Ahead of the game's launch next week, Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth reviews officially gone live and by the looks of it, Square Enix has a hit on its hands. As of now, Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth is the second highest rated Final Fantasy game of all time.

If you were already finding the wait for this game painful, then it may get a little worse. As noted by Benji Sales, a Twitter account dedicated to games industry analytics, Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth now sits at a 93 overall on Metacritic, based on 119 critic reviews.

You could argue that it should be the highest rated Final Fantasy of all time, as Final Fantasy 9 currently sits at a 94 overall, but that is based on a much lower 22 critic reviews.

Many of the reviews point to more freedom of movement, open environments and twists on the classic story as strong points for the game. Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth will officially launch on the 29th of February, exclusively for PS5, but a free demo is already available to play. While the game is exclusive for now, it should come to PC eventually, just as Final Fantasy 7 Remake did.

KitGuru Says: I finished Final Fantasy 7 Remake last year in preparation for the sequel. With glowing reviews like this, I may just have to make it a day-one purchase. Are any of you planning on picking up Rebirth next week?

Much like Final Fantasy 7 Remake, the sequel, Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth, will be a timed exclusive for PlayStation consoles. Yesterday during Sony's latest State of Play stream, a ton of new details about the game dropped, including a February release date.

We're getting two major Final Fantasy titles in quick succession. Final Fantasy 16 launched in June this year and on February 29th 2024, we'll be returning to the world of Final Fantasy 7. Rebirth is Part Two of the Final Fantasy 7 remake, and will ship on two discs, indicating a much larger game compared to Part One.

In Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth, we'll get access to new fully playable characters, including Sephiroth. The game will be exclusive to PS5 for at least three months. However, it is worth noting that this does not mean that we can expect a PC release once that time runs out. In the case of Final Fantasy 7 Remake, the game launched with 12 months of PS4 exclusivity, and then that period was extended afterwards. The PC version didn't arrive until around 18 months after the game's initial release, albeit with expansion content included.

In the case of Final Fantasy 16, the game is exclusive to PS5 for six months, but Square Enix has warned that a PC version won't be ready in time. It is highly likely that even if the exclusivity period runs out, we'll still have to wait an extra few months before seeing Rebirth on additional platforms, if not longer.

KitGuru Says: Final Fantasy 16's sales were considered lacklustre, in part due to PS5 exclusivity. If Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth performs similarly, then I do wonder if Square Enix will start to seriously consider ending platform exclusivity deals in favour of more widely available multi-platform releases.

Back in 2021, Square Enix announced not one but two mobile Final Fantasy 7 spin-off games. The first was a Battle Royale game that swiftly shut down after about a year of service. The second, Final Fantasy VII: Ever Crisis, appears to have a bit more hype behind it, with over a million fans pre-registering for the game on Google Play and the iOS App Store.

With interest in this new spin-off growing, Square Enix has now announced a launch date. The game will be downloadable on iOS and Android devices starting on the 7th of September 2023.

Final Fantasy VII: Ever Crisis uses chibi-style characters from Final Fantasy VII. Developed by a third-party partner, Applibot, the game is essentially a retelling of the original Final Fantasy 7, putting players through key moments of the story in an episodic format, with episodes set to roll out on a monthly basis. The combat system has also been adjusted for better gameplay on mobile.

The game will be free to play, but will incorporate a Gacha system. While many core gamers dislike Gacha systems, they've become hugely popular in mobile games and they do indeed make tons of money, although typically, the most popular games that utilise this system sell different characters or variants of popular characters. In the case of Ever Crisis, the Gacha system will be used to sell rate items for the player to use in their journey.

KitGuru Says: Will any of you be giving this a download when it drops? While I think the idea of an episodic retelling of a classic JRPG could be a good one, I'm very sceptical of this gacha system being put in place.

The mainline Final Fantasy series has always had numbered releases, but there was never a requirement to play the older games, as each release had a brand new story. In the case of Final Fantasy 7 Remake, we are potentially getting a deeply connected trilogy of titles, which would suggest you'd need to play them all. However, Square Enix claims the upcoming sequel, Final Fantasy Rebirth, won't require fans to have played the first game.

In its most recent developer update, Square Enix says it has “made preparations so that players who did not get a chance to play the first game can fully enjoy Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth”.

What exactly these preparations are is unclear. However, it will likely come in the form of a recap video that you can watch before jumping into Rebirth, giving a quick rundown of the events of the first game and where our characters were left off.

