It looks like bendable smartphone displays might be the future as not only is Samsung working on the technology, but LG has also stepped into the ring, with a massive £1.3 billion investment, hinting that we may see a big push for bendable smartphone displays over the next few years.

LG’s display division has just set up a new production line in South Korea dedicated to producing flexible OLED displays, with LG saying it wants to “lead the approaching era” of bendable smartphone displays. However, mass production isn’t set to begin until the second half of 2018, so it will be a few years before LG’s big smartphone shakeup hits consumer hands.

As TrustedReviews points out, right now, LG hopes that its flexible displays will be used to create brand new display form factors, with rollable or foldable displays. This also marks more investment in OLED, which LG has been pushing since 2013 with its TV line-up.

We have seen flexible display technology demoed at trade shows like CES over the last couple of years. However, it is going to take a while before a company like Samsung or LG makes use of these in smartphones. From the sounds of it though, we may start seeing more flexible displays pop up after 2018, when mass production gets underway.

KitGuru Says: Flexible displays like these have the potential to really shake up the smartphone market with brand new designs. Which is great news as smartphones have become very predictable over the last few years, making annual releases less exciting to follow.

Samsung has been showing off its foldable display technology for the last couple of years at trade shows like CES but we may finally see it hit the consumer market next year as reports this week suggest that Samsung's first foldable display smartphone could arrive in 2017.

Samsung's foldable smartphone is apparently known as ‘Project Valley' internally and according to a leak, it will launch under the name ‘Galaxy X' next year. This information comes from a post on the Chinese site, Weibo, which also suggests that Samsung's super flexible display will rock an Ultra-HD resolution too.

SamMobile were the first to break the story but unfortunately, the source did not have much more information about Samsung's 2017 plans, aside from the fact that there will be another flagship, which is a fairly obvious claim to make given that Samsung launches two flagship devices each year at the moment.

This is technology that Samsung has been demoing for some time so who knows, perhaps it is ready to test out in the consumer market. Samsung has been making efforts recently to innovate in the smartphone space in order to put an end to declining Galaxy sales.

KitGuru Says: If Samsung were to release a flexible smartphone, would you consider buying one? I would be interested in seeing it myself but I'm not sure how well something so drastically different would catch on.

Back in 2014, there was quite a bit of talk surrounding flexible displays, in fact at the time LG had announced that it had created an 18-inch OLED panel that could roll up like a newspaper. Now, this technology is ready to be shown off to the public as LG will be bringing its rollable OLED panel along to the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) this week.

Back at the time of the announcement, LG said that its flexible OLED screen featured a 1200×810 resolution but it also hinted at making much larger 60-inch rollable displays. We don't know yet if that has changed, or if LG has managed to achieve larger, higher resolution rollable displays but it will be interesting to see nonetheless.

While we do have curved screens today in plenty of sizes for TVs, monitors and smartphones, screens as flexible as this could make for some very interesting device concepts and take the next step to futuristic looking displays.

Aside from that, LG will be showing off plenty more at CES, including a 98-inch 8K TV, a slew of new UHD TVs and more smart home devices.

KitGuru Says: CES kicks off this week so we can expect plenty of interesting announcements and concept ideas like this one. What do you guys think of LG's flexible display?

Apple might be planning a new smartphone with a flexible display following the launch of the Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge, according to a recent patent filing, which was revealed earlier this week.

Patently Apple was the first to discover the recent patent, which describes a ‘mini flexible edge display’, which would sit on the side of the device and could be used for shortcuts or camera controls.

The iPhone’s physical buttons, like the volume and mute buttons, would be replaced by the second mini display. Users would be able to configure this from within the settings application.

If this is Apple’s plan then it will be taking a different approach to Samsung, which uses one display curved at the edges. Instead Apple will have a separate display entirely attached to the side of the device.

Take all of this with a grain of salt though; Apple has a tendency to focus on design and making its devices as thin as possible. The iPhone 6 for example does not have enough room along the edge for a secondary display. The iPads are also too thin for such a feature.

KitGuru Says: I doubt Apple will want to make a device thick enough for a display running along the edge. However, it is interesting to see the company experimenting.

While flexible OLED displays are most attributed to Samsung, fellow Korean company LG are also planning to bring flexible OLED displays to mobile devices with their new display production line. While it may seem LG is stealing Samsung's idea, LG is apparently using a different production process.

Even the average watch will become smarter with flexible OLED displays

Aside, the above flexible prototype is not one straight from LG's factory, instead it is a device developed by Universal Display Corporation. A company that appears to be have the same goal as LG and Samsung in mind.

In order to achieve this LG is preparing a 3.5-Gen OLED plant that will be able to pump out displays with plastic substrates, which puts the flexible in front of flexible OLED. Saying this, we may not see fully flexible phones and other devices for some time. Instead the flexible displays will be will be thinner, more durable and less prone to impact than current glass based displays. The flexible OLED display could also end the need for Corning's Gorilla Glass on phones.

The $176 million production line will be able to produce displays that are “unbreakable” once the line gets the green light for operation towards the end of the year.

KitGuru says: While it doesn't seem like we'll get to see ultra-flexible devices anytime soon, we can't wait to see LG's flexbile OLED displays in action.

Samsung's upcoming “thinner, flexible and unbreakable” AMOLED displays will from now on be known as ‘Youm'. The quietly named display technology hopefully means an imminent launch from the Korean company. Estimates from Samsung in the recent past indicate a launch sometime in 2012.

Samsung's Youm has some obvious advantages over current LCD and OLED display technology

Samsung has passed an application over to the US Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) which includes the new name and the above image showing the differences between Youm and other current technologies. The displays become flexible as Samsung makes the thin film transistor (TFT) and encapsulation out of film, rather than glass.

Reportedly, Samsung will enter mass production of Youm displays during spring and should hopefully be in a shipping product before the end of the year.

Youm will likely end up being used in watches, e-readers, tablets and smartphones such as the somewhat confirmed Samsung Skin.

Kitguru says: We can't wait to see folding laptops and other interesting concepts come out of this particular display technology.
