Dell is not a name many people would associate with quality tablets. Rather, most would associate the company with mass-produced office PCs, or at best the expensive Alienware brand. However, Dell have recently expanded into other areas, with tablets being one of them. The Venue 8 7840 is certainly a premium product, costing £330. Is it a quality device, however? We take a look and see if it's worth buying.

The Dell Venue 8 7840 is an 8.4-inch Android tablet. It has several interesting features, not least of which include a 2560*1600 OLED display, the latest Intel Atom Z3580 processor, and an Intel RealSense Depth Camera. There's a lot to talk about with the Venue 7840 – but is that good or bad?

The Dell Streak was released to a mixed reception. While a niche audience adopted the 5 inch smartphone, critics weren't overly enamored with the design. Kitguru really liked it, and we reviewed it twice, following up when Dell released the 2.2 Froyo operating system.

Sadly, Dell have bid adieu to the hybrid size design and said ‘It's been a great ride'. Inside sources claim that Dell are wanting to target the full size tablet market with both 7 inch and 9/10 inch designs.

The Dell 7 inch Streak, is a new 7 inch design which has been a talking point, due to the competitive price point – of around $200 after rebates in America. Sadly reviews we have seen have yet again been less than stellar, with PCWorld giving it a score of 2 stars out of 5 stars claiming that the colours lack vibrancy and the interface (based on Android 2.2) is buggy. They even claim that the display has pixelation issues with both graphics and text.

Dell have been working on a 10 inch tablet – the ‘Dell Streak 10 Pro', with a release already made for the Chinese market. It apparently uses the Android 3.1 operating system, but it has yet to hit Western Shores.

Rumour is circulating that Dell are due to release a new hybrid laptop-tablet within the next week. In a radical design concept it appears that unlike many manufacturers Dell are not taking on the Apple iPad, well not directly.

Dell are said to be in the process of organising an official announcement on the 10 inch Inspiron Duo, probably around the 23rd of November.

Unlike many who are directly targeting the Apple iPad, Dell have opted to modify a laptop design. You can open up the case, flip the screen and convert the machine into a clamshell style netbook.

The hardware inside is said to be a dual core ATOM processor, which Kitguru reviewed in the recent ASRock ION3D system. We found it to be much better than the previous models, but still no powerhouse. However for this design concept it should be very solid indeed. Dell are including Windows 7 as the operating system of choice.

Will this be the perfect workhorse system for a mixture of end user? We will reserve judgement until we get our hands on one.

KitGuru says: We have yet to receive pricing information or exact dates of release, but expect it soon.

Dell have detailed their second tablet computer in a move to enhance their mobile range – in a head to head battle with the Apple iPad for sales.

In a similar move to Samsung, Michael Dell said their 7 inch tablet will be running the Google Android operating system. They have yet to release detailed technical information on the product or the expected release date.

The tablet marketplace is a gold mine right now and all the major players are releasing tablet based computers, just in time for the Christmas sales. Kitguru looked at the first Dell tablet based smartphone called The Streak and it surprised us just how good the product was. Of particular interest was Google's Android which left us with positive impressions. Unfortunately it appears as if it wasn't a huge seller for Dell as they said sales were “interesting, exciting, but immaterial to Dell's $60 billion in revenue.” Ouch – basically it has been a bit of a flop then, as far as we can tell.

KitGuru says: We will be interested to see the product that Dell release to market, with their generally excellent screen technology we can see this being a viable alternative to the Apple iPad. Apple, Samsung or Dell? The choice is there to be made.

02 have just announced that they are stocking the Dell Streak from June onwards. The Streak has yet to get pricing confirmation and should also be offered at the CarPhone Warehouse.

The Dell Streak is a five inch touchscreen toy and is being positioned in the same sector as a smartphone. “The Dell Streak hits the sweet spot between traditional smartphones and larger-screen tablets, Its unique size provides people new ways to enjoy, connect, and navigate their lives.” said Ron Garriques, president of the Dell Communication Solutions Group.

The processor is a 1GHZ Qualcomm Snapdragon and it also offers 3G, Bluetooth and Wi-FI. A 5MP autofocus camera is also incorporated with a dual LED flash system. If you want to add more storage it is expandable via Micro SD and supports up to 32GB.

KitGuru says: Is that a 5 inch bulge in your pocket or are you just glad to see me ?
