Mere weeks after the successful premiere of the Detective Pikachu film back in 2019, Nintendo announced that a new video game entry was in the works for the Switch. The console manufacturer has been radio silent on this project ever since – until now. Re-revealed during the recent Nintendo Direct, Detective Pikachu Returns this October.

Years after its original announcement, Detective Pikachu Returns has been officially shown off, with Nintendo describing the game as follows:

“Solve mysteries with the personality-packed Detective Pikachu! Unravel a series of mysteries across Ryme City with a tough-talking, coffee-loving Pikachu who calls himself a great detective. This Pikachu may have a self-assured attitude and talk like a middle-aged man, but he somehow manages to keep his lovable charm. Together with his partner Tim Goodman, this great detective duo cracks several cases with the help of the many Pokemon and people who live in Ryme City.”

It continues, “Investigate Ryme City, where Pokemon and people live side by side. Search for clues in Ryme City, where Pokemon and humans coexist in harmony. With the help of many other Pokemon, Tim and his talkative Pikachu partner work together to solve a series of mysterious incidents in this cinematic adventure game.”

The contrast of Detective Pikachu’s voice compared to his appearance is once again present, leading to what appears to be a somewhat comedic adventure. Hopefully the game resonates with fans of Pokemon and the Detective Pikachu film alike when Detective Pikachu Returns launches on the 6th of October.

It would appear as though we have entered the age of video game adaptations. With projects such as Detective Pikachu, Sonic the Hedgehog and Castlevania seeing a great deal of success, studios seem more eager than ever to adapt the rich history of video game franchises into other mediums. The most recent announcement comes from Netflix, who will be creating a “live action feature adaptation” of the 1983 laserdisk game – Dragon’s Lair, with Ryan Reynolds in the starring role.

The announcement came via Netflix's NX Twitter account, and states that “Netflix is developing a live action feature adaptation of the legendary 80s arcade game Dragon's Lair”. Furthermore, Ryan Reynolds is in talks to play “noble Knight Dirk the Daring, on his quest to rescue Princess Daphne from the titular dragon”. Not much is known regarding the plot and whether the adaptation will stay faithful to the story of the original game, or whether more meta elements – such as the game’s harsh difficulty and constant repetition due to player deaths – will be factored into the story.

This of course won’t be Ryan Reynold’s first foray into video game adaptations, and video game-related projects. The Hollywood actor has most famously played the titular Pikachu in 2019’s Detective Pikachu. He is also set to appear in the upcoming film ‘Free Guy’ where he plays an NPC bank teller who realises that they are in a video game.

Netflix is quickly becoming well known for its video game adaptations. The media service provider recently announced that its animated Castlevania adaptation would be receiving a fourth season. Other properties set to be adapted by Netflix includes Resident Evil and Devil May Cry.

The Dragon’s Lair adaptation is set to be produced by Don Bluth, Roy Lee, Trevor Engelson, Gary Goldman and Jon Pomeroy, with Daniel and Kevin Hageman confirmed to be the writers. The Hageman’s are known best for The LEGO Movie and Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark – both of which saw a consistent and positive reception from both critics and fans alike. Furthermore, Bluth is one of the original creators of Dragon’s Lair, meaning that the adaptation should hold true to the original game’s vision.

With an established crew, a well-revered lead comedy star, the blessing of the game’s creator, and Netflix’s backing, the Dragon’s Lair adaptation certainly has all it needs in order to be a great success.

It would appear as though we are beginning to enter the age of video game film adaptations. Shortly after the release of Sonic the Hedgehog’s live-action film, another video game is set to be adapted for film. This time, the game which will see its silver screen debut is Borderlands. Interestingly, the film is said to be directed by Eli Roth, known best for his work in the horror genre.

Reported by The Hollywood Reporter, it was announced that Eli Rother would serve as Director for this film adaptation. Eli Roth is a director who is most familiar with the horror genre, having directed well known titles such as Cabin Fever, Hostel, and The Green Inferno. Speaking on the film, Roth stated “I’m so excited to dive into the world of Borderlands, and I could not be doing it with a better script, producing team and studio. I have a long, successful history with Lionsgate — I feel like we have grown up together and that everything in my directing career has led to a project of this scale and ambition.”

The film will be distributed by Lionsgate and produced by Avi and Ari Arad, who have produced a large number of Marvel films. Nathan Kahane, president of the Lionsgate Motion Picture Group claimed that “with Eli's vision and Craig's screenplay, we believe we have cracked the code on bringing the anarchic world of Borderlands to the big screen in a big way that will be a fresh, compelling and cinematic event for moviegoers and fans of the game.”

