In an interesting twist to the Battle Royale genre, Forza Horizon 4, an open-world racing game, will be adding a Battle Royale mode. The mode will see 72 cars battle it out to become the sole victor. Unlike many of the other Battle Royale titles however, you eliminate your opponents through racing. The Battle Royale mode, titled ‘The Eliminator’ will be available from today, via a free update to the game.

The Eliminator will pit up to 72 players against each other in a Battle Royale, not so dissimilar to other games in the genre. The entire map of Forza Horizon 4 will be playable (surrounded by a ring), with the ring shrinking as time progresses. Players who spend too long outside of the ring will be eliminated.

The main way to eliminate other players is by racing them. When in the vicinity of another car, either you or your opponent can trigger an impromptu race, where the two vehicles will have to drive to a procedurally generated finish line, equidistant from both players. By winning the race, the loser is eliminated, and you get the option to either level up your vehicle, offering faster speeds and better control, or to swap cars with your defeated opponent.

All players will start with the same vehicle (a Mini Cooper), but upgrades are scattered across the map. When the player count has been reduced to 10 players, a final race is triggered, where all 10 vehicles must compete to become the victor.

The Eliminator will be available in a free update to the Microsoft-published racing title, later today. While many shooters have been adding Battle Royale modes in the last few years, Forza’s spin on the genre is helping keep the genre interesting, adding twists that were perhaps previously unconsidered.

At the end of last year, Epic Games was bombarded with legal action surrounding its use of iconic dance moves in Fortnite. In an attempt to avoid getting caught up in the whirlwind of litigation, Microsoft and Playground Games have decided to remove its “Carlton” and “Floss” emotes from Forza Horizon 4.

Although the lawsuit against Fortnite is proceeding on shaky ground given that dance moves cannot be copyrighted, the main criticism comes from its lack of credit to the creators and/or the likeness that they’re associated with. This differed slightly in Forza Horizon 4, as Alfonso Ribeiro’s iconic dance from The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air was named after his character in the show, Carlton.

Image: PC Gamer

Publisher Microsoft doesn’t seem to be willing to take that chance after Ribeiro has already targeted Epic Games, removing the dance along with Floss as a part of the Series 5 update. On a more positive note, additions include numerous cars, seasonal events and a Mitsubishi Motors car pack, alongside free-for-all Adventure and Horizon Story missions.

Microsoft hasn’t commented on the reasons why it decided to remove the dances from Forza Horizon 4, whether it’s simply precaution or a requirement in an out-of-court settlement with the creators.

KitGuru Says: I’m still torn on my feelings towards profiting from emotes modelled off the work and likeness of other people, but surely naming the emote Carlton draws enough attention to its original creator? Still, it really isn’t worth the headache for companies to go to court over. How do you feel about Microsoft removing the emotes?

Forza Horizon 4 was released for the XBOX one and Microsoft Windows at the beginning of October. It is set in the UK and after seeing beautiful screenshots all over social media I had to give it a go. Since the release it has been my go to game so if you have a few hours to spare over the christmas holidays come hang out with me while I play the game. See if it is a game you would want to buy too.

Forza Horizon 4 takes full advantage of the rather diverse UK weather with dynamic seasons that really mix up the gameplay. There is the option to team up with other players to complete challenges or you can ride solo and explore the beautiful landscape.

With over 450 cars to choose from and plenty of options to tune, modify and create there seems to be endless possibilities for a garage I doubt I will ever get bored of. My personal favourite is the McLaren 720S but you'll also find plenty from big names like Aston Martin, Jaguar, Lamborghini and Ferrari.

With 6 different racing scenes there seems to be no shortage of things to do either:

  • Street scene
  • Road racing series
  • Cross country series
  • Dirt racing series
  • Drag strip
  • Showcase

The game’s minimum requirements are:

  • OS: Windows 10
  • RAM: 8GB
  • CPU: Intel Core i3-4170 or higher.
  • GPU: Nvidia GTX 650Ti or AMD R7 250X.

