If you are an Android user, then chances are you have probably heard of the Cyanogenmod ROM. Over the last couple of years, Cyanogen has branched out and become a legitimate company, launching its own operating system and now it is even signing deals with Microsoft.

Rumours of a partnership between the two companies has been hinted at in the past but it is now confirmed. It has been suggested in the past that Microsoft has invested as much as $70 million in the startup, in order to help it free Android from Google's clutches a little bit.

While the deal is confirmed, no exact figures have been officially revealed. The deal does mean that Cyanogen OS will start packing in some Microsoft apps, including Bing, Skype, OneDrive, OneNote, Outlook, and Microsoft Office.

Microsoft will also be working on “native integrations” for Cyanogen OS.Kirt McMaster, CEO of Cyanogen said: “This exciting partnership with Microsoft will enable us to bring new kinds of integrated services to mobile users in markets around the world.”

Microsoft had some words of its own: “We aspire to have our tools within arm's reach of everyone, to empower them in all aspects of their lives.”

KitGuru Says: Cyanogen has quickly grown from a group of Android modders in to a full company with the capacity to make big deals with the likes of Microsoft. What do you guys think of this? Right now it doesn't look like this deal pertains to the Cyanogenmod ROM but rather the full OS found on the OnePlus One.

The OnePlus One became a huge success when it launched last year with flagship level specifications at a much lower price. However, aside from a couple of one off events, people looking to buy one needed an invite. Fortunately, this isn't the case anymore.

You can now buy a OnePlus One smartphone without an invite, although you can only pick one up on Tuesdays. The Chinese firm made the announcement over on its blog, stating that: “We will open up sales for 24 hours, starting at 8am London time (midnight in Los Angeles; 4pm in Hong Kong).”

Both the 16GB and 64GB versions will be available for £229 and £269 respectively. There is no micro SD card slot on the OnePlus One so kicking up the little bit of extra cash for the 64GB model sounds like a good idea.

While this is good news, we are expecting the OnePlus Two to launch some time over the next few months. Other device makers like Samsung, HTC and LG are all also expected to launch new flagship phones fairly soon, although these will all likely be much more expensive.

You may have heard that OnePlus and Cyanogen had a bit of a falling out recently and as a result, the OnePlus Two will not use CyanogenMod OS but rather, a home-made operating system called OxygenOS.

We now have our first look at what the OxygenOS will look like thanks to GizmoChina, which has managed to obtain images of the Android based operating system in action:

OxygenOS 2 OxygenOS

Assuming that these images are in-fact legitimate, then it looks like the OxygenOS will follow in Android 5.0's footsteps with a new colourful ‘flat', clean design.

Apps appear to be sorted in to different categories, with Games and Tools being put into different sections of the screen. GizmoChina also has several variations of lock screen, the first of which you can see above.

So far, OnePlus seems to be doing alright on its own with the stylish design, although this gives no indication of performance.

The OxygenOS will likely make its debut with the launch of the OnePlus Two, which may have been delayed due to problems with the Snapdragon 810 chip.

KitGuru Says: The OnePlus One was originally known as the Cyanogenmod phone. Since then, OnePlus has gone on to form its own following so it will be interesting to see how people respond to the OnePlus Two without Cyanogenmod. What do you guys think of the look of OxygenOS so far? Do you think ditching Cyanogen was the right move?

If you have been looking to buy the OnePlus One smartphone then this is the week to get your foot in the door as OnePlus has opened the flood gates to allow purchases without an invite for the next three days.

The OnePlus One can be tricky to get a hold of, there is a slow spreading invite system but the best way to guarantee yourself a handset is to get in on the often short and rare public pre-order windows. However, for the next three days, buyers can purchase either a 16GB or 64GB white handset or a black one for $299/£229 or $349/£269 respectively.

For those of you who don't know the specifications, the OnePlus One uses a 5.5 Inch 1080p display, 3GB of RAM, 13 megapixel rear camera and a Snapdragon 901 CPU powered by the CyanogenMod version of Android.

These specifications rival many flagship devices but comes down to a fraction of the usual cost. The phone only ships to 16 countries world wide though, including the UK and US.

