Back in June, Apple announced that long-time chief designer, Jony Ive, would be leaving the company behind and starting up his own design firm. Now, the changeover is as official as can be, with Ive being removed from Apple's executive leadership page.

Ive's last day at Apple was never specifically announced, all we knew is that he was set to leave for good at some point before the end of the year. The last big project from Ive will have been Apple's new ‘spaceship' headquarters, which the company moved into in 2017.

Now that Ive is officially gone, he will begin work at his own design consultancy business called LoveFrom, with Apple being the company's first client, likely as a thank you for Ive's three decades of work as an instrumental part of Apple's product team. What exactly comes from this partnership remains to be seen but it seems unlikely that Apple will use a third-party design team for any marquee products.

Currently, software and hardware design is now the responsibility of Jeff Williams, Apple's COO, although a new Chief Design Officer could step in eventually.

KitGuru Says: This is the end of an era for Apple, although it could be a while before we see any kind of impact that this change may have.

Blizzard co-founder Mike Morhaime stepped down as the company’s president in October, 2018, initially retaining his position as a strategic advisor. After 28 long years at the firm and a handful of recent shake-ups at parent company Activision Blizzard, it looks like Morhaime is leaving for good in just a couple of months.

Upon stepping down as president, Morhaime appears to have entered a six-month notice period, as revealed by Activision’s recent Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) filing. “Mr. Morhaime’s employment with the Company as a strategic advisor will conclude on April 7, 2019,” reads the submission.

This is just the latest in a range of changes made to Activision Blizzard’s senior staff. While World of Warcraft executive producer J. Allen Brack has taken the reins as Blizzard’s president, former Call of Duty executive vice president and general manager Rob Kostich will now serve as president of Activision. Humam Sakhnini has taken the role of Activision’s King Digital president after stepping up from his duties as a chief financial officer (CFO) and chief strategy officer, and former CFO Dennis Durkin is now president of the company’s Emerging Businesses division.

Plenty have also left the company over the past few months, starting with Activision CFO Spencer Neumann, who was rumoured to have breached his contract after he was discovered to be in talks to assume a new role at Netflix. The terms of the SEC filing behind his departure remain in question, but Neumann did indeed resurface as the streaming giant’s CFO. This was shortly followed by CFO Amrita Ahuja, who was poached by rival studio Square Enix after 8 years with Activision.

Sadly, Activision’s properties have also taken a hit in a bid to save costs. Although Spyro is on fire with the success of his Reignited Trilogy, the high-profile Skylanders collaboration has fallen through. The Destiny franchise will also be departing from Activision’s roster, after Bungie managed to retain the rights when the two companies split.

KitGuru Says: It looks to be a period of uncertainty for the publisher as things haven’t had a chance to settle down in quite some time. Personally, I’ve liked the emphasis on remade nostalgic titles that have otherwise aged horribly over the past two decades, but new leadership could very well steer Activision in an even better direction.

Bioware has been losing quite a few staff members linked to Mass Effect: Andromeda recently. Over the last couple of months, the game has lost its development director, its lead writer and now, Bioware's senior editor is leaving the studio and exiting the games industry entirely.

While we don't know why the development director left, we do know that Mass Effect's lead writer switched over to Bungie to begin writing for Destiny after wrapping up the story content of Mass Effect: Andromeda.

As for Bioware's Senior Editor, Cameron Harris, who was also working on the new Mass Effect, she is choosing to exit the games industry entirely to pursue other opportunities. Writing on Twitter she said: “I've decided to exit the video-game industry to return to Seattle for new opportunities there. I'll be leaving BioWare in mid-April. I had a great time at BioWare, working with so many talented, passionate folks. I'm grateful for everything you taught me over the years. I wish all the best for my friends and colleagues at BioWare and across the games industry. You are some of the finest people I know.”

Despite these few key departures, according to EA, Bioware still has Mass Effect 4 on track for a Q1 2017 release, which is pushed back slightly from the previously forecast Q4 2016 release date.

KitGuru Says: Bioware has seen quite a few departures recently which leaves me pretty curious as to what is going on behind the scenes over there. Hopefully this doesn't end up spelling trouble for the new Mass Effect trilogy.
