The Samsung Galaxy S5 is finally starting to receive the Android 5.0 Lollipop update. Samsung began rolling out the latest version of Google's OS earlier this week, these updates usually happen in waves so some people may not have access just yet but it won't take too long.

As always, Android will be bundled with the Samsung made Touch Wiz skin, which may be receiving a design overhaul with the launch of the Galaxy S6 in a few months time. Samsung's Lollipop update is based on slightly older code, which did contain some bugs, so there may be an issue or two on launch.

S5-600x439

New features that Samsung Galaxy S5 owners can expect include Mirror Link, improved fingerprint sensor functionality thanks to new drivers as well as lockscreen and heads-up notifications.

While stock Android users will now be running 5.0.1, Samsung users will be stuck with 5.0 for a while so there may be some bugs left in the older code. There's no telling how long it will take for Samsung to issue its next update but hopefully the company can start to speed things up a bit once the Galaxy S6 launches.

KitGuru Says: The HTC One M8 should also be receiving the Android Lollipop update this month. Hopefully if the rumors are true and Samsung does move to a more ‘stock-like' version of Touch Wiz, then the company may be able to push out updates faster.

The Samsung Galaxy Note 4 appears to have leaked ahead of its supposed unveiling next month, revealing its full specifications which include a 1440p QHD display and a Snapdragon 805 processor.

This leak comes via a retailer based in India, Eraphone, which is prematurely taking pre-orders for the upcoming device. If the leak is to be believed, the Galaxy Note 4 will feature a 5.7 Inch 2560×1440 Super AMOLED display with a 515ppi pixel density.

Samsung-Galaxy-Note-4

Powering the device will be a 2.5 GHz, Qualcomm Snapdragon 805 quad-core CPU or possibly a Samsung Exynos 5433 chip depending on what part of the world your're in. You'll also find 4GB of RAM under the hood all running Google's Android 4.4.3 Kit Kat Operating System.

Like most Samsung devices, the Note 4 will be available in 16GB, 32GB and 64GB iterations although all of them will include a micro SD card slot capable of adding in an addition 128GB of storage. The listing also confirms a 16MP rear facing camera and a £500 price tag. This leak comes just a day after the official announcement of the Samsung Galaxy Alpha, which will ditch Samsung's often used plastic design in favor of a metal frame.

The Korean company has sent out invitations to events taking place in six cities across the world with San Francisco, New York, and London events all taking place at the exact same time to avoid spoiling the announcement. While LG didn't exactly come out and say that they were going to announce the G3, The Verge points out that the company did acknowledge the upcoming flagship in its earnings report yesterday.

Like most phones since the release of the iPhone 5s, a gold variant is expected to release, other rumoured specs include a 2560×1440 screen as well as super thin bezels. The G3 will attempt to loosen Samsung's grip on the Android market while also competing against HTC's One M8.

LG is also currently working on a smart watch too, the G-Watch is now expected to launch in June for under €200, thanks to a report from les numeriques: “LG France confirms that the G Watch shows available in our region in the month of June, and costs only 199 €.”

One of the most important features of modern smartphones is, without any doubts, their ability to survive during drops, falls and other incidents. The new Samsung Galaxy S5 is clearly better than the Samsung Galaxy S4 from 2013 when it comes to performance and design. But which one is more rugged? The specialists from TechSmartt decided to find out.

During the crash test, the experimenters dropped both smartphones from pocket height (around 70cm), which is a simulation of a real-world situation when a phone falls out of a pocket. Both smartphones (most importantly, their displays) survived the test without any problems, but both got slight visual damages.

Both handsets also survived drops from head height (a simulation of a situation when the phone is dropped while making a call), but with much more significant damages. While screens of both the Galaxy S5 and Galaxy S4 remined undamaged, the cracks their cases received were much more noticeable.

When phones were dropped from above the head height with their displays facing downwards, no screen was cracked. However, the Galaxy S4’s backside panel was substantially damaged.

[yframe url='http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=py6zXJoS-cE']

When dropped off from about 10-foot height, the protective glass of the Galaxy S4 was cracked since it landed on the corner; nonetheless, the screen itself remained undamaged and could display images. The Galaxy S5 landed in a better “position”, so its display covered with Corning Gorilla Glass was not damaged at all.

