Remedy Entertainment has always been a relatively niche studio. Known for creating the original Max Payne games, the studio recently found a great deal of success with their two most recent releases – Control and Alan Wake 2. Thanks to these two titles, the company has claimed that they are now in a better position than ever to negotiate with potential publishing partners.

Alongside the announcement that Remedy Entertainment have acquired full rights to the Control series from publisher 505 Games, the company posted a press release discussing the future of the studio, saying:

“This transaction will enable us to negotiate better deals for current and future Control games. We can now weigh up the options between self-publishing and a new publishing partner for Condor and Control 2.”

Remedy continued, “At the same time, we are in a better negotiating position than before as Control is an established brand and Alan Wake 2 has been successful. We are confident that these factors combined will enable us to get the right partner, deal structure and risk-reward profile that benefit Remedy and are the best fit for the Control franchise.”

This statement is especially notable as Remedy’s most recent release – Alan Wake 2 – was published by Epic Games, meaning the PC version is currently exclusive to the Epic Games Store. As of right now, it is unknown whether Alan Wake 2 will ever come to Steam.

Unlike most other timed Epic Games Store exclusives, Alan Wake 2 (as well as Alan Wake Remastered) were actually published by Epic Games themselves – leaving its future on other PC platforms unknown.

That said, it is exciting to see that given the success of Alan Wake 2, Remedy are now in a much better position to hopefully bring their future titles to more platforms on their own terms.

While we were under the impression that Remedy Entertainment already owned the Control IP, it turns out that was not the case. A few years ago, Remedy obtained the rights to Alan Wake back from Microsoft and now, Remedy has also parted with a chunk of cash to buy the full rights to Control from the game's publisher, 505 Games.

In an announcement today, Remedy has confirmed that it has spent €17 million to acquire the full rights to Control from 505 Games. While the game was developed by Remedy from the ground up, 505 Games took on publishing duties and it seems part of that deal included partial ownership of rights. Now, Remedy is in full control of the IP moving forward, paving the way for sequels and cross-overs with its other franchises.

This move makes plenty of sense, as Remedy Entertainment is angling to set up its own cross-IP games universe, connecting titles like Control and Alan Wake with shared themes, concepts and character appearances. Remedy first kicked this off with Control's second DLC, which featured an appearance from Alan Wake. A future DLC for Alan Wake 2 is set to further intertwine the two games.

Aside from the full rights to Control, Remedy now also has the rights to Concord, an in-development project that has not yet been formally announced or shown to the public.

KitGuru Says: I've said this many times but Control is one of my absolute favourite games in recent years. I'm glad to see that Remedy won't have to worry about shared rights or gaining approvals from third-parties as it continues to develop the series. We still don't have a release date for Control 2, but we do know it is in the works, so hopefully we'll learn more about it soon.

Remedy made its plans for an inter-connected universe of games well known with the second expansion for Control, which featured a tie-in with Alan Wake. Now, it looks like this cross-universe worldbuilding will continue with an upcoming expansion for Alan Wake 2.

Alan Wake 2 officially launched last week to huge critical acclaim. Despite some initial performance concerns based on the game's high PC system requirements, the final product runs pretty well across a range of machines and has very scalable graphics options. Now that the game is out, Remedy is turning its attention to future content, with two expansions planned for the game.

The first expansion will focus on Night Springs, a fictional TV show in Alan Wake. The second expansion is equally interesting, taking place at The Lake House, a mysterious facility being used by an independent government organisation to conduct secret research. That sure sounds a lot like the AWE experiments we saw at The Oldest House in Control.

Given that Control and Alan Wake have crossed over previously it makes sense that The Lake House would be used to further intertwine those two universes. After Alan Wake 2, it is highly likely that Remedy's next big single-player game will be a sequel to Control as well.

KitGuru Says: I'm interested in seeing how Remedy expands on its multiverse. With that said, Control and Alan Wake are distinctively different games, so there may only be so much collaboration that makes sense.

Remedy Entertainment have been a big part of the video games industry for decades now, responsible for influential and well-known IP such as Max Payne alongside more niche successes like Alan Wake. The studio has grown rapidly in the past few years – and so in recognition of this change Remedy Entertainment has announced a new visual identity with an updated logo and more.

