Just ahead of the announcement of the Galaxy S7 this month, Samsung has begun rolling out the Android 6.0 Marshmallow OTA update for those using the Galaxy S6 or Galaxy S6 Edge. The update has officially landed in the UK this week and while it is currently limited to two smartphones, it will begin to spread to more smartphones and tablets soon.

The update brings several new features to Samsung's devices, including Now on Tap, which allows Google Now to access information gathered inside more of your Android apps to present you with better results. There is also a feature called Doze, which will allow for better power management on the software side, which should have the knock-on effect of your device lasting longer between charges.

Those using the Galaxy S6 Edge will have a few more ways to customize their device as now folders or specific functions like the Torch can be added to the edge of your screen. You can also choose to have your ten most-used apps display along the screen edge as well.

Samsung's Marshmallow update will likely spread out in waves so it may take a couple of days to land on your specific device, particularly if your network likes to mess around with updates before pushing them out.

KitGuru Says: The Galaxy S6 is getting replaced with the S7 slightly quicker than most expected but hopefully the device will continue to have decent software support following on from the Marshmallow update. Do any of you currently own a Galaxy S6? Has your update arrived yet?

Samsung's a pretty popular brand, so chances are that a few of you reading this own a Galaxy smartphone from the last couple of years. If you happen to be a Galaxy user, you might be wondering when you'll get your hands on the Android Marshmallow update, fortunately, the update schedule has appeared online ahead of time.

Samsung didn't publish the schedule itself, this is actually the result of an internal leak obtained by Times News, so things are subject to change. However, as it stands now, the Galaxy Note 5 and Galaxy S6 Edge+ are set to be the first to get Marshmallow in December.

galaxy-s6-edge-exquisitely-crafted-desktop-e142841361934711

From there, the Galaxy S6 and S6 Edge will get the latest update in January, followed by the Galaxy Note 4 and Galaxy Note Edge in February. Finally, last year's Galaxy S5 and the Galaxy Alpha may also get the Marshmallow update, though right now Samsung has these devices ‘pending approval', which means plans could change depending on any issues.

Given that this schedule was leaked, it can't really be classed as official, so Samsung could still change these dates around, even if they are accurate at this moment in time.

KitGuru Says: Android Marshmallow is currently only available on Google's Nexus line, but it seems that Samsung is making more of an effort to update its most recent devices in a timely manner this year. Do any of you own a Galaxy smartphone? Are you looking forward to the new update?

Samsung is set to announce two new smartphones this week at an Unpacked event in New York. We are already expecting the Galaxy Note 5, which has already had its specs leak. However, we will also be seeing a Galaxy S6 Edge+ this week, which has also had its specifications leak ahead of announcement.

Thanks to a Romanian retailer, we now know what Samsung has packed in to the S6 Edge+, with four different models listed. Given that this information wasn't supposed to be public yet, the retailer has since taken the listings down, though not before PhoneArena could get in there and take screenshots.

The Galaxy S6 Edge+ will feature a 5.67-inch Super AMOLED 2560×1440 display, protected by Gorilla Glass 4. Powering the device internally with be Samsung's own eight core Exynos 7420 chip, clocked in at 1.5Ghz. There will also be 4GB of RAM and a Mali-T760MP8 graphics chip.

On the back there will be a 16 megapixel camera with a 5 megapixel one on the front. Finally, for power, there will be a 3000 mAh battery, which seems a little on the low side but these days when it comes to power versus battery life, phone makers tend to opt for more power.

Samsung just had its latest quarterly earnings report and unfortunately for the company, it wasn't as great as it had hoped as profits fell by around eight per cent. It would seem that despite strong pre-order numbers and initial sales, the Samsung Galaxy S6 and S6 Edge have hit a bit of a low point.

In an effort to rectify the lackluster sales figures, Samsung's latest flagship smartphones will be getting a price cut. The press release says: “While the IT & Mobile Communications (IM) Division is expected to face a difficult business environment, the sales momentum for high-end products will be maintained by adjusting the price of the Galaxy S6 and S6 Edge and introducing new premium smartphone models.”

galaxy-s6-edge-exquisitely-crafted-desktop-e142841361934711

Samsung is all set to launch two new premium smartphones next month on the 13th of August at an event. The company has both the Galaxy Note 5 and the Galaxy S6 Edge Plus to reveal, which will both feature high-end specifications and sell at a premium price.

