GOG has made a name for itself by offering DRM-free PC games, including some major AAA titles from third-party studios, as well as DRM-free day-one releases from CD Projekt Red, like The Witcher 3 and Cyberpunk 2077. Looking ahead to the future, GOG is looking to expand by offering its games via the cloud too.

GOG has announced a new partnership with Amazon to bring its games to the Luna cloud gaming service. Luna first launched in the US in 2022, before reaching the UK and other major European countries in 2023. Luna uses Amazon Web Services, one of the largest cloud service offerings in the world, to stream games to customers through the internet, to multiple devices like smartphones, PCs, tablets and Smart TVs. Users can connect an Xbox or PlayStation controller, or stick to the trusty mouse and keyboard to play games.

CD Projekt Group, owners of GOG and CD Projekt Red, have previously supported cloud gaming services. CD Projekt Red was an early supporter of Google Stadia prior to its shutdown, and games like Cyberpunk 2077 and The Witcher 3 have been available through GeForce Now for quite a while already.

This new cloud partnership with Amazon Luna won't remove the DRM-free part of GOG's games. Through Luna, you'll be able to play every game that you already own through GOG and there will be no second purchase required. In fact, if you buy a GOG game through Luna, you will also get access to the direct-download version on GOG.

There is no exact date for when GOG games will go live on Luna, but we should start to see the first games made available soon. GOG has already confirmed that The Witcher series and Cyberpunk 2077 will be coming, which is a strong start.

Late last year, GOG announced that Sony Santa Monica’s critically acclaimed God of War would be available to purchase on their store free of any DRM. Finally after a couple month’s wait, God of War is available on GOG with a hefty 50% off launch discount.

Making the announcement on their blog, the GOG team said “The moment we’ve all been waiting for – prepare to don the mantle of Kratos in the critically acclaimed masterpiece, God of War, now available DRM-free! You can get it with a 50% launch discount until March 28th, 11 PM UTC.”

God of War first came to PC via Steam back in January of 2022, so it's taken a little over two years for GOG to finally get their hands on the game.

That said, the wait is certainly worth it, as owning a DRM-free copy of the game is the only way to truly OWN your games – an especially important thing to note in today’s increasingly digital industry.

God of War is available right now on GOG for £20.04 – just a couple pennies higher than the game’s lowest price since its Steam release, so now is as good a time as any to take on the Norse gods.

Today GOG has announced that God of War and Uncharted: Legacy of Thieves Collection will be available on its store. These versions will be free of any DRM, so you can download it directly and install it the old-fashioned way, or you could use the GOG Galaxy client.

Currently, GOG is holding a Halloween sale but you'll find more than horror games discounted. Currently, Horizon Zero Dawn: Complete Edition is 67% off, bringing the price down to £13.19, as is Days Gone. You'll find discounts on thousands of other games as well until the 1st of November, including Cyberpunk 2077.

If you'd like a free game, then currently GOG is giving away The Whisperer, a point & click game set in Canada during the beginning of the 19th century.

The Yakuza games have become very popular in the west over the last few years. Once considered a cult classic, the series now has a huge global fan base but it can be intimidating for a newcomer to jump in. If you want to pick up all the games in one place at a pretty big discount, then you'll want to hit up GOG.

The Yakuza games are now officially available DRM-free on PC through GOG. To celebrate the occasion, you can pick up the Yakuza Complete Series collection on GOG at a 70% discount, bringing the price down to just £27.19.

The collection includes seven Yakuza games focusing on the Kiryu saga. You'll get Yakuza 0, Yakuza Kiwami 1 & 2 (these are remakes of the original two games), as well as the Remastered versions of Yakuza 3, 4 and 5. Finally, the collection also includes Yakuza 6: The Song of Life, which was the last game starring Kiryu as the main character.

The collection does not include Yakuza 7: Like a Dragon, which stars a whole new cast of characters and switches from action-based combat to turn-based combat.

GOG has been growing its library quite a bit this year, bringing on titles from some of the biggest publishers around. In the latest update, GOG has brought on DRM-free versions of the most recent Deus Ex titles, including Deus Ex: Human Revolution Director's Cut and Deus Ex: Mankind Divided.

