Update: The Icelandic Prime Minister, Sigmundur Davíð Gunnlaugsson, has now officially announced his resignation. His deputy will continue on his stead until a new leader can be chosen.

The Panama Papers leak which has painted targets on the backs of many of the world's leading politicians with suggestions of corruption and money laundering, has caused a real headache for Icelandic Prime Minister Sigmundur Davíð Gunnlaugsson. With calls for an early election to be held, recent polls suggest the local Pirate Party could take control of the country in the near future.

Although politicians like British PM David Cameron and Russian President Vladimir Putin have been implicated in the scandal, for their father and friend's money laundering respectively, Gunnlaugsson has been personally implicated as part of the leak. He has been found in ownership of a company worth millions of pounds during Iceland's financial crisis and even sold it to his wife in 2009, for $1 to hide his involvement.

That firm also had interest in several banks that failed in the financial crash. Banks that Gunnlaugsson defended should not have to repay deposits owed to foreign creditors in full.

The company in question was known as Wintris and it operated since 2007, as an off-shore (and off the books) fund for Gunnlaugsson and his wife. He maintained a 50 per cent share in it for two years, before selling it to his wife for a pittance. However he never declared his involvement or financial benefit from owning a large stake in the firm, which is placing him in very hot water.

Just yesterday, some 22,000 people took to the streets of Iceland's capital, Reykjavik, to call for him to stand down. To put that into context, with a population of just 330,000, that's close to seven per cent of the entire country showing up.

So far Gunnlaugsson has refused to step down as some have suggested and with a coalition majority, he will be able to block calls for an early election if everyone toes the line. However, if some of his own party, or that of the coalition member Independence Party were to rebel, we could see a general election held in Iceland more than a year before it is expected.

Where things get really interesting, is how the political landscape in Iceland has changed since the 2013 election. Back then, the Pirate Party was a brand new entity and it still managed to garner three seats in parliament. Since then its popularity has soared, with all recent polls painting it as the most popular party in the country.

If an early election is held, the anti-corruption, pro-free speech, pro-sharing party, could well become the first Pirate majority in European politics, giving it a huge stage to broadcast its message.

KitGuru Says: If there isn't some way to force Gunnlaugsson to step down, there should be. Here's hoping the other politicians see that the writing is on the wall.

The details of more than 22,000 international recruits of terrorist group Daesh, have been revealed as part of a leak by a disgruntled former member of the organisation's internal security team. Of the total, four were said to come from the USA, while 16 Britons were found as part of the list of potential terrorists.

The leak of information includes the names of the individuals, their dates of birth, citizenships, phone numbers, addresses and in many cases blood types too. Most of the information comes from a form that all members are forced to complete as part of their admission as an international recruit.

In total, individuals from 51 countries were found, including European, American and Asian nations, though the vast majority came from middle-Eastern and African countries like Saudi Arabia (485), Tunisia (375) and Morocco (140).

The individual that leaked the documents to Sky News is known as Abu Hamed. He previously worked for Daesh's internal security team, which helps enforce the laws of the group. Initially converted from the Free Syrian army, Hamed became disillusioned with Daesh, after he claimed that the rules within the organisation had almost entirely collapsed.

He went on to say that he hoped leaking these details would lead to the end of Daesh and that it was currently restructuring and relocating much of its infrastructure, in order to focus more of its efforts overseas.

KitGuru Says: Even if not much comes from this than some new suspects appear on intelligence agencies radars, it's good to imagine potential recruits thinking twice about joining when their details might be made available for all to see.

Wikileaks has released a number of professional emails of current CIA director John Brennan, after they were hacked out of his AOL account by a hacker who in some cases is cited as being just 13 years old. Supposedly he gained access to the account through social engineering weaker accounts with other providers, before working his way up to the email account in question.

Although a personal account, some of the information contained within was secretive, as Brennan had forwarded emails to it from his CIA work account.

The emails include Brennan's SF86, a form that he had to fill out to gain his current position and containing a lot of detailed information about the man, including close family members and their contact information and even reveals unknown parts of his professional history.

It, like the other documents Wikileaks has unveiled so far, date from the latter parts of the last decade, during the transitionary period between and shortly after the presidential handover to Barack Obama. Some of the others include references to torture, whereby it is discussed how to make “future interrogation methods “compliant” and “legal”,” as well as a specific list of which methods would be considered illegal.

These include no forced nudity, beatings, electric shock, waterboarding, mock executions, or deprivation from food or water.

As the NYT points out, there isn't anything too damning or revealing in the documents. Brennan's past use of drugs and alcohol is pedestrian and there are no references to him being fired or curtailed for actions within his high-ranking positions. However this is likely to be just the tip of the iceberg, as Wikileaks and the hacker responsible are planning to release more documents in the coming days.

For his part, Brennan has condemned the hack, painting it as “malicious.”

Hackers that made off with the user account and financial details of some 40 million members of infidelity website, Ashey Madison, have made good on their threat and posted them online. The details, posted to a Dark Web address that is only accessibly by Tor, include usernames, passwords, account histories, addresses, phone numbers and details on any transactions on the site – though not credit card numbers.

“Time's up. Avid Life Media has failed to take down Ashley Madison and Established Men. We have explained the fraud, deceit and stupidity of ALM and their members. Now everyone gets to see their data,” reads the release that went along with the data dump.

The hackers behind it suggest that any users caught in the cross fire deal with the embarrassment and get over it. It also highlights how many fake female accounts are on Ashley Madison and suggests that many men who are members of the site don't have affairs, they simply try to.

One silver lining for those that do find themselves affected by the hack, is that their password is at least encrypted, meaning Ashley Madison didn't store them in plaintext like so many other hacked companies. However this is unlikely to please those that now have their names, email addresses and in some cases phone numbers linked with their posted fantasies.

Some of the emails found within the dump are government addresses also, suggesting a potentially brewing political scandal. However, as Wired points out, email confirmation was not necessary to set up an account, so many could be faked.

The hackers copied away the information from Ashley Madison last month and demanded that the site's parent company shut down many of its dating sites. The hackers appeared to take a moral disliking of the online properties, suggesting that Avid Life Media profited from the misery of others. However they also pointed out that Ashley Madison charged people to delete data, something it said was unscrupulous and in many cases untrue, as data was not deleted even after a payment was made.

Avid Life Media condemned the action and asked that people not consider this move hacktivisim: “[This] is an act of criminality. It is an illegal action against the individual members of AshleyMadison.com, as well as any freethinking people who choose to engage in fully lawful online activities,” it said in a statement.

KitGuru Says: As much as it always seems like a better idea to talk to your spouse than cheat on them, publishing details on users without knowing the context of their individual situations feels wrong.

Charging for account deletions is a scum move though.