Samsung's Galaxy line has been slipping for a couple of years now, which many analysts have put down to brand fatigue, although Samsung did make an effort to combat that with the Galaxy S6 re-design, along with cutting down on bloatware in TouchWiz by over 30 percent.

It turns out that Samsung's pre-installed version of SwiftKey for the Galaxy S6 has a security flaw, which is putting user data at risk of being snatched up. According to a US security firm, the issue also affects Samsung's last two flagship smartphones as well, meaning Galaxy S5 and Galaxy S4 users could be affected.

security firm, NowSecure, discovered the issue and has flagged it up with Samsung for patching. The vulnerability comes down to the keyboard's unencrypted connections when downloading different languages. The flaw could potentially allow an attacker to “remotely execute code as a privileged system user”.

swiftkey-keyboard-android

From there, attackers could access the camera and microphone of a device and even install malware. Samsung has not yet officially acknowledged the issue but SwiftKey has commented, speaking with Forbes: “We've seen reports of a security issue related to the Samsung keyboard. We can confirm that the SwiftKey keyboard apps available via Google Play or the Apple App Store are not affected by this vulnerability. We take reports of this manner very seriously and are currently investigating further.”

Samsung was first notified of the issue back in December but as is often the case with these things, since nothing has changed in the last six months, the issue has now been made public in order to pressure Samsung in to fixing up its security holes. NowSecure has a full list of affected devices, HERE.

Samsung has today officially revealed the Iron Man themed Galaxy S6 Edge limited edition smartphone after a couple of weeks worth of teasing. Just a few days ago we received a new teaser image over on the Samsung Tomorrow Facebook page, showing an outline of the back of the device. The original teaser image came from Samsung's Twitter account.

“Samsung and Marvel have come together in celebration of the technological innovation and creative visual storytelling in Marvel’s Avengers: Age of Ultron to introduce this limited edition of the Galaxy S6 edge”, Samsung's announcement said. “The limited edition Iron Man Galaxy S6 edge embodies the power of the iconic Avenger with a dual-curved edge design and advanced features that will provide Marvel fans with the ultimate entertainment experience.”

The device looks fairly nice, with its red and gold color scheme. However, there is a not so subtle image of the Iron Man helmet on the back, which will be a tad too much for some. However, the device will come with a little wireless charging pad shaped like the ark reactor, which is a very cool touch on Samsung's part.

Unfortunately, it looks like the device is only lined up to launch in China, Korea and Hong Kong next month and so far, there is still no price listed.

Update: It looks like Samsung's Iron Man themed Galaxy S6 smartphone is just around the corner. Last week, one of Samsung's official Twitter accounts tweeted out a ‘coming soon' image, only to delete it shortly after. Now, the phone maker is back at it again, this time teasing the device on Facebook. The image shows the back of the Galaxy S6 with ‘coming next week' written along the top.

It looks like the phone is going to have an actual picture of Iron Man's helmet placed on the back, which is way less subtle than I was hoping for. Personally, I was just hoping for Iron Man colors, rather than a full picture of his helmet. However, many may still end up liking the look of the Avengers tie-in device:

Original Story: It looks like Samsung has teamed up with Marvel to launch a limited edition Iron Man themed Galaxy S6 Edge. Renders of the phone originally leaked a short while ago but everything seems to be official now.

Samsung later deleted the tweet from its Samsung Electronics Twitter account for unknown reasons. Further details about availability and a release date are currently unknown. Obviously it's not too hard to guess what the phone will look like, it'll be a red and gold Galaxy S6 Edge.

The Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge comes with a 5.1 inch curved 1440P display, powered by one of Samsung's new Exynos processors. More details on the Iron Man themed phone will probably land next week- availability will probably be quite limited.

Korean News site, Yonhap News, a high-ranking Samsung executive confirmed that sales of the Galaxy S6 have still been slower than the company's last two flagship devices. That said, sales haven't been bad, with ten million units having been sold within one month of being on sale.