As always when buying a game on GOG, you will have the option to download the games directly with no DRM and do with them as you please. However, you can also use the excellent GOG Galaxy launcher to easily find and organise your games library too.

Both Deus Ex titles are on sale to mark this occasion too. Deus Ex: Human Revolution Director's Cut is just £1.99 and as the name implies, includes all additional content. Deus Ex: Mankind Divided is also on sale, with the standard edition sitting at £2.99, or the Deluxe Edition (season pass included) costing £4.99, which is very cheap.

If you prefer retro Deus Ex, then the original game is £0.69 and Deus Ex 2: Invisible War is also £0.69, so you could get the entire series DRM-free for less than a tenner.

Bethesda has been supporting GOG for a few years now, offering up DRM-free versions of older Elder Scrolls, Fallout and Quake titles. Now, a few newer titles have been added to the library, accompanied by a catalogue-wide Bethesda Publisher Sale.

GOG has kicked off its big summer sale event today, featuring heavy discounts, free games, daily bundles and giveaways, just ahead of next week's Steam sale, which is due to begin on the 11th of June. The GOG sale officially kicked off at midday GMT.

The way GOG's sale works is some purchases will automatically come with free games, up to three titles depending on the purchase. Those who spend a certain amount during the sale will get free copies of SimCity2000, S.T.A.L.K.E.R: Clear Sky and Xenonauts.

GOGSummer_640

  • SimCity 2000 – free for everyone who spends at least $1.
  • S.T.A.L.K.E.R.: Clear Sky – free for everyone who spends at least $20.
  • Xenonauts – free for everyone who spends at least $50.

The sale ends on the 21st of June at midday GMT. Every game found on sale will be completely DRM free, just like back in the good old days. However, there is a new client available for titles purchased on GOG, it is called Galaxy and it works a lot like Steam.

Up to 700 games will be put on sale over the course of the next few weeks so keep checking back for more.

KitGuru Says: While Steam really has a hold of the market, there are plenty of people around who would prefer to buy their games free of DRM. GOG gives you that chance and now thanks to the Galaxy client, you won't need to miss out on features like achievements or game time tracking either.

The Walking Dead, Tales from Borderlands and The Wolf Among Us will all be landing on GOG soon. If you have yet to buy Telltale's Game of Thrones, then GOG has it at 40 per cent off to celebrate the launch on its platform.

“Thanks to GOG Galaxy, we're able to bring in major new titles, and the award-winning Telltale series are a prime example of that”, says Guillaume Rambourg, Managing Director at GOG.com in a press release.  “Gamers finally get to enjoy the engaging, story-driven adventures DRM-free: anywhere and at any time – but also benefit from achievements and other optional GOG Galaxy features if they want to. It's the freedom of choice that GOG.com is all about.”

Since the launch of GOG Galaxy, publishers have been giving GOG much more attention as a platform and Telltale is likely just the beginning. The door is now open for more high budget, triple A titles to go DRM-free.

GOG is gaining in popularity and its easy to see why, the retailer is completely against DRM, has some pretty good sales and now it is even launching a new feature that lets you take a game key from a game that was released on disc and redeem it for a DRM free digital version, which will also work properly on modern PCs.

Unfortunately, this can't be done for just any game you may have lying around on disc. GOG so far only has the feature available for Stalker: Call of Pripyat, Stalker: Clear Sky and Stalker: Shadow of Chernobyl. However, if you live in Russia, then you can also redeem copies of Eador: Genesis, Mount & Blade: Warband and Mount & Blade: With Fire and Sword.

GOG

GOG is currently working to incorporate other games but there is currently no word on how often we will see updates to this list. Writing in a press release, GOG's Oleg Klapovsky said: “We have been fighting to free all games from DRM since the very beginning, and this new feature is the next step for us. It's not a simple job, but we plan to bring in even more games in the future.”

Steam also supports physical game keys for select titles. Back in the day, I bought a Half-Life 2 bundle on-disc, which came with Counter-Strike: Source and redeemed it on Steam digitally. However, GOG has a specific focus on older titles, if it could get the publishers on-board, then those old PC discs you have hidden away somewhere might be worth digging out again.

