With cloud gaming services becoming more prominent, particularly on mobile devices, we've seen a good rise in the number of game controllers released for smartphones and tablets. It looks like Sony will be getting in on this soon with its own split gamepad for mobile gaming.

In a patent first uncovered by VGC, we can see that Sony has designed a DualShock 4 style gamepad for mobile, split in two halves, so you have one controller at either side of the smartphone. The left controller has an analogue stick and D-Pad, while the right controller has another analogue stick and Cross, Circle, Square and Triangle buttons.

We can also see triggers and shoulder buttons on both sides, so you get the full suite of DualShock functions for playing games. It is worth noting that the DualShock 4 is already compatible with smartphones due to Bluetooth connectivity, so if you already have one, you could get a smartphone mount to pair with your controller instead and play that way.

PlayStation has been quiet in the mobile gaming space for a while now, but this patent indicates that a fresh push could be coming. Perhaps we'll even see PSNow streaming support brought to mobile.

A PlayStation representative has come out to explain how PS5 compatibility with PS4 peripherals will work. Apparently, most peripherals will work on the upcoming console, but some will be limited to supported PS4 games. On the other hand, Xbox has announced today that all Xbox One controllers will work on all games on Xbox Series X.

Out of all compatible PS4 peripherals and accessories, DualShock 4 is probably the most widely known and used of the bunch. While Microsoft is ensuring forwards compatibility for its peripherals, Sony is pushing people to move on. The DualShock 4 and other officially licensed PlayStation controllers can connect to PS5, but they will only work with backwards compatible PS4 titles, meaning the DualShock 4 will not work with newer PS5 games.

As per Sony's blog post, the reason behind this decision is that Sony believes that “PS5 games should take advantage of the new capabilities and features we’re bringing to the platform, including the features of DualSense wireless controller”.

Dedicated peripherals like licensed racing wheels, arcade sticks, and flight sticks will be supported on PS5 and supported PS4 games. The Platinum/Gold wireless headsets and other third-party headsets with USB or audio jack connectivity will also be compatible with the PS5. Additionally, PS Move Motion Controllers and the PlayStation VR Aim Controller will work on PS VR games running on PS5.

PlayStation Camera will work with PS5 too, but it will need a PlayStation Camera adaptor “that will be provided at no additional cost to PS VR users”. Details on acquiring the adaptor will be shared at a later date.

Curiously enough, Xbox UK has tweeted regarding the backwards controller compatibility of the Xbox Series X, not long after Sony's blog post. As per the tweet, all Xbox One controllers will be compatible with Xbox Series X “across all games”, including the official Xbox controller, the Xbox adaptive controller, the Xbox Elite wireless controller, and the SCUF controllers.

KitGuru says: Do you think Sony should have made PS5 more widely compatible with older accessories and peripherals? Is PS5's limited peripheral compatibility an issue for you?

Apple recently unveiled iOS 14 at WWDC 2020. The newest version of the iPhone software is set to bring with it a revamped home screen, a more compact UI, and many other smaller refinements and improvements. One of the new features which went under the radar however was the fact that with iOS 14, controllers connected to supported devices will offer both rumble and motion sensing functionalities.

On Apple’s developer website, the iPhone manufacturer stated that with iOS 14 “you can bring third-party game controllers and custom haptics into your games on iPhone, iPad, Mac, and Apple TV.”

Furthermore, developers can “use the Game Controller framework in tandem with Core Haptics to enable rumble feedback,” while also “tak[ing] your gaming experience to the next level with custom button mapping, nonstandard inputs, and control over specialty features like motion sensors, lights, and battery level.”

With the release of iOS 13 last year, third party gamepads such as PlayStation’s DualShock 4 and Xbox’s Wireless Controller were added to an ever-increasing list of supported bluetooth controllers. Unfortunately at the time, many of the controllers’ more unique features such as rumble (and gyro on the DualShock 4) were not supported – meaning that many of the gaming experiences were less immersive in many ways.

It is encouraging to see Apple increasing the depth of support for these third party controllers, especially as iPhones themselves are known for their impressive haptics and sensors.

Just recently, we saw a huge wave of limited edition hardware unveiled for the impending launch of Cyberpunk 2077. If you are more of a survival horror fan though, then you are in luck, as limited edition accessories for Naughty Dog's The Last of Us Part II have also been revealed today.

First up is the Seagate 2TB GameDrive, similar to the external HDDs that Seagate has been making for consoles for years now. The key difference this time though, is that the drive is themed to match the limited edition ‘The Last of Us Part II' PS4:

Of course, roughly 100GB of that 2TB GameDrive would be eaten up by The Last of Us Part II itself, as it is a hefty game.

