Today we go hands on with Intel's Optane SSD DC P4800X enterprise-class NVMe drive that uses Intel's 3D XPoint memory technology designed for use in data centres. It's only available in two capacities, 350GB and 750GB, and two formats – a 2.5in 15mm U.2 drive, and a HHHL AIC. For this review we are looking at the 750GB U.2 version.

Loaded with Intel's 3D XPoint memory together with a 7-channel controller, the official quoted Sequential performance figures for the 750GB drive are up to 2,500MB/s for reads and up to 2,200MB/s for writes. The 350GB drive has reads of up to 2,400MB/s with writes up to 2,000MB/s

Random 4K figures are up to 555,000 IOPS for both reads and writes (these figures are for 100% span tests). The 350GB drive has the same read figure but with up to 500,000 writes.

Intel quotes an active power rating for the 750GB P4800X of 18W, and 6W when idling.

Needless to say, a drive aimed at data centres needs some pretty cast iron endurance figures and the P4800X doesn't disappoint. It's rated at 30DWDP, which works out to around 41PBW (yes that's petabytes) over the length of the 5-year warranty Intel backs the drive with.

Intel's SSD DC P4510 family of drives have been designed to support a wide range of cloud workloads in the enterprise environment. The drives use Intel's 64-layer TLC 3D NAND technology, the first Intel drive series in the enterprise space to do so. This enables larger capacities to be brought to the table in the 2.5in format than the previous generation 32-layer equipped DC P4500 series.

Intel's P4510 family of drives consists of four capacities; 1TB, 2TB, 4TB and the flagship 8TB model which is the one Intel kindly provided to us for review. Built on a 15mm 2.5in format the drives use a U.2 (PCIe 3.1 x4, NVMe 1.2) interface and Intel's 2nd generation NVMe SSD controller, which was also at the heart of the P45** and P46** family of drives.

Official Sequential performance figures for the 8TB drive are up to 3,200MB/s for reads and up to 3,000 MB/s for writes. Incidentally the 2TB drive has the same figure for Sequential reads as the 8TB drive but the 4TB drive is rated slightly less at 3,000MB/s. The 1TB drive gets a rating of up to 2,850MB/s. Sequential writes for the other drives in the family are; 2,900MB/s for the 4TB drive, 2,000MB/s for the 2TB unit and 1,100MB/s for the 1TB drive.

Random 4K performance for the 8TB drive is quoted at up to 637,000 IOPS for reads and up to 139,000 IOPS for writes. Random performance for the rest of the line-up is; 4TB, 625,000 IOPS reads and 113,500 IOPS writes, 637,000 IOPS and 81,500 IOPS for the 2TB drive and 465,000 IOPS and 70,000 IOPS for the 1TB unit.

Intel rate the endurance of the 8TB drive at up to 13.88PBW and back the drive with a 5 year warranty.

Kingston's DCP1000 SSD sits under the companies Enterprise banner and has been designed for extreme performance in the flash-based data centre environment. When Kingston say extreme performance, they're not joking; this is a drive capable of delivering reads at close to 7GB/s and writes up to 6GB/s!

Developed in cooperation with Liqid Inc, masters of designing data centre architecture with Kingston providing the hardware and Ligid in charge of the firmware, the DCP1000 comes in three capacities; 800GB. 1.6TB (the drive submitted for review) and the flagship 3.2TB drive.

The quoted performance figures for the drive are absolutely crazy! The 1.6TB drive has Sequential read/write figures of 6,800MB/s and 6,000MB/s respectively, the 3.2TB and 800GB drives have the same read speed with the write speed of the 3.2TB drive the same as the 1.6TB drive while the 800GB drive writes fall back to 5,000MB/s.

Random read/write figures are mind boggling. The 1.6TB drive is rated up to 1.1m, yes that's 1.1 million IOPS for reads with writes at 200,000 IOPS. The flagship 3.2TB drive is slightly slower at 1m IOPS for reads and 180,000 IOPS for writes while the 800GB drive only manages 900,000 IOPS for reads and 145,000 IOPS for writes.

At the heart of the drive are four Kingston M.2 NVMe SSD's each with, in the case of the 1.6TB drive, 400GB of capacity. Each of the drives uses a PhisonPS5007-11 eight-channel controller along with eight packages of Toshiba 15nm MLC NAND. A PLX PEX8725 24-lane PCIe Gen 3 switch sits between the drives and the PCIe 3.0 x8 board connector.

The drives can be used in a number of ways including RAID arrays and the drive is also bootable. Kingston provide endurance figures the drive as a whole and for the individual drives. Stated endurance for the 1.6TB drive as a whole is 1820TB TBW with each of the 400GB drives rated at 375TB TBW.

Kingston back the drive with a 5 year warranty.

Apple has announced that it plans to spend €1.7 Billion constructing two new data centers in Europe, which will run entirely on renewable energy and provide key online services such as iMessage, Siri and iTunes. One of the two centers will be located in Ireland while the other will be found in Denmark.

Both data centers are currently expected to be up and running by 2017. Apple CEO, Tim Cook, commented on the company's new European investment, saying “We are grateful for Apple’s continued success in Europe and proud that our investment supports communities across the continent. This significant new investment represents Apple’s biggest project in Europe to date. We’re thrilled to be expanding our operations, creating hundreds of local jobs and introducing some of our most advanced green building designs yet.”

The data center being built-in Denmark will be Apple's first in the country, each new center will measure 166,000 square meters, which Apple promises will deliver benefits to local communities. The Ireland location will have an outdoor education space and walking trails for local schools, Apple will also be replanting native trees in surrounding areas. In Denmark, local homes will be warmed by the extra heat produced by the servers.

This move bolsters Apple's commitment to renewable energy and preserving the environment.

Apple is planning to spend around $2 billion to turn its failed Sapphire production plant in to a global data center. The site, which is located in Arizona, was originally supposed to be used to create Sapphire displays for the latest iPhone 6 and 6 Plus, although things changed before launch.

Speaking with Bloomberg an Apple representative said that the site will now “serve as a command center for our global networks.” The 1.3 million square-foot building will be powered entirely by renewable energy in an effort to keep things green, and is expected to create 150 full-time jobs along with 300 to 500 construction and trade jobs.

The Sapphire production plant was originally due to create two thousand jobs, although Apple is still calling this “one of the largest investments we've ever made”.

The plant was initially built for GT Advanced Technologies, who Apple paid to start building furnaces to churn out a significant amount of Sapphire. The plant would have played a big role in Apple's supply chain, unfortunately, it turned out that GT Advanced Technologies couldn't actually make that much usable Sapphire and ended up going bankrupt.

Fortunately for Apple, it has been able to re-purpose the site and make the most out of a bad situation.

KitGuru Says: While a Sapphire plant would have created many more jobs in the US, Apple's ‘Plan B' for the site is still pretty solid.