Of course, with Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth being a direct sequel to Remake, we would encourage those interested in the game to also play Remake. The story is quite different to what we experienced in the original Final Fantasy 7 and it sets up the next phase of the story quite well. Clocking in at roughly 30 hours of main campaign playtime, it isn't a slog to get through either.

KitGuru Says: Chances are, a recap of the first game will suffice for many and if you weren't interested in revisiting Midgar, but would like to experience the next chapter of the game, then it would be a convenient and quicker option for getting up to speed.

Final Fantasy 16 is coming up in just a few weeks but many fans are eagerly awaiting the sequel to Final Fantasy VII Remake. Final Fantasy VII Rebirth was announced in 2022 with a short teaser trailer and it sounds like there may be release date news on the way.

With Final Fantasy 16 coming this year, with plans to release on PC in 2024, it is unlikely that Final Fantasy VII Rebirth arrives anytime in 2023. However, in the latest development update, the development team confirmed two things – large explorable areas in the world outside of Midgar and more importantly, that the team is currently ‘nailing down the release date'.

Final Fantasy VII Remake sets up the first portion of this story, taking place entirely in Midgar, ending right before Cloud and the party break out to explore the rest of the planet. This is a small chunk of the original game, as the remake isn't a 1:1 remake of Final Fantasy VII, but rather an alternate version of the story with plenty of changes. As the expected trilogy continues, we should expect some pretty big departures for certain events from the original game.

Final Fantasy VII Rebirth will be releasing as a PS5 exclusive initially. Much like Final Fantasy 15, VII Remake and Final Fantasy 16, it will likely release on PC a year to 18 months after the initial launch.

KitGuru Says: Square Enix might have back-to-back mainline Final Fantasy games over the next year, which would certainly be a feat.

Despite its recent focus on NFTs, Square Enix hasn't yet forgotten about traditional gaming. Take the Final Fantasy series, for example. In 2023, we'll get Final Fantasy XVI and hear more about the Final Fantasy VII Rebirth, but that's not all. According to Yoshinori Kitase, there's also a big announcement unrelated to Final Fantasy VII slated for 2023.

Square Enix's vice president and Final Fantasy producer Yoshinori Kitase has started Final Fantasy's New Year message by reminding us of how close we are to the launch of Final Fantasy XVI, asking readers to support Naoki Yoshida and his team in their last effort to complete the game's development. Moreover, he said that Final Fantasy VII Rebirth's development is going well, promising more details soon.

According to Square Enix's VP there will be “another big announcement unrelated to FFVII”. It's unclear which game this is, but if we consider the latest rumours and leaks linked to the Final Fantasy series, we might have a clue about this big announcement.

GeForce Now's massive leak was on point regarding a PC version of the Final Fantasy VII Remake and the Chrono Cross and Tactics Ogre Reborn remasters, so we wouldn't be surprised to see it happen again. In this same leak, there were other Square Enix titles that haven't been released yet, including Final Fantasy Tactics remaster and the remake of Final Fantasy 9. Either of these two would certainly cause quite a stir for series fans.

The 25th anniversary of Final Fantasy 7 is coming up and as previously promised, Square Enix will be celebrating. Today, the publisher announced that the Final Fantasy 7 anniversary stream will be taking place next week.

On the 16th of June at 11PM BST, the Final Fantasy 7 25th anniversary stream will go live. This stream will only be ten minutes long, but it promises a “first look” at what's coming down the pipeline.

Square Enix has spent the last few years working on Part II of Final Fantasy VII Remake, so we are hopeful that we'll get a development update of some sort. Other Final Fantasy 7 related games in the works include The First Soldier and Ever Crisis, both of which are heading to mobile devices in the future.

Final Fantasy 7 Remake finally came to life in 2020, but we've only seen part one of the story so far. Fans are eagerly awaiting the reveal of Final Fantasy 7 Remake Part Two, and it looks like we won't have to wait much longer.

This week during an event celebrating the 25th anniversary of Final Fantasy 7, the game's original director, Yoshinori Kitase, teased that we would get “more information this year” on what's next for the remake.

Here's the full quote, via VGC: “We are hard at work on Final Fantasy VII: Ever Crisis, so please look forward to that. In addition, with regards to the long awaited Final Fantasy VII Remake [Part 2]. There will be more information this year if we can”.

Square Enix is having a very busy year already, with Final Fantasy Origin, Final Fantasy 16, Final Fantasy 7: Ever Crisis and continued development on Final Fantasy 14: Endwalker. Over the summer during an event or possibly as part of a Sony State of Play, we should get our first look at Final Fantasy 7 Remake Part Two as well.

