayStation Showcase, the console manufacturer officially announced Project Q – a Remote Play enabled handheld which will allow you to play your PS5 games away from the console itself. Few details were shared at the time – though according to an industry insider Project Q’s battery life will be surprisingly short.

Following the official announcement of Project Q, industry insider Tom Henderson (via Insider Gaming) claimed that the game streaming handheld will feature a battery life ranging from just 3-4 hours.

This is surprising, especially given the fact that the handheld does not run the games on its hardware, instead simply streaming the video through PlayStation’s Remote Play service. Of course, it is worth noting that the device will feature an 8-inch LCD panel running at 1080p and 60fps.

Alongside this, the handheld is said to include all of the many impressive DualSense features (gyro, haptics, adaptive triggers and more), which could be contributing to the disappointing battery life.

Henderson also revealed that Project Q is planned to launch sometime in mid-late November, lining up with SIE CEO Jim Ryan’s own statements regarding its launch happening later this year.

The announcement of Project Q has been met with a great deal of scepticism – and if these battery life rumours are true then the sentiment towards this new device is unlikely to change any time soon.
