Valve has announced that The International 2024, the biggest Dota 2 event of the year, will take place in Copenhagen, Denmark, in September. This announcement is great news for fans in Europe who have not had the opportunity to visit The International since its inaugural edition in 2011, when it was part of the Gamescom trade expo in Cologne, Germany.

The exact dates for the event are yet to be confirmed, but it is expected to begin in September, slightly earlier than in previous years. This could be the beginning of a shift to relocate the tournament back to late summer, as the event has typically been hosted in August.

The major event will take place in Copenhagen's Royal Arena, which has held several esports events in the past. The event will feature 16 teams, direct invitations, and open qualifications. After the Dota Pro Circuit, which previously determined qualifying teams, tournament invitations will revert to the original method, with Valve inviting the best teams from the year and organising open and closed qualifications for the remaining seats.

Valve has also stated that teams will be selected based on their performance at tournaments throughout the year, with some events carrying more weight than others. International events that require qualifications will be given more importance than invitation-only single-region tournaments, for example.

Valve recently filed a trademark for a brand new video game – Neon Prime. Recent rumours have pointed to this being a Dota spin-off with a sci-fi theme.

When the trademark first came to light, a former Valve employee revealed that the company had been working on a ship-building game inspired by FTL. It was later claimed that the game would be a Dota spin-off with a sci-fi theme. Interestingly, a new Neon Prime Twitter account has now been discovered but is currently inactive, indicating that Valve is preparing for a reveal. It is worth noting though that this account could have been made after the trademark became public, which means it could be a fan-run account or someone squatting on a potential username Valve would want to use.

Today, Dota 2's massive tournament, The International, will come to an end with a new world champion to be crowned. The final match is currently ongoing. Previously, Valve announced its card game, Artifact, at The International to poor reception. That game was ultimately scrapped entirely after failing to garner a big enough player base.

Given how poorly things went for Artifact, we are unsure if Valve would announce another new, non-sequel game at The International. Still, it'll be interesting to see if Gabe Newell has anything to say to close out the event later today.

The Steam Deck is a couple of months away from shipping out to customers and with this extra time, Valve will be going back to ensure its own games work well on the handheld system. Most notably, there will be updates to Dota 2 and CS:GO, Valve's two most-played multiplayer titles, as well as older single-player games like Half-Life.

Speaking with PCGamer this week, Valve explained that it is going back and updating its older games to play better on a gamepad. In the case of Dota 2, the game will be getting official controller support for the first time, as well as a new 4-player co-op mode. Currently, ‘experimental controller support' is available to all players of Dota 2, so you can give Valve feedback in the months leading up to the Steam Deck launch.

CS:GO will also be getting an update with better controller support, bringing a “renewed polish”. Valve previously added gamepad support to CS:GO when it launched the Steam Controller, but many of those elements have not been touched or updated in a long time, so we can expect some tweaks in time for the Steam Deck launch.

We can also expect updates for the Half-Life games, and possibly Left 4 Dead 2 as well. For Portal fans, both Portal 1 and 2 are already Steam Deck verified and ready to go.

KitGuru Says: MOBAs have worked pretty well with gamepads for a while now, so it is nice to see Dota 2 catching up in this area. My only concern would be the in-game menus, which were designed for larger displays like monitors, rather than a small handheld device.

We are less than two weeks away from the return of Dota 2's premier tournament, The International. Unfortunately, Valve's plans have hit a last minute roadblock, as a new surge of COVID-19 infections has forced the company to refund tickets.

Valve is pulling the plug on ticket sales for The International and is refunding everyone who already purchased tickets to attend the event. The International will still go ahead from the 12th to the 17th of October in Bucharest, but there will no longer be a live audience in attendance. As always though, the event will be livestreamed to the world through Steam, the Dota 2 client and other platforms like Twitch and YouTube.

“We wanted nothing more than to welcome fans live to the event, but we can no longer do so in a way that allows us to prioritise the health and well-being of both audience members and participants”, Valve said. “Those who purchased tickets will be issued a full refund automatically.”

Some Dota 2 teams have also been having their own complications due to COVID-19, with a handful of players getting infected in the weeks leading up to the tournament.

KitGuru Says: Holding massive live events still carries plenty of risk in 2021. Hopefully Valve has measures in place to ensure the teams still participating in the tournament remain safe and don't further spread the virus.

While Valve's massive Dota 2 championship tournament, The International, was originally due to take place in Sweden this year, continued COVID-19 restrictions meant that the event needed to find a new host country. After months of searching, Valve has revealed that The International 10 will be taking place in Romania this year.

The International 10 – Dota 2 Championships will be held at Arena Nationala, the largest stadium in Romania. Teams from around the world will fly in for the tournament's Group Stage, which runs from the 7th to the 10th of October. From that point, remaining matches will be played on the Main Stage from October 12th.

On the 17th of October, the last two teams standing will face off in the finals, competing for the largest share of the tournament's $40 million prize pool.

Valve has not yet announced any information on ticket sales, but details on that are supposed to “come shortly”.

KitGuru Says: I don't watch esports very often, but there has always been something exciting about The International. Will any of you be tuning in for this year's tournament?

In a surprise announcement last night, Valve announced that it has partnered with Netflix to produce an animated series based on DOTA 2. Not only that, but it is releasing next month.

Dota: Dragon's Blood comes to Netflix on the 25th of March and is the latest in a string of video-game IPs being adapted for TV on Netflix. The series will consist of eight episodes, telling the story of Davion, “a renowned Dragon Knight devoted to wiping the scourge from the face of the world”.

