With the announcement that Microsoft are set to bring a select number of their exclusive Xbox titles to PlayStation and Switch, many fans wondered just how much the publisher would allow its teams to take advantage of these competing pieces of hardware. Fortunately, it seems as though the power of the PS5 will be fully utilised, adding DualSense features and more.

As shared by Resetera user Joule, the PlayStation 5 version of Obsidian Entertainment’s Pentiment seems to take full advantage of the console’s unique hardware. Presumably using the console’s Kraken compression technology, the game takes up just 6.37GB compared to the Xbox version’s 11.4GB.

Great things come in small packages, and despite being a unique selling point for the PS5, Pentiment actually offers support for the DualSense’s features (advanced haptics etc…) – an unexpected yet welcome surprise indeed.

Finally, the PS5 version of the game can run at 120fps on supported displays. Of all the aforementioned Exclusive features, this one will most likely find its way to the Xbox versions at some point in the future.

Still, it is highly encouraging to see that Xbox devs are willing to use PS5’s unique hardware advantages.

KitGuru says: What do you think of the games coming to PS5? Are you surprised by its features? Why do you think Microsoft is allowing these games to use the PS5’s features? Let us now down below.

Since its launch back in 2020, the PlayStation 5 has received a significant number of updates, adding brand new features alongside miscellaneous quality-of-life improvements. This latest beta update is part of the latter – though does bring with it a whole host of welcome additions.

Making the announcement via the PlayStation Blog, the Senior Vice President for Platform Experience at SIE – Hideaki Nishino – said:

“As the new year kicks into high gear with an amazing slate of PS5 game releases like The Last of Us Part II Remastered, Tekken 8 and Helldivers 2, along with FINAL FANTASY VII Rebirth later this month, we’re pleased to roll out another PS5 system software beta today with a number of quality-of-life enhancements and new features.”

Though currently only in beta, those from the US, Canada, Japan, UK, Germany or France can join the program to gain early access to these upcoming features, including:

 • DualSense controller speaker volume enhancements
 • Improved DualSense mic noise cancellation
 • Additional interactions during Share Screen gameplay
 • You can now adjust the brightness of your PS5 console’s power indicator.

While many of these features are not necessary, such small changes to the likes of the DualSense (and console hardware features) are very welcome to see. Hopefully the firmware’s full release is on the horizon.

For those who wish to play PC games using a controller, Microsoft’s Xbox peripheral has historically been the go-to accessory – with many PC titles outright not supporting PlayStation controllers (at least not without 3rd-party software). Finally, those using a PlayStation controller can now see exactly what games support their peripherals.

Following the announcement back in September that Steam would soon start to inform users on which games support the DualShock 4 and DualSense controllers, the functionality is now live, with Valve taking to their blog to say:

“Steam has long made it easy to find games that have great support for Xbox controllers. Today's Steam update expands on that foundation to help the millions of players with PlayStation's DualShock and DualSense controllers easily find games to play with those devices.”

This latest update introduces a number of new menus and pop-ups which lets players know the exact extent of their controller’s support with particular games. Some of the added functions include:

 • An upgraded controller-friendly hub
 • Store pages now display supported controller types
 • Store search filters
 • New compatibility section in your library
 • Controller configuration button
 • New library filters

As someone who plays on PC using a DualSense controller, it is highly exciting to see this new level of transparency, meaning that players will be able to utilise the controller’s unique features (adaptive triggers, haptics) with games that support it much more clearly. Hopefully the list of DualSense-supported titles increases exponentially over the coming months and years.

Lies of P is the latest Souls-like to capture the hearts of fans, letting you play as the famous Pinocchio in a cruel, dark Belle Époque world. The team at NEOWIZ have been supporting the game greatly since its launch last week, with the title’s 1.2 patch now going live – adding support for the DualSense on PC alongside dozens of other changes.

Releasing the patch notes onto its Steam page, the Lies of P developers officially detailed update 1.2, which brings with it:

 • Field Monster Balance Changes
 • Decrease the HP of all 3 types of Dimensional Butterflies
 • Adjusted the rewards for some monsters
 • Boss Monster Balance Changes
 • System Changes Related to the Character Progression Reset
 • Players will now be able to carry more weight for each point spent on Capacity
 • Successfully performing the Fable Art ‘Guard Parry' will now break the monster's stance
 • Now supports the DUALSHOCK 4 & DualSense controllers on Windows OS devices

This is but a short list of the dozens of changes brought about thanks to patch 1.2, with some of the most significant adjustments being done to certain enemies and their difficulty levels. While some may see it as a nerf, many SoulsBorne fans seem to agree that the changes made were necessary – and so it is good to see the team at NEOWIZ listening to the community.

