Metro Exodus is due for a big graphical upgrade this year and it won't just be for next-gen consoles. An enhanced edition of the game has now been announced for PC too, with improved ray-tracing, performance and other features.

The enhancement list is huge, boasting full ray-traced lighting, denoising, improved temporal reconstruction technology, emissive lighting, ray-traced reflections, 4K textures and other bug fixes. The PC version will also be getting upgraded to DLSS 2.0, which should be a notable improvement over the DLSS 1.0 technology in the current version of the game. Consoles will get an upgrade to 4K/60fps gameplay.

The PC Enhanced Edition will be a free upgrade to all owners of Metro Exodus in Spring 2021. Those who own the Xbox One or PS4 editions of Metro Exodus will also get access to the Xbox Series X/S and PS5 enhancements later this year.

Aside from all of that, 4A Games has also confirmed that Metro Exodus is coming to Mac and Linux systems this year too. You can see the developer's full breakdown of the upgrade HERE.

KitGuru Says: The enhancements for Metro Exodus sound very impressive across both PC and consoles. It will be very interesting to see comparisons between this version and the original release later this year.

After launching as a PlayStation exclusive towards the end of last year, Hideo Kojima's Death Stranding was released on PC this week. Built on the Decima Engine, the same engine that powered Horizon Zero Dawn, we spent the last few days testing over twenty graphics cards to see what sort of performance you can expect from this game. Nvidia's DLSS 2.0 technology is also present, so naturally we put this to the test as well.

Settings

Right off the bat, it is worth saying Death Stranding can only be played using DX12, there is simply no option to use another API.

Apart from that, there are a few options to tweak within the settings menu – but not loads. The primary settings include model quality, memory allocation, shadow resolution, ambient occlusion, and screen space reflections. There are four presets in the game, which adjust those settings just mentioned – the presets start at ‘low', ‘medium,' ‘default', and finish with ‘very high.' Default is said to offer equivalent visual fidelity to console, but for our testing we used the very high preset.

Driver Notes

We used the latest game ready drivers for our testing:

  • AMD GPUs were benchmarked with the Adrenalin 20.7.2 public driver.
  • Nvidia GPUs were benchmarked with the 451.67 public driver.

Test System

We test using the a custom built system from PCSpecialist, based on Intel's latest Comet Lake-S platform. You can read more about it over HERE, and configure your own system from PCSpecialist HERE.

We tested a section early on in the game, where the player has to deliver a package to the Waystation West of Capital Knot City. We ran each benchmark three times, and present mean averages in our graphs. We use OCAT to measure average frame rates as well as 1% low values across our three runs.

Closing Thoughts

Death Stranding may not be as easy to run as something like Doom Eternal, but despite being a visually impressive title, it is still possible to hit decent frame rates without needing a brand-new GPU. GTX 1060 and RX 580, for instance, are perfectly suited for 1080p/60fps gaming using very high settings.

The only caveat to this seems to be cards with 4GB (or less) video memory, as all the 4GB cards we tested exhibited reduced 1% low performance. Gamers with GPUs that simply don't have 6GB+ of VRAM will likely want to stick to slightly lower image quality settings than the very high preset that we used here.

Those with Nvidia RTX GPUs will certainly want to check out the game's DLSS 2.0 options. We tested using the Quality DLSS mode, and visually it is very hard to spot any differences between native 4K and a DLSS upscaled 4K image. In fact, DLSS even helps certain objects, like text or fine edges, look sharper than native 4K when using the game's TAA implementation. It is highly impressive and is not something that can be ignored considering the performance improvements of between 40-50% we saw from our testing.

Actual gameplay, I must confess, did not appeal to me at all. I played through the first couple of hours and found it quite slow and tedious, while I had to sit through what felt like endless cutscenes. Maybe that's just me though, so if you've been waiting to check out Death Stranding, this port performs well and looks very good, so it's definitely worth giving it a go on PC.

KitGuru says: The game itself may not be my cup of tea, but Death Stranding is visually impressive and doesn't require a high-end GPU for a smooth gaming experience.

Death Stranding is officially coming to PC on the 14th of July. With just two weeks left to go, Kojima Productions has released a PC-specific launch trailer for the game, showing off some of it in action. We also have some new details on PC features, including support for Nvidia DLSS 2.0.

Death Stranding will be the first game utilising the ‘Decima Engine' to ship on PC, with Horizon Zero Dawn set to follow later this year. Here is the PC trailer from Hideo Kojima:

In terms of performance, you will be able to get a maximum frame rate of 240Hz at whatever resolution you have, including ultra-wide. FXAA and TAA are your anti-aliasing options but if you have an Nvidia RTX GPU, you can also enable DLSS 2.0, which should enable 4K/60fps on all RTX 20 GPUs, or over 100 frames per second at 1440p.

As a reminder, here are the system requirements for Death Stranding:

Minimum:

  • OS: Windows 10.
  • CPU: Intel Core i5-3470 or AMD Ryzen 3 1200.
  • RAM: 8GB.
  • GPU: Nvidia GeForce GTX 1050 or AMD Radeon RX 560.

Recommended (30FPS)

  • OS: Windows 10.
  • CPU: Intel Core i5-4460 or AMD Ryzen 5 1400.
  • RAM: 8GB.
  • GPU: Nvidia GeForce GTX 1050Ti or AMD Radeon RX 570.