The series is being animated by Studio MIR, who previously worked on The Legend of Korra, Voltron: Legendary Defender, Young Justice and DC's animated version of The Death of Superman.

Studio MIR is also working on a spin-off animated series based on The Witcher titled ‘The Witcher: Nightmare of the Wolf'. That series is also due out sometime in 2020.

KitGuru Says: This isn't the first time Valve has experimented with cross-media. At one point, Team Fortress 2 was going to get an animated series on Adult Swim, but those plans were eventually scrapped. JJ Abrams has also publicly discussed plans for a Portal movie previously. This is the first one to actually make its way out though. Will many of you be watching this when it comes out?

This year would have been Valve’s tenth annual The International tournament for Dota 2 but unfortunately, the COVID-19 situation has not subsided, meaning the summer tournament has now been put on hold and may not happen this year at all.

“After extensive consideration of the global health emergency stemming from COVID-19, we have made the difficult choice to delay The International”, the announcement post reads. “We have been exploring various date possibilities, but it is likely that the event will need to happen in 2021. Given the highly volatile landscape for local gathering restrictions, virus trajectory, and global travel policies, we don’t expect to have enough confidence to communicate firm dates in the near future.”

The International will return at some point though, and Valve is already working on restructuring the DPC season for Autumn/Fall. Valve is also working on the next Battle Pass for Dota 2, confirming that 25% of the money made will go directly into the prize pool for The International.

The Battle Pass will be released sooner, rather than being held back in order to launch closer to the event. However, it will arrive a few weeks later than it usually does. Hopefully in a couple of months time, Valve will have another status update on when the next tournament will take place.

KitGuru Says: I’m not much of a Dota 2 player myself, but I do enjoy following The International each year. Hopefully tournament can be rearranged soon enough so teams and organisations can prepare.

An update for DOTA 2 has been released centred around improving the matchmaking system and focusing on fixing issues that arose from the previous patch, which was released in September.

DOTA 2 developer Valve understands that some players have been experiencing a significant drop in the quality of matchmaking. As a result of player feedback and match ID’s they received, Valve has released an update patch to resolve the issue.

“Your input has been very helpful and we hope you’ll continue to give us feedback after this update as well. We are committed to making matchmaking as good as it can be”, said Valve in the recent patch notes. Further to that, Valve published a list of other updates and fixes that the patch will address.

Due to the high frequency of matchmaking abuse, Valve has added a new rule to party matchmaking for Immortal ranks, which will reduce some of the negative behaviours that have become common at these ranks. Valve are also making changes regarding solo and party matchups – five-player parties will now only be matched against other five-player parties, regardless of any other matchmaking considerations. Any solo player will now only ever be matched against at most a party of two.

As a result of new features which were recently added, Valve found numerous bugs in the matchmaker’s evaluation that caused incorrect rank consideration. Those bugs have now been fixed and Valve expects to see a notable improvement. Various tuning has been done to Role Symmetry too, which should offer better performance. Medals have been reworked so it's back to five stars per medal rather than seven.

The previous DOTA 2 update included a wave of bans on users that were thought to be the most toxic and negative towards the community. However, those bans only affected a small percentage of players which valve wanted to extend with a more gradual system. Therefore, players with a behaviour score of less than 3000 are no longer able to use chart of voice communication until their score rises above the acceptable level.

These are just a few of the improvements the patch offers. A full list of the updates and fixes can be found on the official DOTA 2 news page.

KitGuru says: There are some noteworthy updates for DOTA 2, which should improve the matchmaking system and offer players a more pleasant experience when matched against others. What do you think about the new behaviour system updates and matchmaking improvements?

Earlier this year, Dota 2 received a huge boost in interest thanks to the ‘Auto Chess' mod, taking the known and loved heroes of the Dota universe and completely changing the gameplay. There were some rumours that Valve might hire the team behind the mod but instead, we'll be seeing Valve create its own standalone version of Dota Auto Chess.

As part of an announcement from the Dota team, Valve explains that earlier this year, it met up with the folks at Drodo Studio, who created the Auto Chess mod. There were some discussions about collaborating directly to turn Auto Chess into an official game mode. However, Drodo Studio has instead decided to make its own standalone Auto Chess game using original characters. However, Drodo did give Valve their blessing to create their own version of the Dota 2 mod.

So going forward, a group of Valve employees will be working on a standalone version of Dota Auto Chess. Recently, Valve did file a trademark for something called ‘Dota Underworld' and while no official announcement has been made, it seems likely that this will be the official version of Dota Auto Chess.

Valve has been working to expand on the Dota IP in the last year. Artifact is entirely based on Dota characters, items and lore, although the card game concept didn't really take off. Perhaps Auto Chess will be the next big push to expand the franchise.

KitGuru Says: While series like Portal, Half-Life and Left 4 Dead have been left behind lately, Valve has been doing a lot with Dota and it looks like there is still much more to come from that IP specifically. Do many of you still play Dota? Did you try the Auto Chess mod when it first came out?

Steam’s biggest user base keeps getting bigger ahead of its Chinese-specific application, with over 30 million accounts reportedly originating from the region. Despite this trend, China’s stagnated approach towards video game approvals continues to rage on, hurting indie developers the most.

Niko Partners analyst Daniel Ahmad credited Dota 2 for the initial foothold in China, before attributing much of the success to an increased interest in locally developed and localised video games. This has bolstered the variety of selection available to players purchasing locally, establishing a market built with regional pricing rather than continuously procuring internationally. This is a particularly notable feat given just how many titles remain blocked to the people of China.

