We have been hearing about AMD's Radeon Pro Duo for a while now but today, the company is finally bringing it to the market, featuring 16 teraflops of compute performance and LiquidVR technology to help developers looking to dive in to creating virtual reality content.

Virtual Reality demands a lot of compute performance to ensure a consistent level of performance, which AMD wants to offer with the Radeon Pro Duo, as well as the LiquidVR SDK, which AMD claims to be the world's fastest platform to enable highly detailed VR experience.

Radeon Pro Duo

The Radeon Pro Duo isn't being pitched as a gaming card but rather, a tool for developers to help solve major problems with VR development by reducing latency and enabling faster workflows using FireRender technology, which offers up to 1.73 times GPU scaling. This is also the first product introduced as part of the AMD VR Ready Creator line-up of products, which is aimed at collaborating with and helping developers working on VR projects.

The Radeon Pro Duo will be available from today world-wide with a price tag of £1200/$1500 from select add-in board partners and system integrators. This means that it won't necessarily be widely available for consumers at standard retailers as you might expect.

KitGuru Says: While the Radeon R9 295×2 was served to a broader market, the Radeon Pro Duo has been designed mainly with VR development in mind. What do you guys think of the Radeon Pro Duo?

Right now, rumour is pointing towards AMD finally launching its dual-Fury graphics card, the AMD Radeon Pro, later this week and now that looks even more likely as some benchmark results for the card have leaked on to the web this evening. As we reported last week, at least one retailer has listed the Radeon Pro Duo for release tomorrow and now we have an early idea of what performance to expect against a GTX 980Ti.

Performance numbers for the Radeon Pro Duo were released by Expreview. The graphics card was tested across several modern games including The Division, Rise of the Tomb Raider, The Witcher 3 and Grand Theft Auto V at both 1080p and 4K resolutions.

AMD-Radeon-Pro-Duo-Benchmarks-Results_1080P_980-TI.jph_ AMD-Radeon-Pro-Duo-Benchmarks-Results_4K_GTX-980-Ti

Being a dual GPU card, performance will often depend on games having decent CrossFire support. That said, the Radeon Pro Duo seems to perform fairly well across these games and by the looks of it, anti-aliasing was left on in each game, which would cause an unnecessary hit to performance at 4K.

If last week's rumours were correct, then we should see the AMD Radeon Pro launch this week, with a price around the £1200-£1300/$1500 mark.

KitGuru Says: AMD's dual-Fury graphics card was unveiled alongside the Fury X way back at E3 last year, which was around ten months ago. It has taken a while but it looks like the card is finally going to hit the market. Do any of you happen to run a dual-GPU rig? What do you think of these performance results for the Radeon Pro Duo?

While AMD officially announced the Radeon Pro Duo several weeks ago at this point, boasting three times the power of a Titan Black, the company has yet to announce a release date for its dual-fury graphics card. However, one retailer may have jumped the gun, as a listing for the card has appeared online with a $2500 price tag and an estimated shipping date pencilled for the end of April.

This listing was found at PLE Computers in Australia and was pointed out to us by KitGuru reader Ethan Budge. Being an Australian store, that $2500 price tag would be AUD rather than USD, meaning in the US, the price translates to around $1941 and around £1350 here in the UK. Take pricing conversions with a pinch of salt though, as this doesn't take into account any additional costs, like VAT, which can vary from country to country.

Radeon Pro DUo listing

Back when the Radeon Pro Duo was first officially unveiled, we heard that the card would launch with a price tag of around $1500 in the US, or around £1250 in the UK once 20 percent VAT is factored in.

The final bit of information this listing gives us is a potential release date. Previous rumours have pointed to an end of April release date for this GPU and this listing seems to support that, with a 26/04/16 ETA in shipping. So if you're in the market for a new dual-GPU graphics card, then you may want to keep your eyes peeled at the end of the month, assuming this information is correct.

KitGuru Says: AMD has had this card planned since it first announced the Fury-line of GPUs last year but it looks like an actual release date may just be on the horizon. The R9 295X2 was a pretty popular card so it will be interesting to see if the Radeon Pro Duo can recapture that.

While AMD initially announced its dual-fiji graphics card way back alongside the Fury last year, it has taken quite some time to get it out of the door. AMD revealed the finished Radeon Pro Duo about a month ago now, boasting three times the power of a Titan Black and now it looks like the card might finally go on sale at the end of April.