Samsung also has high expectations for the Galaxy S6 in the long run, anticipating as many as 70 million device shipments before the end of the fiscal year: “The Galaxy S6 and S6 Edge are drawing positive responses. I have no doubt that they will be the biggest sellers in the Galaxy series ever”.

Samsung has some follow-up variants of the Galaxy S6 and S6 Edge coming up as well, with a limited edition Iron Man model coming soon and a few new color variants including ‘Topaz Blue' and ‘Emerald Green'.

Samsung may have found success with its latest Galaxy S6 flagship but its launch has not been without faults. The latest thing to go wrong is actually the company's ‘Clear View' phone cases, which appear to be creating scratches and scuffs on Galaxy S6 Edge handsets.

The £40 case (yes £40), does not fit Samsung's latest devices properly, which has resulted in scratched up displays. Users on the XDA developer forum have began complaining about the case, with one user saying: “I have a 2 week old S6 Edge which i fitted the Samsung Clear View case from day one. The screen is now full of scratches since and is bloody annoying the hell out of me. I have contacted Samsung UK and awaiting reply.”

s6-edge-cover-540x334

Other users confessed to facing the same problem. So far, Samsung has yet to comment on the issues but it seems that it may need to clamp down on this quick. I doubt many people are going to be happy if they find their Samsung case scratching up their shiny new Samsung phone.

It seems that Samsung is having plenty of issues, ranging from RAM mismanagement, low stocks of the Galaxy S6 Edge and now a batch of bad cases, which are effectively ruining device displays.

KitGuru Says: Considering the price of the case, it is pretty unacceptable that they are damaging brand new Galaxy S6 phones. Hopefully Samsung will be able to help out its affected customers and fix its flawed cases.

Last month, Samsung revealed that it would be releasing an improved version of the Gear VR headset for use with the Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S6 Edge smartphones. The Oculus-made virtual reality headset is now officially available, at the same price point as its predecessor.

The original Gear VR was made for use with the Galaxy Note 4, which was already a fairly niche device. However, Samsung's Galaxy S-series is much more mainstream and as a result, the new Gear VR has a much better chance of high sales.

R321_007_Dynamic2_White_400

The Gear VR for the Galaxy S6 will cost $199, just like the previous version. However, there are some key design improvements, making the device more comfortable to wear. This new version was also built by Oculus in partnership with Samsung. It is likely that part of this deal means that we will be seeing Samsung-made displays on the consumer version of the Oculus Rift, which is due out Q1 2016.

The Samsung Galaxy S6 has a QHD display, so pixel density shouldn't be an issue while using the Gear VR. If you don't happen to have $200 for a mobile VR headset though, then you could always try out Google Cardboard.

You can grab the new Gear VR directly from Samsung in the US, HERE. The original Gear VR for the Note 4 is currently available through Samsung in the UK, although it is sold out. The store has not yet been updated with the new model.

KitGuru Says: Apparently the original Gear VR was quite good, although obviously virtual reality on smartphones is going to be meant for smaller experiences and demos, rather than the full blown games we are expecting to play when VR arrives on PCs. Have any of you used a Gear VR at all? Or even tried out Google Cardboard?

Samsung is on its way to becoming the top choice for those looking to get an Android flagship this year thanks to the highly praised Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S6 Edge. You could argue that the critical success of the device is partially down to the camera but as it turns out, Samsung is using two different imaging sensors on certain Galaxy S6 models.

This means that not all Galaxy S6 handsets use the same camera. Some of them use a Sony IMX240 imaging sensor while some others are using Samsung's home-made ISOCELL sensor. Sam Mobile has already done a side by side comparison of the two differing cameras, showing them to both be of the exact same quality.

galaxy-s6-edge-exquisitely-crafted-desktop-e142841361934711

Which camera sensor you get is not dependent on region or whether you buy the S6 or the S6 Edge, distribution appears to be random. As The Verge points out, it is likely that Samsung used two sensors of equal quality in order to bump up the inadequate supply as there were some issues when it came to manufacturing the Galaxy S6.

Samsung obviously has global quality standards in place for these imaging sensors so if you and your friend both own a Galaxy S6, it is unlikely that their handset will end up taking better pictures than yours or vice versa.

