Bethesda is unlikely to get around to Fallout 5 until the end of this decade, as the company plans to tackle The Elder Scrolls 6 before making a new Fallout game. This has left fans asking for Obsidian to step in and make a new spin-off similar to Fallout New Vegas. We've heard that Obsidian would be interested and curiously enough, references to New Vegas 2 have now been found on SteamDB.

SteamDB tracks backend updates to various games on Steam. On the 4th of April, a new branch was added to Fallout 4, labelled as “newvegas2”. This development branch was later deleted after fans started asking questions.

Bethesda is currently working on a ‘next gen' update for Fallout 4, which is due sometime this year. It is entirely possible that “newvegas2” didn't refer to a sequel, but rather a new version of the game with upgrades to bring it up to modern standards. That could include an upgrade to Fallout 4's version of the Creation Engine. It is also possible that this is related to Creation Club content, like a New Vegas content pack with weapons, armour and building materials.

With all of that said, fans are eager to see a New Vegas sequel and Microsoft and Bethesda would be silly to leave Fallout sitting for another seven to eight years when they have Obsidian sitting right there.

KitGuru Says: This is unlikely to be proof that a New Vegas sequel is coming, but it does show that something is happening with New Vegas behind the scenes. Hopefully we'll hear more on that before the end of the year.

Bethesda's Creation Club may have had an unceremonious launch on Fallout 4 but it seems the publisher wants to make its launch on Skyrim at least a little more exciting. One of the first mods hitting Skyrim's new mod program will be a survival mode, adding hunger, fatigue and weather-oriented survival systems.

While a Skyrim survival mode is far more exciting than what rolled out on the Creation Club in Fallout 4, those familiar with the Skyrim modding scene will be aware that something similar already exists in the form of ‘Frostfall'. Making matters worse, Bethesda's version of Skyrim survival will only be free for one week when it launches on each platform.

Skyrim Survival will split the map into different climate zones, so you will need to plan accordingly before adventuring off into a new part of the world. Health doesn't regenerate in this mode either and you will need to find a bed at night in order to level up.

No price has been specified for the mode after the first week, which is worrying, as the prices for mods in Fallout 4 were well above what most would consider reasonable. If you want to check out the mod ahead of time, then you can opt into Skyrim: Special Edition's Steam beta. Eventually though, Bethesda will slap a price tag on it.

KitGuru Says: This mod is already an improvement over Bethesda's entire Fallout 4 rollout but ultimately, it will all come down to price. If Bethesda can't get its pricing in order, then the Creation Club won't end up taking off.

Paid mods have never been particularly popular and the same rings true for Bethesda’s Creation Club, whether it’s selling small lots of content or intrusively downloading pieces without your permission. Ironically, a mod has since been created to block all Creation Club news in Fallout 4, and needless to say, it is rather popular.

Since update 1.10.20 went live for Fallout 4 at the end of last month, a large advertisement for Bethesda’s Creation Club tool appears in the top right hand corner of the main menu. Of course, this is only while you’re at the main menu, but for modder ‘InAComaDial999’, it was principle to have this removed as soon as possible.

The mod, called No More Creation Club News currently sits as the second most voted-for mod on Fallout 4’s page on Nexus Mods. After installing the mod, it does exactly as its name states, removing the news from sight and along with it, the promotional offer of obtaining 100 credits to use on the store.

Controversy over the Creation Club arose when Bethesda went back on its word that previously free mods would remain free and that proper vetting processes would be used before inducting new mods onto the store. This has caused outrage and distrust from a lot of fans that now remain weary in the direction that Bethesda is taking.

KitGuru Says: I have nothing against the idea of paid mods, as modders should be rewarded for their hard work if they so choose. That being said, it’s all less than upfront so I can understand people’s scepticism. Will you be downloading the No More Creation Club News mod?

The controversy behind paid mods seems to be far from over, with Bethesda bringing back the scheme with its Creation Club. The problem doesn’t stop at a variety of mods costing money, however, as many have reported mod files being downloaded from the scheme without the user’s knowledge.

As the Creation Club builds up its library, Bethesda still faces the scrutiny of not reinforcing its statement that previously free mods would not be eligible to join the paid selection. This is no longer the only problem the publisher is faced with, as users have experienced mods auto-downloading along with a bug-fixing patch.

Rightly, people are annoyed that their bandwidth and storage is being used without consent and even more so for mods which are blocked by a paywall. “You just used MY bandwidth, and MY system and storage for something you are trying to SELL me. All without asking/telling me,” BlueBeer states on the Fallout forums.

I doubt that Bethesda intended this to happen, but whatever the case, the company has issued a statement to reassure fans that it is exploring options to rectify this problem so that it doesn’t recur with each patch to the Creation Club.