Aside from the HDD and console, there will also be a themed DualShock 4 controller and headset. Most of these accessories can be bought separately, but Sony will also have some bundle options for those looking to get their hands on the full set.

The Last of Us Part II Limited Edition PS4 Pro will set you back $399, while the DS4 gamepad is $64.99. The headset is $99.99 and finally, the Seagate 2TB GameDrive is $89.99.

In a surprise announcement by PlayStation, the Dualshock 4 will be receiving an official attachment which adds two back buttons to the controller, allowing for a more versatile playstyle. The “Dualshock 4 Back Button Attachment for PS4” will allow you to “Map up to 16 different actions to the two back buttons and keep track of your customised setup via the integrated OLED display”. The accessory will be launching on the 14th of February in Europe, for €29.99.

The attachment promises to “elevate your gameplay by delivering more versatility and performance, while maintaining the comfort and feel of the Dualshock 4 wireless controller you’ve come to love”. It does this by adding “two programmable and highly tactile back buttons, allow[ing] you to utilize more of your hand to shorten your response time and gives you more flexibility in competitive gameplay”.

The attachment allows you to assign various buttons to the two back buttons, with multiple profiles, allowing for an in depth customisation of the controller. The buttons will provide tactical feedback, making them feel like a natural extension of the Dualshock 4. This has been achieved thanks to its in-house development by PlayStation – this isn’t a third party licensed creation, such as the Hori controller or Nacon Revolution Pro.

The Dualshock 4 Back Button Attachment was designed with competitive play in mind, and so it features “an integrated OLED display that provides real time information around button assignments”. For those of you who wish the Dualshock 4 had a little bit more customisability and functionality, but don't want to pay more than double the price for a Scuf controller, the Dualshock 4 Back button Attachment could serve as a good alternative.

The attachment will go on sale from the 14th of February 2020, and will cost €29.99 (UK pricing is TBD). More information can be found here.

At this point, it seems like Sony isn't even trying to keep its new PlayStation a secret anymore. Earlier this week, the exact specifications of the upcoming PS4 Neo came to light and now just a few days later, more information surrounding Sony's policies have come to light. For starters, the PS4 Neo will have a mandatory 1080p display requirement for all games from October onwards.

Sony is requiring all developers to ensure that games run or at least look better on the PS4 Neo compared to the base model, meaning no game can go below 1080p resolution. While older games can be patched with Neo support, all games from October onwards will be required to take advantage of the new hardware at launch, while also having a display mode that supports the original PS4.

ps4_1111

Digital Foundry's own sources have confirmed that there will be no online segregation between the PS4 and the Neo, which could potentially cause some balance issues with multiplayer games. For instance, if a multiplayer game runs at 30 frames per second on the original PS4 but 60 on the Neo, then that could be an advantage.

Save data will be cross-platform, all purchases will be cross-platform and the Dualshock 4 will still be the primary controller for both versions of the PS4. So you won't need to worry about getting new peripherals, or old PS4 games not running.

One thing that does seem clear at this point is that somebody over at Sony really likes The Matrix. First we were introduced to Project Morpheus, which has gone on to become PlayStation VR and now, the codename for this upgraded PS4 is ‘Neo', potentially hinting that Sony has had this planned for quite some time.

KitGuru Says: Nobody was really expecting Sony to upgrade its PS4 hardware mid-generation and when the first rumours hit, many didn't believe it. However, it now looks like this is definitely happening this year. What do you guys think of Sony's decision?

We're a couple days late to the party on this one, but guys, it looks quite likely that Sony's upcoming Dual Shock 4 controllers for the PlayStation 4, could be compatible with Windows, potentially letting you use the touchpad as a mouse – making this a very attractive proposition for Big Picture gamers.

This rumour first surfaced following on from PAX, where the Galak-Z developers 17-Bit, suggested that the PS4's controllers worked natively on Windows 7, with the OS picking it up as a generic “Wireless Controller” over Bluetooth. This was further confirmed by another Redditor who was able to test his pre-release DS4 controller out with a PC, finding it worked well with a total of 11 buttons detected.

He also released a video of it in action, but has since set the video to private.

ds4

The only caveat to this whole deal is whether this is simply because pre-release dev kits and controllers were designed to offer more of a hook up with the PC, in order to facilitate game development. This may still be the case, so take this rumour with a pinch of salt, but the possibilities are exciting.

Potentially this would make the DS4 a very attractive controller for PC gamers, thanks to its built in motion controller abilities and touchpad, making it more of an all in one that Microsoft's offering.

KitGuru Says: Would you guys consider buying a DS4 without the PS4 if this turns out to be true?
