Many of you will remember the AMD ‘Bulldozer' class action lawsuit, claiming that the series of FX processors were falsely advertised and overstated the number of cores on the chip. The lawsuit has been going on for around four years now but today, it officially comes to an end, with AMD reaching a settlement agreement.

The class action suit alleged that the eight-core Bulldozer FX CPUs were falsely advertised as having eight cores. This stems from the CPU's design, as while Windows would recognise each Bulldozer module as two separate cores, they shared a single FPU as well as instruction and execution resources.

Fortunately, we won't need a judge to try and rule on what is officially classed as a CPU core anymore. AMD has reached a settlement agreement, which will include a $12.1 million pay out, split roughly into $35 chunks amongst US buyers of eight-core Bulldozer chips.

The settlement comes at a good time, as in January, a judge had ruled that the lawsuit could proceed after rejecting AMD's argument that a “significant majority” of consumers agreed with its definition of a CPU core.

KitGuru Says: I didn't expect that we would still be talking about Bulldozer now in 2019 but here we are. It looks like this case can now be wrapped up, although there will be another update in the future when these class action payouts start going out.

Virtual reality is getting a huge push this year with plenty of VR or Oculus-ready PCs hitting the market over the next few months. While we have known the recommended specification for gaming on an Oculus Rift for a while, most places have been listing Intel CPUs. So now, AMD has officially listed its Oculus VR capable processors.

So far, AMD has tested five processors for VR, most of which are eight core, with one six-core part making the list. First up is the FX-9590 and FX-9370, which run at 4.7 GHz and 4.4 GHz respectively (not counting boost clock). Next up are the FX-8370 and FX8350, two eight-core chips that break the 4GHz barrier and finally, AMD has also tested the FX-6350, the only six-core part on the list.

It is worth noting that the official Oculus PC compatibility checker does not work on any of the CPUs on AMD's list. However, as Forbes points out, this is a pretty simple tool so if it sees a processor that isn't an Intel Core i5-4690 or better, then it will simply say that your CPU is not compatible. This carries over to older generation Core i7 chips as well.

According to the AMD representative speaking with Forbes, the list given here is capable of VR, despite not having the single-core performance of Intel's processors. DirectX 12 utilization is also said to help a great deal, so AMD CPU users should be able to get by just fine as long as their GPU is up to the task.

KitGuru Says: The official requirements from Oculus didn't list any AMD CPUs so it looks like AMD has taken testing into its own hands here. Things will likely improve further once Zen arrives at the end of this year. Are any of you currently running an AMD processor? Will you be picking up a VR headset this year?

A few days ago AMD’s Roy Taylor teased us on Twitter with a picture of an unnamed CPU from the FX series. However, the cat is out of the bag now and we know that AMD's mysterious CPU is in-fact going to be a re-launch of the 5GHz FX-9590 bundled with a liquid cooler, which is tipped to be the Cooler Master Seidon 120 AIO LCS.

The scoop originally came from Hardware Canucks, who spoke to some guys over at AMD. The inclusion of an All in One liquid cooler will supposedly allow the chip to hit its 5GHz turbo clock frequency more often than it could on air.

FX-9590-123

The FX-9590 is based on AMD's Piledriver architecture, it comes with a base clock of 4.7GHz but under the right conditions, it can turbo up to 5GHz. The chip does need the extra cooling as it tends to run very hot with a TDP of around 219W.

FX-9590-1234

The original FX-9590 will now cost around $319 while the re-launched chip bundled with the Cooler Master AIO will sell for $359. Bernard Fernandes, senior spokesman for AMD told Hardware Canucks: “With a 5GHz boost clock and 8 powerful cores coupled with an effective cooling solution, it is our highest performance desktop processor. This is ideal for enthusiasts who want to build the best of AMD with an AMD Radeon R9 graphics card.”

KitGuru Says: AMD seems to be on the right track at the moment, many would agree that shipping the recently released R9 295×2 with an AIO unit attatched was a smart idea and its nice to see the trend continue in to the company's high end CPU line. Do any of you guys own an FX-9590? Would you consider it now that it is being relaunched with a decent cooler?

A freshly leaked slide updating us on future models in AMD's FX Series desktop processor lineup has made its way onto the web from the powers that be and what we can learn from this particular leak is that there will be three new AM3+ 32nm FX models arriving before this quarter comes to an end. All three chips run a 95 W TDP and include the FX-4150 quad core, FX-6120 hexa-core and FX-8140 octo-core.

The FX-4150 has a 3.9GHz base clock speed with 4.1GHz Turbo speed and carries 12MB of cache in the form of 4MB L2 and 8MB L3. The FX-6120 runs at 3.5GHz and also has a 4.1GHz Turbo clock speed with 14MB of cache.

Looking at the FX-8140, it's a 3.2GHz clocked part again with 4.1GHz Turbo and includes 16MB of cache.

KitGuru says: Pricing details on the new chips are yet to be disclosed, which is really what it all boils down to for AMD's FX line if it has a chance of snapping up sales from its fierce competitor.

Just days after Intel's new additions to its Core i5 range of processors, we're now hearing of AMD's upcoming move to roll in a few more FX series processor models in the form of the FX-4170, FX-6200 and FX-8150 LCS.

A pre-order price list has been sighted which also shares some details with us on the specs. Beginning with the quad-core FX-4170, this multiplier-unlocked chip with 8MB of L3 cache carries an impressive stock clock rate of 4.2GHz, with Turbo kicking things up a notch to 4.3GHz; making it the first retail AMD CPU with a stock clock speed higher than 4GHz.

Shifting focus to the FX-6200, this hexa-cored model has a 3.8GHz core frequency that will go as high as 4.1GHz with Turbo enabled. It, like the FX-4170 before it sports 8MB of L3 cache and a 125W TDP.

As for the FX-8150 LCS, this is for the U.S. market and as many of you would have been quick to work out, it is an existing eight-core processor model in AMD's FX-Series, but with liquid cooling bundled and carrying a part number of FD8150FRGUWOX versus the boxed air-cooled model which uses a part number of FD8150FRGUBOX. The processor itself remains the same of course, with its 3.6GHz core clock (4.1GHz Turbo), 8MB of L3 cache and also running a TDP of 125W not unlike the two aforementioned models.

Down to the final piece of the picture, pricing. The FX-4170 has its pre-order price set at US $153.27 (expected to drop once released to market), while the FX-6200 runs a pre-order price tag of US $188.48 at the time of writing. It's not at all surprising that the LCS version of the FX-8150 carries quite a heftier price tag than its air-cooled brother; this model being currently listed for US $398.29.

We're unsure at this stage as to when exactly AMD is aiming to pull the trigger on these three new FX-series chips.

KitGuru says: With AMD's only real strength at this time being in the value sense when compared to its mighty rival, it's hard to imagine anyone justifying pricing anywhere near that margin on the FX-8150 LCS.