This has paved way for a lucrative region-specific indie market, with locally-developed-games The Scroll of Taiwu and Chinese Parents only available in Simplified Chinese. The former, in fact, has sold over 600,000 units, while the latter is rapidly catching up having only recently achieved popularity.

Unfortunately, not all indie developers are prospering as the restructuring of the State Administration of Radio and Television continues to place new video game approvals on hold. Triple-A developer Tencent claimed that it had been hit hard by the stagnation, however Vicarious PR CEO Michael Brown told GamesIndustry.biz that the firm at least has the “financial power to ride this out,” unlike indie studios “who are going to be most hurt by this.”

“Smaller publishers and developers rely on quick development and release schedules to stay afloat, and that's not possible anymore,” he explains. “It's become a real issue for a lot of people, especially independent game developers within China. It's going to become a real problem for them because they're going to struggle now to release their games.”

While studios all around the world are suffering from the loss of one third of the global market, this hurts indie developers in China the most. Moving past the lack of “unlimited resources and legal power” found in a larger company, Chinese developers haven’t necessarily created their games with Western audiences in mind. This means that local indie developers are being forced to quickly adapt their games on-the-fly in order to survive in alternative markets.

Brown alleges that the worst case scenario could be a “direct threat to all that creativity and a $38 billion annual revenue industry,” however, China's State Council has issued guidelines to “make it easier (and not as lengthy) for internet cafes and game companies to set up business in the country.” According to the regulator, this “is a positive sign to see the promotion of new gaming entity creation amid a tough regulatory environment.”

In the meantime, Valve is preparing its new Steam China application in collaboration with local publisher Perfect World. This will be hosting the Shanghai-based Dota 2 International in 2019.

KitGuru Says: It’s great news that the Chinese user base is still climbing, however it feels too early to celebrate given the amount of chaos surrounding the video game industry as of late. Hopefully the State Administration of Radio and Television gets everything prepared for continued approvals in the near future.

Since launching in 2011, The International Dota 2 tournament has grown tremendously and is a core focus for Valve each year. The tournament has moved around a couple of times over the years, with the US, Canada and Germany all hosting the event. Next year, The International will be moving even further.

During the final day of this year's International, which took place in Vancouver, it was announced that the tournament will be hosted in Shanghai's Mercedez-Benz Arena next year. Shanghai's vice mayor, Weng Tiehui, posted a video announcing the move.

This will mark the first time that the tournament has been held outside of North America since 2012. The very first International took place in 2011 in Cologne, Germany, alongside Gamescom- Europe's largest gaming event.

Since then, The International has traditionally remained in Valve's hometown of Seattle, Washington. As GI.biz points out, this year's International moved to Vancouver while the usual Seattle venue underwent construction.

KitGuru Says: The International has moved around a few times over the years but China seems like the furthest move yet. Typically, Asia is a hotspot for esports, so this could end up being a solid move but it will also mean that some regular attendees may miss out next year.

Alongside the official launch of Steam TV catering to Valve’s $25 million Dota 2 tournament, fans of the MOBA got something they never knew they wanted so badly: a Gabe Newell Mega Kills announcer pack. The Valve CEO graces players with a deadpan delivery that perhaps rivals the comedic stylings of the Stanley Parable narrator, while still avoiding the number three.

Unveiled in the form of a sketch, the comedic skit shows Newell struggling to muster up any emotion in the delivery of his lines, including visible confusion when asked to announce a triple kill. This is, of course, in reference to the long-running joke that Valve has an aversion to the number 3, and the actual pack itself doesn’t fail to deliver with Newel stating “more than two kills, but less than four kills.”

As with the majority of announcer packs, there’s a good deal of comedy throughout. “Please email me at GabeN@valvesoftware.com and let me know about your rampage,” Newell says when the player hits 5 consecutive kills in a short timeframe. For some reason, he also wants to remind you he’s not wearing underwear and that “fundamentally, piracy is a service problem.”

The rest of Newell’s Mega Kills pack does a good job of quelling toxicity with its own encouraging lines, ending ‘first blood’ announcements with “thanks and have fun,” to “you were doing very well, I’m very proud of you” when you die. At one point, Newell simply interjects to say “you’re a beautiful person, with a charming personality.” The only exception is Newell stating that “the entire team was an ass, and we won’t be working with them again,” which is likely mocking player tendencies to blame everyone apart from themselves.

Those wanting access to Newell’s voice will have to buy Dota 2’s $10 Battle Pass, in which a quarter of each purchase goes towards the record breaking $25 million prize pool for The International. The tournament itself will run until August 25th, 2018, primarily broadcasting from Steam TV.

KitGuru Says: I’ll never forget how the Rick and Morty announcer pack introduced me to the popular Adult Swim show, even making me replace my beloved Stanley Parable narrator. If I were to get back into the game, I do think I’d give the Newell announcer a try. What do you think about Gabe’s long overdue Mega Kills pack?

We have another Steam scam coming to light this week. Just yesterday, we learned of a game that doubled as a cryptocurrency miner. Today, we are finding out about a game that is being used to scam people with fake Dota 2 items on the Steam marketplace.

A game called ‘Climber' launched on Steam recently and utilised rip-off versions of rare items from the Dota 2 marketplace. This led to fake versions of items like the ‘Dragonclaw Hook', which usually sells for hundreds of dollars on the Steam marketplace. The Climber version of the item looks exactly the same, both in image and description. The developers of Climber took things a step further, changing the game's icon to look exactly like the Dota 2 icon, making it easier to scam people in marketplace trades.

