id Software recently released the much anticipated next-gen and ray tracing version of DOOM Eternal (an analysis of which we conducted HERE), making 2020’s much-loved shooter even better. With parts 1 and 2 of The Ancient Gods DLC now out, the team has announced their future plans for the game.

Taking to their blog, the Executive Producer of DOOM Eternal – Marty Stratton – said “As many are aware, we intended to release a free Invasion Mode update for the game; however, the unforeseen consequences of the pandemic and remote working impacted the progress of development for this addition. Over this time, we have also seen and heard how many of you enjoy the range of gameplay and combat available in the expansions and master levels. With these factors in mind, we have decided to redirect our focus from Invasion Mode to creating a totally new single-player horde mode.”

Offering greater detail, he said “We’re confident this horde mode will offer you more of the diversity and challenge you’re looking for in the game. In addition, the team continues to work on a refresh of BATTLEMODE that includes a more competitive, rank-based structure, a number of gameplay and balance updates and another new map,” and concluded by saying “We expect to share more information at QuakeCon in August.”

While some may be disappointed to hear that the promised Invasion Mode will longer be released, this Horde mode does seem to be focused on DOOM Eternal’s strong suit – that being shooting. Hopefully this new mode will satiate those who were looking forward to the Invasion mode.

If any of you are diving back into DOOM Eternal, then you may want to check out the latest update. The game’s second major patch has now dropped, making changes to Empowered Demons, introducing a new map for Battlemode and also adding quality of life improvements and fixes.

In a note from the dev team, we are told that “Update 2 delivers a number of important additions, fixes and improvements”. The star of the show though is the brand new Battlemode map, DOOM Eternal’s multiplayer PvP mode pitting the slayer against player-controlled demons.

The new Battlemode arena is called ‘Torment’ and is an old UAC outpost that has long been abandoned. Of course, there are also new seasonal rewards too, including Castle Grayscale skins and other retro-inspired skins for the slayer and various demons.

Other improvements include lower latency in multi-player, more frequent empowered demons in campaign mode, XP booster menu improvements, better lighting while in photo mode, more freedom when adjusting keybindings and a number of gameplay bug fixes. You can read the full patch notes, HERE.

KitGuru Says: I’ve been slowing getting back into the DOOM Eternal campaign recently in anticipation of the first big DLC. Are many of you still playing this one?

If you are still hopping into DOOM Eternal, then there is a big update to look forward to this month. The game's first major update promises to bring ‘a ton of features and enhancements', including quality of life improvements and new multiplayer updates.

Empowered Demons is a new addition to the campaign mode. If you choose to enable it, when a demon kills a slayer in their game, it can buff up the same demon in your own campaign run. You are rewarded with more health, ammo and XP for taking out these empowered demons.

The single-player campaign is also getting quality of life improvements, addressing balance issues, small bugs and acting on feedback players have given so far. You can also expect an expanded demon tutorial, the ability to dash vertically in water and an adjustment to toxic damage while swimming.

Finally, the PvP ‘Battlemode' is getting tighter anti-cheat protection, changes to the tutorial, poor network connection indicators, in-depth ‘death reports' and ‘Echelon' levelling, so those who have already hit maximum level can continue to grind.

There will be more to come soon, as id Software has also begun teasing the first campaign DLC for DOOM Eternal with screenshots.

KitGuru Says: Empowered Demons seems like it would have been more popular at launch, but it should be worth a try if you are still playing the campaign. Are many of you still playing Doom Eternal?

DOOM Eternal previews arrived this week, with press outlets already creating positive buzz for the game. Getting the shooter to this point was no easy task though, with id Software's Marty Stratton admitting that the studio had to go through plenty of crunch periods to get to this point.

Crunching has long been part of the video game development cycle, with different departments working extra long hours as the studio pushes to hit certain milestones. Initially, DOOM Eternal was due to release in November 2019 but in October, it was officially delayed to March 2020.

Speaking with VG247 about the game, DOOM Eternal executive producer, Marty Stratton, said: “We were crunching pretty hard most of last year. It goes in phases, we’ll have one group of people crunching so the next group of people are teed up properly. As they get done, they may need to crunch a little bit.”

Ultimately, DOOM Eternal was delayed, which Stratton says does “take a little bit of the steam and pressure out” but doesn't always result in less crunch. At this point, the game is in the best position to succeed, as extra polish and testing has been done, particularly on the different back-end systems at play as well as balance changes.

KitGuru Says: With Cyberpunk 2077 being delayed, DOOM Eternal is now my most anticipated game for the first half of the year. All the gameplay that has come out this week has looked incredible, so it seems like the developer's hard work has paid off.

Hearthstone has been a hugely successful game for Blizzard, because it took elements of Magic the Gathering, streamlined it and made it more accessible to everyone. Eternal is looking to take the next step on that developmental ladder, taking inspiration from MtG, Hex and Hearthstone, to create something that blends them all together in a competitive trading card game.

Showcased for the first time in a new video by developer, Dire Wolf Digital, Eternal looks to blend different parts of the various competitive card games that are out there, in order to make something that doesn't feel as imbalanced as the others can on occasion. To help avoid that, Dire Wolf Digital has some of the best Magic the Gathering players in the world helping it playtest.

Take for example Luis Scott-Vargas, considered by many as one of the all-time greats at MtG. He jumps in to commentate on the new video of Eternal, showing off some of the available strategy options. But more than that he shows how strong the AI is in the game, offering a real challenge because it's based on some of the playstyles of the best CCG players in the world.

[yframe url='http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XX0MdD_tt-o']

It's also quite a pretty game. The art isn't on the same level as Hearthstone, but it has a hand drawn charm to it that with a little bit more work could be very striking.

Although not much is known about Eternal right now, it clearly blends together several key elements of the various card games available at the moment. Dire Wolf Digital also has a lot of experience making these types of games, as it's currently working on the Elder Scrolls CCG and CardCraft.

Though with all of them set to debut this year, you have to wonder if it might be stretching itself a bit thin.

KitGuru Says: I'm down for another CCG. Especially when it's new and I can feel like a pro for the early wins until everyone gets better than me. It'll be like Rocket League all over again.