KitGuru Says: This isn't really a problem or even a big deal but it is interesting to learn that occasionally manufacturers will use slightly different components in handsets in order to keep supply up. I do wonder how common this sort of practice is.

Samsung has warned users that a small percentage of both the Galaxy  S6 and S6 Edge flagship devices are currently experiencing performance issues due to the RAM being mismanaged. Both devices make use of 3GB DDR4 RAM, but due to poor memory management in the software, only up to 400MB of it is left available at any one time.

So what this means is that the Galaxy S5 and S6 Edge are both using up to 2.5GB of their available RAM for even light tasks, which is resulting in performance issues. As you can imagine, the problem becomes more evident while using the Chrome browser, which is a bit of a memory hog on all devices.

Over on the XDA Developer Forums, a couple of developers have flagged up the issue. Fortunately, Samsung is usually on top of these things and can sort these issues out very quickly. In-fact, the company has already acknowledged the problem and started rolling out a fix.

In a post on the Samsung UK Facebook page, the company said: “Micro-updates are in the process of being rolled out to correct issues relating to device performance and stability. Keep checking for these on your device via Settings > About device > Software update > Update now.”

KitGuru Says: Samsung is using some cutting edge RAM in its latest phones and it seems a bit more testing should have been done prior to launch. That said, this was not a wide spread problem and is already being dealt with so it shouldn't be too much of an issue. Do any of you guys have a Galaxy S6 or S6 Edge? Have you noticed any performance problems? Try updating your device and let us know if it fixes it.

Samsung is going to release a new version of the Gear VR headset specifically for the Samsung Galaxy S6, with pre-orders going live tomorrow. The original Gear VR headset was created by Oculus and was built for the Samsung Galaxy Note 4.

The Gear VR Innovator Edition for the Galaxy S6 and the S6 Edge will be available through Best Buy and directly through Samsung in the US, with units becoming available on the 8th of May. The new headset has also been designed in collaboration with Oculus and will have some key improvements.

Samsung-Gear-VR-vs-Microsoft-HoloLens-2

Improvements have been made to make the head-gear more comfortable to wear. Additionally, the device will now work with a mainstream device, which will perhaps make it a bit more popular as not many people own a Galaxy Note in comparison to a Galaxy S device.

Samsung has not officially confirmed the price of its updated virtual reality headset but the original did go for $199 at launch.

KitGuru Says: Sales figures for the original Gear VR headset were not released we don't know exactly how successful it was but it seems that Samsung is interested in pursuing its idea for VR on smartphones. Do you guys think VR fits with smartphones? I tried a Google Cardboard headset for the first time recently and it was quite interesting, although the resolution of the screen used detracted from the experience a little bit.

It turns out that Samsung might have hired 500 people to act as fans at the Galaxy S6 launch in China. According to reports, the Korean device maker paid around 500 people to attend its event, most of which were actually iPhone users.

Samsung didn't go out and find all of these people by itself though. According to Chinese site, The Paper (Via: WantChinaTimes), a person who specializes in recruiting people for these sort of jobs bought over 100 people to the event and paid them ¥20 each, which works out as little over £2.

galaxy-s6-edge-exquisitely-crafted-desktop-e1428413619347

The other recruiters involved with the event managed to round-up a further 400 people to attend. Only one thousand people were invited to the event, so these fake fans accounted for half of the total attendance. One woman was reportedly hired by Samsung directly and was paid ¥50 or just over a fiver here in the UK, she was only required to stay at the event for 15 minutes or so.

According to The Paper's sources, Samsung instructed everyone involved to tell reporters at the event that they were interested in checking out Samsung's brand new flagship devices. They were also given instructions for promoting the event via social media, although Samsung did not tell anyone to leave their iPhones at home, so most pictures taken there were on an Apple device.

Samsung has yet to comment on the report coming straight from China. However, it does show that the company is desperate to regain traction in China, following the launch of the iPhone in the country last year.

Samsung is gearing up to reveal its first quarter 2015 earnings soon so the company has released an earnings guide for investors, which tells a similar story to the last few, Samsung is expecting to see a sizable dip in profit due to dwindling sales of its devices.