What was surprising is that after the Galaxy S5 survived several drop tests, it remained undamaged even after it was run over by a heavy car. The only substantial damage was a cracked glass on the camera.

KitGuru Says: Keeping in mind that the Samsung Galaxy S5 smartphone is made mostly of plastic, its ability to withstand rather catastrophic occurrences cannot be called otherwise, but fantastic. Still, keep in mind that there is a big portion of luck in the drop tests. Most of today’s smartphones should survive when they fall “face down”, but when they land on the corners, they deform for a while and crack the protective glasses.

It seems that some phone makers are still cheating in Android benchmarks as HTC has admitted that it optimised the One (M8) to push itself harder than normal in order to get higher benchmark results. People began suspecting that this was the case when the new HTC phone began dominating benchmarks, beating out competitors like the Samsung Galaxy S5.

Late last year, AnandTech discovered that almost every Android phone maker had been cheating benchmarks, in-fact, it was so bad that only two companies managed to keep its hands clean: Motorola and Apple. Last year device makers didn't really have an excuse but this year HTC has one lined up- When the new HTC One detects benchmarking software it will automatically turn on a “high performance” mode, which can be toggled on or off by any user in the settings menu.

Benchmarking

“Benchmarking tests look to determine maximum performance of the CPU and GPU and, similar to the engine in a high-performance sports car, our engineers optimise in certain scenarios to produce the best possible performance. If someone would like to get around this benchmarking optimisation there are ways to do so, but we think most often this will not be the case.”

KitGuru Says: HTC has a pretty good explanation this time around, it's not like the speed boost that activates in benchmarks isn't normally accessible. High performance mode comes as a feature on the phone and can be turned on by anyone, so I wouldn't really class this as cheating. What do you guys think? Is this still a form of cheating benchmarks?

Samsung Electronics is reportedly facing more issues with production of its new flagship smartphone, the Galaxy S5. In addition to a fire on a fab that produces printed-circuit boards for the device, there are problems with production of lenses for the Galaxy S5 cameras.

Samsung is seemingly having trouble manufacturing 16MP camera modules that are thin enough to fit in the Galaxy S5′s form-factor without decreasing the quality of the lenses within the camera module. South Korea-based web-site ETNews reports citing sources with knowledge of the matter that by mid-March Samsung still has not started mass production of the camera modules due to poor yields between 20% and 30%.

“On a thin lens, even the slightest flaw results in a considerable optical distortion,” one of the sources said, according to a report by BGR. “To make plastic lens thinner, a more accurate mold technology is necessary.”

samsung_galaxy_s5_life

Samsung intends to start shipping the Galaxy S5 smartphones on the 11th of April, 2014, which means that it needs to ensure that it has enough camera modules as well as printed-circuit boards for its upcoming flagship smartphones now. The problem is that is hard to fix issues when a product is being mass produced.

Once a product hits mass production, it is impossible to change its specifications or manufacturing technology. As a result, in case Samsung cannot meet yield targets, it will either have to redesign the Galaxy S5, change its specs or alter materials used for production.

KitGuru Says: The Galaxy S5 seems to be somewhat unlucky smartphone for Samsung. Its formal introduction was brought forward after the company faced declines of the model S4 sales in the fourth quarter. Then the fab where Samsung produced PCBs for the smartphone caught a fire. Now there are problems with camera modules. Will Samsung really launch the new flagship on time? It is clearly not cast in stone now.

The fire at a factory which produces printed circuit boards in Anseon, South Korea, could affect availability of Samsung Electronics’ Galaxy S5 smartphone. The PCBs for the new flagship smartphones were damaged by the fire, just like manufacturing equipment, according to a media report.

The fire was first reported at around 7AM on Sunday, the 9th of March, 2014. Asia News Agency reports that it took approximately 280 firefighters about six hours to stop the fire at the fab. Numerous fire trucks, helicopters and other machines were used to cease the fire, which destroyed production and equipment worth about $1 billion (€721 million, £601 million). Around 15 people were evacuated from the factory, there are no reports about injuries of casualties.

samsung_pcb_fab_fire_1

The PCB factory, among other things, produces printed-circuit boards for Samsung Galaxy S5 flagship smartphone. The already made PCBs were damaged, which will reduce amount of the new smartphones that will hit the market.

samsung_pcb_fab_fire

While Samsung most probably has several PCB suppliers, the damage of the fab in Anseon, South Korea, will most likely affect availability of the Galaxy S5 in at least some regions.
Samsung intends to start shipping the Galaxy S5 smartphones on the 11th of April, 2014, which means that it does not have a lot of time to boost production.