As of today, Final Fantasy 7 Remake is officially available on PC after over a year of PlayStation exclusivity. The only issue is that exclusivity deal has been followed up with another one, limiting the game to the Epic Games Store for the time being. There has been no confirmation that this game will come to Steam, but the game files do seem to confirm that a Steam version is in the works.

As reported by Ars Technica, the PC files for Final Fantasy 7 Remake do include references to Steamworks, indicating that a Steam version of the game does exist and that it is just a matter of time before the game pops up on Valve's store. More often than not, many PC gamers prefer to pick their games up on Steam, so if you are one of those people, we should see the game pop up on Steam some time next year.

Square Enix has had a few exclusivity deals with the Epic Games Store recently. Back in March, the entire Kingdom Hearts series finally came to PC, but only through the Epic Games Store. No Steam version has been announced, but if this is a timed exclusivity deal, those titles should also come to Steam at some point in 2022.

When the game does come to Steam, it is also more likely to be found on sale at a cheaper price. Currently, Final Fantasy 7 Remake Intergrade costs $69.99/£64.99 at launch, which is pretty steep for a game that initially launched in the first half of 2020, albeit without the new side-story DLC in place, which is included in the new PC version.

KitGuru Says: Will you be picking up Final Fantasy 7 Remake on PC straight away, or will you be waiting for the Steam version? Given the lengthy exclusivity period for other Epic Games Store exclusives, we would anticipate this game not coming to Steam for at least a year.

Chances are you've heard by now that Final Fantasy 7 Remake is coming to PC this week. The launch has faced some controversy due to an Epic Games Store exclusivity deal and high pricing. For those not deterred by those factors, the PC system requirements have now been revealed, with the minimum requirements targeting sub-1080p resolution, and the recommended requirements targeting 1440p.

The PC version of Final Fantasy 7 Remake is a port of the PS5 version, which includes the Intergrade DLC, a small standalone campaign featuring focused on the character Yuffie Kisaragi. The PC version will support up to 4K resolution, up to 120 frames per second gameplay, as well as support for Xbox and PlayStation controllers, as well as keyboard and mouse setups. Presumably, there will also be a suite of graphics options in the menu, but these have not been detailed yet.

In the gallery above, you can see the first PC screenshots, giving us an idea of what to expect in terms of graphics and visual fidelity. The game's minimum PC system requirements include:

  • OS: Windows 10 64-bit
  • CPU: Intel Core i5-3330 or AMD FX-8350
  • Memory: 8GB
  • GPU: Nvidia GeForce GTX 780 or AMD Radeon RX 480
  • Storage: 100GB

The recommended PC system requirements include:

  • OS: Windows 10 64-bit
  • CPU: Intel Core i7-3770 or AMD Ryzen 3 3100
  • Memory: 12GB
  • GPU: Nvidia GeForce GTX 1080 or AMD Radeon RX 5700
  • Storage: 100GB

Final Fantasy 7 Remake Intergrade will release on PC on the 16th of December via the Epic Games Store, priced at $69.99. There is no word on whether or not the game will eventually make its way over to Steam.

KitGuru Says: These system requirements are pretty tame. Now we'll just have to wait and see how well the PC version holds up in terms of optimisation and performance.

There was little doubt that Final Fantasy VII Remake was going to perform well. The remake of the 1997 venerable classic was released in April following years of anticipation. Despite only releasing for PlayStation 4, the JRPG has now officially shipped and sold over 5 million copies, in just under 4 months.

Taking to Twitter to make the announcement, the team thanked its fans, saying “we’d like to share a Midgar-sized THANK YOU to everyone who has supported #FinalFantasy VII Remake. We shipped and digitally sold over five million copies worldwide, which has made #FF7R the highest selling digital release on the PlayStation platform in #SquareEnix history!”

It is worth noting of course that shipped copies don’t necessarily translate to sales – though the relationship between the two is a positive one. Furthermore, PlayStation recently reported that almost three-quarters of all games sold within Q1 2020 were digital (with the impact of COVID-19 likely to have been a factor), meaning that this outcome wasn’t unfounded. Square Enix confirmed that Final Fantasy VII Remake sold over 2 million copies digitally – the first game from the publisher to achieve this figure.

The original Final Fantasy VII, following its release back in 1997, went on to sell over 18 million copies – though this did include re-releases as well as spin-off/add-on titles. Final Fantasy VII alone on the PlayStation 1 sold just over 10 million copies. The remake hitting half that figure in just 4 months means that the PS4 version may soon outsell the original – cementing itself as an undeniable success.

