Final Fantasy VII Remake had a fantastic debut earlier this year but now that it has been out for a little while, everyone is wondering when part 2 will be on the way. In a Japanese interview this week, it would seem that Square Enix has confirmed one major milestone, with the next instalment entering ‘full development'.

Final Fantasy fan and Japanese translator, @aitaikimochi, managed to get their hands on an early copy of this month's issue of Famitsu, containing an interview with several members of the Final Fantasy VII Remake team, including director, Tetsuya Nomura. During that interview, we learn that work on Final Fantasy VII Remake Part 2 is entering full production.

“We know that everyone wants the next instalment quickly. We would also like to deliver it as soon as possible. Since we were also able to see the line of quality from the first instalment, we hope to make the next instalment even better in quality and make for an even better experience.”

Final Fantasy VII Remake producer, Yoshinori Kitase, also teased that the “new story of Final Fantasy VII has only just begun”. If you want a rough idea as to how long development might take, we can look back on Kingdom Hearts 3, which entered ‘full development' in 2016 before being released in 2019. Of course, there may be a slow start with this project though, as the Final Fantasy VII Remake team has previously commended on the impact of COVID-19 on development.

KitGuru Says: This is encouraging news, but there is still going to be quite a wait ahead. For starters, Final Fantasy VII Remake needs to come to other platforms in 2021, then perhaps late next year, we'll see some good progress on Part 2. Have many of you played Final Fantasy VII Remake yet? Are you looking forward to the next chapter in the series?

Final Fantasy VII Remake has officially launched on PlayStation this week and to mark the occasion, Square Enix has released a ‘thank you' video for fans. While this video is uploaded to the official PlayStation YouTube account, it features gameplay captured on PC and not console.

The video is short, coming in at just over one minute long and the small amount of in-game footage shown comes with a ‘Gameplay captured on PC' disclaimer:

We already knew that Final Fantasy VII Remake was set to be a one-year timed exclusive for PS4, with the game able to come to other platforms in April 2021. However, exact platforms were not confirmed and since Kingdom Hearts 3 never made it off of consoles, there was some worry that we would see a similar situation here.

The video seems to confirm that there is a PC version though, so we should expect to hear more about that a bit later in the year.

KitGuru Says: Final Fantasy VII Remake looks awesome but I'll be waiting for a PC version. Hopefully we can get a more solid confirmation of a PC release soon.

A couple of weeks ago, Square Enix warned that physical copies of Final Fantasy VII Remake may be in short supply at release due to measures taken in various countries to combat the spread of COVID-19. Now, as retailers are beginning to break street date and sell the game early, Square Enix has given another update on the situation for physical copies.

First we'll start off with the fact that early copies of the game are already circulating. One redditor has already posted proof of them in possession of the game's Deluxe Edition, showing off its contents for all to see but promising not to post spoilers. However, if retailers are sending or handing over copies of the game two weeks early, then it is likely that leaks will take place.

Now onto Square Enix, which issued another update on the release and availability of physical copies for Final Fantasy VII Remake, confirming that it “cannot control the date the game may arrive” at this point due to import restrictions.

“As you will be aware, many countries are limiting entry or closing their national and state borders and restricting the distribution and delivery of non-essential items. Understandably these restrictions are being implemented so that essential items can reach their destination as fast as possible. This does not mean that box copies of FINAL FANTASY VII REMAKE will not be dispatched, it just means that we cannot control the date the game may arrive.”

Those who have already pre-ordered at retailers should “check their websites for the latest information”. Final Fantasy VII Remake is due to release on April 10th.

KitGuru Says: I no longer have a PS4, so I won't be trying this one out myself for some time. Are many of you planning on getting this next month? Are you worried about potential leaks due to early copies getting out?

At E3 last year, Square Enix finally showed off substantial amounts of footage for both Final Fantasy VII Remake and Crystal Dynamics' long-anticipated Avengers game. Originally, both games were due to launch in March and May respectively but both have since been delayed.

These delays were announced separately, so we will tackle them one at a time. First off, Final Fantasy VII Remake producer, Yoshinori Kitase, announced in a post that the game will be delayed from March 3rd to April 10th 2020 in an effort to “ensure we deliver a game that is in-line with our vision, and the quality that our fans deserve”.

Crystal Dynamics posted a similar message for Marvel's Avengers, pushing the game back from May until September 4th 2020. The studio's statement said: “At Crystal Dynamics our ambition has always been to deliver the ultimate Avengers gaming experience. In order to achieve that goal, we have made the difficult decision to move the release date of Marvel’s Avengers”.

The statement goes on to re-iterate that the game will feature an original, story-driven campaign, co-op and plenty of additional content for years to come. Some of that post-launch content has already been revealed, with plans to add new characters and missions to keep players coming back.

KitGuru Says: I had a feeling that Avengers might get pushed back but I didn't necessarily expect a delay for Final Fantasy VII Remake. Still, these delays aren't overly long, with Final Fantasy coming just over a month later than planned, while Avengers has been pushed from Q2 to Q3.

