Phanteks has made some of our favourite PC cases over the last few years, particularly when it comes to high-end cases. Last week, we saw the launch of the new wallet-friendly Eclipse P400 AIR range but now, we are back to looking at the high end, thanks to the launch of the Enthoo Luxe 2.

The Enthoo Luxe 2 is a full tower chassis with enough space for even the most extreme systems, including support for two PCs in one case. As you would expect, up to E-ATX (or even SSi-EEB) motherboards are supported, in addition to room for graphics cards up to 503mm long- not that many of those exist. If you wanted to, you could mount two GPUs vertically and run them in SLI.

In terms of fan support, the Luxe 2 can be configured to support up to 15 120mm fans at once, or eight 140mm fans. With all of that fan support, you would also expect great radiator support, which is present here for custom liquid-cooling enthusiasts. There is the option for up to four radiators in this case depending on size, although at maximum, you'll get two 480mm units, or three 360mm units in one system build.

The internal layout of the case is modular, so you can remove or add certain mounts and make changes as needed. The back of the case boasts industry-leading cable management, with tons of velcro channels to route cables and keep things tidy, in addition to the usual rubber grommets.

The Phanteks Enthoo Luxe 2 also comes with a large tempered glass side window and a subtle RGB LED strip on the front panel. It is an expensive case for an expensive system, coming in at £184.99 here in the UK.

KitGuru Says: I've been using a first-gen Enthoo Evolv for some time myself but I am tempted to upgrade to something a bit bigger. The Enthoo Luxe 2 looks like it might be a perfect next step. Are any of you planning to put together a new rig this year? What do you think of the Enthoo Luxe 2 so far?

Phanteks has released a budget PC case with a model code that suggests it is a junior version of the Enthoo Pro. In fact the Pro M (M for mid-tower) is a hybrid of the Pro and the recent Enthoo ATX, with a number of changes to keep the price as low as possible.

The best thing is to consider the Pro-M as the frame of the £140 Evolv ATX minus that expensive cladding. Instead you get a plastic front panel and fairly basic steel side panels that are reminiscent of the Enthoo Pro. Removing the aluminium would obviously save on the bill of materials but Phanteks wanted to go further so they have pretty much removed the accessories. You get a single 140mm fan at the rear of the case and the bare minimum of drive bays which raises the obvious question of whether Phanteks has made sensible cuts or gone bonkers to get the price as low as possible.

We have told to expect the Pro-M will be priced at £59.99 which sounds very competitive for an enthusiast case and puts the Pro-M head-to-head with the NZXT S340.

At Computex we saw the Pro-M in Titanium Green which looked drop dead gorgeous. Tragically our review sample came in Brushed Black which looks better than a plastic panel with a mock aluminium finish has any right to look. In any other context we would congratulate Phanteks on the look of the Pro-M but this time we're going to say ‘Titanium Green' and pull a disappointed face.

The side panels of the Pro-M are plain steel without any sound deadening material and the window in the main panel is smaller than other windows we have seen from Phanteks. Cosmetically it does a decent job but there is no attempt to deliver a Wow factor. Indeed the appearance of the Pro-M reinforces the budget nature of this case.

Specifications:

  • Motherboard support: E-ATX (up to 264mm wide), ATX, Micro-ATX, Mini-ITX.
  • Expansion slots: 7.
  • Included fans: 1x 140mm rear exhaust.
  • Fan mounts: 3x 120mm or 2x 140mm front, 3x 120mm or 2x 140mm roof, 1x 120mm/140mm rear.
  • 5.25″ drive bays: 1.
  • Internal drive bays: 7x 2.5”/3.5 (two supplied) 3x 2.5″ (one supplied).
  • Dimensions: 480mm high x 235mm wide x 500mm deep.

Remove the side panels and pull off the front panel and you'll be able to see most of the features with a single glance. There is one optical drive bay which can be removed to open up more cooling space at the front and top of the case. There are three positions to mount the single Drop n' Lock SSD bay but if you want a second or third bay you'll have to lay out some cash on accessories. Similarly there are two 2.5”/3.5 drive caddies in the lower compartment in front of the power supply, but if you want to mount more drives using the modular Enthoo ATX system you'll have to buy the necessary drive bays.

That is pretty much the essence of the Pro-M. If you need to buy a fan to replace the ‘missing' front fan or you want extra drive bays then you are missing out on part of the appeal of the Pro-M as this will inevitably raise the cost.

On the other hand the Pro-M has some tricks up its sleeve that have been borrowed from the Evolv ATX. Remove the lower drive bays, open the hatch in the power supply cover and remove the optical drive bay and your options for cooling are almost limitless. You have room for a colossal custom loop or two all-in-one coolers or pretty much any hardware you fancy installing.

Testing
To put this case through its cooling paces we will be using a test system consisting of an Intel Core i7-4770K, Sapphire Radeon R9 290 and multiple storage drives. This system allows us to produce a substantial amount of heat and effectively test the Phanteks Enthoo Pro M‘s cooling capabilities.

For stress testing we use a mixture of Prime95 and FurMark to create the maximum heat output. Prime95′s ‘Small FFTs’ setting allows us to stress our CPU. FurMark’s ‘GPU Burn-in’ mode creates the maximum amount of load our GPU is ever likely to see.

Test System:

  • Processor: 3.9GHz Intel Core i7-4770K
  • Motherboard: ASRock Z97 Killer
  • CPU cooler: Corsair H110i 240mm
  • Memory: AMD Radeon 1600MHz RAM
  • Graphics card: Sapphire Tri-X R9 290
  • Power supply: Seasonic Platinum Fanless 520W
  • Storage drives: Samsung 840 SSD
  • OS: Windows 8.1 64-bit.

