The review embargo for Galaxy S22 phones hasn't lifted yet, but benchmark scores are beginning to make their way online. In the US, the S22 will come equipped with a Snapdragon 8 Gen1, while other countries will get a version with Samsung's own Exynos 2200 SoC under the hood. Unfortunately, it looks like there may be a substantial performance gap between these two versions.

Phone Enthusiast Erdi Özüağ (via VideoCardz) was lucky enough to obtain two samples of the S22 Ultra, one equipped with the latest Exynos chip and the other with Qualcomm's new Snapdragon mobile chip. With these two phones, the YouTuber was able to compare the two SoCs, the Exynos 2200 equipped with the AMD RDNA 2-based Xclipse 920 GPU and the Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen1 featuring the Adreno 730 GPU.

Analysing the scores, we see that the Exynos 2200 phone performs similar to the S21 Ultra featuring the Exynos 2100. However, the difference is evident compared to the Snapdragon Gen1-equipped phone, with the Exynos 2200 being much slower. To be more precise, when putting the 3DMark Wild Life scores of both S22 Ultra phones side-to-side, the Snapdragon is about 30% faster.

It's clear which SoC offers the best GPU peak performance, but most phones lack sustained performance, and that's where the Exynos 2200 may shine. According to PBK reviews (via Golden Retriever), the new Exynos flagship SoC is much more stable than the Snapdragon chip, meaning scores tend to reduce more on Snapdragon 8 Gen1-based phones.

It's worth noting that Samsung announced it would launch an update to improve performance on the S22 phones before release, which may increase peak and sustained performance.

KitGuru says: The Galaxy S22 isn't available yet and Samsung has promised more updates, so we may see improved peak performance in later benchmarks.

The Samsung Exynos 2200 is coming to smartphones soon, complete with AMD RDNA2 graphics. Unfortunately, preliminary tests show that the chip might not be as impressive as hoped, with just a 5% bump to CPU performance and a 17% bump to GPU performance compared to the Exynos 2100.

Samsung announced the S22 line-up during the Unpacked event a couple of days ago. As you may know, some S22 handsets will feature the Snapdragon 8 Gen1, but units sold outside of the US should feature Samsung's Exynos 2200 SoC. Samsung hasn't yet shared the official specifications of its latest Exynos chip, but ComputerBase has already shared the CPU clock speeds. In addition, TechAltar shared some comparative performance between the Exynos 2200 and its predecessor.

According to the German website, the Exynos 2200 CPU clock is 100 MHz lower than the Snapdragon 8 Gen1's Cortex-A510 (small) cores and 200Mhz lower than the big Cortex X2 core. Based on these specifications, the CPU performance of the Exynos chip may not be on par with Qualcomm's SoC, but the lower clock speeds may result in higher efficiency.

Moreover, preliminary tests show that the new Exynos chip's CPU is 5% faster than its predecessor, and graphics are 17% faster. We still don't know the GPU clock speeds of the Xclipse 920 GPU, but rumours have pointed to something between 1.3GHz and 1.4GHz. If proven to be accurate, it's worth mentioning that RDNA2 and the GPU architectures used on Mali and Adreno SKUs are entirely different, making a comparison between the clock speeds of these GPUs somewhat irrelevant.

Recently, Samsung unveiled its new Exynos 2200 chip with embedded RDNA 2 graphics thanks to a partnership with AMD. The company did not give us performance comparisons at the time, but the first benchmarks are now appearing, giving us a look at how it stands up to Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 8 SoC.

Following on from months of leaks and rumours, the first proper benchmark results for the Exynos 2200 are beginning to appear. The first was spotted by @TheGalox but Notebookcheck found many others.

The Xclipse 920 (Exynos 2200) was found on Samsung's SM-S908B platform, probably the Galaxy S22 Ultra, scoring 9,143 in the OpenCL test and 9,029 in the Vulkan test. As for the Adreno 730 (Snapdragon 8 Gen1), the entry was registered using a OnePlus NE2210, aka OnePlus 10 Pro, which scored 6,066 points and 7,502 in the OpenCL and Vulkan benchmarks, respectively. Considering the Snapdragon SoC as the baseline, these scores translate into a 51% difference in OpenCL performance and 20% in Vulkan workloads.

According to Geekbench, the RDNA 2 GPU will have 4GB of memory and operate at 555MHz, which seems slower than it should. We will have more on this once Samsung shares more about the Exynos 2200 SoC and its GPU.

KitGuru says: Do you think the difference in performance shown by the Geekbench results of these two mobile GPUs will be similar to what will see in real-world workloads?

After over half a year of rumours and even a last-minute announcement delay, Samsung has finally unveiled the Exynos 2200. As previously reported, Samsung's latest SoC is powered by AMD RDNA2 graphics, marking the red team's debut in the GPU phone market.

The RDNA2 GPU is named Xclipse, and as rumours have already claimed, it will support hardware-accelerated ray tracing and variable rate shading (VRS), making it the first smartphone GPU to support these features. In addition, the GPU will also feature an advanced multi-IP governor (AMIGO), which improves overall performance and efficiency.