In the lead up to the release of Final Fantasy VII Remake, Square Enix sat down some of the team’s core developers to give their thoughts on the game. The game’s director, Tetsuya Nomura, provided new details regarding the remake, including the fact that new bosses will feature in the game, and that development on Final Fantasy VII Remake part 2 is already underway.

Final Fantasy VII Remake was officially announced at Sony’s 2015 E3 press conference. The game has been planned since much longer than that however. According to Nomura, “I started up the FINAL FANTASY VII REMAKE project around the time of Compilation of FINAL FANTASY VII. We’d gone through Advent Children, Before Crisis, Crisis Core, and Dirge of Cerberus, and I was planning this by myself for about a year as the fifth and final entry in the compilation”.

This game has been a long time coming, with Square Enix wanting to create a remake for seemingly just as long as fans have been asking for it. With the release of the remake on the 3rd of March 2020, some fans have been concerned that splitting the game into multiple parts will mean that each part will hold less content than the original game. On that, Nomura stated “with regard to the size of the game that many are asking about – there’s no reason at all to worry. Even in this Midgar portion alone, the density and volume are so great that I had to give directions to lighten them”.

The game will also feature added content, such as new characters. While Nomura previously stated “during past interviews that there would be ‘none’ – though they aren’t main characters, their numbers ended up growing considerably in the process of creating a rich depiction of Midgar. When you think of Midgar’s final boss, you probably think of the M.O.T.O.R., but in this game new bosses will appear and add to the excitement of the story even more”.

Lastly, Nomura confirmed that “[w]e’ve already begun working on the next one as well, but I’m confident that playing through this title will expand your expectations just like the world that extends beyond Midgar”. Hopefully this means that the wait for part 2 won’t be as long.

Square Enix finally began giving us real details on Final Fantasy VII Remake at E3 earlier this year. We have a release date, we know a lot more about the gameplay changes and we even know a little bit more about the ‘episodic' release. Now this week during the Tokyo Game Show, we've been treated to some full gameplay footage, showing off the game's first boss fight.

At TGS last night, Sony allowed 15 minutes of gameplay demo capture, which has been uploaded to YouTube for all of us to check out. PlayStation UK's PlayStation Access channel also offers some commentary, explaining the mechanics and how combat works in the remake:

Final Fantasy VII Remake is due to launch first on PS4 on the 3rd of March 2020. This will be an on-going series, with part one focusing on Midgar and greatly expanding the city, character backstories and other elements.

Unfortunately, we have no idea when part two might show up, or how much of the rest of the journey it will cover. With that said, we will hopefully start getting details on that later next year after part one launches.

KitGuru Says: Final Fantasy VII Remake is looking great to me, but I know there are a bunch of fans of the classic series who don't like the transition to an action combat system. What do you think of Final Fantasy VII Remake so far? Will you be picking it up next year?

Back when Final Fantasy VII Remake was first announced, we learned that Square Enix had some form of exclusivity deal in place with Sony for the PS4. There has been talk of a PC version coming later on but for the most part, Final Fantasy VII Remake is only being talked about as a PS4 game. That changed a little yesterday, when Xbox Germany mistakenly announced the game for Xbox One.

In a social media video promoting the game, the Xbox Germany Facebook page said that Final Fantasy VII Remake would be heading to Xbox One in March 2020 on the same day as PS4. Microsoft eventually deleted the video and said that the post went live due to an ‘internal mistake'. Still, this raised the question of the game's exclusivity and whether or not such a deal with Sony was still in place.

Square Enix has since chimed in on the error itself, stating that the company has “no plans for other platforms” while reiterating that Final Fantasy VII Remake will release on March 3rd 2020 for the PS4. When it comes to timed exclusivity deals, this type of response is not uncommon, we heard similar statements back when Rise of the Tomb Raider was announced as an Xbox console exclusive.

So Final Fantasy VII Remake may well come to other platforms eventually but for now, don't expect to hear about anything other than the PS4 release.

KitGuru Says: It is not often that we see an error like this from one of the big three console makers. Hopefully Final Fantasy VII Remake does spread beyond PS4 eventually though. Are any of you planning on getting Final Fantasy VII Remake when it comes out next year? Or will you be waiting and hoping for the game to come to other platforms first?

Way back in 2015, during one of Sony's best E3 presentations to date, Final Fantasy VII Remake was officially announced. This naturally drummed up a ton of excitement but immediately after, Square Enix went quiet on the project. That is changing this year, as during Sony's State of Play stream last night, we got a brand new teaser trailer, giving us new footage of Cloud, Aerith and Barret in both cutscenes and battle scenarios.

The teaser trailer is brief, coming in at just over one minute long. However, it does say that more information will be coming in June. Sony won't be holding its own E3 presentation this year, so perhaps Final Fantasy VII Remake will be headlining Square Enix's own presentation, or Sony could have another ‘State of Play' stream planned for next month.