As sleuths on Reddit discovered, this isn't a first offence for the people behind Climber. The developer of the game goes by the name ‘Kirill_Killer34' and the publisher is listed as ‘The Team A'. Collectively, the pair has several games on Steam intended to take advantage of Valve's marketplace, and even the achievement system.

Valve is in the process of removing these games from Steam, with Climber being the first to get the axe. Valve will now need to look into ways to stop scams like this from taking place in the future.

KitGuru Says: Valve has a real problem on their hands because they easily allow these developers onto their store. Do you think that Valve needs to tighten up their developer review processes?

While Valve has removed loot boxes from Counter-Strike: Global Offensive in the Netherlands after the country’s conclusion that the practice is gambling, it looks like the developer is trialling a different method for Dota 2. Still in compliance with newly introduced laws, Dutch players will now be able to see what is in a loot box before buying it, making them more akin to a normal microtransaction.

Back in April, Valve received a letter from the The Netherlands Gaming Authority (NGA) demanding that the developer makes changes to loot boxes within CS:GO and Dota 2 due to both breaching the newly introduced Dutch Betting and Gaming Act. This resulted in item trading and Steam Marketplace functionality being removed from CS:GO in June, before Valve reintroduced both systems in July, instead removing loot boxes entirely. Dota 2, however, remained untouched until now.

Redditor Larhf notes the new changes in a post, stating that rewards can now be seen before the player purchases the loot box. Valve has also seemingly removed the ability to buy more than one loot box at a time, meaning players will have to buy the first loot box in order to see what is in the second. Of course, already seeing the item means that the traditional opening animation is also gone.

As it stands, Valve seems to be the only highlighted perpetrator making significant changes to its games in compliance with Dutch law, although EA and Psyonix have finally revealed pack odds and drop rates for FIFA 19 and Rocket League respectively. It’s uncertain whether or not this will suffice in the Netherlands, or Belgium for that matter and both countries are taking a strict stance against loot boxes.

KitGuru Says: The frustration of buying one at a time is sure to help dampen the road to potential addiction when purchasing loot boxes, even if Valve only implemented it in order to drive sales rather than showing its hand outright. Does this make loot boxes better in your eyes or do you still condemn the practice?

It’s safe to say that there’s a lot at stake during Dota 2’s biggest tournament, as The International pits teams against one another for parts of a $15 million prize pool. Unfortunately, Thunder Predator no longer has a shot at the winnings after one of its players was caught cheating in the qualifiers through the use of macros, resulting in a swift disqualification by Valve.

Macros are more common now than ever, enabling users to sequence a set of commands to the press of just one or two buttons, therefore streamlining the amount of effort it takes to execute a task. This can be used professionally while editing a photo, for example, or it can be used to give players an unfair advantage in-game.

In Dota 2, there are many heroes that require a lot of micromanagement where macros would come in useful, but few more so than Meepo – a Genomancer with the ability to create copies of himself that are each individually controlled. As Motherboard reports, Meepo was the choice of Thunder Predator player Atún in their third game against SG e-Sports.

Viewers of the match took to Reddit to complain about Atún’s unnatural ability to control the character in the heat of battle with unrivalled precision. For context, Meepo’s Poof ability allows the player to teleport one Meepo to another, often requiring a lot of back and forth depending on where the clones are scattered throughout the map.

Image: Atún from Liquipedia

Upon further investigation of Atún’s moves, the combat log used to record all inputs into Dota 2 showed that all of Meepo’s clones teleported at the exact same time, with the commands given at just a fraction of the time it would normally take to execute the move. This is impossible without the use of a hardware or software-based macro in place, to which the team has admitted.

“The player of our squadron ‘Atún’ has a Razer Synapse mouse, which, like any professional player, has put its own manual configuration to be able to have a better use of Hardware in benefit of its efficient performance in each of the games played with this hero (Meepo),” reads the translated Thunder Predator statement. Despite the concession, the team still asserts that it did nothing wrong as “no type of hack has been used.”

Razer Synapse is a software that allows for the customisation of macros on Razer mice, among other tweaks and adjustments from DPI to the lighting of RGB-enabled devices. This constitutes as a software-based macro. It will, however, likely be stored in the on-board memory of the mouse depending on the model, meaning it could similarly be seen as hardware-based.

Unfortunately, like most tournaments, macros are considered an illegal move in the competitive world. Qualifier organiser FACEIT could have stated this in a clearer manner, however its banning policy does outline that “all 3rd party software that is not allowed by the game publisher and that can give an unfair advantage to a player or team go under the cheating category.” Unfortunately for Thunder Predator, this has meant the team has been disqualified.

Interestingly, the South American team “denounces” the accusation despite outright admitting its wrongdoing, “affirming that at no time did our player ‘Atún’ use any type of hack or particular program that facilitated his game mode before the match, yesterday, with the SG team.”

KitGuru Says: I wonder what Thunder Predator thinks Razer Synapse is, if it doesn’t consider it a program that facilitates an unfair advantage. Despite joining the team just two months ago, Atún in particular has been playing tournaments since 2015, making it an even sillier thing to be disqualified on.

Loot boxes became the subject of controversy for the Dutch back in April, as The Netherlands Gaming Authority found that some games did breach gambling laws. The country gave developers until today to alter game designs or face prosecution, forcing Valve to make some changes to its Marketplace.

