Last year, the shutdown of Nostalrius caused quite a bit of uproar from fans of vanilla World of Warcraft. Over the years, Blizzard had been adamant about leaving the past in the past, but with hundreds of thousands of players on unofficial servers, the outcry became difficult to ignore. Now this year, Blizzard confirmed plans to give fans what they want in the form of ‘World of Warcraft Classic', causing other unofficial vanilla server projects to rethink their stance.

Over the years, unofficial vanilla servers were out on a mission to not only provide a home for classic WoW fans, but to prove to Blizzard that the interest was there. That point has since been proven, so where does that leave these unofficial projects? Well, Elysium will be sticking around for the time being. In a post on the project's forum, Shenna, one of the developers, wrote:

“As we have already announced, we are launching our new realm Nighthaven. This decision is not changing. It will take Blizzard a very long time to prepare and launch their legacy servers. In fact, it is widely speculated that it will take at least a year. This fits our timeline perfectly, as Nighthaven's fast progression system is scheduled to last about a year. This means that anyone who wants to practice their levelling strategies, raid strategies, form a guild, or simply enjoy Vanilla, will be able to do so leading right up to their launch.”

Once Blizzard's official legacy server launches, Elysium will move on to providing a dedicated version of WoW as it was when The Burning Crusade expansion first launched. Going forward, Elysium intends to “provide whatever services the community desires should Blizzard not meet expectations”.

As Eurogamer points out though, Light's Hope, another unofficial WoW server will be shutting down when Blizzard rolls out World of Warcraft Classic: “In short, if Blizzard's offering is a genuine, progressive, classic experience that falls within the scope of what we as a team have been working to achieve, we intend to progress the timelines as necessary to allow our players to finish their experience on Light's Hope and to eventually shut the servers down at the time of the official launch”.

We still don't know a ton about what Blizzard plans to do with World of Warcraft Classic. We know that vanilla WoW is on the table, but we don't know about dedicated servers for some of the earlier expansions, like The Burning Crusade, or Wrath of the Litch King. A launch time table has also yet to be provided, so fans of the vanilla game could be waiting a while for official support. With Warcraft's ‘Battle for Azeroth' expansion on the way next year, it seems likely that we won't see Classic until that launch has taken place.

KitGuru Says: World of Warcraft Classic was one of the major announcements at Blizzcon this year, but it could be a while before we see it in action. Do any of you currently play WoW on an unofficial server? Will you be switching to WoW Classic when it launches?

World of Warcraft legacy servers are popular, offering the vanilla experience of the game before its universe was expanded via expansion packs. Usually these projects are shut down due to Blizzard’s intervention, but this time the Elysium server suffered at the hands of the developers themselves after an embezzlement scandal.

The Elysium Project was founded to revive old builds of World of Warcraft that were buried under the many adjustments Blizzard has made over the years. Elysium ultimately helped one of the most popular legacy servers to date, Nostalrius, find its feet after Blizzard sent its most prominent cease and desist letter in years before eclipsing it entirely, resulting in Nostalrius developers closing up shop to avoid becoming a piracy server.

Since then, Elysium has been the go-to for vanilla enthusiasts. That is, at least, until two of the developers had been caught red handed embezzling donations meant to keep the server alive, using the money for “personal financial reasons.”

“The Elysium Project as it exists today is no longer a viable project due to the systemic problem of lack of oversight on those with the most access to the servers,” reads a statement posted by former Elysium members. “Due to failures to uphold the projects ideals and integrity, the Elysium Project is being dissolved and relaunched out of the control of those who have abused the trust of the staff, community, and legacy movement as a whole.”

The remainder of the statement describes how one former team member, Shenna, took approximately €2,000 of the donations for personal use, whereas another member, Crogge, started a gold-selling business tied to the project.

In individual joint statements, both Shenna and Crogge confirmed that the allegations were true, attempting to place reasoning, or rather excuses, behind the actions.

“Yes, due to mine and my family’s personal problems, I did receive some money for a personal use, but at the end of the day it helped to spend more time here maintaining the servers,” wrote Sheena. “We didn’t want to resort to [gold] sales, but donations were extremely limited, and it was either we do limited sales or we shut down Elysium,” Sheena continued in a separate joint statement.

“That is not an excuse, just the reality of the situation,” said Sheena and Crogge. “This was not known (neither was the financial struggles we were having) by most of the Elysium team. We do not mean to defend this position, only be more upfront about it.”

This has resulted in Elysium dissolving, with former members taking the server data to found Light’s Hope, dedicated to continuing the old legacy server.

“The core team that are stepping down from the Elysium Project are coalescing around the foundational ideals this project is supposed to represent and are relaunching/rebranding as Lights Hope. The servers will be relaunched with the backups created prior to the posting of this announcement, though there may be some data not saved that encompasses an hour or two prior.”

Sheena and Crogge have since said that they feel betrayed by the former members abandoning the project and taking the data, while they both plan to continue to work on getting Elysium working again despite the smaller team.

KitGuru Says: It’s a sad turn of events for the fans who have poured their love, support and finances into helping a fan-made server being the best it can be. Unfortunately, that is the nature of supporting unofficial or yet-to-be-realised products, so please proceed with caution when investing your money. Will you be avoiding Elysium and the perpetrators from now on?

If you thought Elysium was dull, overlong and had only one (barely) passable feature – the super power making exoskeleton – you'd be right. But if you also thought that it'll be a long time before we're able to put together that sort of technology, you'd be wrong. At the start of the World Cup this year, a paralyzed teenager will kick the first ceremonial ball, aided only by a brain powered exoskeleton.

Ok they're not going to be punching people really hard or whatever else it was good for besides the poster shot – seriously did Matt Damon do anything interesting with that suit in the movie? I barely remember and I only watched it two weeks ago – but the fact that someone who previously couldn't locomote themselves can then stand and complete a maneuver that involves standing on one leg and distributing weight and power from one to the other, should be very impressive.

This is all thanks to the Walk Again Project, a non-profit collaboration between a bunch of different educational organisations and medical science initiatives, which developed “microwires,” which are able to detect very specific electrical signals from the brain and translate that to movement in the exoskeleton. So far these wires have been implanted in the brains of rats and monkeys to achieve the same results, but with further improvements it's set to be applied to a human.

Never fear though, those wires won't be going into the teen's brain. They'll instead be using a non-invasive head piece that performs the same function as the wires. Before being equipped with it though, the young person taking on the role of our first cyborg will be trained in virtual reality to use their new limbs.

KitGuru Says: It's good to know that if we ever bump into a Xenomorph alien race, that we're heading towards a time where we'll easily be able to box a queen into submission with a giant robot cargo lifter.