Following the release of the demo back in June ahead of launch, NEOWIZ conducted many changes to Lies of P based on fan feedback. It seems as though they are continuing to keep an eye on the community and their thoughts – ultimately making for a better overall gaming experience.

For those who wish to play PC games using a controller, Microsoft’s Xbox peripheral has historically been the go-to accessory – with many PC titles outright not supporting PlayStation controllers (at least not without 3rd-party software). Finally, Steam is adding an indicator to its Steam store listings, letting DualShock and DualSense owners know which games will and won't work using their controllers.

Making the announcement on their blog, the team at Valve announced an update to their Steamworks page, saying “Steamworks has a new controller-support questionnaire for developers to better describe the devices supported by the game. If your game plays well with a DualShock or DualSense Controller (PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5 respectively), you can now specify that information within Steamworks.”

They continued, “This is the first step toward helping players find games that support the most commonly-used PC video game controllers. Starting in October, we'll show this information to players in the Steam store and Steam desktop client.”

With developers soon being able to specify controller support, players will also be given new tools, allowing them to filter titles based on what controllers the game works with, making it an overall much more user-friendly experience.

While 3rd-party software such as DS4Windows and DualSenseX already exist to serve as a bridge between PlayStation controllers and PC titles, being able to easily identify which games will and won't work natively with Sony’s controllers will be a highly welcome change.

Game controllers are typically designed with a one size fits all approach, with ergonomics designed to fit the average person. Thanks to Exogrip, soon you'll be able to easily add your own customised grip to your controllers for a more personalised gaming experience.

Exogrip is a new company, founded by Sam Coombes, a fellow gamer who has grown sick of hand fatigue while using a controller. The Exogrip is intended to solve that very problem, with the PS5 Exogrip now available. The grip is designed to mould to the unique shape of each user's hands, offering better comfort while playing and making the DualSense controller less cumbersome to hold for hours at a time.

The PS5 Exogrip uses a patent-pending formula. The grip will be smooth at first but once heat is applied, the material becomes malleable and will mould to your hand's shape. This should make the controller more comfortable to hold for people of all hand sizes, particularly for longer gaming sessions.

You start off the process by dropping the grips in boiling water for one minute, then attach the grips to the controller and apply pressure with your hand to mould it into shape.

With the DualSense controller being larger than previous DualShock gamepads, providing this first for the PS5 controller makes plenty of sense. Speaking on the Exogrip launch, founder Samuel Coombes said: “Having been obsessed with gaming for most of my life, I noticed that the longer I spend doing it the more uncomfortable it got. Exogrip’s smart-grip solution is simple but effective and gives gamers just what they need – comfort and control, which adds up to a better gaming experience.”

The Exogrip is available now for £24.99.

KitGuru Says: Since moving to the PS5 and the new DualSense controller, hand fatigue is something I have run into pretty often, especially when playing action-oriented games like Final Fantasy 16. Would you opt for a mouldable grip like this to aid in long gaming sessions?

One of the biggest generational leaps introduced with the PlayStation 5 was the DualSense controller – taking all of the features of previous peripherals and adding a whole host of additional hardware including adaptive triggers and precise haptic feedback. While PC adoption of the new controller has been slow, No Man’s Sky’s latest update has added full wireless DualSense support for all its features – a first on PC.

The unique features of the PS5’s DualSense controller have been adopted rather quickly by developers – at least for the PS5 versions of games. Despite its support on Steam, these bespoke features are less commonly implemented on PC even when using a DualSense controller, with the main workaround requiring users to plug in the controller and use it wired.

In a surprise move – and as reported by ResetEra user ‘mountainmohawk’ – the latest No Man’s Sky update brought with it full support for the DualSense controller, meaning both its adaptive triggers and advanced haptics are available and usable entirely wirelessly.

While there is no denying that Hello Games are one of the most dedicated development studios in the industry currently, hopefully other studios and games begin to offer such robust support for the controller. We will have to wait and see.

Back in August, Sony announced the DualSense Edge – its own pro-grade controller to take on Microsoft's Xbox Elite Series gamepads. The controller and its features were shown at the time, but pricing and launch date were not announced. That changed today, and the DualSense Edge will be significantly more expensive than the Xbox Elite Series 2.

