Kena: Bridge of Spirits was the debut title from Ember Lab – known best previously for their work on a number of animations including a viral short film based on The Legend of Zelda. Released in 2021 as a PlayStation 5 console exclusive, the award-winning action-adventure title has now been revealed to have managed to recoup all its costs in the game’s first month on market.

In a report published by Gamesindustry.biz focused on the success of Ember Lab in their transition from animation to game development, the publication revealed that the studio’s debut title – Kena: Bridge of Spirits – broke even within one month following its launch back in September of 2021.

Speaking on what’s next for the team, Ember Lab’s co-founders Josh Grier and Michael Grier revealed that they plan on somewhat maintaining the studio’s current size and scope, saying:

“I guess you can call us aging gamers, people who have less time to play things, so things that are more approachable from a scope perspective are always more appealing to us. We'll try to do something a little bit more ambitious as we grow, but we're still trying to be conscious of making something that's digestible and something that we will want to play as gamers right now in our current pace of life with kids and stuff.”

Kena: Bridge of Spirits drew the attention of many when it was first revealed thanks in part to the game’s extremely high-quality animations and a Pixar-like aesthetic – giving the action-adventure title a cinematic flare.

With a 10-20 hour long campaign, Kena: Bridge of Spirits did not out stay its welcome and managed to offer a consistent quality from beginning to end. It will be interesting to see what the team are working on next – especially in the wake of these most recent comments.

Sony’s PS5 reveal event saw the announcement of many new potential IPs. One of the most interesting and visually impressive was Kena: Bridge of Spirits from Ember Lab – the debut title from the animation studio. Kena has officially been confirmed as a success, with Ember Lab now becoming a full-time game development studio.

In an interview by Bloomberg/Jason Schreier, brothers Mike and Josh Grier of Ember Lab were asked about the success of their first title, which launched back in September.

According to the Griers, the game has already recouped its development costs within the first month, cementing it as a success. Furthermore, Sony also appears to be happy with the sales performance of the console exclusive, with Josh Grier saying “It's hard to tell what's a huge success. Sony's happy.”

As mentioned, prior to Kena: Bridge of Spirits, Ember Lab was purely an animation studio, with some of their biggest work being YouTube shorts. It is therefore impressive to see them knock it out of the park on their first attempt. The success of Kena has meant that Ember Lab is now going full-time on game development, with Josh Grier confirming that “We're not going back to commercials.”

While very little is known about the team’s next project, they did confirm that it will be a narrative-focused affair, similar to Kena. Considering the fact that Kena: Bridge of Spirits was the studio’s first game, its success and quality is impressive. It will be interesting to see what the team can now do with that success under their belt.

Kena: Bridge of Spirits recently released to a positive reception from both critics and fans alike – a welcome result seeing as how the title is developer Ember Lab’s first video game release. As part of this, they have now promised to offer post-launch support and content for the “foreseeable future.”

In an interview with IGN (and as transcribed by GamingBolt), Ember Lab’s co-founder Mike Grier was asked about the future of Kena: Bridge of Spirits, to which they responded saying “We definitely want to support the game. We know that people love photo mode and the combat, so we're thinking about things we do to sort of expand some new combat scenarios, or maybe some additional content in the future featured around combat. We want to make some updates to photo mode. People have been asking for certain features that would be easy to do.”

Being the team’s first game, it seems as though their post-launch plans are relatively modest in nature, not wanting to bite off more than they can chew, with Grier saying “So yeah, we'll definitely be supporting Kena for a while. You know, we are definitely a small team, and we're very excited to see people playing the game and responding to it. So yeah, we're listening. We're listening to feedback, listening to what people have to say, and we'll be here, supporting the game for the next… foreseeable future.”

For the team’s first effort, Kena: Bridge of Spirits has been embraced with a great deal of positivity. Ember Lab will undoubtedly be busy fixing technical issues, bugs and more over the coming months. With the game being relatively short however, it is encouraging and exciting to see the team thinking beyond this, wanting to expand the content and give players more time in the world of Kena.

When Sony held its PlayStation 5 reveal event back in June, one of the most visually impressive titles was Kena: Bridge of Spirits. Announced to be a timed PlayStation exclusive, the action-adventure title evoked visuals similar to that of a modern Pixar film. Originally intended to launch in 2020, the game’s developers have now announced that the title has been pushed back to Q1 2021.

Making the announcement on Twitter, the studio behind Kena: Bridge of Spirits – Ember Lab – said “[we are] overwhelmed and humbled by the positive response and outpouring of support for Kena: Bridge of Spirits. Your kind words and excitement for the game have been an inspiration to the team.”

They continued, “This year has brought many challenges and our transition to working from home has caused development to move slower than we hoped. For this reason, we have made the difficult decision to delay the release of Kena: Bridge of Spirits to Q1, 2021. We have not made this decision lightly, but feel it is best for the game and well-being of the team.”

The studio explained further, saying: “We will use this time to give the game the polish it deserves and deliver an experience that meets our vision and your expectations. We look forward to sharing more about Kena in the coming months and delivering an amazing experience early next year.”

While it is undoubtedly a shame to see Kena: Bridge of Spirits get delayed, it is certainly not the first title to face development troubles thanks to COVID-19. Hopefully, come its release in Q1 2021, the game delivers on the promise of its impressive debut.