The recommended system requirements are:

  • OS: Windows 10
  • RAM: 12GB
  • CPU: Intel Core i7-3820 or higher.
  • GPU: Nvidia GTX 970 or AMD R9 290X.

I've been playing on a PC with the following specifications and get a smooth 4K at 60fps with the settings set to a mix of high/Ultra.

BRIONY PC SYSTEM SPECIFICATIONS:

Corsair 570X White case
ASUS PRIME Z270-A ATX motherboard
Intel i7 7700K Processor
Corsair RGB H150i Pro 360mm
Cablemod AIO cooler sleeving kit in white
4 x 8GB Corsair white RGB vengeance Ram
NVIDIA GTX 1070ti
Corsair M.2 SSD
1TB Seagate Barracuda Hard drive
Corsair RM750x White Power supply
6 x Corsair LL120 fans
Corsair command centre PRO RGB fan controller
Corsair RGB Lighting PRO Expansion Kit
Philips BDM4037UW 40 inch 3840×2160 4k Monitor

Kitguru says: Forza Horizon 4 gets my game of the year 2018 due to the beautiful graphics and amount of content available. It's also perfect for laying back and playing with a controller for a properly chilled gaming session.

Connection issues have been plaguing Forza Horizon 4 since it launched last week, as players claim they are being kicked from Ranked Team Adventures and unfairly banned as a result. Fortunately, this hasn’t slowed down sales as Microsoft’s latest racing game has become the series’ fastest-selling title in the UK.

Due to the competitive nature of Ranked, Forza Horizon 4 carries its ban hammer proudly to penalise quitters and trolls that directly affect the scores of others, be it for better or for worse. Unfortunately, many have seen this backfire thanks to connectivity issues preventing people from connecting to a Ranked Team Adventure, and booting those that manage to. Naturally, the game sees these players as quitters, unfairly punishing them with a ban.

Microsoft’s official Forza Support Twitter page reassured fans that it recognised the issue almost immediately after launch, however the problem still persists to this day. This doesn’t seem to have affected the game’s sales, however as Microsoft tells GamesIndustry.biz that Forza Horizon 4 has become the fastest-selling game in the Forza series to date.

“We're thrilled that Forza Horizon 4 has been so well received by gamers across the UK,” explains Xbox UK director Harvey Eagle. “Set in beautiful, historic Britain and made by British studio Playground Games, Forza Horizon 4 is the fastest-ever selling game of the Forza Horizon series in the UK according to the latest GfK data.”

This has helped sell more Xbox Game Pass subscriptions, granting access to a large library of titles within Microsoft’s cloud gaming service. Unfortunately, a further problem affects those playing Forza Horizon 4 through the Game Pass, preventing players from adding Formula Drift Car Pack cars to their garage without spending in-game credits. This is something that Playground Games is working to correct in a future update.

Despite the few problems the game does have, Forza Horizon 4 has achieved universal acclaim across critics and users alike. It debuted at number 3 on the UK charts, just behind fellow new entry Assassin’s Creed Odyssey and returning champ, FIFA 19.

KitGuru Says: While so many streamers have fallen in love with the game, most have fled to other titles until the problem is solved. Have you experienced any issues with Forza Horizon 4 since it launched?

It's a big month for PC gaming, not only do we have the launch of the new Nvidia RTX series on our hands but there are a few big games also on the way, including Assassin's Creed Odyssey, Forza Horizon 4 and FIFA 19. With that in mind, it should come as no surprise that there is a big new GPU driver update today.

The latest GeForce driver from Nvidia brings us up to version 411.63. This is the launch driver for the RTX 2080 and RTX 2080Ti but it also doubles as a Game Ready driver for the big game launches coming over the next few weeks. You'll need this driver version to take advantage of Nvidia's new RTX features, including DLSS and ray-tracing, although no games support either of them just yet.