It’s fair to say that Valve helped pioneer cosmetic practices as they are today, with Counter-Strike: Global Offensive and Dota 2 becoming staple titles for the trading and selling of skins across the Steam Marketplace. As of today, Dutch players of either title will no longer be able to access these features as a result of threats from authorities in the Netherlands.

The Gaming Authority, known as the Kansspelautoriteit, didn’t give Valve much direction on how to change its practices aside from the vague statement that “loot boxes contravene the law if the in-game goods from the loot boxes are transferable.”

Given that the Kansspelautoriteit’s outlook is different to that of other countries, Valve has isolated the changes to the Netherlands, apologising to players for the inconvenience. The company is still attempting to engage with the Kansspelautoriteit so that “they may refine their legal demands” and Valve can “find a solution that is less inconvenient.”

Image: Redditor NasCS

As of today, June 20th, the Gaming Authority has announced that it will be checking in with perpetrators of its initial verdict to see if developers are now compliant with Dutch law. The Kansspelautoriteit avoided mentioning names, however it is believed that EA, Psyonix and PUBG Corp will all be under review thanks to loot boxes within FIFA 18, Rocket League and PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds respectively.

Those found guilty of breaching Dutch gambling laws will find themselves at risk of a fine up to €830,000, or alternatively 10 percent of the company’s earnings. “If administrative enforcement does not prove effective, the Gaming Authority can appeal to the Public Prosecution Service to prosecute criminal proceedings,” reads the press release.

The crusade against loot boxes originated from worries over how systems akin to gambling could shape the minds of participants who would otherwise be underage to participate in actual gambling. “There are indications that loot boxes encourage gambling addiction,” explains the Kansspelautoriteit.

“There is consensus worldwide that gambling cannot be played by minors. An adjustment that providers could make is replacing the loot boxes in their game with ‘direct buy': virtual items that are known in advance can then be purchased.”

Currently, the Netherlands is the first country to impose strict legal action against perpetrators following its refined definition of loot boxes, while other countries such as Belgium and individual US states are still discussing the growing concerns. Worldwide consensus is otherwise divided on how clearly loot boxes pertain to gambling, however, with the UK standing by the practice.

KitGuru Says: While I feel for Dutch players who will now be missing out on features the rest of the world has access to, it’s important for the Netherlands to set a precedence against a practice it firmly believes is wrong. How do you feel about loot boxes? Do you think they are a form of gambling?

Dota 2 has been a great success for Valve over the years and its position as a free to play game has surely helped with that. With that in mind, it is big news that after all of these years, Valve has decided to implement a new subscription for the game, dubbed ‘Dota Plus', which will replace the tournament Battle Pass going forward.

Dota Plus is an evolution of the Majors Battle Pass, and will grant subscribers access to new daily/weekly challenges, cosmetics, special themed items, and more. Perhaps most crucially, the Dota Plus subscription grants access to the Plus Assistant, an in-game tool that will offer hero, item and ability suggestions to help players improve their game. The Plus Assistant analyses all past Dota 2 matches and can help make suggestions based on tactics that have worked well in the past.

Dota Plus subscribers will also have access to additional data, including a ‘death summary', which provides a second by second timeline of damage received, and a ‘lane strategy' display, which can offer team-wide suggestions for how to fill out the map.

Post game analytics will give players the chance to see an overview of full-game performance, including damage breakdowns, and how each hero affected the game.

The Dota Plus subscription will cost $3.99 per month, though there is a six month subscription option for $22.5 and a yearly option for $42. You'll be able to buy time blocks for Dota Plus so that you don't need to worry about recurring subscription fees too.

Discuss on our Facebook page, HERE.

KitGuru Says: If you are a serious, competitive Dota 2 player, then the additional data Plus subscribers gain access to seems quite valuable. Do many of you regularly play Dota 2? What do you think of the new Plus subscription?

Dota 2’s lead developer IceFrog announced that the Valve title will be changing up how it dishes out its updates, moving from larger incremental updates throughout the year to a bi-weekly approach containing smaller patches. Before the new system is put in place, however, Valve’s last supersized patch landed in the form The Spring Cleaning 2018 update, containing “bug fixes and quality-of-life improvements.”

“We want to try taking a different approach to how gameplay patches are released,” tweeted out IceFrog. “Instead of big patches a couple of times a year, we’ll be releasing small patches every 2 weeks on Thursdays. We’ll be trying this out for about six months and then reevaluating.”

This approach is catered for the longevity of the title, particularly in the competitive scene in which balance is imperative. Players are used to the changing of heroes, items and tweaks to the map in-game, but no matter where they are on the skill spectrum, they will now have to keep on their toes as to what changes have hit every two weeks.

“To make it easier to keep track of changes, we’ll also be releasing a new in-game feature to notify you of any recent changes to heroes in your match,” explained IceFrog in a follow-up tweet.

For now, however, players will have to adjust to the changes included within The Spring Cleaning 2018 update, which brings with it a redesigned player profile page and a list of changes per hero even during the drafting stage as well as taking a page out of Overwatch’s book by letting those that queue train by hitting creeps in the meantime.

Further improvements have been made to the design of the UI when in a match, with a new icon revealing the stage at which a teammate’s teleportation is on cooldown alongside effects on the battlefield as towers will display an increasingly weathered look the lower their health gets.

Perhaps the most exciting change of all, however, comes in the form of a whole new ban category specifically tailored for those who display a regularity to their toxic behaviour. Spring Cleaning is really taking out the trash as those that are frequent offenders will see themselves hit by the ban hammer with an automatic six months in the lowest of low priority pool.