We've seen a few examples of game delays this year due to issues around COVID-19. Square Enix in particular had some complications with the physical release of Final Fantasy VII Remake as well as trouble remaining on track with Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn content patches. We aren't at the end of it though, as Final Fantasy VII Remake Part 2 is going to be slightly impacted.

Speaking with The Guardian recently, Final Fantasy VII Remake co-director, Naoki Hamaguchi and producer, Yoshinori Kitase, briefly touched on the subject of Final Fantasy VII Remake Part 2, explaining that much of the team are still working remotely in order coronavirus.

Due to working from home, the leadership duo sees development as dropping “below 100% efficiency” until it is safe to return to an office work environment. However, given that the game is still in its early days, the current pandemic shouldn't “be a big impact in the long term”.

Here is the full quote from the interview: “At this current time, the team are still making the next game via remote working. Our performance will temporarily drop below 100% efficiency because of this, but I do not think there should be a big impact in the long term.”

At this point, not much is known about the next chapter in Final Fantasy VII Remake, or how many parts to the series will be made. What we do know is that part 1 will be free to release on non-PlayStation platforms after April 2021.

We are nearly two months removed from Final Fantasy VII Remake's launch on PS4 and while we know that the game is only a timed exclusive, Square Enix is remaining tight-lipped on a possible release on other platforms for now.

Final Fantasy VII Remake sold over 3.5 million copies worldwide on its launch weekend. Naturally, Square Enix is “pleased” with sales of the game so far, but even while speaking with investors, higher-ups at the publisher can't confirm additional platforms “for now”.

At the moment, Final Fantasy VII Remake is exclusive to the PS4 until April 2021. However, dataminers have uncovered code that suggests a PC version of the game exists in some form. Presumably, the game will also be updated for the launch of the PlayStation 5.

This isn't uncommon for Square Enix, as the publisher couldn't confirm Rise of the Tomb Raider for PS4 until quite some time after its initial release on Xbox One. With that in mind, we could be waiting until early 2021 for ‘official' word on Final Fantasy VII Remake coming to PC, Xbox or other systems.

KitGuru Says: Final Fantasy VII Remake is too big to restrain to one platform, so an eventual PC and Xbox release feels inevitable. Unfortunately, it will also require quite a bit of patience, as Sony's exclusivity period is fairly lengthy.

There has been plenty of speculation over how Square Enix will handle its ‘episodic' approach to Final Fantasy VII Remake. At this point, the first part has been released and is a sizeable game, but future parts of the remake project could be broken up into smaller sections in order to speed up development.

Fans have begun translating ‘Final Fantasy VII Remake Ultimania', a book containing some interesting information about the game. In the book, Tetsuya Nomura, director on the remake, and producer Yoshinori Kitase,  talk a bit about the multi-part approach, indicating that no final decisions have been made on how the game is going to be divided up.

“We have a basic idea but no solid decisions so far. We currently can’t say. There’s a lot of speculation out there that say it’ll be three parts”, Kitase is quoted as saying. Nomura has his own answer, saying “If it is split into larger parts then it’ll take some time, but if it is split into smaller parts then it would be a shorter span. I personally want to release it sooner”.

So the team doesn't seem to have a number of releases set in stone yet. However, smaller chunks would enable swifter releases. The first part of Final Fantasy VII Remake took five years to create and has roughly 30 hours of main story content. Hopefully the next part won't take as long.

KitGuru Says: Final Fantasy VII Remake was positively received but fans are going to have to wait a while to hear about the next part, as it seems a roadmap has not been decided on, which is somewhat frustrating. Hopefully more details will come later in the year.

With gyms being closed and outdoor exercise being limited, many fitness-based games have found themselves being in high demand. The prime example of this is Nintendo’s Ring Fit Adventure, which has seen a huge surge in demand, leading to prices skyrocketing. It would seem as though the Japanese console manufacturer is slowly getting production under control, as the fitness game has once again entered the UK top 10 charts – although this week’s no.1 spot goes to FIFA 20.

The Association for UK Interactive Entertainment have recently published last week’s top 40 best selling games. Final Fantasy VII Remake which took the top spot the week prior has now fallen to 4th place, being replaced by Fifa 20.

Though FIFA has always been a consistently high seller, especially in the UK, the reason for its return to the top could be due in part to the fact that the UEFA Champions League has had to postpone, and perhaps even cancel all future matches due to COVID-19. This could have in-turn potentially led fans to purchase the football game as a replacement.

The remainder of the top ten have stayed relatively consistent in their placements. The only outlier is Nintendo’s Ring Fit Adventure, which has jumped all the way from 25th last week to 10th this week. This is likely due to the fact that the fitness game, which has been in high demand since the announcement of the global lockdown, saw stocks returning to online stores. Of course since then, the game has once again found itself in low supply, and in many stores, completely out of stock.