On the games optimisation front, this driver will prep you for Assassin's Creed Odyssey, which launches on the 5th of October. It will also optimise for Forza Horizon 4, which brings an all new dynamic seasons system in to play as you race across the streets of the UK on the 1st of October.

Finally, if you happen to purely game on PC and need your football fix, then this driver also optimises for FIFA 19, which launches on the 28th of September.

KitGuru Says: Are any of you planning on picking up one of the big games coming out over the next couple of weeks? Or better yet, are any of you upgrading to Nvidia RTX?

Forza Horizon 4 will be out in just a few weeks time. We've already got the PC system requirements, we know that the game will take a step back from microtransactions and later today, we'll be able to get our hands on it for the first time thanks to a rather large demo.

The Forza Horizon 4 demo will be available today on Xbox and PC. It'll take some time to download though as the demo will be 27.83GB. There's no word on exactly what the demo will contain but if Forza Horizon 3 is anything to go by, you'll get to try out the first few races and explore some of the open world areas.

Playground Games had a successful showing of Forza Horizon 4 at E3 earlier this year. The big feature this time around is the addition of ‘seasons', with a dynamic system in place to change the weather, which will have a knock on effect on specific cars in certain conditions. There will also be timed events to take part in, one of which will be Halo themed.

Forza Horizon 4 will properly launch on the 2nd of October for Xbox One and PC. If you happen to have a Game Pass subscription, then you'll be able to jump in straight away without buying the game outright.

KitGuru Says: I really enjoyed Forza Horizon 3 so I'm looking forward to this one. The emphasis on ensuring 60 frames per second is also a nice bonus this time around. Are any of you planning on picking up Forza Horizon 4? Will you be trying out the demo later today?

Forza Horizon 4 will be with us in just over a month, giving racing fans a chance to cruise across the streets of the UK. The game had an impressive showing at E3 this year, with several graphical upgrades in place. Today, the game's system requirements for announced for PC players, with the minimum and recommended specs targeting 60 frames per second.

Forza Horizon 4 launches on the 2nd of October for PC and Xbox One. This time around, a dedicated ‘seasons' system has been put in place for the shared game world. This means terrain and weather will adjust over time based on the season. In Autumn, you'll see some rain and leaves scattered around, while in Winter, everything will freeze over and snow will be present.

The game's minimum requirements are:

  • OS: Windows 10
  • RAM: 8GB
  • CPU: Intel Core i3-4170 or higher.
  • GPU: Nvidia GTX 650Ti or AMD R7 250X.

The recommended system requirements are:

  • CPU: Intel Core i7-3820 or higher.
  • GPU: Nvidia GTX 970 or AMD R9 290X.

KitGuru Says: We don't know the exact resolution or graphics preset that these specs target but my guess would be 720p/low for the minimum and 1080p/high for the recommended. Are any of you planning to jump into Forza Horizon 4?

Last year, we saw a huge rise in the number of Triple A games utilising loot boxes to make extra money. Two of the biggest examples were Battlefront 2 and Middle Earth: Shadow of War, both of which ended up removing those microtransactions. Now, Microsoft's Turn 10 Studio will be going down a similar path, with loot boxes set to disappear from Forza 7.

In a post today on the official Turn 10 website, Studio head, Alan Hartman, confirmed that the studio will be taking a step back from microtransactions as “players' expectations of games and their experiences have changed”. This will start with the removal of loot boxes from Forza 7 later this year.

In another player-friendly move, paid ‘Forza tokens' will not become a part of Forza 7 and will be avoided in Forza Horizon 4, which comes out in October.

It will take some time for loot boxes to be removed from Forza 7 as so many in-game items were attached to them. However, by the end of the year, they should be gone and we likely won't be seeing them at all in Forza Horizon 4.

KitGuru Says: While I don't really play the mainline Forza games, I do enjoy Horizon quite a bit. With that in mind, I'm glad to see Microsoft's studios going back to focussing on making great gameplay without worrying about additional microtransactions or odd gimmicks like prize crates. Do many of you play Forza? What do you think of this latest move?