As you may expect from an “elite-level” controller, the DualSense Edge will feature customisable controls, allowing users to remap keys, deactivate buttons and even adjust the trigger's dead zones and travel distance, as well as analogue stick sensitivity and dead zones. configurations can be saved into profiles and quickly swapped between. The controller also ships with swappable analogue sticks, back paddle buttons for additional inputs, a braided USB-C cable and a carrying case.

Many criticised Microsoft for the price of the Xbox Elite controller, which launched at £120. The Elite Series 2 controller was even more expensive at launch, coming in at around £150. The DualSense Edge has both of them beat, with a launch price of $199.99 in the US, or £209.99 in the UK.

The DualSense Edge will become available starting on the 26th of January.

Sony recently held a State of Play where the console manufacturer gave fans another look at the highly-anticipated God of war Ragnarok. Alongside this upcoming piece of software, Sony announced some accompanying hardware, with a God of War Ragnarok themed controller on its way.

Available on the 9th of November – the same day as God of War Ragnarök – you can “Arm yourself for the battle of Ragnarök with this limited edition DualSense wireless controller. Inspired by the Norse world of Midgard with its unique two-tone design of cool blue on icy white, embellished with bear and wolf insignia – representing Kratos and Atreus.”

God of War Ragnarök represents the first game from Sony to get an accompanying custom PS5 DualSense controller, with all other controllers until now offering either basic colours, or simple patterns.

If you still have your launch-day DualSense controller, it could be worth picking a new one up, as on top of the cool new design and colour, Sony’s DualSense controllers have slowly and subtly had its hardware improved over time, with more recent controllers produced featuring stronger Adaptive Triggers – among other small but nice additions.

With Sony now offering a PS5 controller based on an upcoming video game, it is safe to assume that more future PS5 titles will also see custom controllers released – allowing your controller to match your favourite game.

While Microsoft has offered a more expensive ‘Elite' Xbox controller for years now, Sony has stuck to its standard controllers so far. According to reports this week, that will change soon, as apparently Sony is working on a “pro” controller.

The DualSense controller that ships with the PS5 was already a massive upgrade over the DualShock 4. The PS5's controller implemented resistive triggers and other haptic feedback enhancements. However, there are still some features that could improve things further.

According to reporter Tom Henderson (via TryHardGuides), Sony is working on a new DualSense Pro controller, which would add removable thumb sticks, trigger stops, removable grips and additional paddle buttons at the back of the controller.

Many of these features are selling points of the Xbox Elite series controllers and can also be found on third-party gamepads from the likes of Scuf. The new DualSense Pro controller should be announced at the end of this month, with availability following soon after.

The DualSense controller has proven to be highly successful with its mix of new haptic feedback features. Some titles have full support for DualSense on PC as well, making it an increasingly popular option for a PC gaming controller. Now to make things easier for PC gamers, Sony has released a DualSense app.

The application is pretty simple, allowing users to update their controller's firmware to the latest version without plugging it into a console. There are no additional features, such as controller settings or button bindings, but it is a start.

The DualSense firmware updater is available now for Windows 10 and Windows 11. After downloading it, you'll just need to plug your controller in via USB and you can then update the firmware.

A number of PC games fully support the DualSense feature set at this point, including the likes of Metro Exodus, Assassin's Creed Valhalla, Far Cry 6, Call of Duty Vanguard, Dying Light 2, Deathloop, Ghostwire Tokyo and Death Stranding: Director's Cut.

The DualSense controller is an impressive piece of kit, with the console hardware being pushed beyond expectations thanks to a number of PC programs. Interestingly, Sony has actually made the controller slightly better in a number of ways, hopefully leading to a longer lifespan as well as an enhanced overall experience.

The DualSense controller by Sony offers a plethora of features which add small (or sometimes not so small) improvements to the overall controller-using experience. From haptics accurate enough to be used as sound to gyro controls to the touchpad, the DualSense has many superfluous but fun hardware features.

One of the biggest features as advertised by Sony was the ability for the R2 and L2 Triggers to offer adaptive and dynamic resistance. While an interesting feature, its application has been somewhat underutilised in most games. Even so, Sony is continuing to improve the triggers in small but meaningful ways.

As discovered in a teardown by TronicsFix, the new coloured DualSense controllers – namely the blue, pink and purple ones – feature thicker trigger springs, going from 0.25mm to 0.3mm. While seemingly a small change, this should not only allow for more degrees of resistance, but should also make the controller more durable in the long term.

Additionally, the analogue sticks have seen some internal changes – though its purpose is yet unknown. It’s safe to assume that all the other coloured controllers will see this improvement over time, but if you do have one of the new controllers, it's worth seeing if you can notice a difference.

