Foxconn recently announced a pay increase for their production workers, however by cutting their maximum working hours in three factories on China, they may lose some of their workforce.

Foxconn have been featured in many news stories over the last 2 years, often featured because of  poor working conditions, long hours and minimum pay for their staff. In an effort to help resolve the public perception they entered into a 15 month program to improve the working situations and to cut overtime.

The company now face a new concern. The pay increase is so minor for many production staff that the cutting of hours is forcing them to consider new employment options.

A Foxconn worker, who wished to remain anonymous spoke to a local newspaper and said that the workers would prefer to have longer hours and overtime, so they could earn more money to get higher wages.

The worker said in an interview “Out of the 2,350 yuan (US$370) salary every month, we have to pay 190 yuan for social security insurance, 120 yuan for housing fund, 110 yuan for accommodation, and three meals a day. Life is tough.”

Auret Van Heerden, president and CEO of the FLA spoke to Reuters “A lot of workers have clearly come to Shenzhen to make as much money as they can in as short a period as they can, and overtime hours are very important in that calculation. We are picking up concerns now on the microblogs about what's likely to happen as hours gets changed, and whether their incomes will be shaved as well.”

Kitguru says: It seems sad that a company so involved in the creation of the world's leading technology devices can't maintain a well paid, happy work force.

One of Apple's main suppliers – Hon Hai Precision Industry Co (Foxconn) said yesterday that they have increased the basic salary of their production line workers by 16 percent. Staff in Zhengzhou, Henan province of China have been offered the increase, partly as the company are having problem recruiting people. They currently employ more than 1 million people in China.

In addition to the salary increase, Foxconn have reduced the probation period for all entry level staff from six months to three months. They hope this will attract people to work for the organisation.

The organisation have faced criticism from many quarters, due to poor working conditions and a raft of suicides in Shenzen during 2010. An explosion in the plant in Chengdu in 2011 killed an additional four workers. The company increased salaries and outfitted their worker dormitories with ‘safety nets' after those events.

The Fair Labor Association based in Washington urged Foxconn to improve their working environments earlier this year. Under pressure after a trip from Apple CEO Tim Cook in March, the company are taking further steps to improve their image, positively affecting their employees.

The FLA proceeded with audits and have said that conditions are improving. They said Hon Hai have fixed some of their most pressing workers rights violations in three of their Chinese factories – they are on track to fix other concerns mid 2013. The company have also enhanced their maintenance of safety equipment.

The FLA said that they need to reduce overtime hours for more than 170,000 employees to within ‘legal Chinese limits'.

From August 1st monthly salary excluding overtime compensation for production line works in Zhengzhou has increased from 1,550 yuan to 1,800 yuan. Hon Hai issued a statement last night detailing the improvements. All of their production line workers will receive a bonus of 200 yuan each month during the peak months between August and November.

Apple can't keep up with demand for the iPad 3, even with a growing list of hardware concerns. Apple are facing production concerns now due to a shortage of Retina displays and a shift in worker policy by Foxconn which has lowered the daily hours for their staff.

Shaw Yu, an analyst with Sterne Agee said that the demand for the iPad is still strong and he checked with the Apple supply chain to find that the touchscreen demand was still strong.

The supply of the high resolution Retina 2,048×1,536 pixel screen is limiting the shipments of the iPad 3 although Yu said that the situation should improve in the next quarter as additional production lines are added.

Samsung are the primary supplier for many components in the iPad 3, including the Retina display, however Sharp and LG are now helping with small volume shipments to take the strain from Samsung.

Apple have been heavily involved with the Fair Labor Association, keen to show the public they are working hard to improve worker conditions in the Far East. Partner Foxconn have subsequently lowered working hours as they move to fix violations found by the FLA audit. You can read more about this over here on AppleInsider.

Foxconn workers are not happy with the hours being cut to 49 per week, as it will mean they take home less money every month.