All of the changes are detailed on the page itself, with the new two-weekly schedule expected to begin soon.

KitGuru Says: I am interested to see how this will affect the competitive scene, as pro players will need to constantly adapt their strategies in order to remain ahead. The previous model saw updates land after the finale of bigger competitions, giving an entire season for players to adjust, but now, it’s anyone’s game. How do you feel about Valve being more hands on with Dota 2?

Dota 2 has reworked its Ranked rewards scheme, bringing in Seasonal Rank Medals to replace its renown matchmaking rating (MMR) system. This new system is now live, as Valve kicked off the game’s six-month Ranked Season yesterday.

The news was revealed over on Dota 2’s official blog, attempting to reward player’s skill levels based on “highest performance level for the current season,” rather than what the player ends the season on. “A Seasonal Rank Medal never decreases in rank once you’ve achieved it. Initial calibration games will be seeded roughly based on your previous skill.”

The ranks are split across seven different categories, Herald, Guardian, Crusader, Archon, Legend, Ancient, and Divine, each with five stars of progression before reaching the next tier, including a sixth ‘0 star’. These medals will be visible to all players before, during and after Ranked matches, being retired at the end of each season.

Ranks are still split between Party and Solo games, with the latter yielding more rewards given its harder nature.

“Your performance in both Party and Solo games is considered when evaluating your skill and determining when your Medal gets upgraded, with Solo games having a bigger impact. In order for players to achieve either the Ancient or Divine Medals, only Solo-game performance is considered.

“This update also expands the Leaderboard system to include many more players. Players with 5 stars on the Divine Rank Medal (the highest rank) will now have a leaderboard number listed with the medal that broadcasts their position amongst other players. This leaderboard position will always be displayed alongside the Medal, and will be visible to all players in the game and on your profile.”

KitGuru Says: Highest achieved is a system that Rainbow Six Siege switched to in its first year in an attempt to get players to continue playing the game, as many were abandoning it to preserve their current high ranks. Despite Solo being inherently harder, I do find it odd that it would fragment the two highest Medals into the one category as it dissuades team play. Would it not be better to have separate medals entirely for each category? What do you think of the new system?

It's been a heartbreaking slew of what-could-have-beens concerning Valve lately, with Half-Life's lead writer having revealed his plot behind Half-Life 2: Episode 3 just last month. Now, artwork from former employee Drew Wolf suggests that fans might have missed out on a four-player co-op fantasy game.

Wolf released details on his website concerning an “Untitled Fantasy Game” that was an Internal R&D project. “The project was a fantasy adventure game centered around cooperative combat and driven by story.” Despite not directly stating that these concepts and ideas were for Valve, Wolf is not known to have worked anywhere else and the key word is that it “was” a game.

“The goal was to present as many groups of four adventures as possible in order to establish a diverse cast of archetypal characters. After discussion and feedback the group was paired down to ten characters. They would become the project's main characters.”

Wolf is particularly notable for crafting the visual style for Dota in his 9-year stint at Valve, to which this new artwork shares much in common with. I personally find that Dota characters are quite rich with fantasy lore that isn't explicitly stated in the game itself, so it's a shame to see a potential story-driven game with similarly colourful characters not come to light.

KitGuru Says: I do love Wolf's art style, finding that he has quite the knack in threading such unique and unusual characters into fitting together seamlessly. I look forward to seeing what projects he is working on in the future. What do you think about this missed opportunity?

It seems that Player Unknown’s Battlegrounds is only going to keep growing as over the weekend, the game managed to take the number one spot on Steam. For a long time now, Dota 2 has managed to retain the most concurrent players of any game on Steam but that changed this weekend, with PUBG overtaking it for the first time.

Just three weeks ago, PUBG surprised us by taking the number two spot on Steam’s player list, overtaking Counter Strike: Global Offensive. At its peak, PUBG managed to retain 876,849 players all at the same time, which incidentally took a toll on servers and caused issues for some players. By contrast, Dota 2 has 842,919 players at its peak two days ago.

With Dota 2 being a highly rated free to play game, it almost seemed like nothing would be able to top it. However, despite its price tag, PUBG managed to do it. This comes off of the developers announcing that they had sold over 8 million copies, so clearly, the game’s player base is only going to get bigger.

The game will have the chance to rack up even more sales towards the end of this year too. Not only will it be leaving Early Access but it will also be launching on Xbox One, granting access to the console market.

KitGuru Says: PUBG is a fun game for sure, I tend to play at least a few rounds each weekend. Still, it amazes me how quickly this game took off.

If you thought The International 2016 was elaborate, with its huge prize pool and millions of viewers, it now has some competition. A Chinese company is running a contest that will see the top four teams in the world compete for the Nanyang Cruise Cup, a $50,000 tournament that will take place aboard a cruise ship, passing by China, Japan and South Korea.

The idea behind the cup, we're told, was to blend Esports viewing with tourism, to give live viewers aboard the 2,678 capacity vessel, a chance to watch high-level DotA 2 play up close, while also visiting cities like Shanghai, China, Jeju in South Korea and Fukuoka in Japan. The organisers hope this could encourage younger people to go on cruise holidays.

Put on by Chinese production firm, KeyTV, the tournament will rent a satellite specifically to give clear and fast internet access to the players on the ship and to show the world at large their streams without interruption. They will be made up of International 2016 winners Wings Gaming, who have already accepted their invitation. JoinDotA reports that Newbee have also accepted.