Samsung currently predicts that it made around $5.4 billion in operating profit between January and March, just before the announcement of the Samsung Galaxy S6. This represents a 12 per cent sales decline and amounts to a 30 per cent drop in profit from the same time period last year.

galaxy-s6-edge-exquisitely-crafted-desktop

Samsung hasn't said much else at this time but we already knew that its sales were trending downwards for Galaxy branded devices. Obviously, all of these figures were taken before the announcements of the Samsung Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S6 Edge, which are performing very well when it comes to pre-orders.

Many critics are already very impressed with the Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge and are expecting it to do very well in sales. Samsung is also expecting this to push demand for curved displays and is rumored to be planning the Samsung Galaxy S7 with a similar display to the S6 Edge.

KitGuru Says: The Samsung Galaxy S4 and Galaxy S5 were pretty disappointing devices, not really doing much to differentiate themselves from the Galaxy S3, which did very well for Samsung. However, The Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge is looking like a very impressive device and could get many people interested in the Galaxy brand once again. Are any of you guys using a Samsung smartphone? Are you thinking of upgrading to the S6 or S6 Edge?

The Samsung Galaxy S6 and the Galaxy S6 Edge were both revealed earlier this month, featuring a new design and plenty of glass taking over from the plastic found on older models. As you would expect, the back of the phone isn’t as accessible to users as it once was, so there is no microSD card slot on the new flagships.

However, Samsung’s upcoming Galaxy S6 Active may bring the feature back, for those who require additional storage. A user on Reddit has claimed to have spoken with a Samsung rep about the currently unannounced Galaxy S6 Active. The user apparently came away with a few details about the device.

GS4-Active_008
There are currently no images of the Galaxy S6 Active. This is an older model.

According to the Reddit post, a microSD card slot is set to be included on the new device, which also suggests that it might have an easily removable back panel, unlike the Galaxy S6 or S6 Edge. The Galaxy S6 Active will drop the fingerprint sensor, heart rate monitor and will also opt for a lower resolution camera.

Reddit isn’t the most reliable source of new information so this should all be taken with a pinch of salt but it all does seem to keep in-line with Samsung’s past strategy when it comes to differentiating its ‘Active’ devices from its flagship.

Samsung's latest duo of flagships launch soon, the Galaxy S6 and the S6 Edge. Both devices will be sporting a new version of Touch Wiz, which has significantly cut back on the amount of bloatware. However, Samsung might finally allow users to delete any of its stock apps should they want to.

Obviously there will be some Samsung-made apps pre-installed on the Galaxy S6 and S6 Edge but they may actually be uninstallable this time around, something that has required rooting a device to achieve in the past. If this turns out to be true, then it will be very easy to remove all bloatware apps from the new phone.

Samsung-Galaxy-Note-Edge2-e1425655260974

Many smartphone manufacturers use pre-installed apps as a way to promote their own services, or take licensing money to promote third-party apps instead.

Being able to remove certain unwanted stock apps right off the bat would be a welcome change from Samsung and would lead to a much cleaner Touch Wiz/Android experience. This move comes after a new South Korean law ruled that all apps should be removable by users. It is not yet known if Samsung will only let South Korean customers remove its pre-installed apps.

Discuss on our Facebook page, HERE.

KitGuru Says: It isn't clear right now if Samsung will make pre-installed apps removable outside of South Korea but it would be a nice move on their part, it might also make Touch Wiz a more attractive option as right now, not a lot of people like the skin all that much.

The Samsung Galaxy S6 is apparently breaking records already as 15 million people have pre-ordered the latest flagship device, according to new reports. An additional five million have gone for the Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge, featuring a display with curves on both sides.

This news came from an executive from Samsung speaking with the Korea Times. Shin Jong-Kyun, Samsung's Chief of Mobile, said “To be honest, pre-orders for our two Galaxy variants from our major clients are really huge.”

w3-e1425923479449

This isn't necessarily talking about customer pre-orders though, it was not made clear so the figures could pertain to retail orders.

The Samsung Galaxy S6 was revealed last week at an unpacked event. It is set to be pretty expensive with the standard 32Gb S6 costing £550 off contract, the Galaxy S6 Edge on the other hand will cost £700 SIM free. Both handsets have the same specifications for the most part, aside from the Edge having the curved screen.

