Often at gadget and tech trade shows, I like to focus on the smaller stands as that's where the interesting stuff is usually found. However, at Gadget Show Live 2015, one of the more intriguing booths was one of the biggest. HP was showing off its new idea for the desktop, called the Sprout. Sporting an i7 CPU, built in projector and 3D scanner, it's a near £2,000 system with a unique look and idea for the future.

sprout05

Don't let the lack of people worry you. This was a press day, the place was empty when compared with the consumer visitor days.

sprout06

The Sprout is very similar to some of the concept designs Intel released a couple of years ago about redesigning and reimagining the desktop. It's an all in one system, with all of the hardware loaded behind the 23″ LED display. However what's special about the Sprout is that at its base, where the keyboard would usually go, is an even bigger multi-touch pad. On to this, the system projects a secondary display, letting you have two different screens, both of which are touch sensitive.

Where the Sprout really gets clever though, is that the projector mount also houses a 3D scanner.

sprout03 sprout01

Much of the system's controls are located on a touch panel in the base. With a couple of quick presses, the 3D face mask placed on the touchpad is quickly digitised and can be manipulated on either display via touch or mouse input.

sprout04

The image rendered isn't perfect, but for something that takes just a few seconds it was very impressive.

Other hardware features include 8GB of RAM and 1TB hybrid storage drive, combined with an 8GB SSD. It's running Windows 8.1 at the moment, but expect a 10 upgrade to come with it later this year.

Current models are priced at £1,900.

KitGuru Says: Combine this with a 3D printer and you could duplicate anything up to a certain size quite nicely. While this system doesn't pack a hefty GPU for gaming, do you think this is the way most desktops will go?

Cherry is a company you all know as the maker of the universally popular MX keyboard switches. Whether you're a fan of brown, black, red, blue or any of the other coloured variants, chances are if you have a mechanical keyboard you have Cherry MX switches. There are a few exceptions of course, but for the most part Cherry provides the same mechanical switches to keyboard makers that it has for 30 years. While that isn't changing in its upcoming board, it has made some tweaks that could be of interest to gamers and typists alike.

cherry01

The board in question is called the MX Board 6.0 and although not the most stylish keyboard you've ever seen, it does come with one feature that will likely please fans of raw speed. The 6.0 is equipped with Cherry MX Red switches (though others may be considered down the road), so it's already fast in that those are the lightest switches Cherry does, but with the inclusion of “analogue parts,” along with digital ones, Cherry has reportedly got the actuation time for each key down from 4ms to just 1ms.

cherry02

The keys on the board feel very crisp and clean to type on, not unlike traditional Cherry MX switches. I'm not sure I could tell much of a difference, but then again I'm no pro gamer.

cherry03 cherry04

The 6.0 comes with its own magnetically attached wrist rest, which can be removed with ease and will retail for around £150. It has some basic backlighting options, but nothing as in-depth as many of its competitors. The release date is pegged for some time within the next month or so.

Discuss on our Facebook page, HERE.

KitGuru Says: We will of course be doing our best to get one of these boards in for a review, but in the mean time, what do you guys think? Cherry makes great switches, but can it make a great keyboard?

Cooler Master has announced a new miniature keyboard design, with a standard layout (minus the numpad extras) and mechanical switches. But the real selling point, is the fancy LED effects it can put out thanks to its onboard, 32bit ARM processor.

Unfortunately beyond a little mouse-over light show on this preview page, we don't have much more to go on, which is presumably intentional, since Cooler Master is advertising the fact that you'll be able to see the new Rapid-I in action at the upcoming Gadget Show Live event next weekend, running between the 9th and 13th April.

irapid

“The new, fully backlit QuickFire Rapid-I is equipped with an ARM processor that enables responsive illumination, trailing effects, and individual key lighting profiles. Light ‘em Up,” says the Cooler Master release, which sounds like keys might light up as you press them, which could look awesome for gaming, but even more impressive for fast typers.

We can take a guess at the type of mechanical switches being used too. Since we're told they're tactile but quiet, we know they have feedback but no “click.” The guess there would be brown switches, which have some feedback but  don't clack away quite so much as their cousins the blues.

The only other feature we know of, is that the USB cable can be removed for easier transit.

KitGuru Says: I'm interested. Not going to lie. Would prefer a full size one, but if this one's successful I don't doubt they'll expand the range.

If you've always wanted to go to the Gadget Show Live, meet the team, see the latest releases of games, hardware and assorted tech but never made it before, now's your chance to make it there for a lot less, as Synology is giving away tickets. But you'll have to convince it that you want to go more than anyone else.

It's a Twitter competition, so head over to @SynologyUk to see what it's up to and watch out for the specific GSL tweets. When one goes out, you'll have until the end of the day to send over your top reason for going, whether it's because it's your birthday, or you've always wanted to get chucked out after throwing something at the presenters. While neither of those may guarantee victory, you'll have to get creative to stand out amongst your fellow gadgeteers.

synology

Also, make sure when you send out the tweet, you include the Stretch Armstrong of hashtags, “#SynologyAtGadgetShowLive.”

If you're a fan of the NAS maker, make sure you check out the company stand at Q95, as it'll have the new Diskstation Manager 5.0 on show.

KitGuru Says: There will probably be some KitGuru staff there as well, so keep an eye out for a team of highly handsome tech journos if you do attend.