You can check out the redeem page, HERE.

KitGuru Says: Taking physical games, which likely came with built-in DRM, and turning it in to a DRM-free digital copy is a nice idea and could help make some older titles relevant again. Do any of you guys use GOG? Are you sticking solely with Steam?

GOG, the DRM free games store likes to give away classic games occasionally, it previously gave away the classic Fallout titles and the company has now teamed up with developer, Rebellion, to give away the classic Alien VS Predator 2000 game.

There is a small catch, GOG is looking to attract people to participate in its GOG Galaxy beta, the DRM free gaming platform that works cross-platform with Steam for multiplayer titles. Those who take advantage of AVP on GOG, will still be able to play with friends who play the game's multiplayer through Steam, a point that both GOG and Rebellion are keen to point out.

avp

To redeem the game you need to sign up for the next stage of the GOG Galaxy beta and then you'll receive an activation code “within the next few days”. Once the game has been added to your account, you can play it forever and even download it outside of GOG Galaxy if you want to, although you should probably give it a go anyway just to be polite, you might even end up liking it.

The game will include Xbox 360 controller support for those of you who like to play hooked up to a TV or just don't like using the mouse and keyboard. However, this is primarily a shooter, so using a controller will generally put you at a slight disadvantage.

While some companies may have been pleased by the announcement by Microsoft that its next generation console, the Xbox One, would come packing built in DRM that locked games to individual accounts, disallowed game lending and required online activation on a regular basis, developer of the Witcher, CD Projekt is reserving judgement for now. Whatever the result though, it will put the gamers first, by releasing the Witcher III on all platforms.

“I am sure that a lot of gamers will choose one of the consoles for its convenience and easiness of use – that's fine, and by doing so they will agree to whatever rules the platform holder will impose,” said joint CEO Martin Iwiński while speaking with Eurogamer.

“What I can, however, guarantee here and now, is that if you want the 100 per cent DRM-free experience you will have it on the PC, the platform where we set the rules for our games. The Witcher 3 will be available 100 per cent DRM-free on our digital distribution platform GOG.com, and that's one thing I can confirm.”

witcherIII
The Witcher III trailer at E3 was well received, with pretty visuals and some interesting mechanics.

With the release of the Witcher III, it'll be the first time that CD Projekt has released a game simultaneously on multiple platforms before and while you'd have thought that the developer might be hesitant about working with Microsoft considering the software giant's new stance on console DRM, it ultimately wants people to play its game, leaving the decision on what platform to use up to them.

Iwiński did add the caveat however, that as it stands, the company didn't know very much about Microsoft's new policies, as the E3 showing for the Xbox One was the first time he and the rest of the company had heard about it.
“We have not received anything from Microsoft until today on this one and, before we form any definite opinions here, we would like to have this process explained in detail by the platform holder.”

“From our side, we will be of course looking for the most gamer friendly solution.”

That much is clear.

KitGuru Says: This is a commendable approach. Gamers should be the priority of a developer and while the Xbox One might not be an ideal platform, people will buy it and if you don't want a group of people to miss out on your game experience, developing something for them – even if you don't agree with their choice – is admirable.

A new site set to begin operation for the first time on 26th September, Indie Game Stand, will offer a single Indie game every four days, with users able to pay whatever they want for it.

Clearly taking inspiration from the likes of HumbleBundle, but making things a little more regular, Indie Game Stand pledges that each game will receive four days in the limelight before being shelved. However, those games will then be promoted as part of the archive of offers, directing still interested users to the developer's website for purchasing there. This will likely involve a much higher price than the average gamer would have paid given the chance to pay what they want (with Humble Bundles that include several games at once, the average price rarely peaks above $8) which only gives more incentive to keep checking back every few days to make sure you don't miss one.

Indie Game Stand
Following on from GoG and Humble Bundle, DRM is non existent

All games will be DRM free, as is becoming far more common in the game development world these days – thankfully – and a portion of all sales will go to charities including Child's Play, the Electronic Frontier Foundation and Philabundance.

Those that sign up for an account now will receive a free copy of the indie platformer Chester, from Brilliant Blue-G games.

For the lazy, here's a link to Indie Game Stand.
