We only just saw Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War 3 launch at the end of April last year. Unfortunately since then, the game suffered to really capture a player base and a quick look at the Steam reviews will show that many Warhammer 40K fans have problems with the game. This has had an effect on the team at Relic, who are now throwing in the towel and moving on from the game completely.

Originally, the folks at Relic wanted to expand Dawn of War 3 with new campaign content,  races and factions. However, the diminishing number of players has forced the studio to shift its focus and move on to other projects. In a statement sent to Eurogamer today, the studio said explained that “while Dawn of War 3 has a dedicated player base, it didn't hit the targets we were expecting at launch, and it hasn't performed the way we had hoped since”.

“When a game underperforms, plans need to change. With Dawn of War 3, we simply don't have the foundation we need to produce major content. We're working in close partnership with Sega and Games Workshop to determine the best course of action, while shifting focus to other projects within our portfolio.”

While Dawn of War 3 may not have turned out to be the hit that Relic had hoped for, the studio has several other projects currently in the works. This includes handling Age of Empires 4 for Microsoft, in addition to another ‘unannounced project'.

KitGuru Says: I skipped over Dawn of War 3 last year due to the mixed reception it received. Did any of you pick the game up last year? Do you think Relic is making the right move by ditching future content plans, or do you think the game could be saved with some extra work?

If you happen to be a Warhammer 40K fan, then you are probably looking forward to the release of Dawn of War III later this week. As with any huge game launch, this also means GPU driver updates. We've already had a chance to look at Nvidia's latest ‘Game Ready' update and today, AMD began pushing out its latest Crimson ReLive driver, promising performance boosts and improved HDR while stealth-dropping a Quake Champions link on your desktop.

Here are the improvements the new version of Radeon Software offers:

Up to 7% performance improvement measured on Radeon RX 580 8GB graphics when compared to Radeon Software Crimson ReLive edition 17.4.3.
Improve Multi-GPU stuttering in Battlefield 1 with a 4K Display.
Removes corruption caused by HDMI scaling on some displays.
HDR colours should be improved within Mass Effect: Andromeda.

Now driver 17.4.4 will also add a tracked bit.ly shortcut link to your desktop for Quake Champions, Bethesda/id Software's upcoming hero shooter. The link takes you to the beta sign up page for the game. Advertisements within drivers aren't particularly uncommon and have appeared in the past, though it is rare to find beta sign-up links on your desktop after installing a driver update.

If you were wondering why there is a Quake Champions shortcut suddenly sitting on your desktop, then that would be why. There appears to be some cross-promotion between AMD and Bethesda at the moment, which will also extend to performance enhancements for Ryzen CPU users in future games, likely including Quake Champions.

KitGuru Says: I'm not too bothered by the Quake Champions link myself, especially since it only takes me a second to drag it into the recycling bin. Still, some may see it as an intrusive step, while others might just be confused as to how Quake Champions appeared on their PC.

April might be quieter on blockbuster releases but there are still quite a few interesting games coming out. Dawn of War 3 is launching, Batman: Arkham VR is finally landing on PC, meanwhile games like Rick and Morty: Virtual Rick-ality and Wilson's Heart flesh out April's offerings. As with most PC game launches, this also means that it is time for GPU driver updates, with Nvidia today rolling out its latest Game Ready driver.

The latest Game Ready driver will prepare GeForce graphics card users for the upcoming Heroes of the Storm 2.0 update, was well as the launch of Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War 3. For virtual reality fans, this should stabilise performance in Batman: Arkham VR, Wilson's Heart and the Rick and Morty game.

Driver version 381.89 is WHQL certified and should be readily available via the GeForce Experience app. Importantly, the additional optimisation for Heroes of the Storm shows Nvidia's willingness to revisit and continuously support online games when major updates land, ensuring support for the long-term.

Aside from this driver update, earlier today Nvidia also announced that it would be bundling three VR games with its GPUs, including the highly rated SUPERHOT VR, Wilson's Heart and The Unspoken.

KitGuru Says: If you are planning on picking up Dawn of War 3 this week, then make sure you grab the latest drivers for peak performance.

Following the big trailer reveal and announcement of Dawn of War III yesterday, more details have emerged from various quarters, including those who were lucky enough to get a look at an extended demo at Relic's HQ. They've revealed that DoW3 will have a single player campaign that has you playing as all races shown in the trailer: Eldar, Orks and Space Marines.