One of the PS5’s most unique selling points is the DualSense controller’s Adaptive Triggers, used both for gameplay and immersion purposes. Slowly but surely, more and more devices are supporting the feature, possibly creating a new controller standard.

iOS 15.4 recently saw its first Beta release shortly following the uneventful launch of iOS15.3. Luckily for Apple fans, 15.4 is looking to be quite exciting feature-wise, with a major step towards continued gaming integrations.

With iOS 15.4, the PS5 DualSense controller – which was already supported on mobile – has now seen additional features being ported over to non-Sony systems. Though it was already available on PC, the DualSense’s Adaptive Triggers can now be used with mobile applications.

Of course, older games will not suddenly be upgraded to offer use of the Adaptive Triggers, but developers can now create or update games to utilise this unique functionality.

At its worst, the Adaptive Triggers are a toggleable gimmick. At its best however, it offers multiple simultaneous improvements to the overall gaming experience. The mobile platform’s hardware has far surpassed the gaming software that is run on it, and as such, iPhones and Android hold within them so much gaming potential. This is a nice step towards this recognition.

KitGuru says: What do you think of the DualSense? Do you like the Adaptive Triggers? Which game used it best? Let us know down below.

Back when the PS5 was first revealed, fans immediately saw potential for custom panels, which would allow users to customise their console with custom graphics or colours. Some companies attempted to serve this market, but were swiftly shut down by Sony's legal team. Now, Sony will begin selling official PS5 console covers, starting in 2022.

The first batch of PS5 console covers is known as the ‘Galaxy Collection', giving owners the option of blue, purple, red, pink and black replacement covers. Additionally, Sony will be releasing a set of DualSense controllers with the same colour options:

You can see all of the colour options, and the new DualSense controllers, in the gallery above. First, Midnight Black and Cosmic Red will begin shipping in January 2022, followed by ‘Nova Pink', ‘Galactic Purple' and ‘Starlight Blue' in the first half of next year.

These will be sold via PlayStation Direct, Sony's direct-to-consumer retail service, available in the US, Canada, UK, France, Germany, Switzerland, Austria, Spain, Portugal, Italy, Australia, New Zealand, Japan, China, Taiwan, Hong Kong, Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand, Indonesia, Vietnam, Korea and the Philippines. Additional territories will be added throughout next year.

In terms of pricing, we only have the US price at the moment, which puts a set of PS5 console covers at $55. We do not know if these new colourways for DualSense controllers will cost more, but the standard price of the controller is $69.99.

KitGuru Says: Hopefully at some point we'll see limited edition covers with custom graphics based on various big games, in addition to a wider array of colour options. What do you all think of Sony's first set of PS5 console covers? Will you be getting a set?

The post KitGuru Games: Returnal and the Power of the DualSense first appeared on KitGuru.]]>
I have been one of the fortunate few to have gotten my hands on a PS5 on launch day (I have a poorly managed sleep schedule and luck to thank for that – as well as miscommunication on the part of retailers allowing me to pre-order one when most people were sleeping). While many of the PS5’s features offer a noticeable step up from previous generations – such as the speed, graphics, frame rate and more – for me, the biggest game changer is the DualSense and the way in which it utilises haptic feedback and its triggers.

The potential and power of the DualSense (in my opinion) has been realised fully in the Housemarque title Returnal. Hailing from a studio known for its gameplay-first approach, the DualSense and its features needed to not get in the way of the gameplay itself. While an argument can be made that multiplayer first-person shooters are only hampered by haptics in a competitive environment, the use of haptic feedback and the Adaptive Triggers in Returnal lent themselves to improving gameplay.

Firstly: The Adaptive Triggers. In Returnal, the L2 trigger serves two functions: it allows you to aim both your primary fire, and secondary fire, depending on how much force you put on the trigger. This allows the player to focus on the screen, no longer requiring them to move their fingers to a different button in order to activate different firing modes. All of this is in service of not only allowing for greater reaction times, but once you get used to it (and I did very quickly) a more seamless shooting experience. The Adaptive Triggers and its implementation made me better at the game.

Secondly: The enhanced haptics. While less of a gameplay-altering feature, the haptics of the DualSense controller helps build immersion in a way that not only makes the gaming experience better, but assists with intuitive movement and gameplay. Once you reach a level of haptic precision as seen with the DualSense, vibrations are no longer simply used to make weapons feel better, but can also act as a way to target a human’s instinctive understanding of the game.

