Earlier this week, Garry Newman, the developer behind Garry's Mod and Rust, unveiled a new prototype being worked on at Facepunch Studios. It is called S&Box and the description sounds somewhat similar to what we saw with Garry's Mod. This led to plenty of fans asking if this was in fact going to be a successor to Garry's Mod and being the open chap he is, Newman was happy to explain the situation.

For those who missed the initial S&Box announcement, it is a project that aims to take a powerful game engine and build a “hot loading C# layer on top of it”. The system right now is running on Unreal Engine 4 but it can be lifted and applied to other engines, like the Source engine, where the project originated.

Speaking with PCGamer, Newman went into a bit more detail on the project and explained its connection to Garry's Mod: “So this might be a bit complicated. There's a lot of ‘is this Garry's Mod 2?', the honest answer is ‘maybe' but nowhere near that yet. We've basically built our own game engine on top of UE4. We're really using UE4 for its core features, rendering, networking, physics. It's all done in an engine agnostic way. We can lift our system off and put it on the source engine”.

As Newman explains it is “too early to say whether this will turn into a spiritual successor” to Garry's Mod, or even if S&Box will be released as a modable platform. Facepunch may decide to keep this as an internal tool to develop other games on.

KitGuru Says: I spent hundreds of hours in Garry's Mod over the years. It is a very different game now compared to what it was back then but it is still very fun. However, a lot of GMod is based on assets from Valve's Half-Life and Portal games and with no new Source 2-based games coming out of Valve, it might not make sense to release a second Garry's Mod now, unless new assets are used.

As much as game development engines have come on a lot over the past couple of decades, they are in some ways still rather clunky. Using a 2D interface and input peripheral to play with a 3D world isn't particularly intuitive, but what if you could step into that third dimension? That's what Garry's Mod and Rust developer, Facepunch, has made: a virtual reality level editor, compatible with the HTC Vive.

In the six minutes or so of silent video, a Facepunch representative can be seen creating a detailed and expansive indoor environment, with multiple levels, corridors, open areas and stairs. All of it is controlled using the two motion controllers, using intuitive and common place movements to generate the different aspects of the map being built, in a very drag and drop style.

Although the level editor seems mainly geared towards geometry mapping rather than creating or applying textures and more visual flair, the developer is shown playing around with directional light sources and shadows are rendered in real time relevant to the universal light source.

One caveat given in the video's description, is that there was some tracking issues at times with the controllers not being picked up by the Lighthouse system, but that was said to be caused by people moving around and blocking off the sensors at times.

This isn't the first time a developer has looked into virtual reality development though. Epic Games recently showed off a video of UE4 running perfectly well in VR, again using the HTC Vive and its dual motion controllers.

KitGuru Says: This looks pretty good fun just in itself. I can see a lot more people getting into the idea of modding games or building new levels, if it's as easy to understand as this is. Compared to traditional editors, this looks like a walk in the park.

Garry Newman, the man behind the popular sandbox game ‘Garry's Mod' has been working on something new this year. In a departure from his original game which now houses a series of fun game modes and modded mini games, Garry along with his company, ‘Facepunch Studios', is moving on to a new survival style game called Rust.

The game started off as a Zombie survival game but the Zombie's have since been removed in an effort to distance itself from the popular DayZ mod, instead it is now taking on an approach similar to Minecraft in that you are just thrown in to the world with other players and you must gather resources and survive:

“The aim of the game is to survive. To do this the player should gather resources. Hitting a tree with a rock will give you wood, hitting a rock with a rock will give you rock and ore. You can then craft a hatchet from the wood and rock, allowing you to gather faster. You can go out and hunt a variety of wildlife such as boars, chickens, rabbits, bears, wolves and deer. Once you have killed an animal you can butcher it to gather its meat and skin. You can craft a fire using wood and cook the meat inside the fire. Then you can eat.”

Don't get the wrong idea though, Rust's world will be harsh and unforgiving: bears and wolves will eat you alive but it's not just animals you need to worry about, you'll need to stay warm and eat plenty of food as starving or becoming too cold will also kill you. Radiation will also play a factor, sort of like the radiation in Fallout, it will poison you and eventually lead to your death.

Other than the environmental conditions of the game, you'll have another crucial enemy- other players. Not everyone will be friendly, there's always that one guy who just wants to kill and steal. That said, the developer does hope that people co-operate with each other to create towns and help each other out: “you can make friends and help each other survive. Rust’s world is harsh – so you might need to make friends to survive.”

Rust went in to Alpha earlier this year and is now coming to Steam as an early access title, the release date on the official website indicates that it will release today at some point. It'll cost $19.99 for early access so we'll be paying around £12.99 here in the UK.

KitGuru Says: This game has been through some changes but I'm pretty glad they chose to get rid of the Zombie's as they are really starting to get a over done, we don't need another Zombie game right now. With it's change towards focusing on survival and player interaction, I think this game could set itself apart from other offerings. I'm looking forward to trying this one out, what about you guys?