While this sounds similar to what Dawn of War II's Retribution expansion did, offering unique campaigns for each race, this is more like a team effort for a single campaign run. Players will take on the role of the respective armies as they transition from one level to another, giving different perspectives on the story, as all of them battle out to retrieve a mysterious and powerful weapon.

Each race has tiered units as before, as well as unique units, heroes and super soldiers that can really turn the tide of battle. The scale is also spread wider, allowing for Titan-sized combat between armies.

Dawn of War 1 scale battles are back, according to PC Gamer, but they will be augmented with the special heroes of the second game, allowing them to inspire their fellow troops and help turn the tide of battle. Relic also hopes that those epic brawls will be easier for newer players to read, making the game more accessible despite the scale.

That might mean sacrificing some of those sweet kill animations though.

Base building returns in the new game, with players forced to build power generators and to capture requisition points to generate resources, though whether individual buildings for upgrades and new units will need to be constructed is unknown.

Customisation will happen before a battle too, with each combatant selecting a trio of elite units to take with them into battle. Relic has said that it is testing a MOBA-like draft-pick system, but it remains to be seen if that will be implemented in the final game.

Super weapons will also feature, though not all have been detailed. Space Marines can call down an orbital laser attack. Here's hoping for a foot of Gork for the orks.

Finally the game will have a new cover system we're told. Units can capture it to gain an advantage against ranged units, but are weak to close combat attacks from assault troops.

KitGuru Says: All in all Dawn of War 3 sounds like an interesting blend of the original and its sequel, though I worry about the simplification to give it a more mainstream appeal. Do you think that will remove some of the strategy from the game?

Update: Relic was indeed planning on announcing a third Dawn of War title today and it's debuted a new trailer alongside it.

[yframe url='http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N_ZgyNoHtjw']

The trailer showcases Space Marines, Orks and Eldar, brawling it out on a minute, man-to-man scale and a much grander one with Titan-size mechs.

Original story: Even though the potential announcement of a new Warhammer 40,000 game might not seem like something to get excited about, afterall, they are a dime a dozen these days, Dawn of War 3 would still be something to get pumped for. That might be what Relic has been teasing for the last few days too and we're set to find out at 3PM (BST) this afternoon.

Although we don't have a lot of evidence to back up this finger crossing, we do have some. Relic Games, the developer of both Dawn of War, its expansions and sequel, recently released a new update for Dawn of War 2's Last Stand mode, adding a Necron Overlord to the mix. This could have been it revving up the hype engine for the Dawn of War universe.

As PCGamesN points out too, Sega doesn't have much lined up for the latter half of this year, so the announcement of a big sequel for an epic strategy title would be a good way to round out the end of the year. It's also been funding Dawn of War II: Retribution stands/booths at events like the PC Gamer Weekender, which seems surprising for a game that was released over five years ago.

The biggest news we have on this topic though, is that Relic has promised some sort of announcement later today. It tweeted out an image of some desolate looking mountains and promised to announce something at 3PM British Summer Time, on the 3rd May.

It could be another piece of DLC for Dawn of War II, just a new environment or another character. But a lot of people are hoping it's Dawn of War III. Indeed picking 3rd May, at 3PM to make a Dawn of War announcement would be a pretty hard troll if it wasn't related to a third title in the series.

Although Games Workshop seems to have finally cottoned on to the fact that it's sitting on a goldmine of nostalgic and competitive gaming IPs, announcing more projects in the past six months than it has in the past decade, its flagship Warhammer 40k product of a few years ago, Dawn of War, hasn't had much love in a while. However, perhaps that series is set for a rebirth in the future, as Sega, the publisher that purchased the IP and its developer in the shutdown of THQ, has now registered a Dawnofwar3 domain name.

This could of course be a company simply making sure it retains the option to effectively market the game, should it ever decide to make it. Indeed, as PCG points out, the domain has been owned and registered since 2008, but in the past few weeks it's been updated twice. One of those updates will certainly get tongues wagging, since the registrant email now points to Relic Entertainment's IT department.

Who wouldn't want to see this guy make a return?

In recent years, with its new Sega overlords, Relic has been working on the Company of Heroes sequel and its various expansions. However, when initially purchased during the THQ property auction in 2012, it did state that another Dawn of War game was a distinct possibility.

The question is at this point, how far along is the new game if indeed it's already in development?

KitGuru Says: I'd like to see another Dawn of War game, though I'm not sure which style I'd prefer. The original had a lot of traditional base building RTS elements, whereas the second felt a little more like the tabletop experience, helping you focus purely on combat and positioning.
