Capcom is a rare publisher in that they publicly release concrete sales data for pretty much all of their games, letting fans know exactly how their favourite game/series is performing. The company has updated its Platinum Titles – revealing a number of new milestones.

As of the 31st of December 2023, Monster Hunter World continues to be Capcom’s best-selling game of all time, reaching 19.6 million copies (or 24.1 million if you include the Iceborne Master Edition) and helping to push the entire Monster Hunter franchise to just shy of 100 million copies – 97 million to be exact.

Speaking of series milestones, the Devil May Cry franchise has always been more of a cult hit for Capcom, with the franchise mostly residing in the shadows of franchises such as Monster Hunter, Resident Evil and Street Fighter. Even so, the DMC franchise has now officially sold over 30 million copies – putting it at Capcom’s 5th best-selling series (behind Mega Man’s 41 million copies).

It’s always interesting to see the disparity between Capcom’s big franchises and the rest of the publisher’s IPs. Considering the fact that Monster Hunter World alone has almost sold as many copies and the entirety of Devil May Cry, it’ll be curious to see just how many copies Monster Hunter Wilds ends up surpassing in its first year alone.

As with all game subscription services nowadays, titles are added and removed on a regular basis – typically monthly. While December’s PlayStation Plus Extra games have yet to even be removed, Sony has given subscribers a heads up on what is set to leave in January.

As reported by PSXBrasil, Sony has updated its ‘Leaving Soon’ list, giving fans the chance to try out or complete these games before they are ultimately removed on the 16th of January. With that, the full list of games leaving are as follows:

  • It Takes Two | PS4, PS5
  • Devil May Cry 5 | PS4
  • Devil May Cry 5 Special Edition | PS5
  • SnowRunner | PS4, PS5
  • JETT: The Far Shore + Given Time | PS4, PS5
  • OMNO | PS4
  • Pillars of Eternity II: Deadfire – Ultimate Edition | PS4
  • The MISSING: J.J. Macfield and the Island of Memories | PS4
  • Mitsurugi Kamui Hikae | PS4

While certainly not a massive list of titles, there are some heavy hitters and hidden gems which are unfortunately being removed. Of course, the biggest games leaving the service are It Takes Two and Devil May Cry 5.

It Takes Two won game of the year back in 2021 against the likes of Deathloop, Metroid Dread, And Resident Evil Village. DMC5 meanwhile is the latest entry in the much loved spectacle fighter series, featuring satisfying gameplay, flashy combat and a bombing soundtrack.

Fortunately, many of the games included are short enough to allow you plenty of time to give them a go before they are removed from the PS Plus Extra on the 16th of January. In case you missed it, December’s titles set to leave in a week’s time can be found HERE.

Capcom is one of the few publishers to directly share transparent sales figures for its games, providing data on all titles which have sold over 1 million copies. As part of the company’s latest fiscal report, Capcom revealed that the Devil May Cry series has hit a new sales milestone.

Sharing its updated list of Platinum Titles, Capcom revealed that the Devil May Cry series has now officially sold more than 30 million units – with a good portion of that being thanks to DMC5’s 7.4 million copies sold.

Another smaller franchise which continues to perform admirably is Dragon’s Dogma. Despite only having one mainline title released to date, total sales for the series has now reached 7.9 million copies – an excellent outcome, especially in anticipation of Dragon’s Dogma 2.

Though we reported on it previously, Capcom also shared that the Resident Evil franchise has now sold over 150 million units in total, making it by far the most successful franchise in the publisher’s repertoire (with Monster Hunter coming in second place at 95 million units sold).

With Capcom promising to release a new ’massive’ title by March of 2024, it will be interesting to see how these numbers shape up in comparison. We will have to wait and see.

For some, Devil May Cry represents the peak of action combat – pushing the genre further with each new entry in the series. Capcom now looks ready to bring this experience to mobile devices, announcing an open beta for Devil May Cry: Peak of Combat.

Releasing a trailer onto YouTube, Capcom officially announced that Devil May Cry: Peak of Combat can be played on your Android devices right now thanks to an open beta which runs from now for a period of 5 weeks.