“We’re working on solutions that would not require Creation Club archives be part of the game’s patch,” community manager Cartogriffi says. “We are certainly listening to everything people are saying, and appreciate the constructive feedback, both positive and negative.”

On top of this, players are also reporting compatibility issues with the paid Pip-Boy paint jobs and free mods, causing problems to the point that some games are unplayable. This is contrary to Bethesda’s previous statement that compatibility was to be a primary function of the Creation Club, leaving the system lambasted once again.

KitGuru Says: The idea of paid mods is one that most can get behind as who wouldn’t want to reward the hard work of your favourite mod creators. Unfortunately this is still so far from a reality, with consumers suffering in the process. Have you bought into any of the paid mods? What has your experience been like?

Earlier this year, Bethesda announced plans to launch the ‘Creation Club’ for two of its biggest games- Fallout 4 and Skyrim. In essence, this was Bethesda’s second attempt at paid mods but this time around, some much needed changes were in place, the biggest of which was the requirement that no previously free mod could be sold on the Creation Club. Unfortunately, it seems that Bethesda isn’t enforcing this as well as we’d hoped, as the Creation Club just went live for Fallout 4 and things aren’t looking good.

The Fallout 4 Creation Club went live with 12 mods to kick off the launch. Here is the complete list:

  1. Chinese Stealth Armour
  2. Modular Military Backpack
  3. Morgan’s Space Suit from Prey
  4. Pip-Boy Paint Job- Onyx
  5. Pip-Boy Paint Job- Swamp Camo
  6. Pip-Boy Paint Job- Chrome
  7. Power Armor Paint Job- Black
  8. Homemade Shotgun
  9. Prototype Gauss Rifle
  10. Modern Furniture Workshop Pack
  11. Hellfire Power Armor
  12. Power Horse Armor.

So after all of that talk about the Creation Club bringing exclusive content not available elsewhere for free, the first 12 mods on the store are in fact mods you can find elsewhere for free. In fact, the Hellfire Power Armor is one of the top files available on the Fallout 4 Nexus right now.

So the first round of mods aren’t particularly impressive but are the prices at least reasonable? Well no, unfortunately not. When you first join the Creation Club, you get 100 credits for free. For reference, the Hellfire armor costs 500 credits, weapons cost 400 and the paint jobs cost 50. Additional credits are bought in packs, starting at $7.99 for 750 credits. So with ten dollars, you wouldn’t even be able to buy some new armor and a gun.

Hopefully Bethesda will see community comments and make some adjustments but for now, the Creation Club seems like a complete rip off.

KitGuru Says: I’m all for mod creators joining the Creation Club to make some cash, as long as Bethesda sets prices at a reasonable level and ensures compatibility. $10 should get you a hell of a lot more than one weapon and a couple of shaders for your Pip-Boy. In fact, for that kind of cash, I’d expect much bigger/expansive mods and I'm willing to bet many others feel the same.

A few years back, Valve and Bethesda caused quite a stir when they attempted to bring ‘paid mods' to Skyrim. Previously free mods suddenly had a price tag, there was no assurance that paid mods would be compatible with your save game and the overall quality of the first batch was pretty low. Now, Bethesda is trying its hand at additional paid content for its games with the Creation Club but this time around, some much needed changes are in place.

For starters, no previously free mod  for Fallout 4 or Skyrim will be accepted into the Creation Club. Instead, Bethesda's own in-house developers, some third-party developers and only ‘the best' community creators will be making brand new content for this platform. All mods on the Creation Club will be curated and tested for compatibility to ensure that nobody's save game gets corrupted. Anyone that wants to submit content to the Creation Club must first pitch the idea to Bethesda and await approval.

The Creation Club will focus on six primary categories for additional content in Fallout 4 and Skyrim:

  • WEAPONS: New weapons, material skins, parts, etc.
  • APPAREL: New outfits, armor, and items for your character.
  • WORLD: New locations, decorations, foliage, etc.
  • CHARACTERS: New abilities, characters, companions, etc.
  • CREATURES: New enemies, mounts, pets, etc.
  • GAMEPLAY: New types of gameplay like survival mode, etc.

Rather than buying Creation Club add-ons with real money, Bethesda will sell you ‘credits', which you can then use to buy what you want. Bethesda is doing its best to convince us that this isn't the same thing as paid mods and in some ways, it is very different, though the core idea still remains the same. Still, we will need to see the first wave of content and their prices before we can judge Creation Club content on its worth.

KitGuru Says: To me, the quality assurances and curation factors are the two key things that make this different to paid mods on Steam. The fact that an idea needs to be pitched before being accepted is encouraging but how high will Bethesda set the bar? Will the content actually be worth paying for? I don't think many people are going to be very accepting of this until those questions are answered.
