Indie platforming puzzler, Fez, has received its first update in a long time. It brings the game to version 1.12 and has added an official speedrun mode, giving those who loved the game back when it was released three years ago, a chance to go back and relive that fun, but at a much greater pace.

Fez is a game that has a lot of extra stories attached to it. Whether you look at its inclusion in Indie Game: The Movie, the fall out with designer Phil Fish after it was released and the general uncertainty of the game's future. It turns out he never did sell the franchise though, as the developer behind it, Polytron, has now released this latest speedrun update.

This is however, said to be the last update of the game. Programmer Renaud Bédard said that it was planned as such and therefore has unified the code base for the game on all platforms, so that the experience is largely comparable wherever you go. Along with the speedrun addition, there are now also better frame rates and audio playback has been fixed in a few places, as per PCGN.

There are also more than 120 bug fixes which should improve the overall experience for veterans of Fez and those who grab a copy thanks to the publicity of the update. You can find the full list of changes on the official Steam page.

KitGuru Says: Fez is one of those indie games that just passed me by, but it had some interesting mechanics. Do you guys reckon it's worth taking a look at three years on?

Phil Fish has once again proven that he should probably stay away from social media as the developer went on another Twitter rant, which then led to him deleting his account … again. This time Phil was mad at the YouTube community and stated that everyone who has ever claimed ad revenue on a video featuring FEZ gameplay owes him money.

The FEZ developer started off his rant by saying “YouTubers should have to pay out a huge portion of their revenue to the developers from which they steal all their content. Ad revenue should be shared with developers. This should be built into YouTube. Anything else is basically piracy.”

So apparently, all let's player's and reviewers are pirates. However, if Phil really wanted to, he could have just used YouTube's content ID system to claim every video featuring his game, it wouldn't have been good for PR but then again, neither are his consistent Twitter rants.

The meltdown isn't quite over though, before deleting his Twitter account, the developer had a few more things to say: “If you generate money from putting my content on your channel, you owe me money. Simple as that. If you buy a movie, are you then allowed to stream the entirety of it publicly for people to watch for free? No, because that's illegal.”

“Systems are in place to prevent that. But buy Fez, put ALL of it on YouTube, turn on ads, make money from it and that's TOTALLY FINE. And the developer should in NO WAY be compensated for their work being freely distributed to the world. Right. Makes sense.”

After these tweets, Fish protected his Twitter account but then went on to delete it anyway. The last time this happened, Fish took all of the money left from FEZ and canceled FEZ II, which was in order to “get out of games”.

KitGuru Says: Not everyone has taken a positive stance on YouTube gameplay videos. Nintendo is the biggest company to go against the grain but most publishers and developers embrace the YouTube community as it actually does more to help sales. What do you guys think of Phil's Tweets?

The man behind the indie success story Fez and who featured in the popular (if somewhat depressing) Indie Game: The Movie documentary, Phil Fish, has announced that he is done with game development and that the title he was working on, Fez 2, has been cancelled.

This comes as somewhat of a surprise, as it was only at E3 this year that it was announced a sequel to the original Fez was in development. However, the statement by Fish is quite final: “Fez II is cancelled,” it reads. “I take the money and I run. This is as much as I can stomach. This isn't the result of one thing, but the end of a long bloody campaign. You win.”

Fish alluded to some of the “bloody campaign,” abuse he received, during the Indie Game documentary and how he struggled to deal with the negative feedback of his work. That abuse has continued to date, with some of it focused more on his personal opinions, which he's always been relatively vocal about.

Comments about the news from people seem to be quite varied, some suggesting that Fish leaving the industry is a tragedy and others that he's an unlikeable guy.

However, while most people seem to come down on one side of the other, it's hard to argue that Fish wasn't a bit of fresh air when it came to development opinions. He was quite brash and stated his thoughts unapologetically. In a social circle, that would make him kind of a dick, but in the public eye, that makes him a stand out.

Indie Game: The Movie, portrayed indie development as a sleep and nutrition deprived process

Would you rather a developer told you what it/they actually felt, or some pre-written, softly softly faux opinion, that was designed to pander to not only you, but as many people as possible, because they don't want you angry? While Fish obviously wasn't quite able to stand up to the feedback he got for his opinions, at least for a while he had the balls to state them.

The big tragedy here, isn't that Phil Fish is leaving the industry – hopefully he'll have a happier life now – or that Fez II is cancelled, but that once again we – the populace – have voted with our voices that we don't want people to be honest. We want the politician style lies, we want the faux apologies and the language that doesn't offend our sensibilities.

There's a reason people don't trust developers and call shenanigans when anyone in the public eye says anything, because we're breeding leaders and public figures to not push any buttons and it's boring. Sometimes, it's alright to disagree with someone and not call then a s*** head.

I haven't played Fez and I didn't interact with Mr Fish on any level, but I salute his stance as one of the renegades – as a developer and as a person. He was willing – for a time at least – to put his opinions out there and let them be heard. Perhaps he should have done a better job to ignore the reactions to what he says – especially when it wasn't related to his own game development – but we all want our heroes to listen to their fans.

I'm keeping my fingers crossed that Phil isn't the last of the developers to let us know he he really feels, even if we or I, disagree with them.