Video game film adaptations have had a tumultuous history with some, such as Sonic the Hedgehog and Detective Pikachu being embraced by fans, while others are shunned by them. Hopefully Borderlands will land in the former, especially as Gearbox’s CEO Randy Pitchford, and Strauss Zelnik, CEO of Take-Two will serve as executive producers to the project.

KitGuru says: What do you think of a Borderlands film being in the works? Do you think Eli Roth is the right director for the Job? What’s your favorite video game film adaptation? Let us know down below.

The Sonic the Hedgehog film has had a tumultuous development. From the near universal dislike for the original trailer, to the studio completely redesigning Sonic, leading to delays in the films release, concerns were raised that these served as a bad omen for the film itself. It would seem that hasn’t been the case, as the film has now overtaken Detective Pikachu to achieve the best domestic opening weekend record for any video game film ever.

Having released on the 14th of February, the Sonic the Hedgehog film managed to achieve a three-day opening weekend total of $57 million, which is greater than Detective Pikachu’s $54.3 million. The film is predicted to make a 4 day domestic total of $70 million. Worldwide, the film has managed to rake in over $111 million. With a budget of $85 million, the film is set to make great returns.

The success doesn't end there, as Sonic the Hedgehog represents only the third video game film to be rated at over 50% on Rotten Tomatoes – currently standing at 63% (and an audience score of 95%). This marks a positive shift in the narrative of the Sonic the Hedgehog film.

Back in April 2019, Paramount Pictures released the first trailer for the film. Originally set to be released in November that year, the trailer saw mass criticism mainly due to the design of sonic, which was deemed to have been in the uncanny valley. In response, Paramount opted to delay the film, in order to redesign Sonic.

Later in November, a second trailer was released, featuring the newly designed Sonic. Reception was much more positive, but concerns were raised that perhaps it was too little too late, and that people had made their minds up already. If early response is anything to go by, this hasn’t been the case.

It’s good to see that both fans and critics seem to be enjoying the film. Though it is a shame that the studio responsible for fixing the design shut down, at least their final project is being regarded as a success.

While Paramount is busy trying to fix Sonic The Hedgehog for his live action debut, the folks over at Warner Bros are sitting pretty on top of a $161m opening weekend for Detective Pikachu. The live-action Pokémon film is off to a great start, in large part thanks to the series’ worldwide reach.

Detective Pikachu was always an odd prospect. The Pokémon animated series has been going for decades, but this marks the first time that the series has ventured into live-action territory. According to box office data from Variety, Detective Pikachu made $58 million in the United States over its opening weekend, with the rest of the world bringing in an extra $103 million.

In the US, Detective Pikachu has broken the record for the highest earning opening weekend for a video game movie, beating out the likes of Lara Croft: Tomb Raider (2001) and Prince of Persia. Detective Pikachu also beat out domestic opening weekend results for Warcraft.

Over the course of its run, Warcraft made around $430 million at the box office worldwide, in large part thanks to China, where the movie earned over $150 million. There is still time for Detective Pikachu to catch up though, and given the film’s higher ratings on Rotten Tomatoes, I wouldn’t be surprised if it went on to beat Warcraft by the end of its run.

KitGuru Says: Detective Pikachu has had a better reception than I expected. Did any of you go and see it over the weekend? What did you think of it?

It turns out that the world at large, be they players or mega-corporations, have remembered that just about everyone loves Pokémon in some guise. That's why Legendary Entertainment, the company behind Batman Begins and the Hangover III, is going to be making a live-action movie about it, all focused on Detective Pikachu.

If Detective Pikachu isn't an element of the franchise you were aware of, it's not really much of a surprise. Although the main Pokémon games have enjoyed international acclaim, for their explorative, storytelling, brawling and all out Pokémon collecting gameplay, Great Detective Pikachu is a Japanese only phenomenon that sees players solving mysteries with… well, a Pikachu who wears a deer stalker.

As a relatively recent game, released for the 3DS by Creatures back in February this year, it's somewhat surprising that that's the property Legendary chose for the first live-action Pokémon feature film.

You might assume that with a Japanese-only game release, that this would see Legendary only release the movie in Japan too, but no, Detective Pikachu the movie will receive a full release in the west too, with Universal handling the distribution.

Eurogamer has it that Netflix was one of the interested parties who bidded for the chance to sink its teeth into the Detective Pikachu franchise, but was unsuccessful.

Production on the film is set to begin sometime in 2017, though what that means for a release date remains to be seen. Presumably Legendary will be looking to get the movie out as quick as possible though, as it may be that with the recent surge in interest in Pokémon, that other companies will be looking to cash in with feature projects too.

KitGuru Says: It's funny how much Pokémon Go has woken people up to the idea of Pokémon still being a huge franchise. While we all knew it was popular, did anyone expect the recent augmented reality app to do quite as well as it did? Niantic certainly didn't considering the state of the servers.
