Motion Twin, the developers behind the popular rogue-lite Metroidvania game Dead Cells, have announced that the upcoming Update 35 will be the last major content release for the game. The update titled ‘The End Is Near' is still in the alpha stage, but the team is working hard to get it ready for release as soon as possible.

Over seven years, Dead Cells has received four major DLC expansions, a mobile release, and 35 title updates. However, the current developer, Evil Empire, has decided to move on to other projects. The studio hinted at “secret projects” in the works, and fans are eagerly awaiting to see more of those.

As per the developer, “avoiding the ‘more of the same' trap and keeping Dead Cells fresh and original has led [them] to this point”. Like with other long-running games, overextending can negatively affect a game as it becomes repetitive and risks diminishing what makes it unique. Motion Twin has assured fans that they will continue to find solutions for long-term bug fixes and quality-of-life concerns after the release of Update 35. The team is also working on their next action-roguelike game, Windblown, announced during last year's Game Awards.

There have been speculations that Evil Empire's Return To Castlevania DLC was a dry run for a full-fledged Castlevania game with Konami. However, what the team has in store for their fans remains to be seen.

Dead Cells may have initially launched all the way back in 2018, but the rogue-lite metroidvania-inspired action platformer featuring fast and frantic combat (alongside a near endless number of unique weapons) has only gone from strength to strength with each new update and piece of DLC. following the reveal that the game has officially sold over 10 million copies, a Dead Cells animated series has now been announced.

Releasing a brief teaser trailer, the team at Motion Twin officially announced Dead Cells – The Animated Series, saying “We are stoked to announce that after years of requests, an animated Dead Cells series IS DROPPING IN 2024!”

Being developed by Bobbypills (who has been in charge of all of Dead Cells’ previous animated trailers), the show is set on “a cursed island that has been racked by a strange plague” where “After the island’s foolish king develops a remedy that ends up turning the population into monstrous creatures, prophecies depicting a flame-headed hero who will kill the crazy King begin to appear.”

Offering additional information on the series itself, the team confirmed that the Dead Cells animated show will consist of 10 “roughly seven-minute long episodes” which “will initially be exclusive to France before being made available worldwide.”

Seeing the journey Motion Twin and Dead Cells has taken over these years has been highly encouraging and so hopefully the animated series winds up being just as good as the game itself.

Following the release of the Return to Castlevania crossover, the team have revealed that Dead Cells has now sold over 10 million copies.

Making the 10 million sales figure announcement via a press release, the team at Motion Twin said “The consecutive launch of the 1.0 version on PC & consoles in 2018, a whopping 34 free updates and later launches on mobile have all helped to drive long-tail success in all major global territories, pushing the game into rarely charted sales territory for an independent title.”

10 million copies for any title is a huge achievement, let alone for an indie game. This long-term support from fans is being equally rewarded by the developers as they have now confirmed that Dead Cells will see continuous updates until at least 2025 – 8 years after its initial release.

Dead Cells is an excellent title and if you haven yet to try it then now is as good a time as any to do so.

Dead Cells may have initially launched all the way back in 2018, but the rogue-lite metroidvania-inspired action platformer featuring fast and frantic combat (alongside a near endless number of unique weapons) has only gone from strength to strength with each new update and piece of DLC. Following the release of the Return to Castlevania crossover, it seems Dead Cells is set to get a bespoke PS5 version – as well as a physical release,

As discovered by Gematsu, Dead Cells: Return to Castlevania Edition has been spotted on the ESRB’s (Entertainment Software Ratings Board) website with the available platforms listed as ‘PlayStation 5’ – suggesting not only that a current-gen version of the title is in the works, but that Dead Cells is set to also get a physical release.

While it is clear based on the name that this release will be bundled with the Return to Castlevania DLC, it is unknown whether the game’s other DLC packs will be included – though considering the game is getting a physical release we can only hope that it does indeed offer the complete package.

