Microsoft is reportedly working on an all new web browser to launch alongside Windows 10 in 2015. The project is currently codenamed ‘Spartan' and will see the company move away from Internet Explorer, which has garnered up quite a bad reputation over the years.

According to ZDNet, the new app is not going to be Internet Explorer 12 but a brand new browser instead. This isn't the first time that we've heard that Microsoft may move away from Internet Explorer , back in August during a Reddit AMA, IE Engineer, Jonathan Sampson, said that the company had been internally debating moving away from Internet Explorer to avoid the “negative perceptions that no longer reflect our product today”.

The Spartan web browser will apparently look and feel a lot more like Firefox and Chrome, although the foundations of Microsoft's current web technology will remain intact. The new software will utilize the Chakra Javascript engine along with the Trident rendering engine rather than switching over to WebKit, which is used by many competing browsers.

Apparently IE 11 will still come bundled with Windows 10 though for compatibility reasons, meaning that users will have two browsers on their hands when the new operating system launches next year.

The next Windows 10 event takes place on the 21st of January, Microsoft will be revealing new details about the OS then and will likely show off its next preview. We will also be hearing more about the company's future plans for Xbox and PC gaming.

KitGuru Says: Microsoft is probably doing the right thing by moving away from Internet Explorer and its poor reputation. It will be interesting to see what the company does to make its new browser more competitive. What do you guys think of this? Is ditching Internet Explorer a good move? Do you think history will just repeat itself with this new browser?

Just last week we had Phil Spencer teasing future gaming plans for Windows 10 and now, we have our first look at what Microsoft is planning as new Windows 10 leaks show off a new Xbox integration app alongside Cortana, the Windows digital assistant.

Microsoft is currently developing the Windows 10 consumer preview, which is expected to launch following an event on the 21st of January. The biggest addition to the newly leaked Windows 10 consumer build is Cortana, she will be responding to text and voice commands while also being integrated with the new and improved Windows 10 search function.

Aside from that, there will be a new Xbox application that looks set to take over from Games for Windows Live. At present, it looks like a gateway to Xbox Live, listing account information, achievements, activity feeds as well as the store. It's possible that we will also see the SmartGlass functionality also included by the time it launches.

That's all the news we have for now but it is possible that Microsoft's Xbox integration plans run a bit deeper than a mere gateway to a console service.

KitGuru Says: If Microsoft is planning to merge Xbox and Windows gaming then plenty of good things could come our way, such as more console exclusive games on PC, although we don't have enough details yet to know for sure what is going to happen. What would you guys like to see Microsoft do when it comes to PC gaming?

More rumors are beginning to suggest that Cortana, Microsoft's Windows Phone virtual assistant, will be coming to Windows 10. However, the feature may arrive sooner than we think as a part of the public technical preview, which Microsoft launched back in October.

According to Cnet's sources, Microsoft will be bringing Cortana to the January Windows 10 technical preview, there is reportedly going to be one new technical preview each month following up until April, at which Microsoft will announce more details on the Windows 10 final release and pricing/upgrade plans.

In addition to Cortana, the January technical preview will also support a new feature called ‘Continuum', which alters the Windows experience and user interface for those using two in one devices, such as the Lenovo Yoga notebook, which doubles as a tablet.

We'll probably hear more information soon as January is only a few weeks away. There won't be any word on a final release date until April though.

KitGuru Says: Cortana has been rumored for other platforms before so it seems likely that the feature will be coming. Either way we'll know soon enough when the January technical preview drops. Are any of you guys still using the Windows 10 technical preview? What do you think of it so far?

For the statistic lovers among us there is a new number to compliment the Windows 8 boot time figure we saw yesterday, the Consumer Preview has already been downloaded one million times. This achievement comes just 24 hours after it was available for download. The new Microsoft operating system “beta” was announced at a Microsoft event near the end of Mobile World Congress in Barcelona.

The Windows 8 Consumer Preview in action on a tablet

The Windows 8 Consumer Preview perhaps hasn't had the best reaction from desktop users due to the radical new Metro UI being more tablet-friendly. However, the million downloads also reminds us that their servers must have taken a hammering. At minimum there would have been 2,500 TB of data through the pipes in the last 24 hours. All this and download speeds seemed near perfect, myself and others were able to get speeds in excess of 4 MB/s across our school's Wi-Fi network.

Kitguru says: Good on Microsoft for delivering a solid Consumer Preview on time with server infrastructure to match it.