For the uninitiated, Devil May Cry: Peak of Combat is “an authorized mobile game created by NebulaJoy, with the deep participation of the official team of CAPCOM” which “inherits the Devil May Cry's free, flexible, strategy skills and gorgeous, unconstrained fighting style, and at the same time, it also brings players an immersive combo experience with its industry-leading motion capture technology, which perfectly reproduces the most distinctive battles of Devil May Cry, make the experience more diverse.”

Mobile hardware is constantly improving and evolving, with many modern smartphones far outpacing the Nintendo Switch performance-wise. Considering the fact that the original Devil May Cry was ported to mobile phones all the way back in 2007, it will be interesting to see how much more improved this bespoke mobile experience ends up being all these years later.

The Devil May Cry franchise is a classic in gaming, however historically it has been a rather mild seller for publisher Capcom. That being said, the most recent entry in the series, Devil May Cry 5, is also by far its most successful – officially selling over 6 million copies.

Making the announcement on Twitter, the official Devil May Cry account said “#DevilMayCry 5 has sold more than 6 million copies worldwide! Thank you to all the SSStylish fans out there for your support!”

Devil May Cry 5 first released in March 2019, selling 2 million copies within the game’s first two weeks on the market – an impressive feat for the franchise. Since then, the title has continued to sell consistently, further boosted by the game’s Special Edition made for PS5 and Xbox Series X|S.

6 million units sold makes Devil May Cry 5 by far the best-selling entry in the franchise, with 2008’s Devil May Cry 4 being the second-best with just 3 million copies sold. That being said, DMC is far from Capcom’s most popular franchise, with the series in total selling around 26 million units – 100 million copies less than Resident Evil.

The Devil May Cry series has cemented itself as a video game classic, and while its quality wasn't always matched by its sales, Devil May Cry 5 seems to be the turning point for the franchise.

The Devil May Cry series recently celebrated its 20th anniversary. During this time, the teams at Capcom have managed to cement it as being one of the publisher’s core franchises. In the wake of DMC: Devil May Cry’s mixed reception, Capcom returned to the drawing board, ultimately creating  2019's DMC 5 – the best selling game in the franchise.

Making the announcement on Twitter, the official Japanese Devil May Cry account revealed that “Cumulative worldwide sales of ‘DMC5’ have exceeded 5 million units!” saying “Thank you for your support.”

Selling 5 million copies is a major milestone for the franchise, as until now, no other entry in the series has managed to do so. The second best selling game in the series – Devil May Cry 4 – sold a respectable 3 million copies when it was released all the way back in 2008.

With 25 million copies sold across the entire series, the Devil May Cry franchise cannot compete with the likes of Resident Evil or Monster Hunter (which have managed 123 million and 78 million copies sold respectively), but for fans of the spectacle fighter, it’s exciting to see Devil May Cry performing better than ever,

While both the Xbox Series X and Xbox Series S consoles support ray-tracing, the lower-end S console won't necessarily benefit from that as often as the higher-end Series X. We are already starting to see this be the case, as Devil May Cry 5 Special Edition will no longer have ray-traced lighting on the Series S.

In a statement posted on Twitter, Capcom clarified the features we can expect from the Special Edition on next-gen consoles. One of the key differences between the Series X and Series S versions will be in removal of ray-tracing on the series S.

While the Series S will miss out on ray-tracing in Devil May Cry 5 Special Edition, it will still get enhanced audio, reduced loading times, a 120 frames per second gameplay option as well as new content like Turbo Mode, Legendary Dark Knight difficulty and the new playable character Vergil.

Capcom did not elaborate on exactly why ray-traced lighting had to be removed from the Series S version, but it did try to smooth things over by saying that both the Series X and Series S “deliver amazing next generation speed and performance”, adding that they are “just scratching the surface of what they can do”.

KitGuru Says: Perhaps there just wasn't enough development time left to spend optimising the Series S version for ray-tracing. Although I do expect we'll see graphical features like that sacrificed more often on the Series S compared to the PS5 and Series X. Either way, it will be interesting to see how developers handle the two different console SKUs over the course of this generation.

Since 2017, Capcom has been on a roll, releasing hit after hit, with both commercial and critical reactions responding accordingly. With the resurgence in the Resident Evil series, the undeniable success of Monster Hunter, and now the announcement that Devil May Cry 5 has become the best selling game in the series in under a year, the Japanese publisher certainly has many reasons to celebrate.

