While the concept of ‘The Cloud' is great, we often need to move big data around quickly – or we need access when the 3G/WiFi is dire. In those cases, anyone who carries their important data on a slimline, portable drive is gonna have a superior grin on their face. In a highly competitive market, how much are you prepared to pay for that kind of facility?  KitGuru fills its top pocket.

KitGuru was at a meeting last week.

We brought along our trust iPad with 3G and as soon as we put it down on the pub's outdoor table – we were ready to go.

One of the people we were meeting brought along the kind of flight case that you might use for a short holiday and proceeded to unpack a full size (17″) laptop and look around for anywhere they could plug an external hard drive into.

The 3rd person had a relatively slimline laptop and a ‘passport' type USB 3 drive which draws its power from the computer.

While KitGuru was able to exude a certain amount of smugness at how little we'd brought to the table and commiserated with the poor chap who had a bag of bricks, the idea of an Ultrabook with slimline 1TB external is actually quite cool. It offers a serious amount of storage and processing in a neat/nimble bag that you can throw casually over the shoulder.

It is this 3rd chap – lightweight tech man – that ADATA is aiming the HV620 external drive at.

It comes in 500GB and 1TB flavours with UK pricing expected to be around £49 for the smaller drive and £65 for the larger, so pricing is competitive with the likes of WD etc.

Apart from the USB 3 connectivity and no need for a power cable, ADATA is selling this drive on 3 key features:-

  1. Scratch Prevention Design
The edge of the device has a slight lip all around, which prevents the surface from scratching
  2. Sleek and Glossy
Which will appeal to us geeks, apparently
  3. LED Transfer Indicator
So you know when a data transfer is in progress and don't remove the drive at the wrong moment

Historically, ADATA is more famous for supplying memory to other companies. They are rumoured to have made almost all of the Sony memory modules (DUOs etc) and many of the world's Asus products are also running on ADATA memory.
The company appears to be trying to win the hearts & minds in the channel for 2013/14 – using products like the HV620 – let's see how that goes.

The win here will be price. If you can find it in stores at the right price, then that will be a bonus.

.
KitGuru says: If ADATA manages to land products in UK stores at this kind of price, then they can expect a nice little sales kick. The danger will be if the price is too close to WD and other competitors with a more established name/channel.

Following hot on the heals of the AE400, ADATA has taken the opportunity to present the brand new DashDrive Air AE800 to new retail customers at the Distree event in Monte Carlo. It offers some cool new features, but will the channel fall in love with this new portable drive? KitGuru operatives were on hand to snap and savour.

The major technology event known as Distree happens every year down in Monaco. It brings together resellers (the people you and KitGuru buy technology from) with the distributors (who sell to the resellers) and the vendors (the people who actually make the cool stuff in the first place). If you have a product that costs less than £200, then this is a pretty good place to show it off.

On the ADATA stand, we managed to catch up with Melanie Grunewald and Jordi Carbo, who run various the Central European and Iberian regions respectively.

We were keen to know what makes the DashDrive Air AE800 so different to the AE400. Here's a concise run through:-

  • The AE800 includes a 500GB drive – perfect for media streaming
  • It includes a 5100mAh batttery, which means the device can be used on the move
  • The drive is set up like a Sky box, in that you can be accessing data on the drive while it simultaneously streams to someone else on your network
  • Speaking about networks, the hotspot it creates can support up to 8 devices – perfect if you decide to holiday with friends or family and want to watch something together in transit
  • It has support for iOS and Android applications – so mobile users are well catered for (sorry Blackberry)

And, at just 290 grams, it is definitely portable.

Shipments of the AE400 are due into the UK in time for the CeBIT show over in Hannover in March. The AE800 will follow in behind.

Melanie is very pleased with all the storing and streaming.

KitGuru says: With 4G data plans likely to be aimed at the ‘low/single digit gigabytes a month', it will be quite a while before we can regularly stream films etc cheaply on the move. In that kind of situation, you need a storage medium, network and control software. ADATA seems to have the bundle right – can they do the same with the price? We'll go out on a limb and say that, if ADATA delivers on the promise, then ‘sub £100' should do the trick.

As the number of devices which include memory sticks, of one form or another, increase across the planet – we're all faced with the issue of ‘How do we move the data to the data processing device?'.  With the launch of its DashDrive Air AV200, ADATA believes it has a solution that we'll find appealing. KitGuru fires up the router to check.

We're familiar with the idea of a card reader. Whether you use a small bay on the front of your PC to mount a one of these useful devices or use an external one, you're still faced with one fundamental problem.

The data is going to be ingested onto the PC with the card reader.

ADATA has been looking at this problem and, it hopes, has provided a solution with the DashDrive Air AV200. This tiny unit has all of the memory card slots that you would hope to find, but no wires attached. Instead, in sits on a network – like a NAS box with no fixed drives.

In fact, the electronics installed in the DashDrive Air AV200 mean that it can create a mini-network of its own – supporting up to 5 devices.

It's an agnostic little device as well – not bothered about your religious beliefs – so you can attached with Windows, OS X, iOS and Android.

For us, the most interesting part of the product is the price. It's likely to be just over £40 in the UK – which considering its feature set is quite cool.

Measuring 60 x 50 x 25mm, the ADATA DashDrive Air AV200 provides 802.11 b/g/n wireless networking for up to 5 devices. Nice.

KitGuru says: Ahead of testing, we can't comment on what it would be like to try and move gigabytes of video data around your house using a small wireless hub like this, but the idea that there could be a ‘central point' for everyone in the house to grab shots off their cameras etc is very appealing.

While capacities have been increasing consistently for as long as there have been hard drives around, the actual physical size changes very little over time. ADATA is now looking to change that for the mobile market place with the arrival of the HE720.

This drive uses a USB3 interface and will start with a modest capacity of just 500GB. Given that it is less than 9mm thick, that's not bad going.

It is delivered in a stylish brushed metal casing and, to ensure that it carries on looking that good, the material has been hardened to a significant level (apparently known as 9H – which we'd normally associate with glass).

While regular hard drives can't possibly compete with SSDs inside a PC or laptop, when it comes to external storage, the overall capacity is more important. On that basis, paying around £60 inc vat for a 500GB drive will compare nicely to the 60-120GB drive that the same money would buy in slimline SSD terms.

Cool looking, affordable and - at 500GB - as big as the largest SSDs around

KitGuru says: Handy little number with a cool look and serious capacity. Will be interesting to see if they can push toward a 1TB drive – which is a capacity that SSDs are unlikely to reach in bulk for a couple of years to come.
