It has been a while since Valve last released a game, and even longer since the company started a new IP. While it initially looked like an upcoming game called Neon Prime would be a totally new series from Valve, a recent report claims it will be set in the Dota universe.

According to Tyler McVicker (formerly Valve News Network), Neon Prime is ‘likely' a DOTA spin-off with a sci-fi spin. The sci-fi part lines up with what we previously heard about the game. When the trademark first came out, a former Valve employee revealed that the company had been working on a ship-building game inspired by FTL.

While the game may be related to DOTA, it will take place in different dimensions, and won't feature FPS gameplay. Unfortunately, that is all the information that is out there for now.

With Valve's trademark becoming public, it should only be a matter of time before the game gets announced. With that said, this is still Valve, and they typically are unafraid to drop projects at a moment's notice.

KitGuru Says: Dota is Valve's big money maker but the company has already had two unsuccessful spin-off attempts with Artifact and Underworlds. Both games had fans, but ultimately, they were scrapped after release. Whatever Neon Prime ends up being, hopefully, Valve actually sticks with it for the long haul.

Last week, we learned that Valve was making changes to Steam in an effort to crack down on developers abusing the store’s ‘upcoming releases’ list. Now this week, the Steam team’s attention is turning towards the community workshop, where CS:GO, Dota 2 and Team Fortress 2 items will now need to go through an approval process.

Valve will now require workshop creators to have their workshop items approved before they can be downloaded. Initially, it was believed that this change would affect all games on Steam but it turns out that Valve is only targeting its own first-party games, in an effort to reduce the number of creators claiming to offer free skins for workshop subscriptions.

Currently, Valve is aiming for a turnaround time of ‘less than a day’ when it comes to item approvals, although if you have ever dealt with Steam Support, then you’ll know that the timetable can slip.

Updates to workshop listed items will also need approval from Valve, although the older listing will still be available in the meantime.

KitGuru Says: It will never cease to amaze me how massive the in-game skins business has become over the last five years. Now that Valve is requiring approvals for workshop content, it will be interesting to see if there are other areas of Steam where Valve takes back control.

Last night, Valve’s annual Dota 2 tournament, ‘The International’, kicked off and it seems the studio had something rather special to show off- a brand new game. It’s called Artifact: The Dota card game and unfortunately, it doesn’t seem to be quite what the audience wanted as the initial reaction has been heavily mixed.

Valve is following in the footsteps of Blizzard and Bethesda by releasing its own digital collectible card game based on a famous franchise. Blizzard’s Hearthstone is based on Warcraft, Bethesda’s Elder Scrolls Legends is self explanatory and Valve’s Artifact is based on the Dota universe.

Twitter user @nickisnixed was in the audience recording a video when the teaser trailer for Artifact debuted and while there are some cheers in the crowd, you can definitely hear more than a few disappointed reactions. The YouTube trailer’s like to dislike ratio is also heavily negative and as you can imagine, the comments aren’t particularly favourable either.

At the time of writing, Valve hasn’t actually revealed much about Artifact outside of the short 15 second teaser trailer. We do know that former Double Fine developer, Brad Muir, has been working on the project. Day9, who is hosting at The International this year, also provided some gameplay details, stating that there will be ‘three game boards’ to represent lanes, you can have five heroes in play at once like in Dota and there are creeps that spawn at each turn.

Players can equip item cards on to heroes, play creature cards, activate special hero abilities and leave persistent effects on each lane. In truth, it sounds absolutely nothing like Hearthstone but because Valve hasn’t released any gameplay details itself, the audience reaction at large has been to simply assume that this will be like Hearthstone.

Artifact will be releasing at some point in 2018. Hopefully Valve will have more details to share with us soon.

KitGuru Says: I’m a big fan of card games, so I’m actually pretty excited for this. However, I do understand why some fans may be disappointed. After all, card games aren’t for everyone and a lot of people already feel burnt out on them with Hearthstone and now Elder Scrolls Legends. Do you guys think Valve missed the mark with this?