Though certainly not the most graphically demanding game, a PS5 release of Dead Cells could introduce a number of improvements such as 120fps, higher resolutions and could even take advantage of the DualSense’s advanced haptics for even more satisfying gameplay. We will have to wait and see, but regardless, the fact that this indie title is getting a physical release is certainly exciting in-and-of-itself.

Dead Cells is no stranger to crossovers. That said, many fans were left both surprised and excited by the announcement that the rogue-lite metroidvania would be getting Castlevania DLC. With the Return to Castlevania crossover now live, Konami has officially addressed the future of the classic franchise.

In an interview conducted by IGN, Konami executive Tsuromu Taniguchi spoke on what this DLC could mean for the future of the long-dormant Castlevania franchise, saying “We know that our fans always want more,” and that the “excitement and enthusiasm of the fans online [is] really motivating for [Konami].”

Speaking on some of their recent efforts, Taniguchi said “We tried to bring back the games that people loved and cherished with the Castlevania Anniversary Collection and the Castlevania Advance Collection, we also brought back Rondo of Blood and Symphony of the Night for our PlayStation fans and on mobile, and launched Grimoire of Souls on Apple Arcade to celebrate the lore of the franchise.”

Looking to the future though, they continued, “But we know that our fans always want more, and we do too, so this opportunity to have this amazing crossover with Dead Cells was impossible to pass up on.”

Castlevania remains one of Konami’s most well-loved franchises and while the publisher still seems somewhat apprehensive to dive back into major video game development, hopefully the early success of the Return to Castlevania DLC shows just how much fans want a proper new game in the series.

One of last year's biggest surprise announcements came from none other than Dead Cells developer, Motion Twin, with the studio securing the Castlevania IP to produce a new expansion for the game. Now just a few months on from the announcement, we have a March release date.

Dead Cells: Return to Castlevania will be launching for PC and consoles on the 6th of March. The DLC brings two new Castlevania-inspired areas to the game. Players can also expect to run into enemies from the Castlevania series, including three new boss fights, headlined by none other than Dracula himself.

Aside from new levels, enemies and bosses, the DLC also adds Castlevania weapons to the game, and Castlevania music is also being added to the soundtrack. In all, Dead Cells: Return to Castlevania should please long-time fans of Konami's series.

The DLC won't be too expensive either, coming in at $9.99 on PC, Switch, Xbox and PlayStation.

Released all the way back in 2018, Dead Cells is a rogue-lite metroidvania-inspired action platformer featuring fast and frantic combat alongside a near endless number of unique weapons. Since its release, the game has received consistent content updates, with the latest patch seeing multiple new weapons, skills and skins added based on a whole host of popular indie franchises.

This time last year, the team at Motion Twin announced its ‘Everyone is Here update’ for Dead Cells, in which new weapons, skills and even skins were added for free based on the indie games Hollow Knight; Hyper Light Drifter; Blasphemous; Guacamelee; Skul: The Hero Slayer and Curse of the Dead Gods.

Now, the team has announced even more characters joining the game, with the devs saying “We're back with another indie crossover update – Everyone is Here Vol. II! We've added more weapons, skills and skins from our favourite indie games, so thanks to all the studios that let us add a piece of their creations to Dead Cells.”

With that, the list of additional games which are crossing over with Dead Cells is as follows:

 • Terraria
 • Shovel Knight
 • Hotline Miami
 • Katana ZERO
 • Slay the Spire
 • Risk of Rain

As mentioned, each of these crossovers include a character skin, a new weapon and a new skill – and the best part is that it is all free. Dead Cells has continued to get constant updates over the past 4 years, and while some of them are paid, it is nice to see so much content being offered for free. We also know that 2023 is going to be the biggest year yet for the game, and so it is clear that Dead Cells is going stronger than ever.

Released all the way back in 2018, Dead Cells is a rogue-lite metroidvania-inspired action platformer featuring fast and frantic combat alongside a near endless amount of unique weapons. Since its release, the game has received consistent content updates. 4 years on, the game is still going strong, with 2023 promised to be “the most exciting year in Dead Cells history.”

