With game install sizes increasing all the time, the current crop of games consoles are struggling to fit all this data on their internal hard drives, so external storage is almost a necessity if you want to keep your game library packed with new releases.

Silicon Power has a new solution to this problem with its A62 Game Drive external storage offering a high capacity and flexible plug and play interface. The A62 Game Drive from Silicon Power is available in capacities up to 2TB and is specifically designed to help gamers expand their gaming library with space for up to 50 games on average to be stored on the device.

Not only does it offer huge capacity, but the A62 game Drive also provides lightning-fast access to games and files via a USB 3.2 Gen 1 interface that is capable of data transfer speed of up to 5 Gbps. Plug and Play technology means gamers can connect the A62 Game Drive to a console and enjoy access to games in seconds with this simple setup process.

The A62 Game Drive is available in 1TB or 2TB capacities and is compatible with Windows 10/8.1/8/7/Vista/XP 64-Bit, Mac OS 10.5.x, Linux 2.6.x, PS4 Pro or PS4 (system software version 4.50 or higher) and Xbox One. The compact device measures 131.7 mm x 86.5 mm x 14.9 mm and is available in a black/blue colour scheme with a housing constructed from plastic and rubber.

A62 Game Drive is designed to be tough and meets the US military MIL-STD 810G 516.7 Procedure IV anti-collision standard. It can also resist liquid spillages with its IPX4 water-resistance providing protection against splashing water from any direction, while textured surfaces promote resistance to scratches and fingerprints. Power is provided by the USB connection so no external power supply is necessary and a Free SP Widget software is available for download, which provides 7 major back-up and security functions.

The Silicon Power A62 Game Drive is expected to be available from Amazon UK upon release, however, availability and price is still to be announced.

One key thing setting the PlayStation 4 apart from the Xbox One this generation is the fact that Sony allows users to replace the hard drive found inside of the console, either for a speedier SSD or just for extra space. Microsoft on the other hand is a little more restrictive, making it so that users looking for extra space need a compatible external hard drive.

It is clear that 500GB isn't enough for this new generation of consoles. I own an Xbox One myself and I'm pretty much always hovering around 90% full with around six games installed. Microsoft has since began selling a 1TB version of the Xbox One, but for those who still need extra space, the company has also partnered up with Seagate to launch an Xbox branded external HDD.

The image you see above shows off the  ‘Game Drive', a 2TB external storage solution specifically for the Xbox One and Xbox 360. Presently Microsoft refers to this as the “only external drive designed exclusively” for the Xbox One, though I imagine there would be some way to get it working with PCs.

It connects via USB 3.0 and the Xbox One will recognize it as a second drive for games, which will give you much more space on your console. Over in the US, the Game Drive will set you back by $99 directly through Seagate. Though price and availability information isn't yet available for other territories.

KitGuru Says: My Xbox One is constantly full so getting an external storage device for it would probably be a good idea. Though I do wish Microsoft would just allow console owners to replace the internal drive, I would much rather throw a speedy SSD in there.

Coming straight from the lips of Microsoft's director of programming for Xbox Live, Lawrence “Larry” Hryb, AKA, Major Nelson, we now know that the Xbox One will not support external storage, though it's been said that it will at some point in the future.
“The future plan is for definitely to support external storage much like we do on the Xbox 360,” said Major Nelson on the latest episode of his podcast.

“My understanding is that feature will not be there at launch because the team is working on some other things, but it definitely is on the list. I don’t know when it will come in though.”

While you won't be able to hook up an external drive – something that's basically a necessity on the Wii U – the Xbox One will come packing a 500GB internal drive. This is hardly huge by contemporary PC standards, but it's quite a step up over the Xbox 360's initial 20GB offering. The only downside there is that we know you can't replace it if you do want more.

Microsoft will also be offering cloud storage, though that's not much comfort to people with poor upload rates.

KitGuru Says: Considering the PS4 will let you swap out the HDD to whatever you want (potentially an SSD if you have the money) this could be quite a decent selling point for Sony and another bug bear for Microsoft's PR department. In the interest of fairness though, Sony isn't allowing installation of games to its external storage, even if it is offering it.

Today we are looking at an enclosure by ICY Dock, the Blizzard (MB080U3S-1SB), a creatively designed single 3.5″ bay featuring both USB 3.0 and eSATA connectivity.

ICY Dock have built this new enclosure from the ground-up to have an elegant appearance but yet incorporate a large 80mm cooling fan. The advantages of this design? With the fan positioned at the front and the vents at the rear it can create a tunnel of fast moving air … much like a turbine engine, allowing all sides of the hard drive to be cooled very efficiently.

ICY Dock have also managed to create an enclosure which can house a 3.5″ drive securely without the use of any tools – great if you want to switch drives at any point.