A small village located in the Philippines is no longer allowing residents to play the original Dota mod for Warcraft III, following two deadly stabbings and other violent incidents. The original Dota mod is still popular in the Philippines today despite the launches of successors like Dota 2 and its closest competitor, League of Legends.

The news was originally reported by Inquirer.net, the village of Salawag had opted for an outright Dota ban after government officials conversed with internet cafe owners and decided that the game was making people too violent towards eachother.

Kotaku picked up on this story earlier today and managed to get a quote from a Filipino reader, who noted that many players can be really “intense” when it comes to Dota matches in public computer cafes.

Two teenagers were stabbed to death over a fight that stemmed from playing the game. The most recent incident occurred in November last year.

KitGuru Says: Even on newer MOBA games like Dota 2 or League of Legends, the community can be pretty unforgiving and often rude, its just a shame to see some players take things so far and resorting to violence.

It should be no secret to game developers, that a great community around a game can make a huge difference. Games with vibrant and active modding and competitive e-sport communities, generally do pretty well. In the case of Dota 2 that is proven by the fact that its player base, so far, contributed many, many millions to the prize pools for professional tournaments.

This is an amazing feat for Dota 2 fans and Valve, the developer. It shows just how much the game is benefiting from the community, and how much that in turn gains from the game. Along with this Dota 2 also benefits from the modding community with player made cosmetic items purchasable from the in-game store. This isn't even factoring in all of the players who both indirectly and directly benefited from Dota 2's success.

While Valve is hardly the first or the only studio to involve their community in the games they release, it definitely seems to be one of the most successful, as the numbers above prove. Its other main franchises: Team Fortress, Counter Strike: Global Offensive and Half-Life also have huge modding communities, with the former two titles originally having been released as mods for the first Half-Life.

compendium
This was a big contributor to that prize money record

While this model obviously isn't going to work for all games, hopefully some other studios will be able to follow the example set here by Valve and create great communities around their games, with deep integration, so that the game can benefit from the community and vice versa.

KitGuru Says: While I would love to see other game studios work with those that buy and play their games to the same extent that Valve does, I won't be holding my breath. There are a few reasons for this, but mainly because building a community such as Dota 2's takes a long time. Who knows, maybe there are some great game studio communities out there that rival Valve, but it's hard to think of many. Any suggestions?

With the impending release of Wreck-It Ralph next year, it looks like Hollywood is beginning to consider video games a part of our culture that's worth talking about. First we had Seth Rogen who said he was looking to write a movie about the Sega vs Nintendo years and now we have Valve registering up domain names that suggest it has plans for a few video game features too.

Reddit was of course, first on the scene when it came to the new Valve domains, claiming that it was the company's IT Manager Chris Grinstead, who was behind the registrations of FreeToPlayTheMovie.com, AheadOfTheGameMovie.com and AheadOfTheGameTheMovie.com. Currently there is absolutely nothing to see at these domains so I won't even bother linking them – they literally resolve to nothing.

Wreck it Ralph
Wreck it Ralph has been out in the US for over a month but won't show up here until next year

However, this does let us speculate and get the old rumour mill turning. It's also pretty exciting as movies about games are few and far between. Most take the in-game universe and make it a reality, so even when we get  Mortal Kombat (who isn't playing the theme in their head right now?) or Tomb Raider, games themselves are never mentioned. That's probably why documentaries like King of Kong are so beloved, because they're actually about gaming.

It sounds like Valve's potential movies will be about the gaming aspect too, though whether we're looking at fictional characters for these, or documentaries remains to be seen. The latter would make the most sense since the Half Life developer has already released a twenty minute documentary on the subject of competitive gaming in DOTA 2.

KitGuru Says: Does anyone have a favourite video game movie that actually involves video games? There aren't that many out there. You could argue the latest Tron movie would fit into that category, but you might have to go back to The Wizard for a second choice.