Making the announcement on their blog, Remedy Entertainment said “A few years ago, as our studio has been transforming from creating a single game at a time to making several simultaneously and expanding beyond the borders of Finland, to a second location in Stockholm, Sweden, we embarked on a mission to refine our visual identity. We haven’t updated our logo in more than 20 years. That is, until now.”

Explaining the this new visual identity and how it compares to the Remedy of old, the studio claimed that “The bullet in the letter R in the old logo represented the era of Max Payne, but the Remedy of now is much bigger than a single game; we have a whole portfolio of games, new and old. It was time to update and redefine our visual identity to bring more consistency, showcase our evolution over the years, and better express our vision of today’s Remedy.”

The team concluded by saying “We want to create memorable worlds, stories, and characters for you to experience through our games. We wanted our new logo to reflect how we constantly evolve and continue creating exciting games with the very best people. However, it’s all still one Remedy where courageous creativity thrives. We hope you like the new look. Our future is incredibly exciting. Despite almost three decades in the game industry, in many ways it feels we are only getting started. You can look forward to Alan Wake 2 later this year and several great Remedy experiences to play in the coming years.”

The new Remedy logo is rather slick and its visual design seems in line with the likes of their more recent projects such as the SCP-inspired ‘Control’. Despite this new identity, hopefully Remedy retains the uniqueness that they have held for almost 30 years.

Control represents one of Remedy Entertainment’s most recent and biggest success stories, with the weird 3rd-person action adventure shooter amassing a player base of over 10 million. 10 million players does not mean 10 million copies sold, but when it comes to sales, Control has performed well for the studio, having officially surpassed 3 million copies since its release.

Digital Bros. Entertainment recently published their fiscal report for the first half of FY2022/23, discussing the state of the holding company’s subsidiaries. One of these is 505 Games – the publisher behind Remedy Entertainment’s Control. According to the report, since its release in 2019, Control has gone on to sell over 3 million copies and has generated 92 million Euros.

Control was given a relatively modest budget of under 30 million Euros meaning that the title has generated more than 3 times its budget – making it an undeniable success.

It was already known that a sequel to Control is on its way and that the game would have a bigger budget, but we now have more concrete numbers, with Digital Bros. revealing that Control 2’s budget is nearly double that of the first game (with an initial investment of 50 million).

Additionally, it has been revealed that ‘Condor’, a co-op multiplayer spin-off of Control, has received an initial investment of 25 million Euros – though both the budgets for it and Control 2 could increase over time.

Control was certainly one of the more unique titles released in 2019 and with the game being a bona fide success, it will be exciting to see what the team at Remedy Entertainment has planned for this bigger upcoming sequel.

Today, Remedy announced that it has signed with 505 Games once again to co-develop and co-publish Control 2. The game was previously in development under the codename ‘Heron', which was in the concept stage in late 2021. According to today's announcement, the game is still in the concept stage, so it will be quite a while before we get to see the game in action.

Control 2’s initial development budget amounts to €50 million, and Remedy will retain the ownership of the game’s intellectual property. The development, marketing, and post-launch investments as well as the future net revenues generated by the game will be equally split between 505 Games and Remedy.

The game will be available on PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S, and it will be built on Remedy’s proprietary Northlight engine and tools.

Last week during an earnings call, Remedy Entertainment gave us some interesting updates on a few of its projects. Unfortunately, we won't be seeing Alan Wake 2 this summer, but the game is still on track for 2023. The studio also gave updates on new Control titles, the Max Payne remakes and its upcoming multiplayer game, Vanguard.

Currently, Remedy's main focus is Alan Wake 2, which is in “full production” and on track to release next year. Aside from that, Remedy is also prototyping a sequel to Control, and is also working on a Control spin-off game.

The recently announced Max Payne 1 and 2 remakes are also in the early stages of development, listed at the concept stage, a very early phase of pre-production to lay down the vision and scope for the project.

Finally, Remedy's free to play multiplayer title, codenamed ‘Vanguard', is currently described as making “good progress” in collaboration with Tencent, so we may get another update on that game later this year.

KitGuru Says: It will be interesting to see if there is anymore crossover between Alan Wake and Control in each game's respective sequel. What Remedy game are you most looking forward to?