In Returnal this is done through a number of ways. The subtle vibrations as you dash, jump, move and fall all inform you of not only what actions you have made, but whether a high jump has damaged you, what state of a jump you are in, or how far you have dashed. Furthermore, the taps you receive when your secondary fire is ready means that you do not need to look to the HUD for confirmation – you simply know when it is ready. This again lends itself to making the gameplay more seamless, and allowing you to focus on the centre of the screen and its enemies without having your line of sight disturbed. This is not simply about immersion, but about teaching your instincts to become a better player.

Returnal is one of the most satisfying shooters I have played, and I truly believe that the haptic feedback and the adaptive triggers are a major part of this. Of course, it is down to developers to use these features in the correct way (for example, I believe Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War fails in this respect), but when it is done correctly, the DualSense controller lets you not only be more immersed in the game you are playing, but helps you become a better player. While dual analogue sticks will never rival a mouse when it comes to precision, the DualSense controller makes a great argument for why haptics are so important to games.

Discuss on our Facebook page HERE.

KitGuru says: Returnal has showcased why the DualSense's new features are not just gimmicks but can actually be game changers when used in the right hands. While I think that some games still feel better to play with a mouse (an argument that I will discussed at a later date), I believe that when done correctly, the DualSense can make a game better. If you manage to get your hands on a PS5, I urge you to give Returnal a try.

We recently reported that Netflix announced its intention to get more into the gaming market. While the streaming service has previously released a number of interactive shows and films, this latest push seems to be much more significant. Now it looks as though they may be partnering with Sony to bring PlayStation games to the service – at least this is what a recent data mine seems to suggest.

In the wake of the news that Netflix is looking to enter the video game market, a data miner by the name of Steve Moser looked into the Netflix app revealing many interesting details. Of these, the two most notable seems to suggest that the service will be adding support for the DualSense controller – but even more interesting is the fact that an image of Ghost of Tsushima was found within the app.

While merely speculation at this point, it does seem to suggest that perhaps PlayStation and Netflix are looking to partner up, bringing the console manufacturer’s games to the streaming service.

Netflix is one of the biggest film and tv streaming platforms in the world. While Sony has its own game streaming service in the form of PlayStation Now, its relevance within the industry is much less prominent when compared to the likes of Microsoft’s xCloud – which has been picking up a great deal of steam as of late.

PlayStation partnering with Netflix to bring its library of AAA games to the service’s more than 200 million subscribers seems like a mutually beneficial move to both Netflix and PlayStation. It will be interesting to see when Netflix officially announces this partnership, and whether it indeed is as the data mine suggests.

With the most recent generation of devices, it seems the video game market has shifted to offering longer-term support for games at cheaper prices – with next-gen remasters and upgrades being offered for free, as is post-launch content. Interestingly, we are now seeing other aspects being updated alongside this, including a game’s haptics, as can be seen with DIRT 5 and the PS5.

DIRT 5 was one of the earlier PS5 launch games to take advantage of the DualSense controller features such as haptic feedback. Since then however, it seems the developers at Codemasters have found new ways to take advantage of the controller and its haptics, offering even more refinements.

The 20th of July will see the game’s biggest update yet, bringing “New cars, new tracks, new ways to play, and much more”. All of this content is said to be further enhanced on PS5 thanks to “some dedicated changes that change the feel and sound of every epic racing moment.”

As mentioned, DIRT 5 already supported the DualSense and its unique features, however with this update players will “feel more connected to Dirt 5 than ever before with this update, as we implement full haptics and adaptive trigger support for the DualSense controller. These enhancements allow Dirt 5 to give you more feedback throughout every event. Notice the changes in traction across different surfaces, feel the brake trigger pushing against you as you slow down, sense the clunk of a gear change, and find the limit of adhesion as you steer and accelerate through corners.”

Alongside this, 3D audio support is being refined, letting you “Hear the roar of other cars racing all around you thanks to our dynamic audio range, and hear track-side speakers and spectators rise and fall in volume as you race by them. Our attention to detail with audio in Dirt 5, paired with the 3D audio support, creates a true soundscape that takes the overall experience up another notch.”

The haptic feedback and adaptive triggers of the DualSense controller is proving to be quite popular with both developers and fans. With games such as DIRT 5 evolving how it uses these features over time, it will be interesting to see how the controller is used 1, 2 or 4 years from now.

One of the biggest innovations with the PlayStation 5 is the creation of the DualSense controller, which added a whole new layer of haptic feedback as well as adaptive triggers – increasing immersion in a number of games. PS5 players are not the only ones who can benefit however, as Adaptive trigger support has now been brought to Black Ops Cold War on PC.