KitGuru Says: Fires are not uncommon at chip and PCB assembly fabs. In some cases, such fires affect launches of certain products. In many other cases they affect supply and prices of certain components.

It was a bit disappointing that Samsung Electronics did not reveal its 64-bit application processors for mobile devices at the Mobile World Congress 2014 under its Exynos Infinity initiative. Nonetheless, the company vows that it will introduce its first ARMv8-compatible chips later this year.

Samsung’s arch-rival Apple has been selling iPhone 5s and iPad Air based on 64-bit A7 system-on-chip for several months now. While hardly a lot of software for iOS can utilise 64-bit processing capability, many end-users intuitively believe that Apple’s 64-bit chips are faster than Samsung’s 32-bit chips. Probably, Samsung Exynos 5440 system-on-chip with eight cores that work in Big.Little HMP [heterogeneous multi-processing] configuration (which means that only four high-performance Cortex-A15 cores will work under peak load) can offer higher horsepower than dual-core Apple A7, 64-bit technology still remains very important for Samsung and the industry.

“64-bit is very important in the sense that there is a real demand, whether you need it or not,” said Kyushik Hong, vice president of marketing for Samsung's system LSI business, in an interview with Cnet News. “We are very actively working on it.”

64-bit chips are important because modern smartphones and tablets process a lot of various data since people want powerful applications and rich multimedia on their mobile gadgets. In addition, 64-bit processors will allow to install more than 4GBs of memory into a device, which is important for Samsung as programs developed for Android operating system are hungry for memory.

samsung_exynos_5_octa_2

At present the company believes that it will launch its 64-bit chips on time with the first 64-bit version of Google Android. Recently a leading designer of mobile system-on-chips said that the Android would gain 64-bit support sometimes in the third quarter 2014.

“Our chip will be ready whenever the operating systems and ecosystem go 64-bit,” said Mr. Hong. “We are pretty sure we are not going to be the bottleneck for that.”

KitGuru Says: Looks like the first customers who will buy the all-new Galaxy S5 at launch may get somewhat disappointed in Q3 when Samsung might offer a new version of the smartphone with a 64-bit SoC and 64-bit Android 5.0 operating system.

The Samsung Galaxy S5 is official and in typical Samsung fashion, it has been packed with features, some useful and some not so much. The phone retains the usual Galaxy flagship look, only this year it comes in a little bigger with a 5.1 inch screen, a beefier camera and the ability to monitor your heart rate.

Following in the footsteps of the Sony Xperia line, the Galaxy S5 will be both water and dust resistant, meaning that theoretically you'd be fine watching videos in the tub but Samsung has pointed out that it's still not wise to submerge the phone. The general build quality of the device will remain the same which is a shame as HTC set a good example last year with its all aluminium flagship device but for now, Samsung is sticking to polycarbonate.

The South Korean phone maker likes to bring in a slightly bigger screen each year, the Galaxy S3 sported a 4.7 Inch 720p screen, the S4 upped that with a 5 Inch 1080p screen and now on the S5 we've got a 5.1 Inch OLED display but the resolution will remain the same at 1080p, which contradicts some of the more persistent rumours suggesting a 2K resolution was on the cards. While the screen resolution and build quality remain the same from last year, one thing the company has upgraded is the camera. It's jumping from 13MP to 16 and will come with its own image processing chip, focusing will be faster and it has a larger image sensor too.

samsung-galaxy-s5-white-front-back

The MWC presentation didn't bring us news on the processor or RAM but the company was keen to show off its finger print sensor which, like some rumours suggested, is built in to the screen. The finger print scanner will require you to swipe up on the screen and can be used to protect the phone's apps, settings and files as well as locking and unlocking your phone.

The Galaxy S5 will launch with Android 4.4.2 KitKat on the 11th of April this year, which isn't too far off.

