Earlier in 2023, Square Enix announced that their Marvel’s Avengers game would be delisted from digital stores after just two and a half years on the market, cementing the fact that the live-service title failed to capture fans in the way that the publisher was hoping. Just over 3 years on from its launch, Marvel’s Avengers is now no longer available to purchase – ending its life cycle with a less-than-stellar legacy.

The 30th of September marked the final day that Marvel’s Avengers could be bought digitally, and as we are now in the month of October, the AAA Square Enix-published title can no longer be purchased on any digital storefronts across PC, PlayStation and Xbox.

News of its delisting was confirmed all the way back in January and so those who were planning to pick it up had plenty of time to do so. Still, the fact that a game as big as Avengers can no longer be bought just a few years after its launch remains somewhat surprising.

If you already own the game, you will still be able to access pretty much all of the content at least, including both solo and multiplayer; limited-time events; and operations. Customer support however has now officially ceased operation.

Speaking on its end-of-life, the Marvel’s Avengers dev team said “Thank you to all our players for joining us on these adventures and letting us tell our stories with Kamala, Bruce, Tony, Steve, Nat, Thor, Clint, Kate, T'Challa, Pete, Jane, and Bucky. For anyone who hasn’t joined us yet, we hope you jump on this final chance to join Earth’s Mightiest Heroes alongside your friends. Remember: good isn’t a thing you are; it’s a thing you do.”

Sega officially announced Sonic Origins earlier this month, a new collection of remasters, covering everything from the original Sonic the Hedgehog to Sonic CD. The game has already caused some controversy due to day-one DLC plans and pre-order bonuses. Now adding on to that, Sega has announced plans to delist older Sonic titles so that new buyers have to pick up the new remasters.

Sega announced this week that it plans to delist Sonic the Hedgehog 1, 2 and 3, as well as Sonic & Knuckles and Sonic CD, from all digital store fronts, including Xbox, PlayStation and various PC marketplaces. The only platform that won't be impacted is the Nintendo Switch, where Sonic the Hedgehog 1 and 2 will remain available as part of Sega Ages and through Nintendo Switch Online.

The original Sonic games will all be delisted on the 20th of May, so you still have some time to pick them up if you'd rather keep the original games and not move on to the new Sonic Origins remaster.

Sonic Origins will be launching on the 23rd of June for PC, as well as current and last-gen consoles. Each game will have a brand new opening and ending animation, and new graphics and gameplay modes to choose from. However, some content will be locked behind DLC – even buying the most expensive edition of the game does not include every DLC pack, so the situation is a bit of a minefield to navigate.

KitGuru Says: This is unfortunately a common practise across the industry, but I do wish more publishers would be willing to leave classic games on sale alongside new remasters.

It looks like Sega has removed Alien: Colonial Marines from the Steam store, along with the 2010 version of Alien Vs Predator, just a couple of months after the release of Alien: Isolation. Aliens: Colonial Marines launched back in 2013 and widely disappointed both fans and critics alike.

Since then, the game has been at the center of an on going class action lawsuit, claiming that Gearbox and Sega falsely advertised the game. This isn't the first time we have seen a game removed from Steam but in this case, it is unlikely to be a licensing issue as Sega just published Alien: Isolation in October. It is doubtful that the company would have released a game just before its franchise license came to an end.

Alien: Isolation hasn't been affected by these game removals. Additionally, the classic Alien Vs Predator titles are also still available on Steam. Sega has yet to comment on the game's removal from Steam and it is currently unclear as to whether or not AvP 2010 or Colonial Marines will return.

KitGuru Says: Given the negative press and on-going lawsuit surrounding Alien: Colonial Marines, I'm not surprised that it was removed from Steam. However, the 2010 Alien Vs Predator title was actually fairly well received so it isn't immediately clear as to why it has been taken down. The games may return but we won't know for sure until Sega says something.