In a post on Steam, Dead Cells’ developer Motion Twin discussed the future of the game, saying “We're taking a little breather from constant alpha/beta/update announcements to kill off the belief that, with the latest DLC ‘The Queen and the Sea', we are at or near the end of Dead Cells' lifetime. We can see how people ended up thinking this, but reports of our death have been greatly exaggerated…”

With that, the team released a roadmap for the game, highlighting the next year of content updates. This summer will bring with it “the long awaited panchaku and a new flame head outfit based on our beloved animated trailers, a ton of rebalancing on weapons & items, reworking the legendaries system to make it more intuitive & interesting, a Soul Knight weapon & outfit and you'll be able to pet the pets.”

The Autumn months will add a multitude of boss rush modes, allowing you to hone your skills while also earning new unlockables. The Winter season will bring with it another update, though the team is currently keeping it “under wraps”, so we will have to wait and see.

Perhaps the most exciting revelation is the fact that updates will continue into 2023, with the upcoming year said to be “by far our biggest year since the 1.0 launch and we're thrilled to show you what we've been cooking up behind the scenes.”

The team concluded by claiming that “we're very much in the mid-life of Dead Cells” meaning we may be seeing new content dropping for the game all the way until 2026. It will be interesting to see just how different Dead Cells will be come its end-of-life when compared to the game’s already content-rich 1.0 release.

The reputation of Dead Cells might have been marred by a high-profile plagiarised review, but that hasn’t stopped the indie game from being a commercial and critical success. Fans have already turned their eyes towards the future, however developer Motion Twin isn’t interested in a Dead Cells sequel.

Dead Cells was an unexpected hit for Motion Twin, being its first game to hit Steam and the Switch’s digital version selling better than its console competitors. While success often points to a sequel, game designer Sébastien Bénard told Game Informer that the 11-person team will be moving onto other projects instead.

“In terms of a sequel, we know for sure it’s not a good idea to dwell on your success. If you create a big hit, it’s best to use this energy to make something different. I don’t think we’ll make a Dead Cells 2,” explained Bénard.

“We’re more open to creating more content and opening the game up more to the community. If we did make a Dead Cells 2, it’s because we really need the money (laughs). We don’t want to stick to the same thing though, so I think if we did come back it would be something quite different, not a platformer or roguelike along these lines.”

Considering Dead Cells was the evolution of a self-described tower defense game that simply “wasn’t fun,” it’s perhaps best not to burn one candle until it’s fizzled out.

KitGuru Says: Our very own BoMenzzz found the endless rogue-like gameplay to have “rinse and repeat play ability without causing boredom.” What would you like to see from Motion Twin in the future? Are you sad that Dead Cells 2 is off the table?

The post DEAD CELLS PC : Live GAMEPLAY – Rogue Lite Castlevania inspired! first appeared on KitGuru.]]>
So after seeing Dead Cells everywhere for such a long time, I decided to have a little nosy at the game and what it's all about.
“Rogue-lite, Castlevania inspired action-platformer” this platformer part had me feeling a bit cold, as I'm not normally the biggest fan of these style of games. This one however, peaked my interest as I felt it could have a lot of similarities to ‘Dark Souls', but in 2D.

Its a tough game to play – its based around ‘Cells' which help you level up and unlock new helpful items. When you die you lose cells and respawn straight back at the beginning with your tail between your legs. That said, I became quickly addicted to the game, and before I knew I was dying left, right and center. However, don't let this ‘dying' part spoil your hopes and dreams and make you think you are a failure… as it's all a learning curve.

As you play through the game, you quickly find yourself learning enemy attack patterns and how to successfully dodge them.

Shortly into my game play session I picked up a freeze weapon and was able to freeze my foes into solid blocks of ice! Then I was able to slash them to death with my sword. It was a V.I.C.T.O.R.Y for me as I killed my first ‘elite' (boss) this way!

The game includes a non-linear progression system, this means every time you die the levels change layout and you are able to take different routes and discover new potential secrets and LOOT. I like this because it doesn't get old quickly, it feels like an entirely ‘new' level the more you go through, play and die… The game has absolutely zero checkpoints and this makes you worry about your health.