Tech enthusiasts from across the country are flocking to Birmingham this week to attend the Gadget Show Live at the NEC.  Doors opened to the public today but KitGuru was there yesterday on the press day to give you a sneak peak of what you can expect to see!

The Gadget Show Live is a massive event and there really is something to see for everyone.  There are specific sections for different classes of gadget from home gadgets to in-car gadgets.  Of course, KitGuru's reporters headed straight for the Game Zone to see what was on show.

Antec's booth caught our eyes first with it's unique black and yellow colour scheme.  They had a wide range of their products on display from Power Supplies to notebook coolers.  They were also showing off their new range of gadget cleaning products which includes a spray kit and cleaning wipes.

Turtle Beach was enticing gamers in with a large display of their latest and greatest Xbox 360 and PS3 headsets.  They were also letting people try out their headsets on Ridge Racer Unbounded.

Visiting the Mad Catz stand was far more exciting, though, as they had a vast number of brand new products on display.  They made a big point of informing us that their new range of Tritton Xbox 360 headsets are the only officially licensed and co-branded Xbox 360 headsets on the market.  These were installed on all of Microsoft's Xbox 360 modules across the show, not just on the Mad Catz stand.

They were also showcasing their new range of Ghost Recon Future Soldier gaming peripherals, including specially crafted controllers for PS3 and Xbox 360 an impressive 7.1 surround sound headset, modelled by PR Guru Alex Verrey.

They also demonstrated their new MLG Pro Circuit Tournament Grade Xbox 360 controller which has a number of unique features including switchable D-pad and joystick modules and replaceable faceplates.

Whilst wondering past the Microlab stand, some familiar award logos caught our eyes!  Microlab was showcasing a few different products from their speaker range including the Microlab Solo6C which we reviewed here.

Wacom were demonstrating their latest iPad stylus, the Stylus Duo which is an updated version of the Bamboo Stylus which features a pen in the other end.  They also had some of their Bamboo graphics tablets on display for people to play with.

Nice when something stops you dead in your tracks. By day, ProMech Racing create tools for serious drivers to tune serious cars. By night? By night we believe they create dark coverns in the deep forest and slaughter animals. Well, it's got to be one of the possibilities. KitGuru switches to macro for detailed close-ups.

It's one thing to put your plastic bottles into a blue bin and offer them to the recycling truck every fortnight. We all do it and feel like we're doing our bit for the planet. It's quite something else to pull out an oxyacetylene torch, don protective gear and weld big chunks of raw metal into glorious alien furniture.

We could prattle on for ages, but it's so much easier to just show you what we mean.

This Alien Coffee Table is 42cm high with a glass top that's 120cm x 60cm. It costs around £399

.

ProMech's Predator Lamp Table seems like really good value at just £179. Armed to the teeth.

.

It's worth getting really close to these stunning pieces. The closer you get, the more you realise the complexity of how each used component fits together with its neighbour to create a modern masterpiece.

KitGuru says: With prices ranging from £179 to £2,299 – it might seem like a lot to ask for ‘junk', but this is true art in all its raw, dirty, mechanical form and we love it.

At the opening day of the Gadget Show LIVE at the Birmingham NEC, visitors were able to get hands-on with the fastest MSI notebook yet. It's a bit of a beast and KitGuru spies were on hand to snap the snaps.

It's hard to imagine an industry where records are broken with the same kind of regularity as the world of the PC (desktop and notebook).

No sooner has one product arrived in the market, than its successor is being lined up – ready to go. Do we care?  Apparently not. Let's be honest, we're insatiable and shameless. Bigger, faster and more powerful continues to draw us poor geeks like a KitGuru-moth to the wage-consuming flame.

Fear not, MSI has served up another slice of  ‘Oh, yes please!' at the NEC.

It took us almost 20 minutes to prise MSI's marketing uber-guru John Inwood away from his army of adoring fans, in order to take this picture. Popular chap.

This time, marketing whizz, John Inwood, was on hand to explain that MSI is dead serious about mobile computing overall and hardcore gaming laptops in particular. Well, with key sponsorship of pro-gaming-outfit Fnatic – MSI will need to innovate and deliver the goods on a regular basis. Pro-gamers don't like second best.

So, what does the MSI 780 look like and what does it deliver?

Well, the latest Intel Core i7 mobile processor drives boost nice and fast from a pair of 500GB drives in RAID 0 formation. Gaming on the 1080p screen comes from the nVidia GT555M graphics card with 1GB of GDDR5. While the processing and visual engine are great, we're gonna go out on a limb and say that the audio probably deserves to be output to something more substantial than the built in speakers. While they are nice enough, the THX TruStudio Pro capability no doubt yearns for something more.

It's a substantial device with a SteelSeries keyboard built in. Here's an earlier mock-up we created in the KitGuru studio, alongside the beast itself, exposed up at the Gadget Show.

Not quite sure why MSI chose to showcase its fastest laptop ever with nature shots of ducks in natural habitats. We much prefer Crysis 2 in all its HD, nanosuited glory

KitGuru says: Mobile gaming solutions like MSI's GX780R, are finally delivering the kind of portable power that pro-gamers need to progress in competitive gaming. Most will still prefer their desktop units, but the gap between desktop and laptop has never been slimmer.