One of the biggest games to take advantage of the PS5’s new DualSense controller at launch was Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War. With full haptic and adaptive trigger support, every weapon felt more unique than ever before. Though these features were previously exclusive to PlayStation, PC users with a DualSense controller can now experience these enhanced features.

With the recent release of Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War Season 4 Reloaded, it seems that Treyarch stealthily added enhanced support for the DualSense controller, as players are now reporting that the adaptive triggers now function on PC as they do on PS5.

Currently, it is unknown whether the game also supports the enhanced haptic feedback as well, or if support is limited to just the triggers. It is certainly possible to do both, as was seen with Metro Exodus, which added full DualSense support for PC in an update.

While the controller was developed for the PS5, it is encouraging to see PC players able to use the enhanced features of the system’s controller, changing the feel of a game purely through the purchase of a new peripheral.

While both Microsoft and Sony released new controllers for their respective next-gen consoles, the Xbox Series X/S controller was an incremental upgrade over the Xbox One gamepad, while the PS5's DualSense controller went with a more ambitious design and feature set. Now, Microsoft is looking to make some bigger improvements to the Xbox gamepad.

During an interview with Kinda Funny, Xbox head, Phil Spencer, touched on Sony's controller and noted that the company is looking at what it can do to introduce similar features: “We’re definitely thinking about different kinds of devices that can bring more games to more places.”

Spencer went on to add: “There’s probably some work that we’ll do on the controller. I think Sony’s done a nice job with their controller and we kind of look at some of that and there are things that we should go do.”

This is not the first time that Microsoft has expressed interest in bringing DualSense controller features over to its own gamepad. Earlier this year, the company conducted a survey asking Xbox players for feedback on features like resistive/adaptive triggers. Unfortunately, there is no timeline on when we might see a new, upgraded Xbox controller.

KitGuru Says: It could be a long while before we see an upgraded Xbox controller hit the market, but it is something that is being worked on. Have any of you used the DualSense controller? What do you think of the new features?

Ever since the PS5 was first revealed, some fans expressed their dislike for the black and white colour scheme adopted by the next-generation console. The DualSense also shared this look. Now, 6 months after its launch, Sony is finally releasing new DualSense colours.

Making the announcement on its blog, PlayStation officially revealed “two new colors that will be joining the DualSense controller lineup starting next month: Midnight Black and Cosmic Red.”

According to Sony, “Midnight Black features two subtly different shades of black with light grey detailing to reflect how we view space through the night sky, and Cosmic Red offers a striking black and red design inspired by the unique vivid shades of red found throughout the cosmos.”

As mentioned, both controllers will be made available to purchase starting next month. The PS5’s launch colours proved to be divisive, and so introducing new colours should saitate fans who prefer their technology to blend into the background.

With the announcement of new DualSense controllers, it begs the question as to when Sony will likewise reveal new colours of the system itself. Unlike previous consoles, the PS5’s side plates are completely removable, meaning that if they wished, PlayStation could sell different coloured side panels without requiring fans to purchase a whole new console. Hopefully first-party PS5 side plates aren't too far off.

When the PS5 was first revealed, one of the most controversial aspects to the console was its colour scheme, which adopted a black and white two-tone look. The DualSense controller shared a similar colour scheme. Some fans liked the look, while others did not. For the latter group, it would seem as though Sony will finally be making alternate colour options for the controller.

According to the Spanish website AreaJugones, and as reported by Eurogamer, Sony will be launching two new DualSense controller colours “very soon” – a red and a grey one. How exactly these controllers will look both in terms of shading and whether they will keep the two-toned look is currently unknown, however alternate colour options is something which fans have been eagerly anticipating.

As mentioned, the black and white two-toned look of both the PS5 and its accessories have proven to be somewhat divisive. With the side plates on the PS5 being swappable, trading that two-tone look for something different is relatively simple.

Until now however, changing the colour of the DualSense required the controller to be fully disassembled, painted and then put back together. As such, if this leak proves to be true, then PS5 owners who are not fans of the black and white look should soon be happy.

While each console manufacturer makes 1st party controllers which it deems to be the perfect balance between cost and functionality, 3rd party offerings are able to get much more creative with its designs and features. One of the most well known 3rd party manufacturers, SCUF, has now announced that it is working on its own PS5 controller.

In a recent financial call, the CEO of SCUF’s parent company Corsair revealed that a PS5 version of the SCUF controller is in the works. While no release date was given, they claimed that “We’re obviously working as fast as we can to get out [the] PS5 controller. We haven’t released when that will be, but I suspect we’ll be pretty early in the market compared to any of our competitors.”