On Capcom’s Investor Relations website, the publisher keeps track of the sales of its ‘Platinum Titles’ – games which have sold over 1 million copies. The figures have recently been updated to showcase all sales until the 31st of December 2019.

Many titles have shown an impressive amount of continued sales growth. Of note is Resident Evil 7, which has officially sold over 7 million copies, and puts it within striking distance of Resident Evil 6 and 5’s 7.4 and 7.6 million respectively. Also, Resident Evil 2 continues to outdo the original, selling over 5.8 million copies, putting it just behind Street Fighter II for the NES (6.3 million).

Perhaps the most impressive sales success however is that of Devil May Cry 5. Despite only being released in March of 2019, the game has already become the best selling game in the series, with over 3.1 million copies sold. This not only makes it the best selling, but the fastest selling, achieving these figures in less than 10 months. The second best selling title in the series is 2008’s Devil May Cry 4 which reached 3 million sales, though it took almost 7 years to do so.

Interestingly, the third best selling title in the franchise is 2013’s DmC Devil May Cry, which sold 2.4 million units. Positioned as a reboot for the series, the game was received well by critics, but panned by fans. The release has since been deemed to be set in an alternate universe, with Devil May Cry 5 taking place in the original universe. This back pedalling seems to have paid off, not only commercially but also critically, as the game became one of the highest rated of the year.

With the success of Devil May Cry 5, it’ll be interesting to see just how long fans will have to wait for a sequel. Though there was a six year gap between DmC Devil May Cry, and Devil May Cry 5, hopefully the wait for Devil May Cry 6, won’t be as long.

Capcom have been slowly releasing the Devil May Cry series onto the Switch. The first game was ported to the Switch on the 24th of June, with Devil May Cry 2 releasing on the 19th of September. The 3rd game in the series has finally been announced for Nintendo’s hybrid console. Devil May Cry 3 will be releasing for the Switch on the 20th of February 2020.

Devil May Cry 3 originally released for the PlayStation 2 in 2005. Following its commercial and critical success, the game was re-released with a ‘Special Edition’ in 2006, featuring new content and gameplay changes. The game was seen as a return to form for the series, after Devil May Cry 2 was critically panned

The series has seen 6 entries in total, with the first three games now either announced or released on the Switch. The remaining games yet to be announced for the console are: Devil May Cry 4, DMC: Devil May Cry, and Devil May Cry V. Both Devil May Cry 4 and DMC: Devil May Cry were released on the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360, and so are more than capable of running on the Nintendo Switch.

While Devil May Cry 4 is likely to be announced for Switch, based on Capcom’s current trajectory with the console, DMC: Devil May Cry is perhaps more up in the air. The game was released in 2013, and was well received by critics. Fans of the series, however, disliked the game, due in part to its changing of the main character ‘Dante’. The game did see a remaster on the PS4 and Xbox One, so a release on the Switch isn’t out of the question.

Devil May Cry V only released this year, for the PS4, Xbox One, and PC, so a Switch conversion is less likely to happen. Capcom has yet to release a major current gen title onto the Switch, so it’ll be interesting to see if that ever changes.

Devil May Cry 3 Special Edition will be released on the 20th of February 2020 for $19.99 USD.

A good 8 years after the last title in the DMC series was released, has Capcom returned to glory with Devil May Cry 5?

Watch via our YouTube embed (below) or on YouTube directly at 2160p HERE

Devil May Cry is a pretty well-known series in Capcom’s roster behind Megaman, Street Fighter and Resident Evil, and you’d be hard pressed to find a gamer that doesn’t at least know of the series.

The Devil May Cry series is well known for it’s fast-paced and often intricate gameplay, and DMC5 is no different. During my first hour with the game I got to grips with Nero and his “Devil Hunter” style, and it’s somewhat reminiscent of his controls on DMC4. His unique feature was his devil arm and, *spoiler*, at the point I was playing he no longer has it, so our companion Nico makes him a new one called the “Devil Breaker”.

While it takes a while to get used to a lot of the mechanics, the game does give you an auto assist should button combinations become tricky. I would definitely say it's easy enough to play but difficult to master. The Devil May Cry Series has always focused on “stylish” gameplay, stringing together attacks in different ways gets you a better score, something which adds extra replay value for those who are intent on getting the highest ranks possible.

DMC 5 also features a photo mode if you feel like taking a screenshot of a cool moment or a beautiful backdrop which you can then share with the rest of the world.