With the UKIE only recording the boxed sales of video games, it’ll be interesting to see how the charts fluctuate week-by-week, as physical stocks rise and fall during this tumultuous time. This week’s complete top 40 chart can be found HERE.

Final Fantasy VII Remake was already billed as one of the most highly anticipated games of the year and it looks like launch sales have backed that up. In the three days that followed the game's release, Square Enix sold 3.5 million copies.

Those are the sales numbers for between April 7th and April 10th, it also includes both physical and digital sales worldwide. It is a huge launch, although not quite as huge as Final Fantasy XV, which sold five million copies during its launch window.

At this point in time, Final Fantasy VII Remake is a PS4 exclusive and with 3.5 million sales at launch, it is now among the fastest selling PS4 exclusives so far. For comparison purposes, God of War sold around 3.1 million copies at launch and Spider-Man sold 3.3 million.

Final Fantasy VII Remake is expected to continue to sell well over the course of this year and will have another resurgence in 2021, when the game can officially release on other platforms.

As expected, Square Enix's Final Fantasy VII Remake is off to an excellent start sales-wise, swiftly rising to the top of UK charts. The game launched on Friday, swiftly bumping down other top sellers, including Animal Crossing: New Horizons, Resident Evil 3 and Call of Duty: Modern Warfare.

As reported by GI.biz, there has been growth in the boxed games market this year, with the recent COVID-19 lockdown seeing 1.5 million physical game sales despite shops being closed. The top ten video game sales this week track physical sales and not digital, so some games may be placed differently with both markets taken into account.

Here are the top 10 selling games in the UK for the week ending on April 12th:

  1. Final Fantasy VII Remake
  2. Call of Duty: Modern Warfare
  3. Animal Crossing: New Horizons
  4. FIFA 20
  5. Mario Kart 8: Deluxe
  6. Forza Horizon 4
  7. Resident Evil 3
  8. Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order
  9. Grand Theft Auto V
  10. The Last of Us Remastered

A lot of older titles are seeing a resurgence, indicating that a lot of people stuck at home are picking up games they missed out on last year now that there is some time to catch up.

KitGuru Says: People have been clamouring for a Final Fantasy VII Remake since the tech demo shown over a decade ago. With that in mind, I wouldn't be surprised if the game remains in the top ten for more weeks to come, although being a PS4 exclusive does limit the customer base a bit. Final Fantasy VII Remake is officially coming out next week, which means it is time for one final trailer. Square Enix has packed together four minutes of new footage, showing off brand new parts of the game and even a few potential spoilers for new plot points.

Of course, if you are sensitive to spoilers, both 23-year old spoilers and spoilers for newer surprises, then you shouldn't watch the new trailer. However, if you aren't bothered by that sort of thing, you can find the full trailer below:

Final Fantasy VII remake is coming on April 10th for PS4 and will then land on other platforms in 2021. The story of this first, standalone game in the FINAL FANTASY VII REMAKE project covers up to the party’s escape from Midgar, and goes deeper into the events occurring in Midgar than the original FINAL FANTASY VII.

According to Square Enix, Part 1 is essentially as long as a standard Final Fantasy game. There will be more parts to follow, so we could be potentially looking at a lengthier Final Fantasy VII trilogy.

KitGuru Says: Final Fantasy VII Remake does look awesome, although I'll have to wait for other platforms to get support. Are any of you planning on playing this? Or perhaps even one of the lucky few to get an early physical copy of the game?

Due to the effects of COVID-19, ISPs’ bandwidths have been stretched thin. In response, PlayStation has opted to slow down its services in order to reduce this strain. This move led fans to wonder whether the preload of Final Fantasy VII, which was set to go live on the 7th of April, would offer enough time for fans to download the game prior to its release. Luckily, Square Enix has now moved up the date, giving digital buyers much more time to preload the JRPG.

With many countries operating under self-isolation and quarantining, citizens are spending a greater amount of time indoors, and are subsequently using more internet bandwidth simultaneously. This has led to a strain on internet service providers. PlayStation is but one of many companies which have chosen to reduce data speeds in order to try to limit the strain placed upon ISPs.

While good in theory, this move would have had a knock-on effect for those who opted to purchase the upcoming Final Fantasy VII Remake digitally. The game, which comes in at over 100GB, was originally set to have its digital preload go live on the 7th of April. While normally this would offer enough time for fans to download the game (prior to its 10th of April release date), the new speed caps put in place would have meant that users might not have been able to play the much anticipated title on its launch day.

