Since the ousting of Ellen Pao at discussion site Reddit, new CEO (and original founder) Steve Huffman has been adamant about improving lines of communication between site admins and the community. To that end he spent a lot of time late yesterday discussing just what is ok and what is not ok, for people to post.

This comes following some decisions by the site's admins to take down subreddits that were considered hateful, like r/fatpeoplehate. This caused consternation on the site as it was thought that any subforum which admins disagreed with would be torn down. This was compounded when Pao was quoted saying that Reddit was never supposed to be a “bastion of free speech.” This, despite the fact that racist subreddits were allowed to continue existing.

In his new address, Huffman clarified that the difference between the groups banned and those that weren't (and will not be) is that the former were involved in hateful actions, whereas the latter were just considered hateful opinions.

Moving forward, prohibited content includes:

  • Spam.
  • Anything illegal (though not the discussion of illegal activities).
  • ‘Doxxing' or the publishing of anyone's private information against their permission.
  • Any incitement of violence or harm against individuals or groups.
  • Any harassment, abuse or bullying of individuals or groups.
  • Sexually suggestive content involving children.

He also said that a number of subreddits would be investigated to see that they comply with the above rules. If not, they too will be banned.

However, Reddit will also be introducing a new content system which will expand the current NSFW labelling. While not in place yet, the idea is to create a classified and opt-in system for certain content that could be considered offensive. Some of the more controversial subreddits that deal with pictures of corpses, or racist views will be classified as such.

While this will mean more policing than Reddit has taken part in over the past few years, Huffman did clarifiy: “One thing that isn’t up for debate is why Reddit exists. Reddit is a place to have open and authentic discussions….  because people have more open and authentic discussions when they aren’t worried about the speech police knocking down their door.”

KitGuru Says: Regardless of Reddit's future, I agree with Huffman's final statement there. That's why it's so important we try not to have government's looking over our shoulder.

It has been quite the week for Reddit and its staff, following this week's massive moderator protest ,the company's interim CEO, Ellen Pao, has resigned, with Reddit co-founder, Steve Huffman ready to step in and take the reins immediately.

According to reports, this was a mutual decision between Pao and the Reddit board of directors. This follows a petition calling for Pao's resignation, which was signed by over 200,000 people. It was clear that the mods and community at large were unhappy with the way Reddit was being handled, fuelling quite a bit of backlash.

Steve Huffman is apparently looking forward to returning to Reddit, after founding it a decade ago. The company will apparently begin focussing on strengthening its position on mobile and growing the platform.

Pao did release a resignation letter, pointing out that the board was pushing for growth in ways that the former CEO believed would go against the core principles of Reddit: “So why am I leaving? Ultimately, the board asked me to demonstrate higher user growth in the next six months than I believe I can deliver while maintaining reddit’s core principles.”

Reddit looked for a second like it might go the way of its popular predecessor Digg last week. Following the out-of-the-blue firing of AMA co-ordinator and director of talent at the site, Victoria Taylor, moderators locked up some of the most popular subreddits in the world, causing a big cut in the site's traffic and therefore advertising impressions for that day and several afterwards. It made a big enough impact that the CEO of Reddit, Ellen Pao, has now issued an apology for the sacking.

Although people who had been dealing with Taylor for years were upset by the announcement, it was the lack of communication with moderators that angered the site's user base so much. Several AMAs had been scheduled for the day she was let go and without any heads up from Reddit admins, they were left without a viable method of organising the conversations.

This lack of communication has been something that mods have complained about for years and it's the big thing that Pao focused on with her apology.

“We screwed up. Not just on July 2, but also over the past several years,” Pao said in a top level post in r/announcements. “We haven’t communicated well, and we have surprised moderators and the community with big changes. We have apologized and made promises to you, the moderators and the community, over many years, but time and again, we haven’t delivered on them”

Moving forward she said there were plans to make big changes to the discussion site. Firstly new tools will be given to moderators to help manage their communities. As it stands, many of them use third party tools to enable higher level control of the subreddits, but in the future Pao promises Reddit management will be made easier.

Secondly, a new “moderator advocate” had been created to act as a go between for the site and its volunteer moderators around the world. Admins will also have more of a direct line to various communities. Pao also announced that an option will be created for search to support existing moderation workflows.

In the wake of the initial firing, a petition was started asking for Pao to step down from her role. At the time of writing it's garnered just shy of 200,000 signatures.

KitGuru Says: Pao has previously been criticised for suggesting in an interview that most Redditors don't care about the recent events. While that may be true, as the top commentators point out, that's why this is particularly dangerous for the site. The vast majority not caring means that they will simply follow the content creators and moderators if they change their regular site. And they likely wouldn't come back either.