Other specifications for both devices include Android 5.0, 3GB of RAM, a quad-core Exynos CPU and a 16 megapixel rear facing camera.

Samsung's latest flagship smartphone, the Galaxy S6, has a revamped design, ditching the plastic used on past models in favor of metal and glass. There are some upsides to this, including the premium look and feel. However, there are some downsides, such as the lack of ability to swap out spare batteries with ease.

The new 140 page long Samsung Galaxy manual is available to download now, containing information on how to open up the Galaxy S6 and get to the battery inside. However, it is a pretty complicated procedure that involves removing the phone's circuit board and disconnecting the lead joining the phone and the battery together.

w3

The battery might be user removable but it is nowhere near as simple as it has been in the past so swapping out spare batteries seems a little out of the question for the Galaxy S6. The six step removal process is mainly intended for authorized repair agents, rather than users, meaning that the days of swapping out batteries for some extra juice appear to be gone for those who want to stick with the Galaxy brand.

This will likely disappoint some of the mobile power users as Samsung has sacrificed functionality for build quality.

A UK retailer has revealed the price for Samsung's latest set of flagship devices, the Galaxy S6 and the slightly more ambitious Galaxy S6 Edge. The devices were revealed last week but until now, there had been no pricing confirmation ahead of its April release date.

Neither of Samsung's latest offerings is available to pre-order just yet but unlocked-mobiles appears to have the SIM-free price already listed. According to this retail outlet, the Galaxy S6 will set you back just shy of £550, while the Galaxy S6 Edge will cost more, coming in at just under £650.

Samsung-Galaxy-Note-Edge2-e1418987096172

These listings weren't model specific but it is likely to be for the 32GB models as Samsung has taken a step back from 16GB devices this time around. Samsung has yet to confirm pricing itself but it is likely that many retailers are already in the loop and just waiting to accept pre-orders following Samsung's approval.

The Samsung Galaxy S6 is set to release next month, featuring a 2560×1440 QHD display, a quad-core Exynos CPU and 3GB of RAM running Android Lollipop with a new, stripped down version of Touch Wiz.

Earlier this week we got out first look at the S6 flagship right next to the Galaxy S6 Edge but these images weren't taken from particularly great angles. However, some better images have now come through, fully showing off the design of the S6 Edge.

This new batch of images comes from CNET Korea, showing off the device in its entirety. However, specifications are still unknown. It is likely that it will be running a similar configuration to the normal S6, which will use an Exynos processor, 3Gb of RAM and a 20 megapixel camera on the back.

These images verify earlier rumors suggesting that Samsung would be launching a curved smartphone or even a smartphone with a three-sided display. As you can see from the above image, there are angled sections of screen on either side of the Galaxy S6 Edge.

Aside from the screen though, the S6 Edge resembles the normal S6 fairly closely. Samsung's new devices are set to be officially unveiled at an Unpacked event on the 1st of March.

The Samsung Galaxy S6 reveal is just a handful of days away but we already have our first look at the new flagship thanks to some new leaks. The Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S6 Edge have been pictured side by side, showing off the new design and a few features.

As you probably guessed, the Galaxy S6 Edge does come with a curved screen, while the Galaxy S6 looks fairly similar to past models despite a few changes. The pictures were shared on the XDA-Developers forum, giving credit to previous rumors that suggested Samsung would launch two devices at the same time.

Galaxy S6 Leak

The Galaxy S6 Edge may have curves on both sides of the screen but from the image angle, we can only see one. The curves appear a bit more subtle than the one found on the Note Edge, which was big enough to double as a second screen of sorts for app shortcuts.

It looks like Samsung is finally opting for metal on its flagship devices, ditching the plastic that drew complaints over the last few years. Samsung is due to officially reveal the Galaxy S6 on the 1st of March just ahead of the Mobile World Congress.

Samsung Electronics this week introduced the world’s first NAND flash storage chips that comply with the eMMC 5.1 specification. The new solutions will significantly improve performance of embedded storage inside mobile devices, such as smartphones and tablets.