Luckily, Square Enix has responded to these concerns by moving up the date at which fans can preload the game. Digital preloads will now become available from the 2nd of April, offering fans five more days in which they can download the title, prior to its launch on the 10th of April. Though speed limits vary from household to household, hopefully this offers more than enough time for most people to download the game, so that they can all enjoy returning to Midgar after so many years of waiting.

Over the weekend, we learned that some pre-order customers were getting their physical copies of Final Fantasy VII Remake very early. This morning, Square Enix has clarified the situation, saying that in order to ensure as many people get their copy in time for launch, it began shipping disc copies far earlier than usual.

“We had some hard decisions to make during the final weeks before launch due to disruption channels caused by the spread of the COVID-19 virus”, the statement reads. “These unique circumstances have made it very difficult to align timing of our global shipping. Our highest priority is that all of you, including those who live in countries currently facing the biggest disruption, can play the game at launch”.

Due to this, Square Enix “made the decision to ship the game far earlier than usual to Europe and Australia”. Folks in the Americas may also begin receiving early copies as soon as this week, as more shipments are being sent out to Western regions.

Due to the situation, the Final Fantasy VII Remake team is asking fans “one big favour”. Those who get the game early are asked to “please think of others and don't spoil it for them”. Of course, Final Fantasy VII is a 20 year old game, but the remake is “a new game that still has many surprises for everyone”.

With the COVID-19 outbreak shaking up daily lives and business operations across the world, there is an increased possibility that games may be delayed. In the case of Final Fantasy VII Remake, Square Enix says the game is still on track for April, but those looking to get hold of a physical copy may have a difficult time doing so.

In an update on the release of the game, today Square Enix said that “due to the extraordinary circumstances the world is facing with the COVID-19 pandemic, we want to update you on how this will impact the forthcoming release of Final Fantasy VII Remake”. The statement goes on to say that “the worldwide release on April 10 will go ahead”, but due to “unforeseeable changes in the distribution and retail landscape which varies across countries, it is increasingly likely that some of you will not get hold of your copy of the game on the release date”.

Those who pre-ordered or plan on buying the game digitally won't be affected, but those who pre-ordered a physical copy at retail or straight through Square Enix may end up being impacted. We don't know the full extent of the physical copy shortage at this stage but Square Enix is “monitoring the situation on a daily basis”.

Another update is due to be released on Friday March 20th, which will hopefully contain more details on how the physical launch will be impacted.

The Final Fantasy VII Remake has had a long and arduous journey. The remake had been in talks ever since the PlayStation 2 days, and kept either getting cancelled or delayed. Finally in 2015 the game was officially announced to be in development. The game would then see its fair share of trials and tribulations, including a delay as recently as January 2020. It has now been confirmed however that the game has ‘Gone Gold’ meaning that Final Fantasy VII Remake is finally almost here.

During an interview with Tetsuya Nomura, the Director of Final Fantasy VII Remake, 4Gamer asked (and translated by Siliconera) “Thank you for today. There’s been a delay of a month, but is development looking favorable heading into its April 10th release date?” to which Nomura confirmed that “Yes, it’s all right now. We needed a little more time for some of the last quality improvements, but it has already gone gold and there won’t be any further delays.”

This will undoubtedly be cause for relief from fans who have been waiting for the better part of half a decade for the game to be released. As mentioned, talks of a remake of Final Fantasy VII first began back during the PlayStation 2 era. This ultimately never came to be. Demand for a remake began to increase once again during the PS3 era due to a tech demo released by Square Enix in 2005, showcasing the opening of Final Fantasy VII running on a new engine. This too, never came to be.

Finally, in 2014, rumours of a remake began to swirl up again, and in 2015 Square Enix finally announced an official remake was in the works for the PlayStation 4 during Sony’s E3 press conference. It would take another 5 years and a delay, but Final Fantasy VII Remake will finally be playable on the 10th of April 2020 on the PlayStation 4.

Of course, it is worth noting that this is only the first part of the remake, though part 2’s internal release date is said to have been unaffected by the most recent delay to part 1. The demo for Final Fantasy VII can be found HERE.

While evidence of the Final Fantasy VII Remake demo showed up all the way back in early January, the playable teaser had not been officially announced or released by Square Enix. The game's eventual delay seemed to push those demo release plans back too, although that comes to an end today, with the demo now live on PSN.

