While Samsung’s Galaxy Unpacked 2018 was headlined by the highly anticipated Galaxy Note 9 phablet alongside the Bixby-powered Galaxy Home smart speaker, the event itself marks a big expansion in the firm’s ecosystem. Prioritising “seamless connectivity between all devices,” Samsung has announced its return to the smartwatch market with the brand new Galaxy Watch.

Samsung accidentally confirmed the Galaxy Watch at the end of last month, after a leak saw the 42mm Rose Gold variant briefly appear on the company’s website. This will be priced at $330, offering users the choice between a Midnight Black version and Rose Gold, while a $350 46mm option will launch in Silver. While the listing originally clarified the Galaxy Watch’s Bluetooth functionality, LTE versions will be available a little later in the year.

Despite appearing as a standard everyday watch, Samsung’s new smartwatch utilises low-power architecture to optimise the processor. This allows the battery to last multiple days on just a single charge. The Galaxy Watch will also be launching with a new accessory, allowing Samsung users to charge both their smartphone and smartwatch at the same time.

“Work, life and health” are the main focuses of Samsung’s new effort, implementing a heart rate monitor underneath the Gorilla Glass DX+ encased watch face. This will pair up with Samsung’s proprietary health applications in order to track sleep, workouts, food and water. The data comes with suggestions of how the user could better their health, such as breathing exercises when heart rate is elevated.

Of course, as a smartwatch it still comes with productivity functions. Samsung’s daily briefing feature syncs to the user’s calendar, displaying what is next on the agenda right on the home screen. This is customisable to the user’s tastes, with the South Korean firm offering over 60,000 watch faces and a selection of bands.

Fans can pre-purchase the Galaxy Watch directly from Samsung’s website starting tomorrow, with the smartwatch hitting shelves on August 24th.

KitGuru Says: Previous entries have either focused on productivity or health, so it’s good to see Samsung return to form by blending the two. Although it’s slightly on the expensive end of things, I can’t say I’m not tempted. Do you like the look of the Galaxy Watch?

After months of leaks upon leaks, Samsung will finally be hosting its Galaxy Unpacked 2018 event tomorrow. We already have a good idea of what to expect, but here is when and where the announcements will be taking place.

On the 9th of August at 4PM BST, Samsung will be holding its Galaxy Unpacked 2018 event in New York City. Obviously, NYC is a long way to travel for most, so the event will also be streamed live on Samsung's website, similarly to how Apple handles its own event livestreams.

As for what we are expecting to see, there have been numerous leaks pointing towards the Galaxy Note 9- which makes perfect sense as the Note tends to launch each year around this time. Leaked specs and advertising promos have already made their way online, suggesting 1TB storage options and a whopping 8GB of RAM.

There have been some whispers about a potential smart speaker in a similar vein to the Apple HomePod, Amazon Echo or Google Home. There has even been talk of Samsung re-entering the smart watch arena with a new Galaxy Watch. Either way, we'll find out for sure during the event tomorrow evening.

KitGuru Says: Aside from the obvious Galaxy Note 9 announcement, Samsung could have a lot more to show off tomorrow. We'll be keeping an eye on the event for all of the announcements.

Rumours of Samsung’s re-entry into the smartwatch market has been running rampant over the past month, suggesting that the company was set to drop its Gear branding in favour of the popular Galaxy moniker. Now, the company has confirmed that the Galaxy Watch is real with a leaked listing on its own website.

The leaked Galaxy Watch seems to take after the Apple Watch, debuting in a 42mm rose gold model. Carrying the model number R810NZDAXAR, the particular product shown clarifies its Bluetooth functionality, suggesting that there is credit to the rumoured LTE version of the smartwatch. The listing has since been deleted, but not before being forever preserved by CNET’s Scott Stein.

Not much else is shown through the product page, however the Galaxy Watch’s “R800” portion of its ID matches earlier reports on the product line’s name. Although this might lend credit to other rumours, it’s worth taking the remainder with an extra dash of salt just in case. The device is believed to come in two sizes, from a bulkier 1.9-inch version to a smaller 1.3-inch variant, both of which are likely to use Samsung’s proprietary Exynos 7 Dual 7270 processor, powered by a 470mAh battery.

Early reports on the Samsung Galaxy Watch suggested that the wearable was set to ditch the company’s own Tizen OS in favour of Google’s Wear OS, however this has supposedly been debunked by the folks over at ZDNet. Instead, Tizen OS will help the Galaxy Watch with its new and improved health and fitness functionality, corroborating rumours that the new device will include a heart rate sensor.

Samsung is expected to debut the Galaxy Watch at the unveiling of the Galaxy Note 9 on August 9th.

KitGuru Says: Given that the Galaxy Note 9 is expected to be just another iterative upgrade, it looks like the Galaxy Watch could steal the show. Hopefully the year Samsung took out will prove useful in the smartwatch’s design, and fingers crossed it comes in more variants than rose gold, as I’m personally not a fan. Will you be picking up a Galaxy Watch?

Samsung helped to pioneer the modern-day smartwatch as we know it, releasing products under its ‘Gear’ brand since 2014. Although Samsung’s efforts in the market have diminished in recent years, this could all be about to change, as the company is said to bring its renowned Galaxy branding into the mix with a new smartwatch this year.

This speculation comes from a trademark filing in Korea, spotted by SamMobile, that indicates Samsung is set to launch a “Galaxy Watch.” Switching to the widely-known Galaxy branding is something that serial leaker Ice Universe has previously claimed the company will do with its Gear S3 successor, previously referred to by the media as the Samsung Gear S4.

Samsung’s last release was its Gear S3 smartwatch late in 2016, before being edged out of the market by Apple’s second generation of smartwatches. Most Android Wear watchmakers have since left the market entirely, leaving the Apple Watch Series 3 was largely uncontested when it launched last year. Samsung’s new efforts could start to see a resurgence for Android users, but it is questioned what a new device would offer wearers.

One of the major rumoured changes to the proposed device is that Samsung will eschew its very own Tizen-based smartwatch OS in favour of Google’s Android Wear OS, boosting it with its own voice-assistant, Bixby. This is surprising for many, given that Tizen is often praised for its accessible interface, however if the rumours hold weight then Samsung could have something in store to surprise users.

Now that Ice Universe’s early claims have been corroborated to some degree, it’s quite possible that the company’s next wearable will sport a 470mAh battery, new UX interactions and the ability to take blood pressure measurements. The device is also said to utilise a “PLP package,” which is a new type of chip manufacturing process that enables boards to be smaller and cheaper.

Hopefully these lower production costs mean the device launches at an affordable price for the premium brand, but all information should be taken with a pinch of salt until the company officially announces its next smartwatch. Historically, its Gear devices were always launched at the end of August, meaning we could hear more about the Gear S4/Galaxy Watch during Samsung’s Galaxy Note 9 launch on August 9th.

KitGuru Says: Whatever the device is named, it is clear that Android wearers need something new on the market. Hopefully Samsung delivers and does its Galaxy name proud rather than yet another iterative upgrade to existing products. What would you like to see from a Galaxy-branded smartwatch?
