Crytek are a company well known to controversy. When the original Crysis was released, it was illegally downloaded so much that they claimed at the time another Crysis game would never hit the PC. Fast forward a couple of years, and they didn't abandon the PC platform, but ironically due to a sloppy internal leak, early code of the game was circulated by BitTorrent and newsgroups.

When Crysis 2 hit the shelves, the reviews were mixed. Many liked the game, but felt that it was a careless console port with nothing extra for the PC audience. No Direct X 11 code, and nothing to test the capabilities of the latest hardware. Sure, it looked great for a Direct X 9 title, but what about the cutting edge engines for cutting edge computers?

Well, they are listening to the public and have offered a suite of free modding tools to that the user base can create their own maps and modifications, following an announcement on the official Crymod blog page.

Crytek CEO Cevat Yerli said that the user made content had been neglected while the company had concentrated on getting the game released, but that modders would be feeling the benefits of their latest release.

“I wanted to tell you about our plans for supporting you in the future with some really exciting news, which I want to share with you now,” he writes. “Modding with the most powerful game engine is coming back!

“We want to see what you guys can do with CryENGINE 3 and we hope we'll be as amazed with the things you create as we have been over the past few years. This time around, we're going to do things in a different way – offering you the right tools to achieve your vision.”

An editor application is due to be launched in the summer to allow users to tweak the game and build custom levels. The full CryEngine SDK will be released later, in August and will be free to registered users.

This SDK is being supplied with full documentation written by the coders who worked on the game and Crytek says it will offer support to anyone who wants to distribute content they have created commercially.

KitGuru says: Sadly, still no release of Direct X 11 code, but it might be coming soon. maybe.

A few days ago KitGuru ran a story, which originated on Maximum PC. Apparently Crytek were going to be adding a Direct X 11 patch to the PC version of Crysis 2. Be prepared for some bad news, because an official statement on the Crytek forums indicate that this was never going to happen. Eh, Say what?

Thanks to reader grok23 who pointed us to this thread on the official Crytek forums, it appears that someone got their wires crossed somewhere along the line. The site is slow right now so here is the statement from a Crytek employee.

German ‘Cry-Tom' says ‘No patch was ever confirmed, I have no idea why this website (MaximumPC) even posted such information. This thread is locked just the same as the others for trying to spread inaccurate information. When there are any big announcements regarding Crysis 2 they will be posted on MyCrysis, if you read something about a patch for example, but don't see it on MyCrysis.com, then it isn't genuine.'

We can only imagine hordes of PC gamers who have just invested in a GTX580 or GTX590 crying into their cornflakes at the news breaking now. We have no information as to how, or where this “Crysis 2 Direct X 11 patch is coming” was sourced from, but Maximum PC are a reputable American publication who aren't likely to make it up.

Maximum PC said: “If you were looking for a DirectX 11 killer app this just might be it. You can call it a console port if you like, but this latest update will ensure Crysis 2 will be making PC’s across the globe groan for years to come.”

Sadly not, but at least the game is actually really good, even if looks like the PS3 version.

Have Crytek got a Direct X 11 patch planned for the future? Lets hope so.

KitGuru says: Many gamers feel that Crytek really should have spent some time making a PC specific version incorporating new technology. Is Direct X 9 here to stay? The way the PC gaming scene is going, it seems it still has some life in it yet. What is the point in spending £500-£600 on a top of the line video card?

According to online rumours, Crysis 2 will be getting a Direct X 11 patch sometime today on the PC. This patch will unlock an advanced graphics menu in the game. This will be a relief to many gamers who are complaining that the PC version of the game is a shoddy console port.

To be fair, we think what they have achieved in DX9 is rather incredible, but gamers don't buy GTX590's or HD 6990's to not play the latest games with tessellation and full Direct X 11 support.

Will this update transform the game into a worthwhile benchmarking tool? Keep your eyes posted today for the patch, which could be a rather large download depending on what exactly Crytek change.