Each day, Epic Games is giving away a different title for free to all those with an Epic Games account as part of the store front’s 15 days of free games. Right now, you can get your hands on Remedy Entertainment’s award-winning action-adventure title CONTROL.

Available to purchase for free until 4pm (GMT) later today, Control is the latest original game to come from the much-loved Finnish studio Remedy Entertainment, known for hits such as Alan Wake and the original Max Payne duology.

Originally released in 2019, Control took the best elements from Remedy’s past and combined it into an action-adventure title with a unique explorable world, fun and interesting gameplay, and an impressive physics system which made for a game that not only felt good to play, but also to watch, listen and simply absorb its world.

One of the most visually-striking and personality-filled games in recent memory, Control was clearly the byproduct of a strong sense of design and purposeful intent. It seemed to have resonated with fans too, as the game surpassed 10 million players.

With more games set in the world of Control confirmed to be on the way, those who have not yet played the game can now do so for the price of free. Furthermore, while the game's season pass is not included, it is currently 60% off – costing just £4.79.

Control was widely regarded as one of 2019’s best games, and so if you have not yet played it, there is now no excuse to not do so. Control can be purchased for free HERE.

One of the big benefits of cloud gaming is the instant access to games, without the need to wait for installs or downloads. It also paves the way for developers to offer limited-time access to titles in a controlled way, without needing to spend resources and development time creating a separate demo build. Now, Google Stadia is finally taking advantage of this idea, offering limited-time demos for select titles.

As we reported last week, Stadia began offering timed 30-minute demos for select titles in late October, starting off with Hello Neighbour. Now, Google has partnered with some of its bigger publishing partners to offer titles, including Ubisoft's Riders Republic and Control: Ultimate Edition from Remedy Entertainment.

Both games are now freely playable through Stadia without the need for a subscription or a Stadia account. However, you will need 30 minutes of your schedule cleared, as once you activate the demo, you only have 30 minutes to play, as the system goes on real time and not play-time.

This also opens up an opportunity for more people to try Stadia and see how it performs on their devices, without having to invest any money into the service through subscribing to Stadia Pro or buying a particular game.

KitGuru says: Stadia is still kicking around for now. It's just a shame forward-thinking features like this weren't already in place at launch.

The other major titles included are Dragon Age Inquisition and Rise of the Tomb Raider. We've known something new was going to happen with Alan Wake ever since Remedy Entertainment acquired the rights to the IP back in 2019, and we later learned that the events of Alan Wake and Control take place in the same universe. Today, Remedy Entertainment has officially announced Alan Wake Remastered, set to arrive this autumn.

Announced by creative director Sam Lake on The Sudden Stop fan site, Alan Wake Remastered will be published by Epic Games and is a cross-generation title, with availability on PC,  Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, Xbox One S and Xbox One X. For the first time in the game's history, it will also be coming to Playstation, including both PS4/Pro and PS5.

We've already reported that the game will be built using Remedy's Northlight Engine, including ray traced reflections on PC and current-gen consoles. Control was also built with the Northlight Engine and features a variety of other ray traced effects on PC, but we're not yet sure if there will be any additional features for the PC version that won't present on console. DLSS support, for instance, is yet to be announced for PC, despite Control being one of the first games to support DLSS 2.0.

Additionally, Alan Wake Remastered will include both of the game's expansions, The Signal and The Writer, with the game touting an all-new ‘4K' experience.

We don't have a confirmed release date just yet, but Remedy is touting availability for ‘fall 2021', while earlier leaks suggested a launch date of October 5.

Over the weekend, Alan Wake Remastered leaked ahead of a reveal planned for later this week. Now, we have some new details about the remaster, with sources saying that the new version will use a new engine.

According to sources speaking with Nintendo Pal, Alan Wake Remastered is going to use the Northlight Engine, the same in-house engine used for Control, but the similarities don't end there. Like Control, Alan Wake Remastered will also make use of ray-tracing effects, with ray-traced reflections being present on PC, Xbox Series X and PS5. It is unclear if other effects will be used, such as ray-traced shadows.

As you would expect, Alan Wake Remastered will jump from 30FPS on the original Xbox 360 version to 60FPS. Players will also benefit from higher resolutions and quality of life changes.