3rd party controllers run the gamut in quality, from being cheap alternatives of 1st party offerings, to premium accessories which offer far greater functionality. SCUF controllers have historically taken the 1st party controllers as a base, adding features to it, while still maintaining the feel of a 1st party controller.

The DualSense PS5 controller is one of the most complicated yet, offering high quality haptics and adaptive triggers – to name a few of its new features. It will be interesting to see just how SCUF will alter the design and functionality to work with its company’s own design language – and whether the all important haptics and adaptive triggers will be kept.

The Xbox Series X/S and PlayStation 5 consoles have been out for quite some time now, each with a new controller. Back in November, Apple confirmed it would be bringing support for these new gamepads to iOS, now six months later, that support has finally arrived.

As part of the iOS 14.5 update, Apple has also introduced support for additional game controllers on iOS, including the Xbox Series X/S controller and the PS5's DualSense.

Apple began expanding gamepad support on iOS in recent years in preparation for its own gaming service – Apple Arcade. These controllers can also be used for cloud gaming services, which are finally starting to open up to iOS.

Currently, Microsoft is testing Xbox Cloud Gaming on iOS via browsers on the iPhone and iPad. GeForce Now is available on iOS with a similar web-based solution and soon, Amazon Luna and Google Stadia will be joining the ranks.

The DualSense controller represented a major evolution in the way video game haptics were implemented and used. Featuring a much greater level of precision than previous controllers, the DualSense uses all new voice coil actuators to much greater effect. Unfortunately PS4 games created without the DualSense in mind suffered from much weaker vibrations than even the DualShock 4. Fortunately, this has now been fixed.

As part of the first major PS5 system update, Sony introduced a number of new features and improvements. One improvement that was not explicitly mentioned however was the way in which PS4 games were handled with the DualSense.

Prior to this update, the rumble for PS4 games on the DualSense controller was much weaker and even less precise than the original DualShock 4, despite using new haptics. Following this update however, users are reporting that when playing PS4 games, the DualSense now more accurately replicates the feeling of using a DualShock 4 as far as rumble is concerned.

While the rumble on PS4 was nothing special, it could still be used to great effect, and so it is good to see that the DualSense has been updated to give players that authentic feeling of playing a game on PS4. The idea of updating a controller through software is interesting, and it will be curious to what other additions or changes are made over the lifespan of the PS5.

Sony has been catching some criticism over the PS5 ‘DualSense' controller for a few weeks now, with some even participating in a class action lawsuit. In an investigation over the controller's ‘stick drift' issues, some experts pin the DualSense's lifespan at around 417 hours before stick drift issues start to kick in.

The folks at iFixit uploaded a teardown of the DualSense controller recently in an effort to find the root cause of these joystick drifting issues. During the teardown, the group found that the current revision of the DualSense could “easily exceed” its operating life in just over 400 hours of gaming.

The group also obtained an information sheet from manufacturer ALPS, who creates parts for Joysticks used by larger companies like Sony for building their gamepads. According to ALPS, the expected operation life cycle of the joysticks is 2 million cycles, followed by a 500,000 cycle life-span for centre-push function of the joystick.

The iFixit team argues that console manufacturers should be designing controllers to have easily replacable joysticks due to the relatively short life span offered for these parts: “After this research, it’s bizarre to us that console makers don’t consider joysticks to be consumable parts and design them to be easily replaced.”

Currently, Sony is facing at least one class-action lawsuit in the US over DualSense joystick drift. Nintendo is also facing several lawsuits over the same problem and recently, Microsoft has also been embroiled in a legal battle over the life-span of the Xbox One controller.

KitGuru Says: The last few years have made it clear that console makers like Sony, Nintendo and Xbox need to take more care when it comes to designing and choosing parts for their controllers. The lifespan of gamepads seems to be getting concerningly short and stick-drift is becoming more and more common across the board.

Nintendo and Microsoft have been making headlines over the last couple of years due to lawsuits around ‘Stick Drift' on Xbox One and Nintendo Switch controllers. Now, Sony is also joining those ranks, with a law firm filing a class-action suit over the PS5's DualSense controller.

Stick drift is an issue that causes phantom movement to be registered by the controller’s analogue stick. In some cases, it can take years for this to become a problem and in others, stick drift can manifest within a few months. In the case of the PS5 DualSense controller, users have begun complaining about this issue just a few months after launch.

Law firm Chimicles Schwartz Kriner & Donaldson-Smith LLP filed the lawsuit on the 12th of February, shortly after launching an investigation calling for DualSense owners to share their experiences with drifting issues. The lawsuit filing claims that the DualSense is “defective”, adding that this issue “compromises the DualSense controller's core functionality”.