During my game play I had 15HP left, and i tried the typical ‘Dark Souls' tactic of just running through, try to avoid and hope for the best.. However I got stuck and then tried to dodge for my life, but failed miserably. I really did worry about losing that little bit of health I had left, as I felt like the run through I had of that area was a great success.

For an indie game, I definitely feel that the money is worth it here. It doesn't really feel like there would be an ‘end' to the game. It feels like the game has a massive rinse and repeat play ability without causing boredom.

KitGuru says: All in all, I definitely want to continue grinding my way through these dungeons and see what lies ahead for future plays!

Update (08/08/18): IGN found itself knee deep in controversy earlier this week after YouTuber Boomstick Gaming pointed out a number of similarities between his Dead Cells review and that of the publication’s Nintendo Editor Filip Miucin. After an internal investigation, IGN has parted ways with Miucin and is in contact with Boomstick Gaming to make amends.

After Boomstick Gaming revealed the similarities, IGN removed both the video and written versions of its review, with the latter redirecting to a statement apologising for incident. This has since been updated to reveal that the publication is no longer working with Miucin. “We will work tirelessly to ensure that, regardless of whether you agree with our reviews, you can have faith that every word is nothing less than the genuine opinions of our critics,” IGN explains.

“Though we as a community often share feelings and even certain word choices to describe the games we love by using similar frames of understanding, this particular situation stepped over the line and is not a reflection of our editorial standards. We apologize to our readers, developer Motion Twin, and most especially the YouTuber known under Boomstick Gaming for failing to uphold those standards.”

IGN co-founder Peer Schneider has added separately that the company is in contact with Boomstick Gaming to recompense Miucin’s wrongdoings. Boomstick has received overwhelming support from the press and neighbouring YouTube personalities for his plagiarism plight, helping his channel surge from 11,000 followers to 38,000 and counting in just a few days.

Dead Cells developer Motion Twin will see another, presumably more genuine IGN review appear in the coming days.

Original Story (07/08/18): IGN has turned heads with its latest review of Motion Twin’s Dead Cells, after it was brought to light that the publication has potentially plagiarised a smaller YouTuber by the name of Boomstick Gaming. Boomstick highlighted the uncanny similarities in a comparison video, resulting in IGN taking its review down in order to conduct an internal investigation.

IGN’s review of the rogue lite platformer debuted on August 6th in written and video form, almost two weeks after Boomstick Gaming uploaded his own breakdown on YouTube to his 14,000 subscribers. Boomstick shortly followed IGN’s release with his own comparison video, drawing attention the similarities between his work and the stylings of author Filip Miucin, who acts as IGN’s Nintendo editor.

While nothing can really be said about the deduction that Dead Cells is certainly a Metroidvania-inspired title, almost everything about IGN’s review was reminiscent of Boomstick’s effort, from the structure to sentences which differed ever so slightly on its vocabulary. A perfect example of this is the closing statements transcribed by Boomstick.

 • Boomstick: “Dead Cells figures out and intriguing way to have your rogue lite and metroidvania experience all in one by focusing on your failures and urging you to try something new the next time.”
 • Filip: “Dead Cells strikes a perfect and engaging balance between the metroidvania and rogue lite experiences by focusing on your failures and urging you to experiment when you do fail.”

IGN has since taken both its video and written reviews of Dead Cells down, redirecting users to a statement addressing the issue: “As a group of writers and creators who value our own work and that of others in our field, the editorial staff of IGN takes plagiarism very seriously. In light of concerns that have been raised about our Dead Cells review, we've removed it for the time being and are investigating.”

It’s unclear what went wrong in IGN’s production of its Dead Cells video, with too many coincidences to ignore in Boomstick’s claim to plagiarism. Most comment sections are in agreement that this isn’t the standard expected from a large company such as IGN, however the publication is already taking steps to ensure that it doesn’t happen again.