According to previous retail leaks, Alan Wake Remastered will be launching on the 5th of October, although Remedy has yet to announce this officially.

Remedy Entertainment is known for creating weird and interesting third person action games. From Max Payne to Alan Wake, the studio’s titles have often been seen as cult hits. It seems Control is one of the team’s biggest successes yet, as the title has surpassed 10 million players – gifting the game’s sequel an even bigger budget.

As part of the company’s latest financial reports, development studio Remedy Entertainment revealed that their latest title – Control – “has already reached a formidable audience, having been played by over 10 million players. The growing audience and brand awareness are valuable as we continue to support Control.”

They continued, discussing the future of this new franchise by saying “we are in the early conception phase for a future, bigger-budget Control game,” which will be facilitated by an even larger team – as it was revealed that Remedy Entertainment is now formed of over 300 employees.

It was known that Control had been successful enough to warrant further entries in what has now become a franchise. It is exciting however to see the game surpass the 10 million players mark – even if that doesn’t necessarily mean number of copies sold (the game was made available to PS Plus subscribers as well as PlayStation Now for a limited time). The future of Control looks to be bright.

Control is the latest game from Finnish video game developer Remedy Entertainment. Known for cult titles such as Alan Wake, Control helped push the studio into new heights. While Remedy Entertainment currently have a lot on their plate – working on 5 different titles – the studio has now confirmed that they are also developing a multiplayer spin-off of Control.

Making the announcement on their website, the game director for Control, Mikael Kasurinen, said “today Remedy Entertainment and 505 Games announced that we have signed a new game, codenamed Condor, which is a spin-off set to expand the world we kicked off with Control.”

Expanding on this spin-off, Kasurinen said “Control is first and foremost a world, a place for multitudes of stories, events, and characters. A place where unexpected, strange, and extraordinary things occur. We kicked it off with Jesse’s entry into the Oldest House, but there is more to this world. Oh, so much more. And Project Condor will be an expression of that.”

While Remedy Entertainment are primarily known for making single player games, Kasurinen stressed that “I believe we can create shared experiences without compromising the unique DNA of who we are, or the stories we want to tell. Yes, we need to re-think our angles, our techniques, our mindset, but we see it as an exciting challenge: What would a Remedy multiplayer game look like?”

He concluded by offering a small look at the future of the – now – franchise, saying ‘Control is more than one location, character, or story. We have more. Something ambitious. As today’s announcement stated, “have outlined high-level collaboration terms to further expand the Control franchise with a bigger-budget Control-game”. I unfortunately cannot go into more detail than that, but suffice to say, I’m extremely excited for the future of the Control franchise.'

Each week, the Epic Games Store offers a free game or two to all of those with an EGS account. After a week of teasing a mystery title, the storefront has now revealed that this week’s free game is Remedy’s Control – a unique and atmospheric third-person action adventure shooter.

Available to purchase for free from now until the 17th of June at 4pm BST (but will remain in your library indefinitely), Control is the latest game from the unique minds at Remedy Entertainment. Known for developing Alan Wake and Max Payne, Control takes all of the best elements from the studio’s previous projects, making a game that is both fun to play with satisfying shooting and movement mechanics, while also offering an intriguing and atmospheric world with which to explore.

The game is also visually impressive, utilising the industry’s latest technologies including ray-tracing, DLSS, and realistic physics, making for a showpiece title. Control’s Season Pass is also currently 50% off, allowing you to experience the full award-winning title for just £5.99.

Alongside Control, Genshin Impact has also been added to the store. Originally a free-to-play title anyway, Genshin Impact previously required a separate launcher to play. It coming to the Epic Games Store makes for one less launcher required. Furthermore, using the code ‘GenshinEpic’ players can obtain some free in-game items.

Remedy Entertainment has been  going from strength to strength, both in the eyes of fans, as well as in the number and scope of its projects. The studio has now given an update on the next game from the team behind Control, revealing that they have moved onto an “exciting early-phase project.”

As part of its Q1 2021 business review, Remedy entertainment revealed that “Almost all of our internal Control developers have now moved on to work on other Remedy projects, including a new, exciting early-phase project”. Remedy of course has multiple teams working on a number of different titles, though this “early-phase project” seems to be the studio’s next flagship title.