The lawsuit is of course similar to the ones Microsoft and Nintendo are currently fighting over Xbox One drift and Joy-Con drift respectively. So far, neither case has gone to trial. Nintendo rarely addresses the issue, meanwhile, Microsoft is attempting to force their lawsuit into arbitration. So far, Sony has not commented publicly on the DualSense lawsuit.

It looks like Sony's new DualSense controller is facing some issues. Recently, some users have been reporting stick drift issues, which has led to an investigation that could result in a class action lawsuit.

Both Nintendo and Microsoft are being sued for similar problems. Stick drift is an issue that causes phantom movement to be registered by the controller's analogue stick. In some cases, it can take years for this to become a problem and in others, stick drift can manifest within a few months.

Due to the recent uptick in complaints about the DualSense controller, law firm ‘CSK&D‘ is investigating whether it is a big enough issue to warrant a class action lawsuit, calling on customers to get in touch if they've experienced it.

Whether this turns into a legal issue remains to be seen. For now, it looks like Sony could end up in a similar situation to Nintendo and Microsoft.

While the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series of consoles arrived with a leap in CPU and GPU performance that is expected of a net-gen system, Sony opted to focus on also adding a number of new and unique features to its new console. Since launch, many users have praised the PS5’s DualSense controller, deeming it to be the true star of the new generation. Following this overwhelming praise, it would appear as though Microsoft may be planning their own version of the DualSense.

As reported by VGC, Microsoft has sent out a questionnaire to owners of its recently released Xbox Series X|S consoles asking them whether they would be interested in seeing the DualSense’s unique features added to Xbox.

The questionnaire offers respondents to express whether they are “aware of features on PlayStation controllers” that they “wish were on the controller that came with this console [the Xbox Series X|S],” with a question later asking for more specific details on which exact features they would like.

The DualSense launched alongside the PS5 with a number of unique features. While features such as the inbuilt mic and speaker, as well as the sixaxis motion carried over from the DualShock 4, the DualSense also added adaptive triggers and new haptic motors which can make for a much more immersive experience when done correctly.

While there have been fears surrounding long-term third party support – especially due to the lack of such features on the Xbox systems – seeing these features added to the Xbox controller would certainly prove to be beneficial to the industry as a whole. It’ll be interesting to see whether Mcirosoft does indeed eventually introduce a new controller with similar features.

The DualSense controller has been getting plenty of good feedback from early PS5 owners and soon, it looks like PC players will be able to use Sony's new gamepad too. Over the weekend, Valve brought PS5 controller support to the Steam Input API.

Valve typically likes to add support for all the major game controllers for PC games, so this isn't too surprising. With support now included in the Steam Input API, Steam supports the DualSense's LED, trackpad, rumble and gyro features. Currently, the ‘adaptive triggers' are not supported but perhaps that will change later down the line.

DualSense controller support is included in the Steam desktop client beta, which you can opt into in the settings menu.

Aside from announcing PS5 controller support, Valve also touched on the growing popularity of gamepads amongst Steam users. Apparently, over the last two years, the daily average user count of Steam players using a controller has doubled. This growth has been highest amongst PlayStation controller users, with Sony's gamepad appearing in 21.6 percent of all ‘controller sessions' on Steam.

One of the most unique aspects to the PlayStation 5 is the DualSense controller. With advanced haptics and adaptive triggers, developers can take advantage of the DualSense in order to create new and interesting gaming experiences. While it was already announced that Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War would take advantage of the controller, it has now been revealed that every single weapon has been tuned individually to feel different on the DualSense.

In an interview with Gamespot, the Lead Game Designer for Black Ops Cold War – Tony Flame – gave insight into the DualSense, saying “The DualSense controller is pretty awesome. It's got new haptic feedback so when you're pulling the trigger, it's shaking, every time a gun fires there is a little motor in there that's firing every time. There is sensitivity on the trigger that represents the trigger pressure on a real weapon.”

According to Flame, “All of that [the adaptive triggers and haptics] has been tuned in the game for each individual weapon. So it's quite a lot to take in, but it's pretty awesome, and it gives the guns a feeling like they've never had before.”

While this may lead to concerns for some when it comes to the game’s competitive aspect – especially considering the game offers cross-play – Flame reassured fans that “In general, with next-gen, we had to make sure that across the board, people would have a fair experience, no matter what platform they're on.”

Even though it will undoubtedly be exciting to try the new DualSense and its haptics/triggers, both can be turned off or tweaked at a system level, ensuring a fair and equal experience.