According to Hardware Battle (via videocardz), AMD is planning to actually launch the Radeon Pro Duo on the 26th of April, though those with review units may be able to publish sooner than that, according to these rumours.

duopro01

As we already know, the Radeon Pro Duo features two Fiji GPUs with a total of 8192 Stream Processors and 8GB of HBM VRAM, which works out as 4GB per GPU. It also comes with a re-worked All in One liquid cooling system built by Cooler Master, which AMD has been tinkering with since the R9 295 X2.

This won't be a cheap purchase though as it is set to launch with a price tag of $1499.

KitGuru Says: AMD has been working on its dual-fiji graphics card for almost a year now so this has been a long time coming. Are any of you waiting to make the jump to AMD's new dual-GPU? Are you holding out for new Polaris or Pascal graphics cards instead?

AMD may have waited a little while to debut its dual Fiji XT graphics card, but it seems like the wait was worth it. AMD has today begun showing off the monstrous card, with an equally insane price tag, but has said it's capable of 16 TFLOPS of computing power, making it approximately three times as powerful as a Nvidia Titan Black.

It's almost 50 per cent faster than a R9 295×2 as well,  easily making this card, known as the Radeon Pro Duo, the most powerful GPU in the world when it's released at some point in “early Q2” this year. Considering AMD has talked up its ability to create and consume VR content, we would expect AMD to be pushing it strong in this sector.

duopro01

“AMD’s next step in advancing VR is with the new AMD Radeon Pro Duo, an incredibly advanced and powerful dual-GPU board that delivers the horsepower needed by VR designers, content creators, and for VR content consumers,” it said in a release.

Although the specifications under the hood are yet to be announced, AMD did talk up how other companies are already enjoying the benefits of the high-powered, single-PCB graphics card. Crytek announced it would be working in conjunction with AMD to provide hardware and software to schools and universities to help foster VR development – with the Radeon Pro Duo powering all of it.

“We see Radeon Pro Duo, which includes two of the fastest GPU chips available packaged on a single card as pivotal in meeting the increasing production demands across the previsualization and production industries alike,” said Crytek creative director, Jean-Colas Prunier.

We'll update this story as and when we learn more about what's under the hood of the new card, but expect it to set you back $1,500 (£1,250 (inc. 20 per cent VAT)) when it launches.

KitGuru Says: That is a truly monstrous card. Considering how good scaling can be under DirectX12 and in VR too, we would expect this card to be the perfect partner for 4K gaming.

AMD's Radeon Technologies Group will be having an Ask Me Anything (AMA) session this week, during which new information is expected to be revealed regarding the upcoming Fury X2 dual-chip graphics card as well as the newly announced Polaris GPU architecture.

The AMA takes place on the 3rd of March, which is this Thursday and one of the moderators in charge has posted a list of topics that AMD are open to talking about during it, which include Polaris, Fury X2, FreeSync, GPUOpen, Vulkan, VR and DirectX 12. AMD will not be talking about its future Zen CPUs though as they are still ‘super secret'.

AMD's Fury X2 graphics card was actually announced last Summer and was initially due to launch late last year. Unfortunately, delays have pushed things back and now it is rumoured that AMD is holding the card back on purpose in order to time its launch with the Oculus Rift and HTC Vive.

AMD has also talked a little bit about Polaris already this year, with one low power chip being shown off at CES earlier this year. The first Polaris graphics cards are also expected to release this year.

KitGuru Says: Hopefully AMD will be open to shedding some light on the Fury X2 situation during this AMA as many people are pretty curious at this point. Are any of you waiting on new hardware news from AMD? Any plans to upgrade this year?

VRLA kicked off over the weekend and it seems that both AMD and Nvidia showed up with prototype hardware. Nvidia went to the event armed with a Light Field Display headset while AMD and PC builder Falcon Northwest came to the event with PCs featuring the long-awaited dual-Fiji GPU.

Nvidia's Light Field Display is a prototype and while the company is currently showing off the device rarely at events like VRLA, it isn't disclosing many details so we don't actually know anything about it. We do have the following picture from Nvidia's Twitter account though:

AMD on the other hand has once again teased its upcoming GPU, which is codenamed ‘Gemini'. This is AMD's upcoming dual-GPU card featuring two Fury X chips on one PCB. This particular graphics card was announced alongside the Fury and Fury X last year but unfortunately, it has seen some delays to release.