Remedy also offered updates on its other projects, claiming that “the Crossfire team is finalizing the single-player operations for Smilegate’s CrossfireX and Crossfire HD. With both of these games launching in 2021, this is a significant year for Crossfire.”

Furthermore, “Remedy’s AAA game project with Epic Games is soon moving into full production, and the second, smaller-scale game continues in full production mode.”

Lastly, discussing their multiplayer efforts, “With Vanguard, our free-to-play co-op game project, we have now defined many of the core elements of the game. Development progresses at a good pace, internal playtesting continues, and we are starting the next phase of closed external gameplay testing.”

Despite control releasing in 2019, it seems that its follow up is still a ways away. That being said, with the growth that the studio has shown from game to game, it is exciting to see what becomes of all of their upcoming titles – but especially this new “early-phase project.”

Remedy Entertainment is an interesting game studio which has historically focused on creating unique third person action games with interesting mechanics. Following the success of Control, it would seem the studio is working on more projects than ever before, with Remedy reportedly working with “four teams across five games.”

In the past, Remedy Entertainment has focused on one game at a time, relying on the support of publishers such as Microsoft Game Studios in order to facilitate the development and release of their games, which operate at a high level of quality. Thanks to the success of Control however, which sold over 2 million copies, Remedy Entertainment is in a better position than ever before.

As reported by Gamesindustry.biz, the studio is currently working on 5 games, across 4 different teams. Their A-team, which worked on Control, is currently working on “the studio's next big title”. The second team is reportedly developing ‘Vanguard’, a new IP that has been described as a co-operative multiplayer title. This game will be self-published.

The third team is working on the single-player component of the highly popular Crossfire X title, a trailer of which was shown off last year. The final team is said to be working on two titles which will be set in a shared universe. Both games will be published by Epic Games, and so will most likely be Epic Games Store exclusive on PC. While no further details were given, Control and Alan Wake have already crossed paths, and so it is possible that these titles may be set in the same universe.

Remedy Entertainment has had its ups and downs over its 25 year history. Fortunately, it seems as though the studio is in a better position than it's ever been, allowing the studio more freedom to continue making weird and unique games.

Each month Sony offers a number of titles for free to all those who are subscribed to the console manufacturer’s PlayStation Plus service. For the month of february, subscribers can get their hands on a number of major titles, including Control Ultimate Edition and the brand new Destruction AllStars.

With the recent launch of the PlayStation 5, Sony have begun to offer a free PS5 title in its monthly PS Plus line-up. This month however, subscribers can get their hands on two PS5 titles – one cross gen and another next gen exclusive – as well as a PS4 game available via backwards compatibility.

The three games available for free for February are:

  • Destruction AllStars (PS5)
  • Control Ultimate Edition  (PS5 & PS4)
  • Concrete Genie (PS4)

Destruction AllStars is a brand new PS5 exclusive title which sees you “Entertain the crowds by bringing controlled chaos to the vehicular combat arena of this metal-crunching multiplayer game” as players “pick one of 16 superstar competitors, then leap into four game modes, using timing, tactics and skills to cause carnage behind the wheel or create havoc with your parkour skills.”

Control Ultimate Edition is a rerelease of the 2019 action-adventure title from Remedy Entertainment. Playable on both PS4 and PS5, the PS5 version comes with a number of enhancements including 60fps gameplay or ray-tracing.

Concrete Genie is a heartwarming first-party action-adventure title which has players “pick up a magic paintbrush and return the polluted town of Denska to its former bright and bustling seaside self.”

Control and Concrete Genie will be available to purchase for free to all those with a PS Plus subscription from the 2nd of February until the 1st of March, while Destruction AllStars will remain available to purchase until the 5th of April.

Control tested the limits of the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One in many ways when it launched in 2019. With the release of the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S, console players can now experience the story of Jesse Faden in a way much closer to that of PC players. Control Ultimate Edition, which launches next week on the 2nd of February for PS5 and Series X|S, has now had its next-gen enhancements detailed.

505Games, the publishers of Control, have detailed exactly what enhancements PS5 and Xbox Series X|S players can expect when playing Control Ultimate Edition on these newest systems.

