Second Extinction is a co-op focused dinosaur-shooting FPS which first released in Early Access back in October of 2020. Unfortunately, despite the team’s best efforts, the game seemingly failed to meet sales expectations – leading to the title being set to permanently go offline.

Making the announcement via their blog, the team at Systemic Reaction released a post titled ‘A FINAL UPDATE ON SECOND EXTINCTION’ in which they revealed the unfortunate news, saying:

“We write to you today with a mix of emotions as we share important news about our future plans for the game. After thoughtful consideration and exploration of our best course of action, we have made the difficult decision to end active development of Second Extinction.”

Explaining their reasons behind this decision, they continued, “While Second Extinction is well-loved among our players and the gaming community, it regrettably did not achieve the success we hoped it would. Additionally, some unforeseen show-stopping issues prevented us from leaving Early Access and Game Preview.”

Additionally, the team revealed that “we initially planned to launch the 1.0 version late last year, but the discovery of a few critical issues forced us to pull back close to the release. Unfortunately, it became clear that our small team lacked the resources necessary to hit our quality targets and exit Early Access and Game Preview, and the investment needed to do so was too large for us to bear.”

With all this in mind, the title is being removed from store fronts, and while you can still  play the game for now if you already own it, Second Extinction will eventually go offline at some point next year – though no exact date has been provided yet.

The one silver lining in all of this is that the team assured fans that “there are no layoffs associated with this decision. The passion, talent, and skill of the team who worked on Second Extinction is being put to good use on other projects across Avalanche Studios Group.”

It is a shame to see that the team’s passions and ideas ultimately did not pan out the way they had hoped, but it is already encouraging to see that Systemic Reaction will continue to operate and work on new ideas. Hopefully their next project hits the way they need it to.

We should have seen it coming. The '90s were all about dinosaurs, and the '00s were all about zombies, so of course this decade would be all about dinosaurs again. Not every game needs to be like Ark: Survival Evolved though. In-fact, the games we play with dinosaurs should be a lot more nerve racking, as these are giant beasts that could stomp on us very easily; which is exactly what our VR equipped player character looks set to try to avoid in the upcoming Robinson: The Journey from Crytek.

robinson

Shown off in a trailer at Sony's press conference at the Paris Games Week, Robinson: The Journey highlights just how monstrous the creatures of a prehistoric world are, how dangerous they can potentially be and how just admiring them from far-too-close, could be a very fun part of the game. Clearly though, not all of them will absent mindedly stomp around you; some of them will want to hunt you.

[yframe url='http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AOZtqDhQP44′]

And that will be terrifying in virtual reality, which is what this game was designed to showcase. We saw a demonstration of this sort of technology earlier this year in a Crytek trailer called Back to Dinosaur Island. At the time (and still, arguably) it was the best looking VR demo yet released and if the new Robinson trailer is anything to go by, that seems unlikely to change when the game is finally launched.

Indeed that's the demo that got Crytek into thinking it should make a full experience too, as the feedback for it was so positive.

“What are we striving to achieve with Robinson: The Journey? You could say it's about recreating that level of authenticity on a much, much grander scale,” said executive producer Elijah Freeman on the PlayStation Blog (via EG). “That means not just making something visually stunning, but also telling a story that is emotionally engaging and which resonates with players beyond the game world.”

Although we don't have a confirmed release date, Robinson: The Journey will launch sometime in the first half of 2016, with support for both the PC and PS4 and presumably Oculus Rift, HTC Vive and PlayStation VR.

KitGuru Says: This is one VR experience I'm very excited for. I imagine it'll be pretty terrifying, but in a more “holy s*** that's going to eat me,” rather than the usual horror game, “ah, get away from me you creepy girl.”

Quick, name three dinosaurs. Ok here's mine: T-Rex, stegosaurus, triceratops. These (along with Iguanodon in a close 4th) were the dinosaurs I loved the most as a kid and chances are, each of them with their very distinctive and different looks, will be on most of your lists too. However, now as an adult, my pre-historic vocabulary is a bit bigger and I understand that these dinosaurs were part of their own groups. Triceratops for example, was a member of the ceratopsid family and he's just gotten a new cousin to play with, as scientists have discovered a brand new, frilled leaf eater.

Mercuriceratops Gemini is it's name and while still sporting three horns like our tri-named pal up there, his were much shorter, though his frill was much larger and more decorative. Looking at the bones dug up by scientists in Alberta, Canada, they've been able to deduce that Mercuriceratops lived around 77 million years ago, was about six metres long and weighed upwards of two tonnes.

Mercuriceratops is the central, elaborately frilled individual

Its name means “mercury horned-face,” due to similarities between the wings on the helmet of the God Mercury and the large frill of the dinosaur. While similar species have been found elsewhere in the world, with parrot beak-like mouths and three horns, Mercuriceratops has the interesting mutation of a giant frill, presumably used for display, rather than combat.

While initially thought to be for protection only, the large frills found behind the head on ceratopsian dinosaurs are now thought to not be strong enough to offer armoured protection against bigger predators. Instead they may have offered a dual purpose, potentially for attracting a mate, regulating blood flow, or potentially allowing for the attachment of large muscles for chewing or some other means.

Of course due to the method of discovery, we may never know as muscle fragments are notoriously hard to find in a fossilised state. Completed skeletons just as much in some cases, as in this one scientists are basing their findings off of two skull fragments, which have been extrapolated to give the predicted shape and size of the animal.

KitGuru Says: When I was growing up, all I wanted to be was a palaeontologist. I still think it sounds like quite a romantic, adventurous profession, but I certainly imagined digging up giant skeletons, rather than fragments.

Kickstarter success and all round childhood dream title The Stomping Land, is fast approaching its beta release and to celebrate that fact, the creators over at SuperCrit, are releasing extra details about the game every day over the next week.

So far we've reached day II, which breaks down who exactly the player is in this dinosaur dominated world and how they can survive – if they're careful. “You are a hunter and a scavenger,” it begins, really highlighting that this isn't some dinosaur slaughtering romp through the wilderness. This is Rust, with lizards that weigh upwards of five tonnes trying to eat you.

But it's more dangerous than even that pantless, infested world: as most dinosaurs in The Stomping Land can kill you with one hit. Most of them too, you can't even kill if you get a bunch of your fellow hunters together. Your little spears and arrows just won't do enough damage. How do you scavenge from these great beasts then, you might be asking? By letting other, bigger dinosaurs kill them for you.

“It's up you to track these epic prehistoric creatures, let them fight to the death and then salvage the remains.” Just as with Rust and those lovely supply drops of C4 though, in Stomping Land there's other hunters to watch out for and finding yourself first to a big kill is only good if you can get what you need and get out fast.

tracking
Tracking will require patience and skill, especially with the more elusive dinosaurs

While we didn't know that some dinosaurs couldn't be killed before, it seemed quite self explanatory when you consider the size of these things and how thick their hide would have been, early human technology really wouldn't cut it. One element we haven't heard or figured out before though, is the tracking that Stomping Land will employ.

To find these giant dinosaurs, which have better meat and resources to gather from, you'll need to use footprints, with each major dinosaur having a unique spore. However you'll also be able to hear them in the distance and tell them apart by the sound. But if you get stuck and need to track them over huge distances, Stomping Land has stars that follow each of the major dinos around, giving you a rough idea of their location. When two come together as well, you know there's a big scrap going on somewhere. You won't be able to use them during the day though and expect rain and ambient sound to make finding footprints or noises that much harder.

Stomping Land is set for release on the PC in April.

KitGuru Says: This is Molyneux's BC, but with PVP. This could be an amazing game. I for one can't wait to try it.