When leaked gameplay footage of the demo popped up online, we figured that this small slice would be about an hour long. Now we have some more precise details, with this demo featuring the Mako Reactor 1 bombing mission. However, Square Enix notes that progress made in the demo won't carry over to the final game and content may differ from the retail version.

Speaking of the retail version, Final Fantasy VII Remake is going to be a big game, shipping on two Blu-Ray discs and eating up around 100GB of storage space. The game is going to be a timed-exclusive for the PS4 until April 2021, after then, the game could show up on other platforms like PC or Xbox.

Final Fantasy VII Remake is split into parts with this initial release featuring an expanded version of the Midgar section. The game releases on the 10th of April 2020 for PS4.

During the briefing’s Q&A session, Matsuda was asked “Could you share your thinking on the development of new titles for current- and next-generation game consoles going forward?” to which he responded “The next-generation consoles will have backward compatibility, so we plan for the time being to make our new titles available for both current and next-generation consoles. It will therefore be somewhat farther down the road that we release titles exclusively for the next-generation consoles.”

This can be seen in both a positive and negative light. It means that for the foreseeable future at least, all Square Enix titles will be able to be played by as many people as possible, meaning for example that you won’t have to purchase a PlayStation 5 in order to play the second part of the Final Fantasy VII Remake. On the flip side however, it also means that Square Enix titles won’t be taking advantage of the new hardware, and though resolution and frame rates might be better on PS5 or Xbox Series X titles, the games will fundamentally play like a previous-gen title.

Speaking on future Final Fantasy VII Remake titles, one attendee asked whether “the change in you (sic) release date for ‘FINAL FANTASY VII REMAKE’ [will] impact your development or launch timelines for the next installment?” as it was announced back in January that the game was to be delayed by a month. According to Matsuda, this will have no impact on the release dates of future titles, fortunately.

KitGuru says: What do you think of Square Enix’s decision to not develop next-gen exclusive titles for a while? Is it a more consumer-friendly move, or do you think they are stifling their own creativity and potential? Will you be picking up a next-gen console on launch day? Let us know down below.

We were all astonished when Titanfall released with a 50GB+ file size back in 2014 but since then, game sizes have been growing even more, with console releases for Gears 4, Halo 5, Middle-Earth: Shadow of War, Assassin's Creed Odyssey and more creeping up over the 100GB mark. Later this year, Final Fantasy VII Remake will join that growing list, with physical boxed copies confirming a 100GB HDD space requirement.

We don't know why Final Fantasy VII Remake is so huge on PS4, particularly since this is just part one of a multi-part release. There are a few ideas that come to mind though, from 4K pre-rendered cutscenes to the game simply being even bigger than anticipated, despite being limited to the Midgar region.

Pixelbuster over on Twitter confirmed the news by posting an image of the back of a Korean version of the physical game box. Needless to say, Final Fantasy VII Remake will be shipping on two Blu-Ray discs to accommodate the massive file size and remove the need for a huge digital download.

With Part 1 of the remake coming in at 100GB, one has to wonder how big the full series will end up being later down the line. If this trend continues, you may need a dedicated HDD just to play all of the Final Fantasy VII Remake parts from start to finish.

KitGuru Says: I imagine cutscenes will have a lot to do with this, as Square Enix will be looking to make this its most graphically impressive game of the generation. Are any of you planning on picking this one up? Will you be needing to clear some HDD space in order to install it?

While the recent Final Fantasy VII Remake delay was a bit of a downer, Square Enix is swiftly lifting our spirits with a brand new trailer for the game. Better yet, the trailer acts as the debut for the remake's theme song, composed by Nobuo Uematsu.

The trailer mostly features cinematic cutscenes but there are some short bits of gameplay mixed in too.

There are plenty of big story moments teased too, which long-time Final Fantasy VII fans will appreciate, as will newcomers to the game.

Originally, Final Fantasy VII Remake was due to release on the 3rd of March 2020 but it has since been pushed back to the 10th of April. The game will remain a PS4 exclusive until next year, at which point, it could come to other platforms.

KitGuru Says: This is a pretty solid trailer, although I'm still a little confused about the ‘episodic' approach Square Enix is taking with this remake. The first game will take place in Midgar but I'd want to know more about the sequel before getting invested. Are any of you looking forward to Final Fantasy VII Remake?

Just one week ago, the first signs of a Final Fantasy VII Remake demo popped up on the back-end of the PlayStation Network store. Now, it seems that the demo isn't too far away from releasing, as leaked gameplay footage has appeared online.

The demo footage was posted to YouTube over the last few days, showing off some of the game's opening cinematics and gameplay as Avalanche begins its mission to blow up the Mako reactor.