On the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X, players will be able to choose between two modes: Performance mode and Graphics mode. Performance mode “Targets 60fps performance with 1440p render resolution and 4K output” while the Graphics mode “Targets 30fps performance with ray tracing (transparency and reflections) at 1220p render resolution and 4K output.”

The Xbox Series S meanwhile will only offer the Performance mode, however it will run at “60fps with no ray tracing, at 900p render resolution, and 1080p output”. According to 505Games, “This is a limitation of the hardware, not the game.”

Lastly, PS5 users will receive a few bonus features. Control on PS5 will arrive with full DualSense support for both the triggers and haptics, and will also include “Cards and videos that help guide you through the game, and keep track of your progress” using the console’s ‘Activities’ feature.

Control felt like a next-gen game on old-gen hardware in many ways on the PS4 and Xbox One, and so it’ll be interesting to see just how big of an improvement these PS5 and Series X versions truly are.

There have been rumours about Control coming to Xbox Game Pass floating around for a while now. The game officially came to the service for console subscribers back in December but now, the PC version of Game Pass is also getting the game, complete with ray-tracing enhancements.

As of the 21st of January, Control will be part of the Xbox Game Pass for PC library. We don't know how long it will remain there, but it should stick around for a few months, which is plenty of time to play through the full game.

If you're a new RTX GPU owner, then Control is a game well worth checking out to get a glimpse at how good ray-tracing can be. Remedy Entertainment worked with Nvidia to ensure Control would be one of the best looking games with RT effects in place.

Control was also updated to take advantage of DLSS 2.0, giving the game a much cleaner look while using Nvidia's performance boosting technology. Ray-tracing will be coming to the Xbox Series X/S and PS5 versions of Control next month as part of a next-gen console graphical update.

Remedy Entertainment announced that it would be bringing enhancements to Control: Ultimate Edition for next-gen consoles earlier this year. Unfortunately, the upgrade was pushed out of 2020 and into 2021. However, we do get our first look at the upgrade today thanks to a new teaser video.

Control: Ultimate Edition contains the base game, all patches and both DLC expansion packs. In a controversial move, base game and season pass owners of the original release of Control are not eligible for the next-gen upgrade.

In the teaser video above, we get a quick look at what to expect. Some of the enhancements coming to Xbox Series X/S and PS5 include new performance and graphics modes. In performance mode, you'll get 60 frames per second. Meanwhile in graphical mode, you'll get a big visual boost.

One of the big pieces to this visual upgrade is the addition of ray-tracing on next-gen consoles. Previously, this was a PC-only feature. The next-gen upgrade for Control Ultimate Edition will come to Xbox Series consoles and PS5 on the 2nd of February.

KitGuru Says: It will be interesting to revisit Control on next-gen consoles, I'm particularly interested in seeing comparisons between ray-tracing on consoles and the PC version. Are any of you planning on playing Control on a next-gen console?

Remedy’s Control released last year to a positive reception from both fans and critics alike. The game later went on to be nominated for Game of the Year at the 2019 game awards. Now, a little over a year after its launch, Control has officially sold over 2 million copies.

In a Tweet by Remedy’s Communications Director, Thomas Puha, it was revealed that “Control has sold over 2 million copies to date”. Even more interesting however is the fact that November 2020 was the game’s best month sales-wise, despite the fact that the game launched all the way back in August 2019.

The reason for this resurgence in sales could be due to a number of factors. While the game originally launched for the PS4, Xbox One and PC, Control received a re-release recently in the form of an Ultimate Edition, which offered a number of improvements for next-gen systems. Furthermore,  Control also landed onto the Nintendo Switch in the form of a ‘cloud version’ which allowed owners to stream the game to the hybrid handheld.

2 million copies is certainly praise-worthy, though the game still has a long way to go to match some of Remedy’s other games. Alan Wake reportedly sold around 4.5 million copies, while  the original Max Payne shifted 4 million copies. Control appears to have sold better than the team’s previous game ‘Quantum Break’ however, which never received any official sales figures.

Following on from the success of Control, it’ll be interesting to see what the team has planned next. We already know that Remedy is currently working on a campaign mode for the popular game CrossfireX, but beyond that is unknown and exciting.

