AMD and Lenovo have announced that they are working together on education solutions – powered by a new AMD 3015e CPU that offers up to 2 cores and 4 threads with a TDP of only 6W.

There's a great need for learning platforms. According to UNESCO “more than 1 billion students, over 90 percent of the world’s learners, have been impacted by school closures in 2020”. In response to this need, AMD and Lenovo have worked together to produce the Lenovo 100e 2nd Gen and the Lenovo 300e 2nd Gen laptops. Both are powered by the AMD 3015e Mobile Processor with Radeon Graphics.

Those who are often in a rush will be glad to hear that the new laptops are equipped with Quick Charge technology, which can charge up to 80% in sixty minutes. When fully charged, these laptops are rated for 12 hours of battery life.

Both laptops will be made available in September 2020. The Lenovo 100e 2nd will start from $219 whilst the Lenovo 300e 2nd Gen will start from $299.

KitGuru says: Are you many of you looking for a new laptop for the next semester? If so, what are your thoughts on these new laptops from Lenovo?

Acer has expanded its TravelMate range of notebooks with the addition of the clamshell style TravelMate B3 and the convertible TravelMate Spin B3. Both new systems are designed to be the perfect learning companion for students and are compliant with the U.S Military Standard MIL-STD 81OG for durability.

PornHub is looking to combat the idea that pornography harms the minds of the impressionable, by offering an educational resource of its own. Launched as a small, sub-site within the main Pornhub domain, the Sexual Wellness Center is filling up with articles, videos and Q&A resources, all in the aid of improving sexual knowledge and reducing stigmas surrounding it.

With many governments continuing to make a lot of noise about the dangers of pornography – despite studies like OfCom's own countering those claims – and an ever increasing number of sexual education websites being caught up in filters, PornHub is looking to create a new hub for information on sex. Headed by therapist and author, Dr. Laurie Betito, the site looks to offer in-depth advice for individuals, and broader topics that cover everything from STDs, to relationships and mutual pleasure.

[yframe url='http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lwq6EPO4vMY']

As it stands, the site doesn't have a whole lot of content, as it's still relatively fresh. However it's already kicked things off with a broad range of topics. Some of the articles already available on the site include: Achieving enduring love and intimacy, what is consent?, Trans 101 and how to have safer sex. While the latter topic is more common place in schools and other educational mediums, the others are far less so and show PornHub's interest in promoting healthy sexual contact, rather than just how to avoid pregnancy and disease.

The site is also accepting questions for Sexual Wellness Center head, Dr. Betito, so if you have any questions yourself, feel free to fire them off to see what she says.

KitGuru Says: I hope more schools and parents can see how sexual education beyond the basics is important. The only “dangers,” of porn come from a lack of real education. Teaching young adults about the importance of consent, of mutual enjoyment is just as important in explaining about pregnancy and disease.

Despite the company's new focus on the Edge browser, Microsoft does still have Internet Explorer knocking around with plenty of users. In an effort to keep pushing forward with the browser, Microsoft recently announced that by next year, it will no longer be supporting older versions of IE, urging users of the browser to upgrade to the latest version in order to receive security updates.

Internet Explorer is still widely used, particularly in schools and businesses here in the UK and other parts of the world but if those users don't update to Internet Explorer 11 before the 12th of January, they will be left open to malicious attacks and exploits that Microsoft won't be patching up.

Internet-Explorer-takes-forever-to-open-Fix

Obviously Microsoft also highlighted the other reasons to upgrade to Internet Explorer 11, or even the Edge browser, as both offer improved performance and security by design. Enterprise users can be slow to update at times due to fear of any software incompatibilities, but Microsoft solved this problem with IE 11, which has a legacy mode, allowing for compatibility for older web-based apps.

Paid technical support for older IE browsers will also end on the 12th of January, so even paying customers will need to move on in order to stay up to date security-wise. There has been a huge rise in cyber crime over the last few years, so being as secure as possible is generally a pretty good idea.

KitGuru Says: I don't imagine many enthusiast home users are running Internet Explorer at all but this is still pretty important information to spread around. Some people may just use whatever browser their system ships with and may not realise they have to update.

Microsoft's Hololens hasn't quite captured the online world's imagination like the Oculus Rift, but augmented reality has just as much potential as virtual reality in the right hands. With Microsoft's Hololens, it wants people to see it as much more than just an alternative to Google Glass. In a new demonstration of what it looks like to use, Microsoft highlights its potential as a teaching tool, giving medical students the chance to view human anatomy up close and personal, without having to deal with a cadaver.

hololensdemo

Of course real world experience with a human body is often going to trump digital hologram versions, but when it comes to learning the theory of the human body, Hololens has a lot of potential. Giving students the ability to strip away layers from the body to look at various aspects, before reversing it and looking at the surface, is something that just isn't possible with real world bodies.

[yframe url='http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SKpKlh1-en0′]

Highlighted labels and information that's available at the touch of a button makes for a much more detailed learning experience than if a person was merely listening to a lecturer describe a picture. Even a 3D model on a 2D display isn't as useful, since it can only be manipulated through traditional controllers, rather than by gestures which are much more natural for humans.