KitGuru Says: More details are due to come as the Mobile World Congress continues in Barcelona. What do you guys think of the Galaxy S5 so far?

Samsung Galaxy S5 is expected to be announced in about three weeks from now, but its pictures and main specs have already been published by various leakers. As expected, the novelty will feature an extraordinary display, a new application processor and new cameras. It is unknown whether the device will have a killer feature, but it will definitely be a very powerful handset.

In case the leaked photo of a smartphone, which is claimed to be the Samsung Galaxy S5 (SGS5), is genuine, then the product will look different than its predecessors. The novelty will sport hardware Google Android buttons, a camera with a large lens as well as two LED flashes on the back. The design of the new Samsung flagship looks rather sleek, but nothing really special by today’s standards. It is unknown whether the Galaxy S5 will be made of metal or plastic.

Based on various leaks (1, 2), the Samsung Galaxy S5 will utilize a 5.25” AMOLED-type display with 2560*1440 resolution (560ppi pixel density), 3GB of LPDDR3 memory, 32GB/64GB/128GB of NAND flash storage, 16MP main camera, 3.2MP front camera, 3200mAh battery and so on. The smartphone will naturally support all the latest wireless standards, including 4G/LTE, LTE-advanced, 3G/3.5G, 802.11a/b/g/n/ac Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 4.0 and so forth.

samsung_galexy_s5

Unfortunately, just like in previous cases Samsung Galaxy S5 is projected to available with completely different application processors. At present it is reported that one SGS5 model is expected to feature Samsung Exynos 6-series chip, presumably with 64-bit ARM Cortex-A57/A53 cores. Another version of the smartphone is claimed to be powered by Qualcomm Snapdragon 805 with four Qualcomm Krait cores, quad-channel memory controller, new Adreno graphics engine, etc. The third version of the Galaxy S5 is expected to be based on the good-old Qualcomm Snapdragon 800. The aforementioned system-on-chips offer dissimilar levels of performance, various power consumption and therefore provide completely different user experience.

At present it is unknown what kind of software innovations Samsung plans to implement into the SGS5, but it is logical to expect improved personalization as well as enhanced default applications that can take advantage of the new display and system-on-chip.

Samsung did not comment on the news-story.

KitGuru Says: Looks like Samsung is further boosting the display size on its Galaxy S flagship smartphone, further blurring the lines between phones, phablets and tablets. While the idea makes sense in case Samsung competes only against Apple iPhone and needs to have an unbeatable trump, it does not seem right when compared to other handsets with large screens. The difference between 4.8”, 5” and 5.25” is not too significant, but the latter screen size just makes the phone a lot bulkier and more power hungry.

Samsung Electronics has started to send out invitations for its “Samsung unPacked 5” event on the 24th of February at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, Spain. Apparently, the company wants to unwrap its new flagship smartphone – Samsung Galaxy S5 – at the trade-show, a rather unexpected move.

The name of the event – Unpacked5 – bluntly and clearly points at the launch of the new Galaxy S5 later this month. What the invitation does not disclose are any details about the new handset, which will likely sell in quantities of around a hundred of millions of units in the next twelve to eighteen months.

It is noteworthy that Samsung decided not to organize a standalone launch event for its new top-of-the-range smartphone, but made decision to announce it during in industrial trade-show. This allows the company to reduce marketing costs, but naturally steals some of the attention since many manufacturers make their announcements during events like MWC.

Samsung Galaxy S5 will be a very important handset for Samsung. The new flagship smartphone has to impress customers in a number of ways, such as design, hardware innovations and software technologies. Unfortunately, nothing particular is known about Samsung Galaxy S5 at the moment. It is believed that it will feature a biometric authentication technology (e.g., iris scanner, fingerprint scanner, etc.), a higher-resolution screen and a number of other improvements.

Earlier this year it was reported that the launch of the Galaxy S5 would be accompanied by the release of Samsung’s new smart-watch device that will succeed the Galaxy Gear which has failed to gain any significant popularity.

Samsung did not comment on the news-story.

KitGuru Says: Without many doubts, Samsung Galaxy S5 promises to be a rather innovative new handset that fixes drawbacks of its predecessor. The main question is whether it will be good enough to catalyze owners of Galaxy S3 and Galaxy S4 to upgrade their handsets.