Final Fantasy VII Remake has been once of the most exciting announcements this generation, taking the 1997 classic and revamping it for the modern era. Over time, the game has had its development troubles and has had to switch studios along the way.

At this point though, Tetsuya Nomura says that “most plans are already in place in the run up to launch”, so it sounds like we'll be getting more information on a release date next month.

KitGuru Says: Final Fantasy VII Remake is looking great so far. Hopefully next month's showing gives us a more in-depth look as there are still a few questions to be answered. Are many of you looking forward to Final Fantasy VII Remake? What do you think of the latest trailer?

Although the departure of director Hajime Tabata and the cancellation of future Final Fantasy XV DLC marked a glum turn of events, it seems all is going well on Square Enix’s next addition to the series. Dispelling rumours, Tetsuya Nomura has revealed that the Final Fantasy VII Remake is well under way, although it will be quite some time before it falls into the hands of players.

First announced way back in 2015, news surrounding the anticipated remake has been few and far between. Alongside enhanced graphics bringing the title into the modern era of video games, the Final Fantasy VII Remake has sparked some controversy as Nomura previously revealed that story and combat would also see an overhaul.

By 2017, development had shifted in-house at Square Enix, prompting rumours that production wouldn’t begin until Kingdom Hearts III was finalised. Nomura dispelled speculation in an interview with Famitsu by suggesting that the team is, in fact, split between the two games. While the next Kingdom Hearts remains the primary focus, development of the Final Fantasy VII Remake is currently “progressing favourably.”

Understandably, Nomura kept hush as to where development was currently at, or an expected time frame for the Remake to launch. The lengthy development of Kingdom Hearts III indicates that we could still have quite the wait on our hands before anything materialises.

KitGuru Says: Hopefully the pre-established content of Final Fantasy VII makes the Remake a little quicker to develop, even if Nomura has changes in the works. Are you excited for the Final Fantasy VII Remake? How do you feel about the announced changes so far?

It seems that progress on the Final Fantasy VII Remake has been going smoothly, as Square Enix plan to reveal more information on the title later this month at its very own retrospective exhibit. The event is aptly named “Final Fantasy 30th Anniversary Exhibition – Farewell Story Exhibition” and will run from January 22nd to February 28th.

The true 30th anniversary for Final Fantasy was December 18th last year, however the folks over at Square Enix feel like celebrating for one day given such a sizeable milestone just isn’t enough. The Anniversary Exhibition will be held at the Mori Art Centre Gallery, based in the Roppongi Hills complex in Tokyo.

A large portion of the showcase, as expected, will focus on the extensive history of the franchise from its very first title to its modern incarnations, including fifty songs from the series that sync to the exhibit as visitors progress.

The new information for the upcoming remake will be included in Final Fantasy VII’s original scenario which carries the moniker “Words Left Behind by Aerith,” written by original writer Kazushige Nojima himself. The renowned Church in Sector 5 will prominently feature while Aerith’s memories play via voice over, acted out by Maaya Sakamoto who previous voiced the character in Kingdom Hearts along with Lighting in Final Fantasy XIII. Image boards from the Remake will also be shown for the first time, giving more details surrounding the upcoming title.

Another original display is being created for the latest title, Final Fantasy XV under the title “Phantom Wedding.” Although details have been revealed, they contain various spoilers for the game making this portion of the exhibition strictly for those in the know or those that don’t mind narrative details.

KitGuru Says: Learning more about a title that was apparently so early in development last year is always exiting. Personally, I can’t wait to see just how far it’s come. What do you want to see out of the new details? Would you like to attend the exhibition?

Last week, we got our first update on the status of Final Fantasy VII Remake in quite some time. Square Enix has begun hiring new designers and planners to begin working on the project but this week, a bigger change occurred as the publisher brought all of the game's development entirely in-house and appointed a new lead programmer for the project.

According to a report from Gematsu, Square Enix will now be developing all of Final Fantasy VII Remake internally without the support of any external studios. On top of that, Final Fantasy XIII: Lightning Returns director, Haoki Hamguchi will be taking charge on the development side of the project.

Here is what Hamguchi said during a recent livestream for Mobius Final Fantasy: “I've taken charge on the development side for Final Fantasy VII Remake. As for the whole story, (it's a sensitive topic, but) until now, development was moving forward with external cooperation, but the company has decided to shift to an internal setup, including mass production and quality, because we want to control everything, including quality, on a stable schedule. (I won't be leaving Mobius Final Fantasy.)”

That is probably going to be the most significant update we get on the project for a while as Square Enix continues to round up its team and get straight into production. Right now, Final Fantasy VII Remake has no set release date but the game won't be coming before 2018.

KitGuru Says: I'm looking forward to Final Fantasy VII Remake, though it does seem that the project was announced incredibly early. It has already been two years and it sounds like development is only just beginning to really ramp up. Hopefully at some point in the next year we will finally see some gameplay, or get some more details.
