Tracking our hands in virtual reality has been something all of the big VR makers have been working on for the past year or so. Oculus has its Touch controllers which will release soon after the Rift CV1 and Valve/HTC have their motion tracking controllers, which will come with the headset at launch. At a live-show earlier today, tracking technology firm Noitom showed off finger tracking in VR using a set of gloves and the motion tracking stick.

In a demo, that was supposedly put together in just three weeks, the man on stage uses the glove/tracker segment to show opening and closing of the hand, motion of individual fingers and some quite complicated locomotion. There is some twitchyness and it's not the smoothest motion ever, but it's pretty good and certainly there are more motions that can be tracked in this manner versus the lighthouse tracked controllers it's shown off before.

In a much more polished look at VR tracking technology, a new gun controller was also shown at the same event, whereby a user was able to operate a real world version of a digital gun, complete with triggers, accurate in-game tracking and various switches. All it required was to be attached to the Vive's hand tracking controller.

The only downside is that Noitom did clarify that it hadn't begun production on any of these products, or the other peripherals it briefly showed in conceptual form. However it has reached out to HTC/Valve and hopes to look into making some of them a reality in the future.

KitGuru Says: That finger tracking is rather exciting, but I have a feeling the VR gun will be a more requested peripheral.