Part 1 and Part 3 videos of the demo are still live at the moment, although Part 2 seems to have disappeared for now. Each part is around 15 minutes long, so the full demo should end up being between 45 minutes and an hour in length.

Story-wise, players of the original Final Fantasy VII won't find many spoilers here as the demo seems to faithfully follow the original first-mission. What this demo will do is give players a taste of the new combat system.

Currently, Final Fantasy VII Remake is due to release on the 3rd of March and will remain exclusive to PS4 until March 2021. We don't know when the demo is due to go live but given the recent leaks, it may show up later this month.

KitGuru Says: Final Fantasy VII Remake is shaping up nicely. A lot of press got to try the game out at E3, so it will be nice to finally get some hands-on impressions from a wider player-base. Are any of you planning on picking this up? Will you be trying the demo when it lands?

Since the original announcement of Final Fantasy VII Remake, there has been talk of the game being a timed exclusive for the PS4, with other platforms set to get the game later on. Square Enix has kept its messaging vague, claiming that there are ‘no plans' to bring the games to other consoles or PC. However, a new box art update for the game has since confirmed the PS4 timed-exclusivity period.

In new box art shared by Wario64 on Twitter, Final Fantasy VII Remake is listed as being a ‘Play first on PS4' title, with timed exclusivity until the 3rd of March 2021, one year after the game releases.

Other platforms haven't been confirmed yet and likely won't be announced until much closer to the end of the exclusivity period. However, this does open the door for the game to appear on Xbox, PC and other platforms, like Google Stadia, which Square Enix has been supporting so far.

Of course, Final Fantasy VII Remake is just part one of the game's grand re-imagining. It is a full length game but only covers a portion of the original Final Fantasy VII story, so there will be more to come later down the line.

KitGuru Says: I'm still hoping that Final Fantasy VII Remake ends up on PC eventually, although first I think Square Enix needs some kind of roadmap for the remaining parts of the story and when roughly to expect them. Are many of you looking forward to Final Fantasy VII Remake? Will you be picking it up on PS4, or waiting until 2021 for the timed exclusivity period to end?

As this generation of consoles start to wind down, we’re beginning to see developers transition towards working on games for the next generation of consoles. It appears that Square Enix’s First Development Division, whom are responsible for the Final Fantasy VII Remake, as well as Kingdom Hearts III, are looking to shift to development on the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Scarlett generation of systems.

Posting a job listing to their website, and translated by Gematsu, Square Enix claim to be “aiming to realize a ‘next-generation action game experience’ that goes beyond the framework of existing action games, with an international team of creators from all over the world”.

This unannounced new IP for ‘high-definition consoles' seems to have lofty goals. What Square Enix means by “goes beyond the framework of existing action games” is unknown. Perhaps First Development Division is aiming to extend the combat system introduced within Final Fantasy VII Remake, where the player is able to transition between real-time, and turn-based combat at will.

Regardless of what the game turns out to be, it is exciting to see that one of Square Enix’s biggest development teams will be working on a new IP in the action genre. This does bring into question what this means for Final Fantasy VII Remake episode 2, and whether First Development Division’s focus will be scattered too far. With Square Enix planning to consolidate its 11 separate divisions into 4 however, perhaps that worry will be alleviated.

As exciting as the 2015 announcement of Final Fantasy VII Remake was, some concerns have popped up over the years. We know that Square Enix is looking to drastically shake things up from the original game, leading to a new multi-part release plan and some gameplay changes. Some fans of classic Final Fantasy weren’t too pleased about the switch to an action combat system but fortunately, a turn-based mode is also being included.

Speaking at the Tokyo Game Show last week, Final Fantasy VII producer, Yoshinori Kitase, said that a ‘Classic Mode’ will be in the game at launch, giving players the option to choose between the new combat system, or classic turn-based gameplay.

Classic mode will work as you would expect, with an ATB gauge charging up and ultimately allowing you to unleash different moves against the enemy. It will all be menu-based in the same style as a traditional RPG, which should keep fans on both sides happy.

Final Fantasy VII Remake (Part One) will focus on an expanded version of Midgar. While this is just part one of a new Final Fantasy VII series of games, it should be as long as any traditional Final Fantasy game with plenty of content. For now, the game is set to be a PS4 exclusive with a release date set for the 3rd of March 2020. Other platforms, like PC, might get the game later.

KitGuru Says: Not everyone is on board with action combat in Final Fantasy, so giving players the option to choose between action or turn-based seems like the right move- particularly for a remake of such a beloved game. Are many of you planning on playing Final Fantasy VII Remake next year?