The eMMC 5.1 storage devices from Samsung are offered in 16GB, 32GB and 64GB densities. The 64GB eMMC 5.1 memory features a maximum speed of 250MB/s for sequential data reading and 125MB/s for sequential writes. The chips provide 11000 read IOPS (input/output operations per second) and 13000 write IOPS, which is 10 times faster compared to typical SD memory cards.

The eMMC 5.1 standard supports command queue function, which enables seamless multitasking activities. In addition, the specification includes a “Secure Write Protection” security protocol feature that ensures only designated users will be able to access secured areas of the eMMC.

Samsung claims that it is the first supplier of NAND flash memory to offer its customers eMMC 5.1 memory solutions.

“We are already in the process of preparing to ship our first eMMC 5.1 products to some smartphone and tablet OEMs,” said Jim Elliot, vice president of memory marketing at Samsung Electronics.

Samsung has had a special team focusing on developing wireless charging technology for around 15 years now and apparently this year is going to be huge for advancements in the field, according to the company. Over the last few years, Samsung has been showing its commitment to wireless charging tech by baking it in to several of its flagship devices, namely the Galaxy Note 4 and the Galaxy S5.

We've heard rumors that Samsung will debut improved wireless charging technology with the Galaxy S6 this year and it looks like that may still be the plan with the introduction of a new industry standard, something that wireless charging has been missing thus far.

There are currently three organisations working on standardizing wireless charging, including the Wireless Power Consortium, the Power Matters Alliance and the Alliance for Wireless Power. While the WPC sees a future in Qi technology, the other two alliances have teamed up to push their own standard.

Samsung is actually a member of all three organisations and has announced that a component that supports multiple standards on a single chip has been created. The component was actually created last year but according to Samsung it takes between six months to a year to integrate new components with devices on the market.

Samsung isn't even hiding it anymore, the next Galaxy flagship from the device maker will launch during a Samsung Unpacked event on the 1st of March, just before the Mobile World Congress is due to take place.

The Samsung Mobile Twitter account begun teasing the next flagship with a #TheNextGalaxy hashtag, The first tweet from the account said “I am #TheNextGalaxy. Be inspired by my vision at #Unpacked.”

The account cover photo is also a silhouette of a curved smartphone, confirming rumours of the device's design change.

A video teaser was also posted by the Samsung Twitter account, although this only really shows off the phone's rear camera, which Samsung begun teasing earlier this week on its own blog.

So as far as we can tell, the Samsung Galaxy S6 will be revealed on the 1st of March at the Samsung Unpacked event. The new camera is set to be a big selling point and the device will either be curved or there will be a curved variant. We already know that the device will be using Samsung's own Exynos chip and will likely feature 3GB of RAM.

We don't know an exact shipping date yet but word on the street is that it will be around the 22nd of March.

KitGuru Says: The Samsung Galaxy S6 is just a few weeks away. Do you guys think Samsung will have done enough to make this year's version stand out from the crowd?

In an attempt to lower its dependence on Qualcomm, the world’s largest developer of application processors for mobile devices, Samsung plans to integrate baseband capabilities into its advanced Exynos system-on-chips. Such SoCs will emerge next year and will power devices the company will release in 2016.

For years flagship smartphones from Samsung used either its own, or Qualcomm’s top-of-the-range application processors. This year the upcoming Galaxy S6 will rely on Samsung’s own Exynos chip, which will lower Samsung’s reliance on Qualcomm’s solutions. The next-gen Galaxy Note 5 will also feature Samsung’s own AP. Still, like in the past, the top smartphones will still use one of Qualcomm’s or Intel’s leading baseband chips for 3G/4G/LTE connectivity. In the future, the company plans to finally integrate modem and voice hardware into its own high-end application processors.

Business Korea reports that the first Samsung’s mobile AP to integrate baseband technologies will be the company’s next-generation top-of-the-range Exynos chip that will power the next flagship smartphone – presumably the Samsung Galaxy S7 and the Galaxy Note 6 – which is due in the first half of 2016. Eventually the company will also offer mainstream-class SoCs with built-in modem and voice capabilities.