The infamous Bloody Palace returns as a free update in April for those who like punishment. The Bloody Palace is a series of battles that take place over a ridiculous number of floors; DMC3 had 9999, just to give you an example of the sheer size of the mode. It’s unknown how many floors DMC5 will have.

Lastly, Capcom is also debuting a brand new feature called the “cameo system” which enables players to encounter other players and battle alongside one another in a new form of cooperative gameplay.

What you should know

Devil May Cry 5 was released on 8 March 2019 and is available on Steam, PS4 and Xbox One. Coming in two different versions, physical and digital, Standard and Deluxe edition, ranging from £44.99 for the former and £55.10 for the later according to the Steam page.

The Deluxe edition features 13 items including; Alternative announcers that can be used in-game, live-action cut scenes and additional Devil Breaker weapons.

In all it feels like a satisfying return to the series, I had a lot of fun playing it and seeing some of my favourite characters again. The mechanics feel familiar to me, and with the new auto-assist feature, it won’t alienate new players. I'm both excited and anxious for the release of the Bloody Palace, will you be tackling it?

KitGuru Says: Easy to play, difficult to master, it’s a resounding yes from us. A welcome addition to the DMC series!

While leaks had spoiled some of the surprise surrounding Capcom's Devil May Cry 5 E3 reveal, the game appearing on the Microsoft stage did catch us off guard. At the time, we were told to expect the game in ‘Spring 2019', but thanks to an investor meeting, we have a more narrow launch window.

Capcom's Investor Relations page put out a press release letting share holders know that Resident Evil 2 Remake and Devil May Cry 5 will be launching before the end of March 2019, making it out in time to cap off the fiscal year.

We already know that Resident Evil 2 will be launching on consoles and PC on the 25th of January. Devil May Cry 5 doesn't have a final release date yet, but from the looks of it, Capcom is aiming for late March.

With DMC 5, Capcom is returning to the series' roots after a brief hiatus following Ninja Theory's DmC reboot, which many hardcore fans had issues with.  We'll likely be seeing more of the game later this year, either at Gamescom in August, or during PSX in December.

KitGuru Says: I didn't really have any problems with the DmC reboot, but I'm still happy to see the series return to its roots, with the original director back in place. Are many of you looking forward to Devil May Cry 5?

Capcom has been quiet when it comes to Devil May Cry for a few years now. However, it looks like 2018 might be the year that the franchise gets thrown back into the spotlight. According to an apparent leak this week, Hideaki Itsuno, the director of DMC 2, 3, 4, has secretly been working on Devil May Cry 5, with a release date planned for sometime between November 2018 and ‘early 2019'.

The leak was posted over on Resetera. The post is lengthy and contains a lot of details surrounding production, the development team and even story elements. Whether or not this will all prove true remains to be seen but for now, let's jump in to what is being reported.

For starters, this game was initially planned to be unveiled at Sony's Playstation Experience (PSX) event in December. However, after receiving feedback on this year's E3 press conference, Sony has decided to hold some announcements back for E3 2018. Devil May Cry 5 is supposed to be one of those announcements.

The game has reportedly been in development for two years already, with the team currently entering the third year. This would mark the longest any DMC game has been in full production. However, there is a Playstation exclusivity deal going on behind the scenes. Apparently, the game will be exclusive to PS4 consoles, but a PC version will also come out at some point.

The reveal trailer for the game has been sitting around for months and is apparently 1 minute and 50 seconds in length. It is likely that we will see an updated version of this trailer, since the reveal was pushed back. This game is said to have the ‘longest cutscene runtime' of any DMC game, so it should have a fairly meaty story going on.

As far as gameplay is concerned, the post claims that Dante will be playable for sure, with Nero being a possibility. A third character may also be playable. Characters will switch during key story points in the game. Elsewhere, the post states that level design and exploration will be similar to Bayonetta with huge action set pieces, though this will be without the QTEs.

There apparently won't be a stamina bar at all, the dodging system has been reworked, the camera system has been reworked, boss fights are said to ramp up dramatically and finally, the style system will make a return.

KitGuru Says: This is an unverified leak, so it may not be entirely accurate. However, given how much time has passed since the controversial Devil May Cry reboot, it makes sense to bring the franchise back in 2018.