Besides the AMD-based GPU, the SoC will come with 8x Armv9 CPU cores based on the 4nm process node, including a Cortex-X2 powerful core, 3x performance and efficiency balanced Cortex-A710 big cores and 4x efficient Cortex-A510 small cores. The NPU has also improved considerably, now offering two times the performance of its predecessor thanks to the improved 16bit floating point (FP16) precision and highly efficient INT8 (8-bit integer) and INT16 (16-bit integer) operations.

Moving on to the 3GPP Release 5G modem, it supports sub-6GHz and mmWave (millimetre Wave) spectrum bands, as well as E-UTRAN New Radio–Dual Connectivity (EN-DC), supporting maximum speeds of 10Gbps. Like most components, the ISP (image signal processor) has also been redesigned, and is now capable of taking photos of up to 200MP, with support for up to seven image sensors, but it can only connect simultaneously to four.

The Exynos 2200 SoC should debut with the Galaxy S22 phones, presumably coming out later this year.

KitGuru says: Would you consider getting the new Samsung Galaxy S22 solely based on the fact it has an AMD-based GPU?

On December 30th, Samsung teased that it would announce its new RDNA 2-powered Exynos chip on January 11th. The day came and went, but the Exynos 2200 remains unannounced, leading many to question what exactly happened. Samsung has now stated that it has rescheduled the announcement, but didn't specify the reason for the delay.

According to BusinessKorea (via VideoCardz), Samsung has rescheduled the SoC's announcement to coincide with the launch of the Galaxy S22, the first phone to feature the Exynos 2200 – which, in fairness, does make sense. In addition, the company stated there are no issues with the chip's performance or production, but rumours are suggesting otherwise.

A leaker at Weibo called “Ice Universe” claims that the chip's original target frequency was 1.9GHz. However, temperatures were higher than expected when setting the chip at that frequency, leading to Samsung reducing the clock frequency. That led to a new clock speed of 1.29GHz, but in an apparent effort “to restore some dignity”, Samsung plans to increase frequency to 1.49GHz.

Ice Universe was the same leaker that shared the alleged specifications of the RDNA2 GPU found on the upcoming Exynos chip. This GPU is expected to be based on Samsung's 4nm node, featuring 6 CUs (384x stream processors).

The Galaxy S22 series and Exynos 2200 SoC announcements will happen at the Galaxy Unpacked 2022 event, scheduled for February 8th. That's if Samsung doesn't decide to delay the event.

Earlier this year, we learned that Samsung and AMD were partnering up on a new Exynos SoC featuring RDNA 2 graphics cores. Now, the first benchmark result for the Samsung Exynos 2200 has appeared online, but while the results are decent, we're still months away from the planned Q1 2022 launch, so there may well be improvements or changes made before then.

The Geekbench 5 entry spotted by @Benchleaks shows both the single and multi-core scores of the Samsung SM-S906B. This SoC is believed to be the Exynos 2200 because the entry shows it's using an AMD GPU driver.

The 4nm-based Exynos 2200 will feature eight cores across three clusters. The first cluster has 4x cores clocked at 1.73GHz, the second has 3x cores at 2.5GHz, and the third cluster has one core clocked at 2.59GHz. AMD RDNA 2 GPU specifications were not detailed in the entry.

In the single-core test, the SM-S906B/Exynos 2200 scored 1073 points. As for the multi-core test, it scored 3389 points. Comparing these scores to those of the Galaxy S21 Ultra 5G equipped with an Exynos 2100, they're about 10-15% higher, but we should see the performance gap widen once Samsung gives those clock speeds a boost.

Since AMD announced it was working with Samsung to release a new SoC featuring RDNA 2 graphics, new leaks and rumours about this chip have started to ramp up. The latest is based on the structure diagram of the supposed Exynos 2200, which suggests the SoC will feature six Compute Units.

The diagram shared by Ice Universe (via Wccftech) shows the 6-core GPU located on the top right corner of the SoC. As for the 4nm-based CPU cores, the leaker claims they are spread over the left side of the chip.

Compared to the Mali GPU used in other Exynos 2100, the Exynos 2200 would feature fewer GPU cores (14 vs 6). However, early benchmarks point to a 50% performance uplift, so we can only assume that each RDNA 2 CU offers more than double the performance of those used on the Mali-G78.

Apple's M1 chip also features a low GPU core count, but that didn't stop it from being the highest performing chip in most mobile graphics benchmarks. Nonetheless, comparing the number of GPU cores of the Exynos 2200 with any other chip won't get us anywhere because this is the first time we see AMD using its RDNA 2 architecture in mobile SoCs.

KitGuru says: Based on what we know from RDNA 2 graphics, each Compute Unit may feature 64 Stream processors. If this is the case, this SoC will come with a total of 384 stream processors, which is still less than any RDNA 2 GPU currently on the market.