Fury-X2-e1448651799283

Right now, the current rumour is that AMD will finally release the Fury X2 (or whatever AMD does decide to call the card) around March or April in order to position it as the card for those looking to pick up one of the first wave of virtual reality headsets, such as the HTC Vive or Oculus Rift.

KitGuru Says: We don't really know anything about Nvidia's prototype head display yet but we have heard quite a lot about AMD's new dual-GPU card. Are any of you currently waiting on AMD to release Gemini/Fury X2? What do you think of Nvidia experimenting with its own head-mounted display?

We've been hearing quite a bit about AMD's upcoming Fury X2/Gemini dual GPU over the last couple of months. However, we may not see the card launch for a while, if new rumours are to be believed, as AMD may be delaying its launch to coincide with the release of virtual reality headsets like the Oculus Rift and HTC Vive.

Originally, it was said that AMD would launch the Fury  X2 by Christmas this year. However, according to a report from hardware.fr, this has now changed, with availability expected in Q2 2016.

Fury-X2-e1448651799283

“Some delays due to VR in overall ecosystem readiness, HMDS are now expected to be available to Consumers by early Q216. To Ensure the best VR experience, we're adjusting the Fiji Gemini launch schedule to better align with the market.”

AMD's upcoming dual-Fiji GPU card was initially announced alongside the Fury lineup earlier this year. However, the launch of the card has been pushed back quite a bit and will now end up releasing closer to next year's Arctic Island GPUs, which are also expected to launch later on in 2016.

KitGuru Says: A lot of people were impressed by the R9 295X2 and may have been waiting for AMD's new dual-GPU offering. However, it looks like it won't be coming out for a bit longer. Are any of you currently running a dual-GPU card? Are you planning on upgrading your PC in time for the Oculus/Vive headset launches?

Last week, we heard talk of AMD's dual GPU graphics card, the Fury X2, which is currently rumoured to be set to launch this month with an announcement event planned for within the next couple of weeks. However, while the announcement might be coming this month, it may not be available to buy for a bit longer and could face delays.

This is all according to a report from benchlife.info, which says that while AMD is planning on officially introducing the card in December, and some add-in board partners may already have samples, mass production isn't set to gear up until Q1 2016, so the card may not hit store shelves for a little while.

Fury-X2-e1448651799283

Obviously, we have no way of verifying benchlife's sources, so take all of this with a pinch of salt. What we do know, is that the Fury X2, referred to internally as ‘Gemini', will feature two unlocked Fiji cores on a single PCB, equipped with 4GB of high-bandwidth memory per graphics core. Due to the way CrossFire works, memory per core doesn't stack, so you will still effectively be using 4GB, rather than 8GB.

Whether this pans out or not, stay tuned in the coming weeks for more information as we get closer and closer to AMD's official announcement.

Discuss on our Facebook page, HERE.

KitGuru Says: While a new GPU announcement could be exciting, that hype could wear off if AMD can't follow-up with units on store shelves fairly soon after. That said, this is all still rumour for now, so we will wait and see what happens before coming to any real conclusions. Are any of you running a dual-GPU card at the moment? Are you waiting on the dual-Fiji card?

AMD's next dual-GPU graphics card has been tipped to launch next month. The card was initially shown off back in June at the announcement of AMD's new 300-series and Fury line-up and has been in development under the codename ‘Gemini', though things have been fairly quiet since then. The card itself will feature two fully unlocked Fiji graphics chips.

AMD found success with its last dual-GPU solution, the R9 295X2, which featured a closed loop water cooler. The Fury X2/Gemini will also feature a closed loop presumably, though we won't know for sure until the announcement scheduled for next month. That said, one DICE developer did recently receive a pre-release GPU, though the liquid cooling loop was broken on arrival, according to this tweet.

Fury X2

DICE and AMD have a close relationship, partnering on titles like Battlefield and Battlefront. DICE developers were also amongst the first to receive Fury cards, so it would make sense for them to have access to the new dual-GPU card.

Right now, it doesn't look like Nvidia is planning an Nvidia 990 or a successor to the Titan Z, though that could change at some point in the coming months.

KitGuru Says: Quite a few of our readers went out and bought R9 295 X2s when they launched. Are any of you still using CrossFire? Would you consider this dual-fiji card?
