Historically, premium 13″-class ultraportable laptops have been the domain of Intel low-power chips. However, AMD fought that position fiercely with Zen 2 Ryzen 4000U and aims to continue doing so with Zen 3 Ryzen 5000U.

In this review, we have a couple of very comparable ASUS ZenBook 13” laptops and we will be using them to pit AMD’s new Ryzen 7 5800U APU against Intel’s competing Core i7-1165G7. With both chips running at relatively low power states around the 15W mark – not the 25W+ gas guzzling mode we often see in bigger gaming-type devices – this should make for an interesting comparison.

13”-class ultraportable laptops can be ideal for those who need a decent amount of processing grunt alongside excellent battery life and the ability to quickly sling the device into a backpack or handbag on the way to work or school.

We want to see just how fast AMD's new Zen 3-based Ryzen 7 5800U APU is for ultraportable configurations. And we test that by running the AMD chip inside an ASUS ZenBook 13 OLED UM325S laptop. Direct comparison for a Tiger Lake Core i7-1165G7 processors at equivalent power modes comes from the ASUS ZenBook Flip S OLED UX371 laptop.

Let's take a closer look at these two devices.

Razer has updated the Blade Stealth 13 gaming ultrabook with the new Intel Core i7-1165G7. The only parts that were updated in the 2020 refresh of the Blade Stealth 13 are the CPU and display options, but models with the Intel 10th Gen processors are still available for the time being.

The Razer Blade Stealth 13 is a gaming ultrabook aimed at delivering the best gaming performance in the smallest laptop possible. In Razer Blade Stealth 2020's refresh, the company added the option to equip it with the Intel Tiger Lake Core i7-1165G7 CPU and a FullHD OLED display option with a 60Hz refresh rate and touch support instead of a 4K display with those same features.

Intel Core i7-1165G7 has the same core configuration as the previous 1065G7 processors used in the Razer Blade Stealth 13. The difference lies in the core clock speed, which now reaches up to 4.7GHz (+0.8GHz over its predecessor) thanks to Intel's 10nm Super Fin architecture. Regarding to the display options, the 4K OLED option with touch support is now only available in older models featuring Intel Ice Lake processors. The new FullHD OLED option comes factory-calibrated to cover 100% of the DCI-P3 colour gamut.

The rest of the main specs of the 2020 refreshed models are the same as the 2019 model, featuring 16GB of RAM, a GeForce GTX 1650Ti Max-Q, a 512GB SSD, and Windows 10 Home. On the outside, it also remains unchanged, featuring the same CNC machined black body and connectivity options: 2x USB-C ports, 2 USB-A ports, and an audio-out 3.5mm jack. Additionally, there's a still a display option with a 120Hz refresh rate and FullHD resolution on both 2019 and 2020 models.

The Razer Blade Stealth 13 laptops featuring the Intel Tiger Lake Core i7-1165G7 CPU are expected to release this fall. The 120Hz display model will be priced at $1799.99, while the 4K display will be available for $1999.99. You can learn more about the Razer Stealth 13 HERE.

We've got our first indicator of Intel 11th Gen ‘Tiger Lake' CPU performance this week, as a couple of upcoming Lenovo laptops sporting new CPUs were spotted on the Geekbench database. One of these laptops housed an Intel Core i5-1135G7, while the other was running an Intel Core i7-1165G7.

Both the Intel Core i5-1135G7 and the Core i7-1165G7 are 4C/8T processors using Intel's Tiger Lake architecture. This is the successor to Ice Lake and also the first Intel CPU to use 10nm Willow Cove cores and integrated Intel Xe graphics.

The key differences between these two processors can be found in the iGPU and the base/boost frequency. The Core i5-1135G7's iGPU is clocked at 1.3GHz, and has 80 CUs and 3GB of video memory, while the CPU base/boost frequency is 2.40/4.20GHz. The Core i7-1165G7 has a CPU base/boost frequency of 2.80/4.70GHz and uses an iGPU also clocked at 1.3GHz, but with 96CUs, and 6GB of video memory.

When comparing the iGPUs in both Tiger Lake processors, the score of the Core i7-1165G7 iGPU (59845) beats the score of the Core i5-1135G7 iGPU (51741) by 15.7%. Regular leaker, TUM_APISAK, also shared a comparison of CPU performance between the Tiger Lake Core i7 and Core i5, with the former offering 11.4% better single-core performance and 9% better multi-core performance.

Additional comparisons were found via @_rogame, who points out that the iGPU of the Intel Core i7-1165G7 is on par with Nvidia's MX350 mobile GPU. It's clear that there are distinct workloads where one wins over the other, but in the end, the total scores of both GPUs are very similar.

Intel Tiger Lake powered laptops are expected to launch in Q3 2020.