The following two teams will be decided by qualifier matches in the coming week.

The ship itself is not barebones though. Alongside the live DotA tournament, those who do buy tickets for the cruise will also be able to enjoy the ship's nightclub, casino, indoor and outdoor swimming pools and a number of different restaurants.

The tournament will begin on 13th October, lasting for four days while doing the round trip between East-Asian countries. If it goes well, KeyTV plans to run another, larger tournament in 2017.

Discuss on our Facebook page, HERE.

It looks like the official Dota 2 forum has been targeted by hackers as the site was apparently breached last month, with nearly two million user records accessed, which include email addresses, passwords, IP addresses and usernames.

News of the leak first appeared on Leaked Source, a site that gives users the ability to find whether their data is available online or not. According to the site, passwords for the forum were stored using MD5 hashing, which isn’t particularly effective by today’s standards. Apparently, more than 80 percent of the stolen passwords could be converted to plain text, so users of the Dota 2 forum should change passwords on other important accounts if they use the same password across multiple sites.

According to the current statistics, 1,086,139 of the Dota 2 forum accounts affected were tied to a Gmail address. Meanwhile, 173,184 Hotmail users were affected, 44,706 Yahoo mail users were affected and just over 24,000 Outlook users were affected.

You can see the full list on the site itself and read a little bit about the hack. The breach apparently took place on the 10th of July but so far, Valve has yet to comment on it, or warn users to change passwords.

KitGuru Says: Valve had a bit of a security blunder on Christmas day last year but hopefully it has learned since then and will send emails to affected users of the Dota 2 forums and force password changes. After all, online security has become an increasingly important topic in recent years.

With The International 2016 kicking off in just a few days' time, Valve has released its promised virtual reality spectator mode for DotA 2. That means if you have a VR headset you can watch the action with others, with an interactive, zoomable map and giant display complete with commentary and highlights.

The DotA 2 VR Hub is entirely free for anyone with a headset to try out the mode, which lets you watch live matches or replays of your choice, with friends or alone, surrounded by the very heroes you're watching battle it out.

Within the hub is an interactive minimap, showing you a summary of all of the action ongoing, as well as a big screen giving you a much better look at individual points of play. Perhaps the most exciting aspect of it though is the ability to place yourself within the game world itself and stand at head-height to see all of the abilities and blows from up close.

dota2vr

The statues of heroes aren't quite as active just yet, standing passively as you stare at them from probably far too close a vantage point, but animations and a bit of life is something we expect to see added in the future.

One area that is likely to see a lot of interest though is masks. These digital items are used to differentiate users in virtual reality and much like the hats Valve has made so popular in other games and experiences, masks are expected to be a major focus of player interest in the coming months (thanks Ars).

One downside to the whole thing is that right now there is a big bank of fog which really reduces draw distance, which is designed to help the pretty title run smoothly in VR, supposedly. Presumably some PCs could handle seeing the full match fine, but for now if you pop into first person mode within the map itself, you won't be able to see everything.

If you want to try it out yourself, download the VR DLC from the DotA 2 library page in Steam and launch it up with Steam VR powered on and your headset strapped to your noggin.

KitGuru Says: This seems like a pretty excellent idea and is certainly something that a lot of real sports should be employing too.

If there's one aspect of virtual reality that most people don't care about, it's how they look while they're doing it; we all know we look stupid with one of them on. However if you are worried and want to show your allegiance to DotA 2, you can now buy a special edition headset with an International 2017 headstrap for good measure.

The HTC Vive in the special edition is very much just a standard Vive. It's the best VR headset you can buy right now, with a resolution of 2,160 x 1,200 pixels spread across two OLED displays, a 110 degree field of view, 90Hz refresh rate, motion tracked controllers and a room-scale laser tracking system.

It's fantastic, but don' think you're buying anything but the standard headset with a red strap and some DotA 2 branding. That's why (fortunately) it's priced at the standard $800 (£609), so you don't need to spend any more to get yourself the unique head-strap design.

As much as this is just a vanity purchase though, you have to imagine that an aftermarket strap retailer would potentially to quite well in the burgeoning VR scene. Currently there is no commercial way to really customise what your VR headset looks like.

Considering straps wouldn't be too expensive (the price didn't change at all adding this one) I'd like to see some other options out there.

KitGuru Says: Vive skins for the headset too should be possible as well – as long as they avoid blocking all of those infrared detectors.

As much as playing games in virtual reality might be wonderfully fun and immersive, VR might actually be a great place to watch games too. In a recent teaser trailer for Valve's theatre mode for the HTC Vive, it also showed off a spectator mode for DotA 2, which has you watching a stream, with an interactive map and models of all of the participants lined up alongside.

dota2spectator

This is intriguing because it shows that the viewer in VR has a lot more information to hand. By having an entire virtual environment dedicated to the game, there's room for an interactive minimap bigger than most desks, details on individual characters in big, thematic fashion – all within a dark and foreboding environment.

Skip forward to 30 seconds in, for the VR spectator mode:

Towards the end of the short clip, we even see our ‘VR viewer' open up statistics for experience and gold gathering throughout the game, showing how each team has fared over the course of it (Thanks EG).

Of course for the uber lazy sportsfan, VR viewing is going to a lot more active than your average viewing party and may not be exactly what you're after, but if you don't mind turning your head to view extra information, then this is certainly a spectator mode you should get behind.

While Valve's brief paid mods stint with Skyrim didn't last long, Valve hasn't given up on coming up with ways to support custom content creators. Today, Valve announced the ‘Custom Game Pass' for Dota 2, which will allow those who enjoy custom game modes to support the creators directly.