A couple of months ago, Remedy Entertainment has announced Control: Ultimate Edition, an all-content included version of the game, which will also serve as the next-gen console version. Initially, the Xbox Series X/S and PS5 versions were due to arrive close to launch but a last minute delay has pushed the game into 2021.

Control: Ultimate Edition includes ‘The Foundation’ and ‘AWE’, as well as the free updates that Remedy released along the way, tying everything together in one package. For Xbox Series X/S and PS5 buyers, you'll have to wait a bit longer for this game to arrive, as Remedy announced a delay earlier today:

Unfortunately for those who bought the base game and season pass on current-gen consoles, you will not be getting a free upgrade to the Ultimate Edition. You have to own the Ultimate Edition to gain access to next-gen graphical upgrades.

A new release date for Control: Ultimate Edition on next-gen consoles has yet to be announced outside of a vague ‘early 2021' window.

KitGuru Says: Control: Ultimate Edition will take a bit longer to hit next-gen but from the sounds of it, the delay won't be too drastic. Are any of you planning on getting a next-gen console close to launch?

Nintendo has experimented with cloud versions of games in Japan previously, with ‘cloud version' releases for both Resident Evil VII and Assassin's Creed Odyssey. Now, cloud versions of new titles are starting to come to the Switch in other territories too, starting with Control and Hitman 3.

Control: Ultimate Edition Cloud Version has been announced for the Nintendo Switch today, as announced during a Direct Partner presentation.

Aside from that, a Cloud Version of Hitman 3 is coming to Switch in January 2021 alongside the release of the game on other platforms.

This appears to be Nintendo's new tactic for keeping up with big third-party releases as next-gen consoles begin to spread. However, there are a lot of unanswered questions, as we don't know what service Nintendo is relying on to stream these games to customers, nor do we know how well this will work on a broad scale outside of Japan.

KitGuru Says: The WiFi chip inside the Nintendo Switch isn't the best, so I am curious to see how well this all ends up working. What do you think of the idea of ‘cloud versions' of games coming to Switch?

Just a few weeks ago, publisher 505 Games caused controversy when it announced that Control Deluxe Edition and Season Pass owners on console would need to re-purchase the Ultimate Edition in order to gain access to next-gen enhancements when upgrading to Xbox Series X or PS5. At the time, 505 Games claimed it was impossible to provide the upgrade to non-Ultimate Edition owners. This has now proven to be a lie.

This week on PS4 and Xbox One, some owners of Control Digital Deluxe Edition noticed that they had been upgraded to Control: Ultimate Edition by mistake. By being granted the Ultimate Edition, they would be entitled to next-gen enhancements when the Xbox Series X and PS5 launch. This essentially disproves 505 Games' earlier statement, in which the publisher claimed it was not possible to grant an upgrade to Digital Deluxe edition owners of the original game.

Those that were granted the Ultimate Edition upgrade by mistake have since had their games reverted to their previous form. At this point in time, neither Remedy Entertainment or 505 Games have commented on the error.

We also don't yet know what enhancements will be included in the next-gen version of Control, or when the upgrade patch will ship out to owners of the game.

KitGuru Says: 505 Games is going to get some extra heat now, particularly since it has now been proven perfectly possible to upgrade digital deluxe edition owners to the Ultimate Edition – a version of the game that contains the exact same content.

Last week, Control publisher, 505 Games, caused some controversy amongst Control players. Control Ultimate Edition was announced and it was confirmed that anyone who buys this version of the game on current-gen consoles will get a next-gen upgrade for free when the PS5 and Xbox Series X come out. This leaves out those who bought the game and season pass already, forcing dedicated fans to miss out on a next-gen version unless they buy the game again. Now, 505 Games has tried to justify this move.

In a post titled ‘Control Ultimate Edition – An Explanation‘, 505 Games says: “We spent several months exploring all of our launch options for Control Ultimate Edition and no decision was taken lightly. While it is challenging bringing any game to next gen platforms, we quickly realised it was even more difficult to upgrade our current user base to next gen with full parity across platforms with our year-old game.”

The post then continues to say: “Every avenue we pursued, there was some form of blocker and those blockers meant that at least one group of players ended up being left out of the upgrade for various reasons. As of today, we can’t offer an upgrade to everyone, and leaving any one group out feels unfair. We understand that is not what you want to hear.”

