A few weeks back we heard rumors that Ubisoft may be giving Assassin's Creed a break this year, with no main installation to the series set to release this year. Now this move has been confirmed but Ubisoft isn't just pushing back the next Assassin's Creed game, it is also re-examining the whole franchise and so we may see some changes to the way the series is handled in the future.

Writing in a blog post today, Ubisoft said: “This year, we also are stepping back and re-examining the Assassin’s Creed franchise. As a result, we’ve decided that there will not be a new Assassin’s Creed game in 2016. Since the release of Assassin’s Creed Unity, we’ve learned a lot based on your feedback. We’ve also updated our development processes and recommitted to making Assassin’s Creed a premier open-world franchise.”

“We’re taking this year to evolve the game mechanics and to make sure we’re delivering on the promise of Assassin’s Creed offering unique and memorable gameplay experiences that make history everyone’s playground.”

The next Assassin's Creed game will launch in 2017 and will be based in Egypt. According to earlier rumors, the game will be going for more of an open-world ‘Witcher' feel so we could end up seeing a very different game compared to past entries in the series.

We still don't know when next year's Assassin's Creed will launch, perhaps Ubisoft will keep it in development until holiday season next year, or perhaps Assassin's Creed will now be a Summer franchise, either way, we should find out more later on in the year.

KitGuru Says: Assassin's Creed was in need of a good shake-up. While I did enjoy Syndicate, it was still a pretty standard AC game with familiar gameplay and mechanics. Hopefully, when the franchise returns next year, it will introduce some big changes. Do you guys think Ubisoft is doing the right thing by skipping 2016?

It looks like Ubisoft might be giving Assassin's Creed a break this year, with reports suggesting that there won't be a new game in the franchise until 2017. This once again seems to be partially in response to the backlash against Assassin's Creed Unity, which has had a lasting effect on the franchise despite Assassin's Creed: Syndicate offering a much-improved experience.

The rumours originally popped up on the NeoGAF forums but Kotaku did some digging and found five anonymous sources to confirm the information. According to the report, 2017's Assassin's Creed will be based in Egypt but Ubisoft might be looking to spin this off into its own trilogy just like the Ezio series of games. Other rumoured locations include Rome and Greece.

The initial post claims that this will be a “complete revamp for the series”, apparently the developers are also aiming for a “Witcher feel, with player progression, a freeform combat system” as well as the return of a horse and boats. This game will be made by the team behind Black Flag, which was a very popular entry to the series.

Kotaku has a good track record with Assassin's Creed leaks so this may turn out to be accurate. However, we probably won't know for sure for a few more months.

KitGuru Says: Taking a year off of the main Assassin's Creed games seems like a good idea, it will give the creative team a chance to make some changes and hopefully end up with a better game by the end of it. What do you think of this? Should Assassin's Creed take a break this year?

Youtube has been banned in Egypt for one month, as a protest for its streaming of what the ruling body describes as, “anti-muslim” film, “Innocence of Muslims.” This 14 minute trailer for a movie that has never seen the light of day, has drawn ire from much of the middle east, for portraying Muslims in a negative light.

The blocking of the entire site has led human rights campaigners to call this a regression in freedoms of expression in the country. Others, according to the Guardian, have suggested that many Egyptians will see this as an over the top reaction and could lead them to “lose respect for the rule of law.”

How will we get Egyptian Gangnam Style to a billion views now?

Of course with a lot of experience getting around blocks here in Europe, it seems likely that many Egyptians that want to watch a quick cat video will be able to do so easily enough, as the process is a simple one. However it isn't the only country that is currently dealing with a Youtube block thanks to the Innocence of Muslims trailer. Pakistan also has a block in place that was temporarily lifted in December, but quickly reinstated.

KitGuru Says: While I can see why some people may dislike the idea of the Innocence of Muslims trailer, it still seems ridiculous to condemn millions of other videos alongside it. It's so, so poorly made. It would be the equivalent of getting offended by a recording of a children's nativity play.