This isn't something that could be applied just to medicine though, but all of the sciences. Art history is another example highlighted in the video, letting students view art work in three full dimensions rather than in books or on screens. They can analyse and study some of history's greatest pieces as they would have been seen when first created.

KitGuru Says: As much as growing up with the internet was cool, I'm pretty jealous of the next generation of children who experience history, art and sciences through virtual and augmented reality. I think it's going to capture a lot of imaginations being able to see all of that up close.

The current system used to download and install apps on iOS doesn't really work well with schools. IT admins are currently needed to generate and manage hundreds of separate. unique Apple IDs in order to use iPads in schools for educational purposes.

However, Apple is looking to change its current system and make it easier for schools to use iPads by dropping its Apple ID requirement. According to an email obtained by 9to5Mac, Apple will soon allow admins in education to download new apps without assigning an Apple ID to the device.

ipad-air

The schools will still have an option to disable downloads from students. Additionally, students under 13 currently require parental permission to set up an Apple ID even on a school iPad. Starting some time next year, schools will be able to set up and manage IDs for younger students, without needing to formally obtain parental permission.

Apple thinks that this will make it easier to enroll, manage and support a large deployment of iPads intended for educational purposes and reduce the amount of steps schools have to go through to set up its iPads.

KitGuru Says: The current set up system for using iPads in schools sounds like a bit of a nightmare. These changes will likely make iPads more desirable for educational use, in the US at least.

At the behest of the government and through their own initiative, British ISPs have begun firing up their own pornography filters, but as expected, on top of not being the all encompassing blockers that they were designed to be, they've done what we all knew they would do and started blocking legitimate content like sex education websites and women's abuse advice group sites.

This was discovered in an investigation by BBC News Night, which tried out each of the filters by attempting to connect to 68 different pornographic website, as well as sites that contain content that discusses sexuality, but not pornography. The TalkTalk filter was found to be one of the worst, failing to block seven per cent of all porn websites tested, as well as blocking sex education site BishUK.com and the Edinburgh Women's Rape and Sexual Abuse Centre, listing them both as pornographic.

BT's filter – which was turned on this week – was quite bad too, blocking instead of just porn, a domestic abuse helpline, a Scottish sexual health website and a domestic abuse help site. Sky's service was more effective in blocking the real pornography, but got very over zealous and also blocked six sites that purport to help with porn addiction – hardly the sort of site you want to block when you're trying to make porn harder to access.

Victoria Shotbolt, chief executive of the Parent Zone, said: “It's great that the four ISPs have got together and are doing an awareness-raising campaign. But it isn't even starting to be enough.” She went on to say that she doesn't want parents to think that these filters will be enough – that they should learn how to protect their children from pornography online.

pornfilter
You'd have thought that sort of message would be a far more effective one than implementing these filters in the first place.

The owner of sex-ed website Bish wasn't quite as happy with the filters as Miss Shotbolt though, saying to the BBC: “They might fix my site in the short-term but what about all the other sites that are out there for young people, not just sex education sites… who are TalkTalk to say what is allowed and isn't?”

KitGuru Says: I could understand if these filters were only “opt-out” when used on public Wi-Fi, as that could really be accessed by anybody, but in a person's home, it's their responsibility to filter the content they see, not the government's and not ISPs. Blocks of any kind, be it torrent websites or pornography is censorship in the worst possible way and the collateral damage it's already having on education is the most glaring reason as to why these sorts of filters are a terrible idea. Like the Pirate Bay blocks, they will do nothing to stop a determined kid from seeing porn, but they will stop those that were simply browsing for a bit of sexual education.

Teach parents how to filter if they want it, but leave the decision on whether to enable it up to them.

While most local system companies have evaporated, Viglen continues to bang in the results – including a whopping £8m revenue for June alone. How does one of the last remaining giants of the UK PC industry do it?  KitGuru goes back to school to see what can be learnt from Viglen.

Launched 6 years before IBM unleashed the PC on an unsuspecting world, Viglen has been servicing customers in the business, education, health, local government and voluntary sector for a very long time.

Key to its success, has been Viglen's ability to get included in the all important ‘Official supplier' lists for government departments and educational establishments. This kind of ‘catalogue' might only have 4 official suppliers for technology equipment, which helps ensure that revenues remain strong in tough times.

From what we can tell, the sun always shines on Viglen. Especially in June.

In 2010, following a failed attempt to mate with Stone Computers, Viglen posted just under £70m in revenue – of which net profit was just over £500,000.

Roll the clock forward one year and revenues plummeted to just over £60m but, through strong management, excellent financial control and the efforts of a dedicated workforce, Managing Director Bordan Tkachuk managed to boost his net profit to more than £1.5m.

Impressive stuff.

Viglen is unlikely to post £8m a month for the whole year, but it is likely to surpass last year's revenues and nail a solid profit. Surely an education for any of its competitors that complain about having a hard time.

When he's not busy shaping the future of the UK computer market, Bordan has also been one of Alan Sugar's aggressors on The Apprentice.

From a 'me too' manufacturer to 'PCs costing under £1 a year to run', things have been changing positively under Bordan's control.

KitGuru says: Increasing profitability in a global downturn? Impressive stuff. The guys running the place should buy themselves McLaren street cars to celebrate.