Phanteks Enthoo Pro M Temperatures KitGuru Review

Assess cooling
Cooling in the Pro-M is good. The Pro-M has a power supply cover however it is perforated and doesn't prevent heat rising from your PSU and heating the motherboard compartment.

The open nature of the case with free flow from the filter at the front straight through to the 140mm fan at the rear is impeccable. Add in a liquid cooler at the top and the air has no problem flowing and exiting.

Acoustic Performance Test Procedures:

  • We placed our Digital Sound Level Meter one metre away from the case.
  • The case fans are set to maximum speed.
  • The CPU cooler’s fans are deactivated.
  • The Phanteks Enthoo Pro M's default fan configuration is: 1x 140mm rear exhaust fans.

Assess noise
At the most basic level the Pro-M is effectively silent as the 140mm fan is very quiet. Choose your CPU cooler carefully, as we did with the Corsair H100i and you end up with a very quiet PC.

Closing Thoughts

We like the Phanteks Enthoo Pro-M and admire the way Phanteks has kept the price so low. On the downside the side panels and window are nothing special. They are certainly adequate for a £60 case but might not meet the approval of the enthusiast market.

Perhaps the biggest question mark over the design of the Pro-M is that the likeliest customer is the home builder who wants a good deal and we doubt they will use the facility to build a custom cooling loop. It seems likely to us that most people using a Pro-M will simply install a motherboard, cooler, power supply and drive which makes perfect sense but also misses a trick or two.

Pros:

  • Low price
  • Ability to add cooling galore, including a custom loop.
  • Full height dust filter at the front.
  • Top magnetic dust filter.
  • Dust filter for PSU intake.
  • Sliding mount for top liquid cooler.
  • Hook and loop cable management straps.
  • Cable grommets are well located.
  • Smart appearance.
  • Power supply cover.

Cons:

  • Side panels are flexy and rather basic.
  • Smaller window than Evolv ATX.
  • Bare minimum of drive bays to keep costs low.
  • We doubt many Pro-M customers will make use of the advanced options for cooling.

KitGuru says: Good work Phanteks. We need more budget PC cases to show you don't have to spend a fortune to get quality hardware.

Phanteks are another company we bumped into during Computex and it was a good thing too, as it had a lot to talk about. It was showing off a lot of new cases at the show, as well as a table full of different heatsink/fan combinations, which no doubt will end up in some of your PCs before long.

phantecs02

The most noteworthy chassis it had on display, was the Enthoo Mini XL, with a new power splitter. When we reviewed this case earlier this year, we found it irritating that the second ITX system had to use a secondary power supply, but that has now been changed with the introduction of the PSU Power Splitter, which is a £40 extra.

Phanteks is still sticking with the contradictory name.

phantecs03 phantecs04

The Enthoo Evolv ITX is a more compact chassis, designed with ITX systems in-mind. It does come in some very nice colour variants however.

phantecs07 phantecs06

The Enthoo Pro is a little more traditional in its design, but should be more applicable with a wider range of hardware. It also features a new shelving system for adding hard drive mounts. While they will come as standard with the Evolv chassis, Pro users will need to buy them as extras.

Like these coolers. Which were kindly given detailed labeling by Phanteks so we didn't get confused about what was what.

The Phanteks 2015 product line looks promising from what we have seen so far at their CES 2015 suite. Here in Vegas, they are showing off two new builds in the Enthoo Mini XL chassis. Out of the box the Enthoo Mini XL is clearly ready for advanced custom watercooling.

As we can see in the image below, this case can support a dual loop system with a 360mm radiator set up in a push/pull configuration. There is also support for another 240mm radiator on the side, with plenty of room left for two large reservoir/pump combos.

Phanteks has also created a Mini ITX Upgrade kit for the Mini XL. This will allow users to install two complete independent systems, a good example of this would be combining a gaming rig and a server into one case to save on desktop space.

Phanteks added two new cases to the Enthoo Series under the Evolv family, just like the original Evolv, the ATX version comes with a 3mm aluminum exterior. One key feature of the aluminum ATX version is a unique bracket solution for quick installation of a radiator in the top. Other features includes a reservoir mounting location and SSD/HDD mounting locations. The Evolv ATX verison will be priced at $149.99 / £119.99 and will be available late April, 2015.

Phanteks also released their first Mini ITX, a budget oriented chassis that uses steel exterior. Coming in at $79.99 / £59.99, this case has many useful features, such as a unique bracket solution for a radiator on top and a multi-functional bracket for a reservoir, pump, and SSD/HDD. This particular case is set to launch in March.

Lastly, for those of you looking to grab the Evolv, you now have a new color option-Anthracite Grey, which will be priced at $129.99 / £199.99.

Today we are going to look at the first case from Phanteks – the Enthoo Primo, which is aimed at an audience who want a high-end full-tower case with plenty of room for water-cooling equipment.  Phanteks are adopting the same philosophy for the Enthoo Prime as they did with their first cooler, the PH-TC14PE … releasing a flagship product to compete with the very best models already out on the market.

We were very impressed with the Phanteks PH-TC14PE when we first looked at it last year. It dethroned the Noctua NH-D14 as the best performance air-cooler on the market.

The company have since down-filled their range of coolers, releasing a number of different models tailored to specific requirements and budgets.  We expect that this is their strategy in the chassis sector, starting with a flagship model – the Enthoo Primo.
