Koei Tecmo, the publisher behind series like Dead or Alive, Dynasty Warriors and a number of popular licensed anime games, has suffered a security breach this month. The publisher suffered a cyberattack that forced it to take down both its US and European websites.

As reported by PCGamer, over 65,000 registered accounts for Koei Tecmo's Europe-based forums have been compromised. This includes account names, encrypted passwords and email addresses. However, critical information like user payment details were not obtained in the breach.

Apparently the hack took place over Christmas and due to the data obtained, those with accounts on the European Koei Tecmo forums should change their login details.

This follows a string of recent attacks on publishers. In the later months of 2020, Ubisoft, Crytek and Capcom were also affected by security breaches.

KitGuru Says: Given that personal information has leaked here, Koei Tecmo forum users will want to keep an eye out for potential phishing scams in their email inboxes. Outside of that though, it doesn't sound like anything else is going to come out of this particular breach.

In mid-July last year the Epic Games forum had been hacked, leaving thousands of users compromised. Now, just over a year later, history has repeated itself, this time though, over 800,000 logins have been stolen. Records of private messages, email addresses and more were also taken in the attack according to reports.

In an official statement, Epic Games explained that the Unreal Engine and Unreal Tournament forums were specifically targeted this time around and while no passwords were taken, other bits of info were affected.

The hackers managed to break in by exploiting an SQL injection vulnerability in the vBulletin CMS. This problem is fixed in newer versions of vBulletin but the Epic forums were running on an outdated version. The attack itself took place on the 11th of August and for the time being, the affected forums have been put into maintenance mode.

KitGuru Says: This is the second time the Epic Games forum has been compromised in recent memory, which isn't great news for users of the site. Hopefully something can be done to boost security after this.

It seems that Epic Games is the latest company to have its servers compromised. It seems that a hacker managed to get access to the Epic games forum servers and accessed username, email address, password and date of birth information that users registered with.

Not every forum was affected, the main ones affected appear to be Gears of War, Infinity Blade, UDK, Bulletstorm and older Unreal Tournament games. Newer Unreal Engine 4 games like Fortnite and the new Unreal Tournament were not affected.

In an email sent to those registered on the Epic Games forums, the studio said: “We have just discovered that the Epic Games forums located at https://forums.epicgames.com were compromised by a hacker. We are sorry to report that the incident may have resulted in unauthorized access to your username, email address, password, and the date of birth you provided at registration.”

“While the investigation into the security compromise is ongoing, we are reaching out to you directly to let you know of the potential unauthorized access to information you provided at registration. It is possible that any information stored or sent by you using the forums may have been accessed. Since this is a public forum, we do not collect or maintain financial information, but we advise you to be alert for suspicious email such as phishing attempts.”

As always with these things, when the Epic Games forum comes back online, if you used any of the affected forums regularly then a password change is recommended. You should also be on the lookout for any phishing scams in your email inbox.

KitGuru Says: I do wonder what incentive there was to hack the Epic Games forum of all things.

Following on from its announcement of a successful $50 million round of funding and a pledge that 10 per cent of that money would go to rewarding the site's community for making it what it is, the “front page of the internet,” Reddit, has told all remote workers that if they don't relocate to San Francisco, they could be fired.

Reported initially by David Heinemeier Hansson, CTO of project management firm BaseCamp, the news has now spread enough that a front page Reddit post on the matter has appeared, and Reddit's current head of operations, Yishan Wong has commented:

“Intention is to get whole team under one roof for optimal teamwork. Our goal is to retain 100 percent of the team,” he said. He also explained that those who did make the move would be given a “generous relo[cation] package,” and that those that couldn't do it, would be given three or more months severance pay. Workers were initially given a week to make a decision, but Wong apparently changed his mind and has now given them until the end of the year.

Who'd have guessed?

It's not clear how many employees will be affected by this news, though it's unlikely to be too many, since the company only employees a total of 60 individuals at this time. However for those that are faced with this ultimatum, it's a horrible position to be in. For those that move, rent and other expenses are likely to sky rocket if they haven't been living in a large city. It's not clear if they can expect pay rises to compensate.

For those that don't want to make the move though, they're faced with having to leave a company that seems to be just getting started, especially since it just received so much extra funding, which it is expected to use to expand massively over the next year.

KitGuru Says: Do you guys think this is fair for a company like Reddit to do, after just receiving so much extra developmental funds?

To celebrate the launch of the new official Cooler Master support forum, nestled in the warm confines of our own, we're teaming up with the long time case manufacturer to off you a brand new HAF Stacker 935 and Stacker 915.

haf

All you have to do to be in with a chance of winning the cases, is do the following:

That might seem like a fairly long list of chores, but considering it'll take you less than two minutes and you could win cases worth collectively over £200, it's not too much to ask is it?

KitGuru Says: Of course you can also post any support queries you have for Cooler Master right there in the forum. Even if you don't care about entering, go say hi, be friendly.

On 28th September, KitGuru kicked off one of the strangest competitions we're ever done. Forget the 'email this address and we'll pull your name out of a hat' scenarios of old – be quiet's Marketing Gurus wanted our readers to pick up pen, paper and Photoshop, in order to position the ‘be quiet!' logo in a variety of strange and unusual places. It's drawn to a conclusion – but what was drawn, by which drawers and which winners have been drawn from the pool of entrants?

Armed only with a pair of PNGs (one for dark and one for light backgrounds) and a simple set of rules, you folks came up with some amazingly funny options.

If you have a coffee in your hand and 10 minutes spare, we REALLY recommend you check out the uploaded entries on the KitGuru forum.

But now entry time is over and it's time to applaud the winners!
