As part of a multi-media franchise revival, Sony had been pushing to see the return of the classic PlayStation destruction derby series Twisted Metal. Last year’s Peacock-distributed live-action adaptation was well-received, with a 2nd season confirmed to be on its way. Unfortunately, it seems as though the long-in-development Twisted Metal video game has now been cancelled.

As reported by Jason Schreier via Bloomberg, as part of the recently-announced Sony lay-offs, the long-rumoured Twisted Metal video game has been cancelled; claiming that “Despite some recent scuttlebutt suggesting that Twisted Metal was close to release, the game was in early development and wasn't yet greenlit.”

For the uninitiated, back in September 2021 it was reported that the Liverpool-based Lucid Studio was working on a revival of the Twisted Metal franchise – having previously released the similarly-styled Destruction All-stars.

Cut to January 2022 and Lucid Games were said to have been taken off the project, with Firesprite now being tasked with its creation. Unfortunately, it would appear as though they too are no longer working on Twisted Metal.

What this means for the future of the franchise is unknown. As mentioned, the live-action adaptation was surprisingly well received, with a 2nd season announced late last year. We speculated at the time that the premiere of the second season could line up with the release of this Twisted Metal title. Evidently this is no longer the case – begging the question as to whether Twisted Metal will ever return in game form.

Though not officially confirmed, it has long been rumoured that a Twisted Metal game is currently in development at Firesprite. With the PlayStation VR2 roughly one week away from launch, it is encouraging to hear that the destruction derby title might be compatible with PSVR2 – as is the case with Gran Turismo 7.

As discovered by ResetEra user ‘Smitch’ the Liverpool-based Firesprite is a first-party PlayStation developer currently working on an unannounced ‘multiplayer action game’ – though leaks and rumours claim it to be part of the Twisted Metal franchise.

Regardless of what exactly the game is, it seems as though the title will offer some form of VR support, with the studio stating (as part of a new job listing) that “Experience developing gameplay for VR would be useful.”

How deep the VR integration will go is currently unknown, but one can hope that it is comparable to Gran Turismo 7’s upcoming VR update – which looks to be rather comprehensive.

Though offering no names on the IP in development, Firesprite did provide some additional information on what the game will be, saying “This bold project aims to break new ground, blending genre transcending gameplay mechanics around vehicular and on foot combat and deeply embedding them into a unique gameplay environment as part of a unique and vibrant universe.”

Early reviews for the PlayStation VR2 have been coming out, and everyone seems quite impressed with the hardware. Hopefully the headset has the software to match it – though it looks like Sony is certainly trying in this regard.

Firesprite Games is one of the most recent studios to be acquired by Sony. Formed of ex-Studio Liverpool talent, the team have worked primarily on VR titles. That being said, the team’s next project is said to be a AAA horror title built on Unreal Engine 5.

Firesprite recently published a job application for a Narrative Director revealing that the team is currently working on “a AAA narrative driven horror-adventure game in Unreal 5.”

Though no additional details were provided, the announcement that the team is not only working on a horror title, but one built using Unreal Engine 5 is certainly interesting.

As a first-party publisher, PlayStation has mostly shied away from horror experiences, with the main titles of note in recent years being Until Dawn (and Rush of blood) and The Last of Us – though none of these games are pure horror experiences.

As mentioned, Firespite has primarily worked on VR titles since its founding in 2012 (including The Persistence VR, Astro's Playroom and more). While this does not guarantee that their upcoming AAA horror game will be in VR, it certainly gives credence to the idea. Furthermore, the VR platform lends itself well to horror, and with Sony working on a PSVR 2 right now, the stars seem to be aligning. It will be interesting to see what exactly the game is.

Recently we reported that Lucid Games, the studio behind 2021s neutrally-received Destruction All-Stars, would no longer be working on the upcoming Twisted Metal reboot game. Previously, all we knew of the new studio was that it was a first-party dev team. However, we now know exactly who.

In a report by VGC, Sony's recently created Firesprite studio is said to have taken over development of the upcoming Twisted Metal reboot. What is perhaps the most curious thing, however, is the fact that Lucid Games’ own studio director ‘Matt Southern’ has now moved over to Firesprite in the same role.

Even more interesting perhaps is the fact that both Firesprite Studios and Lucid Games are located a mere 15 minutes from one another In the city of Liverpool. What this means for both Twisted Metal and Lucid Games is unknown. It was originally believed that the project was moved due in part to the lukewarm reception towards Lucid Games's Destruction All-Stars –  which itself was a destruction derby game.

With team members moving from one studio to the other, however, perhaps something bigger is at play here. Though this is but mere speculation, it is entirely possible that Sony is gearing up for an acquisition of Lucid Games. While Destruction All-Stars was in no way a masterpiece, its gameplay loop; controller feel; and use of PS5-exclusive features were well implemented and so it would not be out of character for Sony to be gearing up towards acquiring the talent at Lucid Games.

Again, nothing is confirmed until announced by Sony themselves, and so the console manufacturer's short-term and long-term plans for Twisted Metal will be revealed if and when Sony wants to.

2021 has seen Sony acquire multiple studios, adding them to the now increasing list of first-party PlayStation studios. Following the acquisition of Housemarque and Nixxes Software, many were expecting Demon’s Souls creator Bluepoint Games to be next. This isn’t the case however, as the console manufacturer has announced its latest acquisition.

Making the announcement on the PlayStation Blog, Hermen Hulst, the Head of PlayStation Studios said “After a number of years closely collaborating on several games together, including The Playroom (PS4) and The Playroom VR (PS VR), I couldn’t be more delighted to welcome Firesprite to the PlayStation Studios family as our 14th studio! Quite a few members of Firesprite come from SIE’s Studio Liverpool and we’re thrilled to welcome them back.”

Hulst explained their new role as part of PlayStation, saying “The team’s technical and creative capabilities will be paramount to growing our stellar catalogue of exclusive games, and I think you’ll be excited for what’s to come.”

While the studio itself has so far created a modest list of video games, the original team was formed from ex-SCE Studio Liverpool members who left to create their own studio. SCE Studio Liverpool is known best perhaps for the creation of the futuristic racing franchise Wipeout.

Firesprite meanwhile has worked on a number of PSVR titles, including The Playroom VR and The Persistence VR – suggesting perhaps that their acquisition is in service of the upcoming PSVR2.

While Firesprite may not be the studio that some fans expected to be acquired, this marks the 3rd studio acquisition by Sony in 2021, suggesting that the console manufacturer is going all in with regards to building a library of high quality first party games. With Microsoft acquiring massive companies such as Bethesda, Machine Games, id Software and more, PlayStation certainly needed to up their studio count if they wanted to compete on quantity. It looks like they are doing just that.

KitGuru says: What do you think of the acquisition? Are you surprised that Bluepoint hasn’t been acquired yet? What studio do you think is next? Let us know down below.