Integration of baseband technologies into APs will help Samsung to decrease its purchases from Qualcomm and further differentiate its smartphones and tablets from those sold by rivals. Moreover, since integration of baseband capabilities lowers cost of the overall mobile platforms, the ability to build-in modems into SoCs will help Samsung to add baseband capabilities to various new types of devices, including wearables.

Samsung is not exactly new to wireless modem business. The company has its own baseband chips, but continues to use solutions from Qualcomm for the vast majority of its smartphones.

Samsung did not comment on the news-story.

KitGuru Says: Samsung is clearly an important client for Qualcomm, but as the competition on the market of smartphones and tablets heats up, the South Korea-based company needs to improve its abilities to differentiate. Moreover, since Qualcomm’s chip power smartphones from rivals, by purchasing such SoCs, Samsung funds research and development of Qualcomm, essentially helping its competitors to gain performance and features. Clearly, that is not something Samsung wants to do.

Samsung's Galaxy S6 is expected to be announced in just a few weeks time and now the Korean device maker is beginning to tease its latest flagship device, promising to deliver nothing less than “the future of cameras”, in a new blog post.

In a post from Samsung's camera Research and Development chief, DongHoon Jang, the company is promising quite the upgrade for its next flagship camera. In the post he said the new camera “will be intelligent and do all the thinking for users, allowing them to take amazing pictures under any conditions, without having to worry about anything more than just pressing the shutter button”.

Cameras have been a strong point for Samsung over the years, the company also sees front facing cameras as more important than ever before thanks to the rise of selfies. Samsung is also promising simplicity when it comes to its camera app.

However, the post also puts emphasis on camera megapixel count, which is a little disappointing. The iPhone has proven many times that you don't necessarily need more than 8MP to take decent images, while Samsung has continuously upped its megapixel count over the last few generations.

The latest Samsung flagship is expected to be revealed at the Mobile World Congress on the 1st of March.

Samsung has progressively increased the screen size of its Galaxy S flagship devices for the last few years but it looks like that may finally stop as it has been tipped that the Galaxy S6 will feature a shrunken down 5 inch screen.

New leaks suggest that the Samsung Galaxy S6 has the model number SM-G920A and comes with a 5-inch screen, according to Indian import tracking site, Zauba. This will be the first time in recent years that Samsung has released a flagship device that is smaller than its predecessor.

Other leaks also suggest that the device will have a 1440p screen, which is a fairly obvious guess given that other recent flagships have also begun incorporating higher resolution 1440p displays, despite the lack of need for them.

an eight core Exynos 7420 chipset, 3GB of RAM and a 20MP camera are also on the cards.

Samsung going with its own Exynos chip seems very likely at this point. We have previously reported that Samsung was unhappy with Qualcomm's Snapdragon 810 chip. Additionally, Qualcomm recently admitted to losing a big client during an earnings call.

The rumor mill has been churning out quite a bit of information on Samsung's plans for the Galaxy S6 recently. However, Qualcomm may have indirectly confirmed that the Galaxy S6 will not use a Snapdragon processor, as it has admitted that it has lost a big client.

As part of its first earnings report of 2015, Qualcomm said that there were “expectations that our Snapdragon 810 processor will not be in the upcoming design cycle of a large customer's flagship device”. This quote ties in well with recent rumors that Samsung was not happy with the Snapdragon 810's heat management capabilities and would instead opt to use its own made Exynos CPU for the Galaxy S6.

Qualcomm gave the above statement to explain why there was a dip in estimated future profit, which is understandable, Samsung are a big client to lose, so much so that Apple keeps going back to them for its own iPhone processors.

We have seen early benchmarks of the supposed Galaxy S6 processor, showing some decent performance numbers when stacked up against early results from Qualcomm's Snapdragon 810 flagship.

Samsung has used Exynos chips in its devices for some time now, in-fact some variants of the Galaxy S5 use one.  It will be interesting to see how the final version of the Galaxy S6 stacks up against the competition, which are still largely expected to use Snapdragon 810 processors.

KitGuru Says: The Samsung Galaxy S6 will launch in a couple of months with all signs suggesting that it will also use a Samsung made Exynos CPU. What do you guys make of this? Can Samsung make a chip capable of competing with Qualcomm's highest end Snapdragon?
