The annual Game Developers Conference is kicking off on Monday but Nvidia has a few new RTX related announcements going live ahead of the event. This month, even more games are getting RTX features. Diablo 4 will soon get ray-traced graphics, Star Wars Outlaws has been confirmed for ray-tracing and DLSS 3 at launch, while other previously released titles are getting upgrades to their Nvidia-specific features as well.

Black Myth: Wukong and Naraka: Bladepoint are both upgrading with full ray tracing and DLSS 3.5, which includes ray-reconstruction technology for better ray-traced visuals with upscaling turned on. Diablo 4, a game that already supports DLSS 3, will be getting a graphics upgrade on March 26th with ray-traced effects, although Blizzard has yet to confirm if it is only implementing shadows/reflections, or if it is going bigger with GI effects.

Star Wars Outlaws, touted as the very first true open-world Star Wars game, is set to be one of the biggest releases of the year. The game will launch with DLSS 3 for super-charged performance on RTX 40 series graphics cards, and it will include ray-traced graphics.

Portal with RTX, the fully path-traced remake of Valve's classic puzzle shooter, is now available for free, with an upgrade to DLSS 3.5 with Ray Reconstruction. Unfortunately, there is no update on the Half-Life 2 RTX project but hopefully we'll hear about that again later in the year.

Portal with RTX now also benefits from RTX IO, enabling faster GPU-based loading and asset decompression, so textures should load faster and some of the load will be taken off of your storage drive.

Some other tidbits being announced today include:

  • Sengoku Dynasty – in early access now with DLSS 3. At 4K, max settings, DLSS 3 multiplies frame rates by an average of 2X, enabling the GeForce RTX 4070 to comfortably exceed 60FPS. And on faster GPUs performance surpasses 100FPS, topping out at 160FPS on the GeForce RTX 4090.
  • Outcast – A New Beginning – launches March 15th With DLSS 2 & DLAA.
  • The First Berserker: Khazan – launches soon with NVIDIA DLSS 3 and Reflex.
  • NVIDIA RTX Remix Open Beta – DLSS 3.5 with Ray Reconstruction is coming soon, enabling all modders to upgrade their work.
  • The Finals – Season 2 launches today March 14 and includes DLSS 3, RTXGI, and Reflex.

KitGuru Says: What do you think of Nvidia's gaming-related GDC announcements this year? The RTX Remix going into open beta is a pretty big addition here, as it will enable more RTX mods for classic games that don't support ray-tracing.

Due to the spread of the COVID-19 virus, the Game Developer Conference (GDC) had to be cancelled this month. Some platform holders and studios switched to livestreams to discuss new technologies, while others have been waiting on a rescheduled date. Today, the group behind GDC announced GDC Summer, with hopes to make the event happen in August.

GDC will now be taking place from August 4th until August 6th, maintaining the same three-day structure with talks, panels and sessions from folks across the industry. The show floor will also serve as an opportunity for developers to show off their work.

August gives a few months buffer while scientists continue to combat the coronavirus, although the folks behind GDC will “continue to monitor the latest information”, so depending on how things go, further changes could be made.

We'll have to wait and see what the new GDC schedule looks like in a few weeks time, as developers will need time to prepare once again.

KitGuru Says: I'm not sure early August is a long enough postponement but we'll have to wait and see. Microsoft and Sony have already held their planned GDC talks this month, so the new schedule will also be interesting to see.

Last week we reported that PlayStation and Facebook were no longer involved in GDC 2020 due to concerns over Coronavirus. Though GDC itself is still set to run as usual, another studio has now announced its withdrawal from the conference. Kojima Productions has followed in the footsteps of Facebook and PlayStation, to announce that it too would be cancelling, “due to increasing concerns related to coronavirus.”

Making the announcement on Twitter, the studio stated earlier today thatKojima Productions has made the difficult decision to cancel our participation at the 2020 Game Developers Conference due to increasing concerns related to coronavirus”. This would have been Kojima Productions’ first GDC since the release of the studio’s debut title, Death Stranding. The studio’s absence therefore is disappointing to say the least – though entirely understandable.

This not only affects the studio’s plans, but Hideo Kojima’s, asthis cancellation also includes Hideo Kojima’s session on the 19th and Eric Johnson’s session on the 16th”. GDC stands for Game Developers’ conference and is “the largest annual gathering of the video game and interactive art industry”. Inaugurated over 30 years ago, GDC includes an expo; networking events; an awards show; and a variety of tutorials, roundtables and lectures by studios and notable industry figures.

The absence of Facebook and Oculus, PlayStation, and now Kojima Productions will be felt as GDC sets to take place between the 16th and 20th of March. It’ll be interesting to see whether any other studios drop out in the time between now and GDC.

KitGuru says: Were you looking forward to seeing Kojima Productions at GDC? Do you think the conference might get cancelled if enough developers drop out? Which conference are you most looking forward to watching? Let us know down below.

The Games Developers Conference is set to kick off next week and Valve will once again have a presence there. This year, Valve will be holding a virtual reality demonstration that will bring us all back to the world of Portal and the labs of Aperture Science.

Valve is going to be showing off ‘The Lab', a compilation of new VR experiments set in the Portal world. As you would expect, these experiments are purpose built to showcase the HTC Vive and its Roomscale VR technology.

Valve has been experimenting with Portal in a virtual reality setting for a while now. Last year, videos started popping up showing off a Portal VR demo built inside of the Source 2 engine but this later went on to become the Steam VR Performance benchmarking tool, which is now available on Steam.

As to any serious games, Valve could be working on now, rather than small experiences or demos, we did recently get a look at some hidden files that hint at further progress on both Left 4 Dead 3 and Half-Life 3.

KitGuru Says: It doesn't look like Valve will be launching its own full-scale game alongside the HTC Vive but it does seem to have a few demos prepared. It will be interesting to see what Valve has been experimenting with next week.

When Lisa Graff, Intel VP for the Desktop Client Platforms Group, recently told KitGuru about her plans for 2014/2015, the focus was clearly on reinventing the desktop. As KitGuru reported a while back, there will be a resurgence on desktop for Intel going forward, which we believe will peak around 2017. To get a different take on this information, we caught up with Intel’s Gaming Guru, Richard Huddy who was just eyeing up the hotel’s perfectly rendered breakfast fruit when we spoke.

“It’s all about delivering credibility with the game developers”, Richard told us. “With CPU and GPU performance increasing dramatically over recent years, there has also been pressure to reduce power consumption, to create a much better mobile experience”. This drive toward better graphics on the go seems to have spurred a lot of innovation at Intel.