Recommended (60FPS)

  • OS: Windows 10.
  • CPU: Intel Core i7-3770 or AMD Ryzen 5 1600.
  • RAM: 8GB.
  • GPU: Nvidia GeForce GTX 1060 or AMD Radeon RX 590.

The game will also require 80GB of storage space to install and will utilise DirectX 12. While we don’t know if those recommended settings are for 1080p gameplay, we can assume that will be the baseline for this hardware. It also means those with higher-end rigs should have no trouble running at higher frame rates, resolutions or graphical settings.

Death Stranding releases on Steam and the Epic Games Store on July 14th with a few PC-specific extras, like a wearable Headcrab from Half-Life.

We learned a lot about Cyberpunk 2077 yesterday, as CD Projekt Red dropped a new trailer, gameplay, and press outlets got to share hands-on impressions with the game. For PC gamers and more specifically, RTX GPU owners, there is more news, as the ray-tracing features for Cyberpunk 2077 have been detailed and DLSS 2.0 support has also been announced.

We already knew that Cyberpunk 2077 would support ray-traced reflections, but CD Projekt Red has been taking things a step further by including support for ray-traced diffuse illumination, ray-traced shadows and ray-traced ambient occlusion. With all of that, this could perhaps be the best ray-tracing showcase since Remedy’s ‘Control’, which released last year with a similar list of features.

In the gallery above, you can see some screenshots with ray-tracing switched on. These effects do come at a hefty performance cost though, which is where DLSS 2.0 comes in. Nvidia revamped its DLSS technology earlier this year, making games appear sharper when upscaling lower resolutions. DLSS 2.0 also removes some of the odd artifacts and visual issues that would pop in titles like Shadow of the Tomb Raider and Metro Exodus at launch.

All of these features will be included in the PC version of Cyberpunk 2077 at launch. The game releases on the 19th of November and will also be playable via GeForce Now, so even non-RTX GPU owners can experience these features as long as their internet connection is up to the task.

KitGuru Says: Cyberpunk 2077 appears to have had a major graphical upgrade since we first saw the game running in 2018. What did you all think of the latest Cyberpunk 2077 showcase yesterday?

GeForce Now has had its fair share of ups and downs since its release in February. Now, Nvidia has updated its cloud streaming platform with DLSS 2.0 support – and as a bonus, the company has also added 21 new games to the library.

Deep Learning Super Sampling – or DLSS for short – is a technology developed by Nvidia that utilises machine learning and artificial intelligence to upscale low resolution images, with minimal loss in graphical fidelity compared to native resolution. The principal benefit should be reduced GPU load, increasing frame rates or – in this case – reduced server load.

With the announcement of DLSS 2.0 coming to GeForce Now, Nvidia has also stated Control will be the first game to get support for DLSS 2.0 on the platform, ‘with more games to come'.

Nvidia has also added 21 new games to GeForce Now, including some notable titles such as S.T.A.L.K.E.R.: Shadow of Chernobyl, Saints Row 2, Assassin’s Creed Brotherhood, alongside a handful of indie games. For the full list of additions, see HERE.

Alongside the launch of GeForce RTX graphics cards, Nvidia also announced DLSS, a new feature that utilises machine learning to boost game performance. In its original form, DLSS had some issues and exhibited questionable image quality in some titles. That may change starting this month, as Nvidia has now announced DLSS 2.0, overhauling the tech for better results.

If you played Wolfenstein: Youngblood after its RTX update earlier this year, then you will have already seen a preview of the quality improvements coming with DLSS 2.0. Previously with DLSS 1.0, the algorithm had to be trained on a per game basis but with DLSS 2.0, the system is much easier to integrate, which means more developers should be hopping on board to use it.

Here is Nvidia's breakdown of the improvements made for DLSS 2.0:

  • Superior Image Quality — DLSS 2.0 offers image quality comparable to native resolution while only having to render one quarter to one half of the pixels. It employs new temporal feedback techniques for sharper image details and improved stability from frame to frame.
  • Great Scaling Across All RTX GPUs and Resolutions — a new AI model more efficiently uses Tensor Cores to execute 2x faster than the original, improving frame rates and removing restrictions on supported GPUs, settings and resolutions.
  • One Network for All Games —The original DLSS required training the AI network for each new game. DLSS 2.0 trains using non-game-specific content, delivering a generalized network that works across games. This means faster game integrations, and ultimately more DLSS games.
  • Customizable Options — DLSS 2.0 offers users three image quality modes (QualityBalanced and Performance) that control render resolution, with Performance mode now enabling up to a 4x super resolution. (i.e. 1080p → 4K). This means more user choice, and even bigger performance boosts.

Several games already have DLSS 2.0 capability, including Wolfenstein: Youngblood and Deliver us the Moon. This month, Mechwarrior 5 and Control will also be patched with DLSS 2.0 improvements. Older DLSS 1.0 titles like Battlefield V, Shadow of the Tomb Raider and Metro Exodus would require a patch, so these improvements may not arrive for all previous DLSS supported titles. However, the improved integration method and support for Unreal Engine 4 means that we should see more developers adopting DLSS 2.0 as the year goes on.

Discuss on our Facebook page, HERE.

KitGuru Says: DLSS sounded very exciting to me when it was first announced but the image quality sacrifices certainly held things back. From the sounds of it, DLSS 2.0 is going to be a big upgrade all around, so I'll be looking forward to checking out the improvements in Control and Wolfenstein later in the week. Do many of you own an RTX GPU? How often do you use DLSS in its current form?