Custom Game Passes will be limited to a small number of custom game modes that have proven themselves to the community. The pass will give you access to additional features for that game too though extra details on what these features would be aren't included in the announcement.

dota-2-585x343

When Valve tried paid mods with Skyrim, we saw some previously free mods put behind a paywall all of a sudden, which was a major point of contention for many. However, with Dota 2, all custom game modes will remain free to download and play, with the option of supporting the creator directly added in.

“The first Custom Game Pass will be available for Roshpit Champions at a price of $1 for a 30-day duration. While everyone can play Roshpit Champions for free, the Custom Game Pass will enable additional stash and character slots, and offer multiple perks for the duration of the pass.”

KitGuru Says: Valve's custom game pass sounds like a better approach than the original paid mods situation. What do you guys think of Valve's latest attempt?

In traditional sports, there's an unspoken rule that what goes on in the gym, stays in the gym. The same goes for professional Esports teams, especially when it comes to friendly scrimmages among them. So it's perhaps no surprise that Cloud9 DotA 2 player, Ravi “Ritsu” Kodippili has been kicked out for leaking scrimmage data to other teams.

The idea of a scrimmage is to allow professional teams to test the waters of any strategies they've been working on before big tournaments and Season starts. Consider it like hiring sparring partners, except instead of it being non-competitors you're testing your mettle against, its the very same people you may end up playing once the tournament starts for real.

Although there is nothing strictly illegal about telling others about what happened in the games, there is a rather strict gentleman's code against it. There is also a big difference between discussing the match up, and conspiring to use the information to help other teams beat your recent scrimmage opponents when it comes to the real deal.

In the case of Ritsu, he was a member of a Skype group which would occasionally post team composition, champion selection choice and other aspects of teams they had played against. In this case, it was North American team Digital Chaos, who like Cloud9, would be hoping to make it to the upcoming tournament The Summit 4. Clearly Ritsu hoped to avoid that outcome, so now he's been kicked off of the team.

Although no mention is made of these actions within the Cloud9 release – something a lot of Esports teams are wont to do – they did state that the “indiscretions of his past,” were to blame (as per Kotaku). The manager of the team, Danan Flander also said in the statement that it was Ritsu's behaviour”out-of-game” that was unbecoming of a professional player.

Ritsu's comment to the public merely stated that while he was sad to go, he understood why Cloud9 had reacted the way it did.

Discuss on our Facebook page, HERE.

KitGuru Says: This can't be great news for Ritsu's career. Other teams may not want to take him on now, for fear that others won't scrimmage knowing he's on board. Do you guys think this end's his short career as an Esports player?

Some new information regarding the ever elusive Half-Life 3 has been found in a file within the latest update to Dota 2. Steam Database came across several new files, including one titled ‘hl3.txt', along with a few other out of place text files, which detail RPG style quest mechanics, virtual reality support, NPC followers and something involving a zipline.

Not every reference in the text file is brand new. Some things are references also found within the Source 1 engine, such as the spawn point generator, which can be found in Left 4 Dead. However, this does mean that Valve might be in the process of porting old tech in to Source 2.

hl2

As far as new stuff goes, there are references to a new quest system, which includes dialogue, goals and NPCs including hunters, citizens and ceiling turrets. In the hl3.txt file, we can see that quest citizen is neutral to combines and won't be hurt by their weapons. This potentially suggests that RPG elements were being incorporated in to a Half-Life game, likely Half-Life 3 given the name of the text file. There are some definitions involving virtual reality support, the patented ‘Chaperone' system, a movement system and a sequence involving Ziplines.

There are two other text files in the update worth talking about, one called ‘rpg.txt' and another called ‘lights.txt'. In the RPG file, we find role playing elements defined in Source 2, such as item stats, item pickups, NPC followers, ect. In the lighting text file, you will find definitions for lighting characteristics, with one reference to a “realistic day/night cycle”.

All of the files are linked in this post if you would like to see them for yourself. None of this really confirms anything, but it does offer a small insight in to what Valve is working on right now.

Discuss on our Facebook page, HERE.

KitGuru Says: With the HTC Vive coming up next year, it would make sense for Valve to have at least one killer title lined up to help sell the headset and show off how great VR can be. These text files don't confirm much but it does show that Valve seems to be experimenting with RPG mechanics for projects using the Source 2 engine.

It seems like an odd question, asking whether one of the bigger updates to one of the most popular games in the world would make you stop playing. The recent Reborn update to DotA 2 improved performance, added the level systems, fixed a number of crashes and bugs and added the new treasury. But despite all of that, since the Reborn update, DotA 2 has lost 16 per cent of its player base, so some of you must have jumped ship when the patch landed.

That accounts for almost 100,000 active players, with Steamcharts tracking just shy of 607,000 players regularly duking it out in August, versus just 511,000 in September. Peak player numbers were down too, with 889,000 today, versus 934,000 last month. This continues an overall decline in player numbers from earlier in the year. DotA 2 reached its peak back in February, with nearly 630,000 players on average and a peak of more than 1.2 million.

reborn

As Kotaku points out, this latest dip may just be because of people going back to school, or coming back from holidays and knuckling back down at work, as September 2014 saw a similar slide – though much smaller – and 2013 had a drop in September too.

However it could truly be because Reborn hasn't been that well received. A lot of players have reported bugs and problems with the new client and have even suggested that player inputs haven't been as simple since it was patched in.