KitGuru Says: The OnePlus One is a very good phone for the price. However, the company has been known to take their time when it comes to shipping out devices due to limited manufacturing resources so do be aware of that if you plan to order one. Do any of you guys own a OnePlus One? What do you think of it?

CyanogenMod has just surpassed the 10 million user mark, further proving that Android users want the barebones operating system, free of ugly skins coupled with fast updates. The custom rom has certainly set itself out from the crowd too, with its over the air updates as well nightly and stable install options.

CyanogenMod has actually got so popular that it can now directly content with Android itself as CM has partnered up with phone maker, Oppo, to bring the Oppo N1 with the custom ROM pre-installed. To top it off, Google has even given the phone its blessing as the phone had passed the compatibility test suite meaning it will officially get the Google Play store support as well as all of the official Google apps. The CM equipped Oppo N1 will release on the 24th of December incase you need a last minute christmas present.

For those users looking for a stock Android experience, Nexus, Google Play editions and to some extent, Motorola devices aren't the only phone's to be looking at anymore. We'll likely see more CM supported phones come to market after the Oppo N1.

KitGuru Says: The CyanogenMod team has certainly worked hard for its popularity, it provides old and abandoned phones with updates as well as keeping all popular non-Nexus devices up to date with Android's yearly updates. The Oppo N1 isn't a bad phone either.

CyanogenMod's easy installer only just launched on the Play Store three weeks ago but it seems the custom rom was violating some terms of service issues and has now been kicked off of the Google Play Store.

Google contacted the CyanogenMod developers to tell them that the app needed to go and if the devs didn't pull it, Google would “be forced to remove it administratively.” CyanogenMod did contact Google after pulling the app and were told that the app itself was harmless but it couldn't stay as it encourages people to void their warranties by flashing third party software and making use of bootloaders.

So there's no easy installer in the Play Store for now, though the dev team will try and find a way around Google's terms of service and have another crack at it eventually. That said, all hope is not lost if you don't mind downloading the app directly from CyanogenMod's website.

CyanogenMod currently has 8 million users and during the easy installer's short stay on the Play Store if gathered up hundreds of thousands of downloads. There is definitely a market out there for the CyanogenMod experience and more importantly, there's a market for choice when it comes to Android phones.

Kitguru Says: It's a shame the easy installer got pulled from the play store, as this could be another sign of Google clamping down on Android. That said,  it's easy enough to download and install the .APK right on your phone.

Cyanogenmod, one of the most popular custom roms for Android users looking for a more stock experience, has raised $7 million to release it's own version of the operating system in a bid to become the third most used mobile OS.

With 8 million registered users already its off to a good start and the software creators have also bagged a partnership with a secret hardware manufacturer to bring out a phone running Cyanogenmod. We probably won't be able to call it a mod for much longer, but the company does have plans to re brand.

cyanogenmod

The growth rate of this rom is surprising, simply because it takes a lot of effort to install. This is set to change however,  as the developers aim to bring out an easy two step installer and put it right in the play store. If more custom roms did this then maybe we would see more stock Android and less ‘touchwiz' and ‘sense'. The fact that this rom is so popular goes to show how strong a demand there is out there for a more stock Android experience. This is probably what led to the new Google play editions of popular Android smartphones, the only problem is the updates still don't arrive at the same time as a Nexus device.

Cyanogenmod has its own OTA update method which is unique, you won't find another custom rom that offers that. This makes updating after going through the long initial installation process much easier and very simple.

However, there are two things that could potentially hold back this project: Google and the carriers. Carriers prefer a much more controllable closed platform where they can shut certain things off, monitor usage and limit access. Google itself would have to certify a Cyanogen made phone or OS for Playstore access and for Google services. If there aren't any carriers on board then the phone will have to be bought off contract which could make it pretty expensive. In the long run though, buying a phone off contract and going pay as you go is cheaper.

KitGuru Says: I personally use Cyanogenmod on my galaxy S3. I prefer the stock Android look and features, even if  it does hit the battery quite hard. I'm keen to see what the future holds and find out which hardware manufacturer it's chosen to partner with. Are you interested in a Cyanogen phone?