So essentially, the post boils down to ‘sorry, but deal with it'. The odd thing here is 505 Games' claim that it could not find a way to give current gen owners of the game and season pass an upgrade to the next-gen version. Many other publishers are doing this for games already, including CD Projekt Red with Cyberpunk 2077, Ubisoft with Assassin's Creed Valhalla and EA with Madden 21. 505 Games does not specify what its ‘blockers' were, but the fact that other publishers are able to roll out fairer next-gen upgrade programs, there is reason to be sceptical that these blockers even exist.

KitGuru Says: Control is a great game that ran quite poorly on current-gen consoles, making this Ultimate Edition situation even more of a shame, especially to those that already own the game and DLCs, leaving little to no need for a separate Ultimate Edition purchase.

Ahead of the launch of Control's second and final expansion later this month, Remedy Entertainment has announced Control: Ultimate Edition, which will be the game's debut on Steam and will also be available on next-gen consoles.

Control: Ultimate Edition includes ‘The Foundation' and ‘AWE', as well as the free updates that Remedy released along the way, tying everything together in one package.

There is some controversy though. While Control is already available on Xbox One and PS4, the base version of the game will not carry over to next-gen consoles. Instead, only Control: Ultimate Edition buyers will get a free upgrade from current-gen to the next-gen version. This news has caused a stir but hopefully with enough fan engagement, Remedy and publisher 505 Games can be convinced to include current owners of Control in this next-gen upgrade scheme.

Control: Ultimate Edition releases on Steam, Epic Games Store, Xbox One and PS4 on the 27th of August. A digital version will be available for Xbox Series X and PlayStation 5 before the end of 2020, with boxed physical copies coming for next-gen consoles in early 2021.

KitGuru Says: I already own the season pass for Control, so there isn't any reason for me to jump on the Ultimate Edition. It should be a good package for those who missed out on the game the first time around though.

Sam Lake, creative director at Remedy Entertainment, has officially confirmed the Remedy Connected Universe. Following in the footsteps of comic books and films, Remedy is working towards a future where all of its games are connected in some way, on a deeper level than just Easter eggs.

This all kicks off with the new Control Expansion ‘AWE', which will see Alan Wake cross over with Control. As it turns out, the story that took place in Alan Wake is one of the cases that the Federal Bureau of Control has been investigating, paving the way for the two series to connect.

According to Sam Lake, this is something that Remedy has wanted to do for the last ten years and is now starting to come to fruition:

“For over 10 years, we’ve had a crazy dream. The idea that the tales told in some of our games would be connected to each other, a connected world of stories and events with shared characters and lore. Each game is a stand-alone experience, but each game is also a doorway into a larger universe with exciting opportunities for crossover events.”

The post teases that this is just “a humble beginning”, adding that future Remedy games are already in the works, taking place in the same universe.

KitGuru Says: This is an interesting idea and should be satisfying for those who have played Alan Wake and Control. We'll be looking forward to seeing how this begins coming to fruition in the AWE expansion in a few weeks time.

Back in March, Remedy's latest thriller, Control, received its first expansion, expanding on the history of ‘The Oldest House', where the game is set. Now, the second expansion is on its way, dubbed ‘AWE', which will also introduce an Alan Wake crossover of some kind.

The teaser trailer for Control Expansion 2, AWE, was revealed during Sony's State of Play stream last night. It clocks in at just one-minute long but it serves as a good teaser for what's to come.

As we can see, there will be some new enemies, environments, puzzles, weapon abilities and of course, a cameo from Alan Wake somewhere along the way. Alan Wake making his way over to Control may sound like it makes no sense, but if you've played the game, then you can figure out how Remedy may fit such a moment in.

The AWE expansion centres around the Investigation Sector, which was sealed off from the rest of the building many years before Jesse Faden's arrival. While exploring, you will figure out what happened there and attempt to put an end to a mysterious being haunting the area.

Control's second expansion officially releases on the 27th of August across PC, Xbox One and PS4.

KitGuru Says: I'm looking forward to diving back into Control to explore all of the extra content that has been added since release last year. Are many of you planning on jumping back in for this next expansion?
